Basketry is an old tradition among African artisans. The materials used vary greatly depending on the resources available. Basketry is a form of employment for many African women and elevates their status within their social environments. All our products within the basketwork category are made with elephant grass. . . . . . #xultures#basket#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#africa#tribal#crafts#painting#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#africanart#instahappy#art#nature#homedecor#kunst#arte#artisan#women#elephantgrass#weaving

This is a Yorouba Guelede mask. The Yorouba believed in dualities constantly seeking balance in unity. Just as there is a male-female energy polarity, there is also a polarity within female energy itself that is create-destroy. The Guelede dance pays tribute to the special power of women, known as our mothers. Those women who use these powers in a destructive way are called Aje (witches). Through the Guelede masks dance, good witches control the power of the Aje who fly at night causing illness and death. Some people believe the birds represent the messenger of the mothers. This mask is a ‘witch-catching’ mask carved from a single piece of wood. . . . . . #xultures#bird#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#africa#tribal#crafts#painting#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#africanart#Guelede#instahappy#art#nature#homedecor#kunst#arte#artisan#yorouba#mask#witch

The ever-present baobab tree frames this painting as if it were embracing the different characters. The Adansonia digitata (or Baobab tree) can grow to enormous sizes and carbon dating indicates that they may live to be 3,000 years old. An old Baobab tree can create its own ecosystem, as it supports the life of countless creatures, from the largest of mammals to the thousands of tiny creatures scurrying in and out of its crevices. Fiber from the bark is used to make rope, baskets, cloth, musical instrument strings, and waterproof hats. This are only some of the reasons why this tree is so important in Africa and why Lamin Dibba loves to portray them in his paintings. . . . . . #xultures#tree#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#africa#tribal#crafts#painting#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#africanart#Gambia#instahappy#art#nature#homedecor#kunst#arte#artisan#tree#baobab

The Senufo are closely related peoples of northern Ivory Coast and southeastearn Mali. They have severam ancestors and nature spirits. Maleeo and Kolotyolo ("Ancient Mother" and "Creator God") represent a dualistic deity. Kolotyolo is not approachable and can only be reached through Yiriigifolo or Nyehene. Their art inspired 20th-century European artists such as Pablo Picasso. In this work, the man has a bird on the head. Bird figures are among the many art forms associated with Poro, a society of initiated Senufo men. The woman has a jar on the head. When a baby is born, the following week is the naming day, and every woman will carry these jars with holy water. They put special leaves and water inside and wash the child, who will be blessed with long life and good health. . . . . . #xultures#calabash#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#africa#tribal#crafts#senufo#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#africanart#Mali#instahappy#art#nature#homedecor#kunst#arte#artisan#sculpture

This peculiar piece, created by Lamin Biai (Senegal), shows the beauty of the African way of life. The figure on the right is playing the kora. They carry the history of Africa and whenever people forget, this player is the only one who can remind them of it. During baptism he is the one authorized to reveal the name of the newborn. The second on the right is the balafon player and next to him is a woman carrying water. The figure on the left is a woman carrying wood. Lamin mixes acrylic painting and designed tissue to create a ‘real life’ effect. . . . . . #xultures#painting#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#africa#tribal#crafts#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#africanart#instahappy#art#legend#homedecor#kunst#arte#dailylife#artisan#gemälde#Senegal

These bowls are made of talcum stone, therefore they're quite heavy. They are beautifully designed with painted images of African symbols such as the elephant or the rhinoceros. For decoration or to store small objects, these bowls make the perfect combination. . . . . . #Africa#xultures#africanart#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#tribal#crafts#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#instahappy#art#traditions#homedecor#kunst#arte#colours#instagood#pureart#bowl#talc#carved

A fertility doll has a huge round head and body, and it is shaped like a cross. The head is symbolic of the feminine womb. African ancestors made symbols out of everything. There were no language barriers because symbols had the same meaning in all nations, and the fertility doll is one of those symbols. This piece has its origin in Ghana. It is believed it will induce pregnancy and ensure safe delivery at birth. . . . . . #Africa#xultures#africanart#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#tribal#crafts#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#instahappy#art#traditions#homedecor#kunst#arte#colours#instagood#pureart#fertility#Ghana

This Hippo was carved by Ousman Sowe, a Gambian artisan from the Brikama artisan market. His eyes are not as good as they used to be, so he only carves the pieces and lets the harder work (sanding and painting) to the young apprentices in the market. . . . . . #Africa#xultures#africanart#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#tribal#crafts#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#instahappy#art#traditions#homedecor#kunst#arte#colours#instagood#pureart#hippo#animallover#hippopotamus

This is a small version of the famous Dogon door. The 400,000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe, the god of plant rebirth. The first Dogon primordial ancestors, called Nommo, were bisexual water gods. They were created in heaven by the creator god Amma and descended from heaven to earth in an ark. . . . . . #Africa#xultures#africanart#culture#africanhistory#unique#artlover#handmade#african#tribal#crafts#artesania#instagood#instafab#treasure#einzigartig#instahappy#art#traditions#homedecor#kunst#arte#colours#instagood#pureart#dogon#door
