As I continue to wait for some consistently warmer weather here in Ontario, Canada, I'm taking my Instagram back to Southern Florida and our March Break family escape to the Florida Keys.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This iPhone photo of a Great Blue Heron was #ShotonMoment 60mm telephoto. With a dual-lens camera, that's a 4x zoom.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I photographed the heron on one of the gravel roads off US 41 in Big Cypress National Preserve. The area is part of the Great Birding Trail and is about 45 miles (72km) west of Miami. You can access The Everglades National Park from here. If you go south, you can take a private boat ride or state park boat ride around the backwaters of the Everglades and the 10,000 islands. If you go north, you can travel in an airboat around the swampy Everglades.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On US 41, make a stop at the Big Cypress Oasis Visitor Center and H.P. William Roadside Park for guaranteed sightings of wild alligators from the boardwalks. The roadside parks also have bathrooms. If you have some time, take some of the gravel roads for a slow drive around Big Cypress to spot birds like the roseate spoonbill (in season) in some of the roadside "water holes." If you're lucky, you might even spot a bear or panther. If you visit in Spring, many of the male birds will be in full display mode as they attempt to attract a mate. Look out for the Great Egrets and Anhingas. . Southern Florida and The Florida Keys is an excellent destination for a family trip, but pricier during March or Spring Break. I think we'll plan our visits for November again as it's not as busy and you can save money.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #andreareesphoto⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#shotoniphone#MomentTele

I can't get over the beauty of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. I recently had the opportunity to do some photo scouting in Banff. It's in preparation for a Canadian Rockies tour I'll be teaching photography on in early July 2020. I took this photo with my iPhone XSmax as this account is all my iPhone photography. For non-iPhone images head over to @andreareesphoto. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's been a while since I was in the Rockies and I almost forgot how spectacular it is. This is early Spring in Banff and a view of the Hoodoos, the rock formations in the lower left.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the snow melts and the lakes thaw out, you'll hear the crackling sound of the ice breaking up if you stop to take in the scene and listen. It was a great time to be in the Rockies as you get to witness the melt. The weather was bearable even at only 7-8 degrees Celsius (under 50 degrees for my American friends). Unfortunately, a couple of roads I wanted to check out was closed due to avalanche risk, but overall late April is worth a visit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can't rush a place like Banff, and I'm glad I had some time to myself to explore, discover, and stay in spots for as long as I wanted.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you're interested in joining me on a group tour to Banff, Jasper, The Icefields and Lake Louise while staying in the area's best hotels, send me a DM, and I'll be happy to connect you with Blue Skies Travel, the tour organizer/leader for the trip.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Canada is diverse and the natural beauty is hard to beat. If you don't live here, I hope you'll come to visit. It's a photographer's dream. All that beauty, sigh.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you been to Banff? If so, where did you take your favourite photo? Tag me in your photos of Banff as I'd love to see your images too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven't been, is it on your travel wishlist? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #andreareesphoto⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#shotoniphone

Oh Canada, what a beauty you are. . This view of Mount Rundle can be seen from Two Jack Lake in Banff National Park. Banff is in the province of Alberta and one of 39 National Parks in Canada. . This is my first visit to Banff in the Spring. I’ve skied here at Sunshine Village in winter and taken in the views in the summer and autumn. . I’m enjoying early Spring in Alberta with the the lakes thawing out, crocus flower popping up, not so busy roads, and the sights of deer and elk. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto#mybanff

Japan was high on both my son’s travel lists. As much as they love returning to places like Florida and British Columbia, they also love exploring new countries and cultures. . We spent 14 nights in Tokyo, Gotemba & Kyoto with the majority of our nights in Kyoto. One of the highlights of our visit was road tripping from Tokyo to Kyoto. We didn’t have an itinerary and booked our hotel about 30 minutes before we arrived. We just drove without much of a plan, turned down side roads, drove mountain passes and explored neighborhoods as we chased views of Mount Fuji. . We had one unsettling moment after a night in Gotemba. We stopped at the end of a road so I could photograph Mount Fuji through some tall grass. As I was about to take a photo, an explosion went off, loudly, and it startled me. I’m not sure if they were clearing trees as we saw some clearing or if it was a military exercise, we passed a military base. I jumped back in the car and we took off out of the area. We continued to hear the same sound but not as loudly, as we drove through other neighborhoods to catch a glimpse of Fuji-san. . Have you had any unsettling or unexpected moments on your travels? #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto

Every day in every corner of the world, the sun sets. Although our view may be different, we see the same sun. . It’s been another trip around the sun and I’m thankful for those that are a part of it. . I watched this sunset on this day, my birth day, in 2017 in one of my favourite places in the world, Kruger National Park, South Africa. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto

There’s just something about Kyoto at night - the bits of light, the shadows, the pop of red of the lanterns. . Kyoto is a photographer’s dream and I feel the most inspired and creative when I’m photographing at night. I’ve been twice and have barely scratched the surface. . What place or city inspires you? #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto#shotoniphonexsmax

In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you - Deepak Chopra
In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you - Deepak Chopra . We visited the Digital Art Museum on our recent family trip to Tokyo. It was the most stimulating place I’ve ever been. It was filled with colour, movement, and borderless art. Yet in the constant motion, you could still find stillness if you stopped to appreciate the art. . It’s worth a visit if you’ve never been to a place like it, especially if you’re travelling with children. There are some play areas and even a place to colour by the giant digital whale. I expected to find that area filled with children, instead it was full of adults taking the time to colour and perhaps taking a moment to be still. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto

Would you believe me if I told you that this was surrounded by urban development? . Wetlands, bird hides, trails, indigenous plants and 120 species of birds can be found here. . The first photo is the path to the two bird hides on Intaka Island. It is mostly unknown to tourists and most locals I asked had never heard of it or visited. Luckily, I learned about Intaka from a new friend on my 7th trip to Cape Town recently. I had the opportunity to visit this birding and nature lover’s paradise on one of my last days in Cape Town. I look forward to returning for a longer visit on my next trip in October 2019. . It is a 16 hectare wetlands and bird sanctuary. Intaka means 'bird' in isiXhosa. . Apart from the birding opportunities, it’s a wonderful oasis in Cape Town and Century City that offers a place to walk, take in nature and get away from it all. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto#fodorsonthego

The colourful huts of Muizenberg beach. I’m dreaming of ocean sounds, summer vibes of Cape Town and missing this daily view. . Most visitors to Cape Town don’t get far out of the city or explore lessor known spots, but I highly recommend escaping the concrete of the CBD for this sight and exploring Muizenberg, St. James & Kalk Bay. . In October 2019 you can join me for 7-days in Cape Town, I’ll be happy to show you around. . I’ve partnered with Penda Photo Tours to lead a Cape Town photo tour/workshop & volunteer photography program. . We’ll spend days exploring the highlights of Cape Town, visiting some not so well known parts too, and learning about tourism in Khayelitsha, all with ample photographic opportunities along the way. . You’ll work with me and my @thoawproject as we teach mobile photography to women who run important social impact programs in their communities so they may tell their stories and promote what they do. . If you believe in the power of photography to make a difference, connect with me and/or @pendaphoto, we’ll be happy to answer any questions. . Of course no visit to South Africa is complete without a visit to the Greater Kruger National Park. You have the option to join us for a photo safari. A time to relax and enjoy South Africa’s incredible wildlife and nature up close. . Check out my highlights for behind the scenes from my recent trip in Nov/Dec 2018 to Cape Town & Kruger. . If you’ve been considering a visit, don’t hesitate. You will love it there! I am thrilled to be able to share a country that is dear to my heart and help you on your photographic journey. . This is more than a photo tour, it’s an unique immersive experience that you will cherish for years to come. . Hope to see you in Cape Town in October 2019. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto

Looking good Table Mountain. It is said to be over 260 million years old, older than the Andes, the Alps, the Rocky Mountains and the Himalayas. . I’ve been in Cape Town for the last few days playing guide for my niece who is here for the first time. It’s my 7th visit (9th to South Africa) to the Mother City since my first almost 6 years ago. . I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve partnered with Penda Photo Tours to lead a volunteer photography program & Cape Town photo tour. . My youngest taking a photo of Mount Fuji on our recent #familytravel in Japan. . We spent 14 nights there, road tripped from Tokyo to Kyoto, ate all the udon and ramen, tried mochi and fluffy pancakes, visited temples and shrines, and they played Pokémon Go when I stopped to take photos as we wandered the streets and alleys of Kyoto. . Japan is a fantastic destination for a family trip. There are some challenging parts because we don’t speak Japanese, but google translate helped out. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto

The beautiful Yasaka Pagoda photographed through a Yukimi-gata lantern I found near the Shinto Kodai-ji Temple. . Wonderful views of the Pagoda with the surrounding mountains from the top of the hill beside Kodai-ji temple. We had the sight to ourselves as most tourists photograph it from the narrow streets near it. . It is 5-stories tall and towers over the rooftops in the historical Higashiyama district. It is a cultural landmark and iconic site of Kyoto. . It is the last remaining part of the buddhist Hokan-ji Temple and was first built in 592. It has been rebuilt several times after being destroyed by fire. The current pagoda was built in 1440. #shotoniphone#andreareesphoto#fodorsonthego
