Remembering my good friend, curator and critic, Bisi Silva, who just passed away after an illness. I am in shock and totally miserable. Bisi was a giant in the art world and was instrumental to the birth of my career as an exhibiting artist over twenty years ago. She was wicked smart, dedicated, professional, generous, humorous and a loyal friend. We will miss you, dear Bisi. Rest in peace. The Royals are Here: 1979 Thunderbird Acrylic on canvas 2019 Every car tells a story. The 1979 Thunderbird takes me down memory lane. Growing up in a middle class family, vehicles like this one were driven by those 'rich and privileged people' and not for us. I remember the first time I sat inside an air-conditioned vehicle. Ntu oyi! If you are Ibo, you can relate. It was as if I had died and gone to heaven, where life was literarily cooler and trendier. I was just a stunned little kid who earlier believed the best things in life were chasing grasshoppers and watching Danger Mouse. I loved Danger Mouse so you can imagine my shock. Looking back now, these things aren't that special anymore. We have all grown up and many of us have done well and owned a few nice whips ourselves. An air-conditioned car and house in the tropics is just a basic requirement nowadays. But I must say that for a long time, I believed women were the sexiest creatures with the best curves until I discovered super cars and nearly proposed to an Aston Martin Rapide. So I paint both chicks and whips. I am a story teller. I see lots of stories in both man and machine. #art#modernart#modernnigerianart#africanart#africanartist#painting#artexhibition#carlovers#supercars#thunderbird#f1#vintagecars#ucheedochie

The Shadows Acrylic on canvas 2018 You didn't come last night. I am sure there is a reason as always. You are very good with excuses. I know because I always believe you. But I am tired. I look in the mirror and I cannot recognize the woman I have become. You have a home and a wife to go back to. I have nothing but an endless craving for you. I guess that is my punishment for being the other woman. Do you ever think of me all alone here in your getaway pad? Do you think of how lonely and pathetic I am when you are not here? Life must mean something. I have no idea what mine means. A play thing perhaps? That is sad. I just want to be able to wake up in the morning and you will still be there. That will give my life more meaning. I have forgotten what it feels like to wake up next to someone. If I ever find love outside what we have, I hope you will let me go. This time, you have to let me go. Obsession can be a dirty word. It is all about context. If you are obsessed with someone such that you stalk them, take pictures of them and pin them up on a wall, serial killer style, that's a problem. But if you are devoted to your craft and you possess an uncompromising propensity for excellence, beauty and technological transcendence, you are also obsessed but the good type. Find a really good cause in life and don't just be passionate about it. Be obsessed. Welcome to 2019. I wish you and me old school happiness and contentment in this new year. That is the type our parents had back when integrity and a good name meant more than your account balance. I wish you success too because that is important as well. Please enjoy this 1970 Oldsmobile. It reminds me of the old days and the old ways. Post Cards for the Ex Acrylic on canvas 2018 When I ran into you the other day, you smiled at me and told me I look great. I didn't smile back and I had no compliments for you. How could I? I hear you are married now. Am I supposed to be happy for you? But then you touched my shoulders and asked me how I have been all these years and my feet turned to jelly. Those old feelings came rushing back. Did you miss me? Did you want to hug me when you saw me? I hope you did. Look what you are missing. Yes I stay in shape just in case I run into you. Why? Maybe it's because I miss you. But of course I can't tell you. Sometimes I miss the way you held me, the way we kissed and the love we made. But I can't tell you this of course. Too much pride. Still I hope you drool when you see me. I hope your jaw hits the floor hard when you see me. P/S If the characters we paint could speak, this is what this one would say. Anyway, hope to see you guys at the Born in Africa festival at Eko Atlantic City. #art#BornInAfricaFest#africanart#africanartist#nigerianart#nigerianartist#artexhibition#contemporaryart#contemporaryafricanart

Serenity and Grace Acrylic on Canvas 2018 Serenity and grace. That is how I remember her. Children notice everything. It is hard to believe because of how absent minded they appear while playing but they do. They notice the demeanor, gesticulations, opinions and temperament of their parents. We don't even realise how much attention we are paying until we grow up and realise that in many ways, we have become our fathers and mothers. One of my most enduring memories of my mother growing up was how calm and graceful she was and still is. Hers was a posture and aura that was very reassuring especially in tormentous times. It didn't matter what was happening at the time. Whenever mother walked into a room, everything was alright again. Life was suddenly promising again. All was well in the world again. Serenity and grace. These two words best describe her. Isn't it ironic the way we clashed with our parents growing up because we felt that they weren't sufficiently driven and ruthless enough to grab life by the pony tail? And then we grew up and with maturity came clarity. Now we look back and in more ways than one, we wish we were just like our parents. Calm, graceful and always playing the long game. #art#painting#africanart#portraitpainter#portrait#acrylicpainting#modernart#modernnigerianart#studioart#instagramart#instagram#lagosart#nigerianart#nigerianartist#africanartist#ucheedochie

Mother is Home Acrylic on Canvas 2018 I am trying for some reason to see the world through the eyes of a child. I was a child once. But I have almost forgotten what that felt like. Almost. One thing I never forgot though was the way my siblings and I felt each and every time our mother came home from work. It was magical. The way we ran to her and hugged her like we hadn't seen her in ten years. That is the magic of motherhood. It doesn't matter your status in life. If you are someone's mother, take pride in the fact that for just a few people on this planet, you mean the world. I am not a woman but I hope my kids are half as excited when they see me. I hope I mean that much to them. I get a lot of hugs from them though so that's a good sign. But I am not sure if it's because of the ice cream I bring home every week or that they are really happy to see their tired old man at the end of every working day. Let's hope it's the later. #art#africanart#nigerianart#painting#contemppraryart#contemporaryafricanart#nigerianartist#instagramart#instagram#modernart#modernnigerianart#studioart#motherhood#ucheedochie

Jostling for Positions Acrylic on canvas 2018 Inclusion. Balance. Representation. Less testosterone, more oestrogen. These are not values we pursue to patronise the opposition. This is the blue print to our survival as one human community. What is your hope for the world ? Peace? Security? Prosperity? Less aggression and lower crime? The road to these desires pass through inclusion of all people. We are talking all genders, faiths, orientations and persuasions. So remember the point of our struggle. This is the purpose of our hustle. #art#africanart#africanartist#nigerianart#nigerianartist#contemppraryart#contemporaryafricanart#indigenousart#galleryart#galleryartist#lagosart#instagramart#instagram#igboart#studioart

Elegant Travellers Acrylic on canvas 2018 There is an admirable grace in the manner in which our people choose to present themselves even when life is less than perfect. It is a deliberate choice to put our best foot forward. If elegant visibility is proof of a life that matters, we are determined not to be left behind. You only need to look at our social media feeds to witness our commitment to telling our stories on glowing terms. Perception is reality they say. So when we are in front of that camera, actual reality and struggle fade out and are replaced by contrived and optimistic ones. 'This is us', it says. 'Look at us. We don't want your pity. But we will take your admiration and respect.' #art#visualart#halfwaythroughathousandmiles#jointexhibition#artexhibition#painting#painter#contemppraryart#contemporaryafricanart#nigerianart#nigerianartist#lagosartexhibition#ucheedochie#tolualiki

Moving Up Acrylic on canvas 2018 A piece I did in celebration of modern Nigerian architecture and the rapid developement of our Nigerian cities. This reminds me of a brief discussion I had with a veteran art collector recently. He was at this last exhibition of mine, bought some art and told me that while he loved new pieces like this one, he wouldn't be able to resell them at Sothebys in the future because they aren't typical of African art. I smiled. I understand him though but it just reminds me that our job as cultural tutors is a never ending one. Lived experience is valid experience. We cannot live in modern apartments, duplexes and mansions and then when it is time to paint how and where we live, we begin to paint huts and shanties because that is what is accepted as 'African' in creative terms. That is self deprecating and dishonest, even if it is good business. An imagery doesn't have to be indigenous to be African. When we intigrate a modern image or motif into our art work and present it as African art, we are not claiming ownership for something we did not invent. We are simply owning our experience of that thing as part of the reality that has contributed and shaped who we are as Africans. We did not invent Coca Cola for instance but we consume it. It is part of our lived experience and therefore part of our contemporary culture. In that regard, the Coca Cola motif is just as african as a hut or drums or cowries because they are all part of our culture now. Yeah. It was an interesting and amusing conversation though. Drifter Acrylic on Canvas 2018 The search for a calm and peaceful place is a universal human desire. Some find that peace in solitude, among family and friends or in religious places of worship. Lately, a growing number of people have been seeking that peace in codeine, a cough medicine that has the ability to totally numb the senses and put the user in a trance-like state. This codeine abuse is a growing epidemic among young people and there is a theory that it is all linked to an attempt to get away from the devastating psychological effects of terrorism and economic hardship. It is heartbreaking. The troubled and traumatized are searching for their peaceful place too. It is alarming how far some will go in order to find it. Drifter is part of a collection of work featured in my just concluded art exhibition 'Half Way Through a Thousand Miles' with Tolu Aliki.
