Fred Lawson, preparations for the Festival of Britain 1951: “The other day I went into the castle, to have a look around and see if I could find a good place to hang the Scrope portraits for the festival. After about ten minutes I found myself sitting on the top of the tower, looking across at the distance or looking down into the village. It’s surprising how small and aimless people look if you are a good height up, little dots of figures crossing the road, others crossing from the other side, some not moving at all, others going straight on, someone coming out and shaking a rug, another pushing a little cart. I had been rather worried about things when I first sat down, and began to think have all the little dots below got worries? I knew they had as I had only just left them.” #letterfromthedales#wensleydale#castlebolton#yorkshirewriters#yorkshireartist#fredlawson#yorkshiredales

In 1951 the village of Castle Bolton, Wensleydale hosted a festival of Britain celebration which included historic plays, pageants and commissioned art. Fred Lawson was party to this and also continued to capture Castle Bolton in his regular homage to the beauty of Wensleydale: his many watercolours and ink drawings. #festivalofbritain1951#fredlawson#castlebolton#boltoncastle#watercolours#yorkshiredales#letterfromthedales#wensleydale

At one time if I painted a road, I always had a horse and cart on it or some figures. I don’t often do it now, it rather fixes things, it’s nice according to your mood to imagine what you like on it. A friend who had just got better after an illness once told me that opposite her bed there was a picture of a bridge, and on it was the usual man looking over, she got so sick of seeing him day after day in the same place, that she had to have the picture taken down. #fredlawson 1951 #letterfromthedales#yorkshirewriters#yorkshireartist#penandinkdrawing#yorkshiredales#castlebolton#leyburn

I like winter up here, it tones you up, it’s real. In summer with so many visitors, bus loads of school children, different societies, hikers etc., you begin to feel that you are living in an open air museum or health centre. #fredlawson 1950 #letterfromthedales#yorkshirewriters#castlebolton#yorkshireartist#drawing#penandinkdrawing#yorkshiredales#wensleydale#winter#leyburn#yorkshirewriter

Looking on the village one moonlight night, there was still a light in one cottage window, and all was at peace, I thought this place never alters....what a changing life goes on in the cottages, and yet the general pattern doesn’t alter. #fredlawson 1950 This drawing shows the cottage of Fred Lawson and Muriel Metcalfe. I’ve read Salvador Dali’ said”Cooking is very near to painting,”and suggesting that bad cooking can be responsible for bad painting. What a grand thought. The other day, I had a walk above the village to my favourite little wood... I often sit and make a drawing in it, and often just sit. Fred Lawson’s watercolour of his wife and fellow artist Muriel Metcalfe captures her spirit and love of painting. Fred first visited Wensleydale in 1910, the year Muriel was born. Despite Muriel being 22 years younger than Fred, they were kindred spirits. #fredlawson#yorkshireartist#watercolour#yorkshiredales#letterfromthedales#castlebolton#leyburn#wensleydale

What an attraction old weather beaten things have for artists....If I had a farm and it began to attract artists, I should feel very uneasy, knowing that it was slipping back...(I hope no farmer reads this and spoils a few good subjects). Fred Lawson wrote a monthly ‘Letter From The Dales’ which was published first in the Ripon Wakeman and in later years in The Dalesman and which he always illustrated with a fine pen and ink drawing. The February 1950 entry begins:’Have you had any colds lately? I’ve been having them before Christmas, as soon as one starts to pack up another one settles in. This winter instead of asking “How’s your cold?” I’ve been asking “How are your colds?” In most cases it’s nearer the truth.’ #fredlawson#letterfromthedales#castlebolton#yorkshireartist#wensleydale#colds#yorkshirewisdom#yorkshirewit

Fred Lawson loved painting trees, as if they were old friends. This one was in Castle Bolton opposite the Castle. 1918, painted in oil, probably due to the sub zero temperature freezing his watercolour. #fredlawson#letterfromthedales#yorkshiredales#wensleydale#castlebolton#yorkshireartist#leyburn#trees
