HUMMUS HUMMUS HUMMUS!

Every now and then, the stars align and everything comes
HUMMUS HUMMUS HUMMUS! Every now and then, the stars align and everything comes together just right. And by that I mean, we're eating hummus! We stayed at an excellent apartment in Tra Que, near Hoi An for a week that had a kitchen, which meant we could cook for ourselves for a change (such a treat!). It turned out that this kitchen had a blender (star number 1). We then found out that our favourite nearby restaurant (@nourisheatery), made their own tahini (star number 2). When we were out buying some veg from the local shop we noticed some tins of canellini and butter beans for sale (star number 3). And if that wasn't enough, there was a bakery near us that sold amazingly tasty, vegan, whole grain loaves of bread (4th and final star!). So we set about blending up our own garlicky hummus with these beans (no chickpeas unfortunately but you can't win them all!) and settled down to some amazing lunches on our balcony with some pretty special views (pic 3) and listening to the bells and gongs that would go off in the tiny temple in the field next door (pic 4). Missing this place already, but so glad we were able to get our hummus fix, it's been a while! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hoian#veganhoian#traque#vegantraque#hummus#houmous

By far our favourite place to eat in Hoi An has been @nourisheatery. A very new, nearly all vegan, restaurant. I'm not too sure how many times we went there, but we never had a bad meal. These vegan burgers were a particular treat and the vegan tzatziki was ace. They do a falafel burger and one called a WAUW burger (couldn't tell you what it was made from cos I've forgotten, but I've eaten several and it was always amazing!). Frank, the owner, is lovely and brought us little tasters of chocolate or brownies that they'd made while we were sitting there as well. It's just a tip top place! We were staying in Tra Que near Hoi An in the 'Herbal Village', which was basically a huge, beautiful, expanse of allotments and rice fields. So our 20 minute cycle to Nourish was an absolute joy as well (as you can see from the pics)! It was made especially nice as it was Vietnamese new year last week and everywhere was decorated with flags and bunting and happy new year signs! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hoian#veganhoian#traque#vegantraque#burger#veganburger

Top grub and top sights in Hue! After a long day of sightseeing round Hue the other day we treated ourselves to our second trip to the brilliant Lien Hoa Vegetarian restaurant. An excellent place with some excellent food and a confusing English menu! Seeing as we knew everything was tasty here we took a punt and ordered a dish which had been translated to 'fried bumps'. It was a cracking bowl of bok choi fried with garlic and chilli, delightful! We also stuffed our faces with jackfruit fried with sesame seeds (tasted uncannily like chicken!), long beans and garlic, and the classic of tofu with tomato sauce. It was all great and cheap as you like. It was a lot of fun going round all the tombs, pagodas and markets around Hue. There are so many of them you could spend weeks here and not see them all! The only thing that held us back was the intense heat! Just before dinner we also managed to have a glass of the cheapest beer we've had so far, coming in at 8000 dong, about 25p! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#streetfood#veganstreetfood#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hue#veganhue

CHICKPEAS IN VIETNAM!!! Oof! It's been so long, I can't even remember the last time we had chickpeas! And these badboys didn't let us down. There's a restaurant on An Bang beach near Hoi An called The Fisherman, and it's ALL VEGAN! It's owned and run by a family who had been fishing in these parts for generations, but then one day decided to make the change and turned their fishy restaurant completely vegan! This chickpea curry was incredible. Obviously it was a bit on the sweet side (it's Vietnam, and we have learnt that is to be expected!), but it was still excellent and I'd like to eat it everyday! We also had their burger with sweet potato chips. So tasty! Such an excellent restaurant. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hoian#veganhoian#chickpeas#burger#veganburger

Caves and chips! We made our way to the incredible Paradise Cave in Phong Nha and were blown away by its beauty. We also managed to time it so there was hardly anyone else there! Which was nice. It's only a half hour moped ride from town through some wonderful countryside. And inside it's expertly lit and very easy to navigate as there's a boardwalk which takes you about 1km into it. It is HUGE! We spent ages there, marvelling at all the weird and wonderful rock formations. When we got back we treated ourselves to an excellent vegan dinner at the Nguyen Shack, where we were staying, of tofu in coconut and ginger, water morning glory, rice and a side of super tasty chips! You really can't go wrong with a side of chips with most meals to be honest! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#phongna#veganphongna#nguyenshack#cave#paradisecave

Jungle trekking, caving and cave swimming in Phong Nha was awesome. And I think we can all agree I looked pretty damn cool doing it! I went on the Abandoned Valley trek with Jungle Boss in Phong Nha the other day and had a great time. Better still, they catered very well for a vegan. They barbecued the tofu before the meat, and set it all out separately. We all got to make our own spring rolls and dip them in this amazing local coriander/lemon/chilli condiment (it was so bloody tasty!). And there was so much food I was unsure whether I'd be able to finish the hike (spoiler: I did). We went caving into the Dark Cave and swam into to the E Cave, and trekked for about 12km through the surrounding jungle including a LOT of river crossings. We were all super muddy and phenomenally sweaty by the time we got back. Awesome day though. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#vietnam#veganvietnam#phongnha#veganphongnha#jungleboss#abandonedalley#abandonedvalleytrek#trek#jungle#jungletrek

Oof! Hanoi has banged out some MASSIVE contenders for the prestigious accolade of 'best sandwich of the trip'! The hands down Hanoi winner has got to be the TLAT at La Studio. That's tempeh, lettuce, avacado and tomato to the layperson! The tempeh is all smokey and crispy and delightful. You can get it in wholewheat bread or, if you've any class, get it all crammed in a beautiful bagel. The cashew mayo is proper Dane Bowers as well (aka Another Level). This is what sandwich dreams are made of. A close second is the lentil banh mi in a huge toasted white baguette at Lovegan. So tasty. Genuinly reminded me of when we used to purposefully make too much lentil roast on a Sunday so we could cram it in a back-at-work-on-Monday sandwich. Admittedly, this version was missing roast potatoes and a smothering of gravy, but it was good enough for a second visit. The third pic is also from Lovegan. A tempeh banh mi in rye bread. To be honest, the banh mi was decent but nothing to go crazy about. I really only included this pic cos I loved the plate! And finishing the podium positions is the mushroom sandwich from Zenith yoga in Tay Ho. An absolute pain to eat, but a taste sensation. The only reason we're not having it again is because it was pretty spenny! Oh, and if you're in Hanoi and fancy a bit of live music, then get yourself to Binh Minh jazz club. We had a cracking night. The pianist was phenomenal, and the bassist had the best expression on his face for the entire night! Bangin. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hanoi#veganhanoi#sandwich#vegansandwich#lastudio#omhanoi#zenithyogahanoi#zenithyoga#lovegan#banhmi#veganbanhmi

Triple decker vegan burger? Yes please! Took a quick trip to Cat Ba and Ha Long Bay up in North Vietnam and stuffed our faces with this monster at Buddha Belly restaurant. A seitan patty, homemade hashbrown, and a slice of fried tofu made up the 3 layers, and that all gets jam packed with salad and sauces. It was not easy to eat, and my beard was half-burger-half-hair by the time I'd finished, but for 45kVND (about £1.50) we couldn't complain! It wasn't the greatest burger we've ever had, but it was a nice change, and the chips were tip top. We took a tour round all the bays and islands in the area and it was breathtakingly beautiful. Kayaking through caves surrounded by huge rocks with wild monkeys looking down on us was awesome. Although it was a bit chilly, it was nice to be here in the off season. With all the hotels, restaurants, Guesthouses and boats everywhere, you can tell it will be rammo (in the main room) when high season hits. And as you can see in the last pic, there's a huge development going up to monopolise one of the few beaches on Cat Ba as well, which is sad. But it's such a beautiful place it's no surprise it's so popular. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#whatvegansdrink#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hanoi#veganhanoi#catba#vegancatba#halong#halongbay#burger#veganburger

Bloody love a buffet! If you're ever in Hanoi, get yourself down to Veggie Castle immediately, cos for 70kVND (just over 2 quid) you can eat a quite disgusting amount of incredibly tasty vegan Vietnamese food at their buffet. And you don't need to Partridge it with your plates either as they provide you with are huge! We went there more than once as the options change daily and were never disappointed. Yes, we are gross. But we are also full and happy! We went for a walk to see Uncle Ho the other day as well. Even though the pavements around the complex were HUGE and we were pretty much the only people on them, Niall was still told he had to wheel his bike in the busy road rather than walk it next to us! There's a weird modern art/history of Ho Chi Minh museum in there. It wasn't for me, it got a bit too strange. But other than that, another cracking day in Hanoi. Ps. Bonus points for spotting Gen hiding in the last pic! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#hanoi#veganhanoi#buffet#veganbuffet

It's hard to beat chips and rice! We ended up spending 9 nights in the beautiful Vietnamese countryside town of Ninh Binh (much to the shock of everyone there as people only tend to stay 2 or 3 nights max!). But when you can get tofu cooked in a delicious tomato sauce on top of locally grown rice and some tasty as chips, why leave! In all honesty, we didn't just stay for the food (there's not a great deal of variety in Ninh Binh for vegans so tasty though it was, it did get a bit samey). The countryside there is just stunning, and we were happy to spend hours walking or cycling around it everyday. We also took a very misty/atmospheric boat trip through Van Long nature reserve, which was just lovely (we timed it rather badlywith the weather meaning that the visibility was particularly poor! But that gave it quite an eerie vibe, which was cool!) And to top it all off, we finally met up with a friend we made back in July last year in India. He had cycled his way from Hyderabad to Vietnam! So what better activity to do with him than some more cycling! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#whatvegansdrin#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#vietnam#veganvietnam#ninhbinh#veganninhbinh#vanlong

Spent a lot of time looking up at massive old trees in Cuc Phuong national park! The weather has gone down hill a bit in Ninh Binh, with rain and mist everywhere. But that didn't stop us enjoying the beautiful national park about an hours drive from the town. We took a 3 hour, muddy walk through the rainy rainforest. And loved it! The low clouds gave it such a different, eerie, feel and at times the trees were so tall that they just disappeared into them! Afterwards we sat down to eat some pretty decent vegan crispy fried veg noodles at the parks restaurant. We were pretty pleased with how easy it was to describe vegan food there (using a combination of our bad Vietnamese and some broken English!). And even though it was the only place you could eat there, it was surprisingly cheap at around 40,000VND per person (just over a quid). Decent. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#vietnam#veganvietnam#ninhbinh#veganninhbinh#cucphuong#vegancucphuong#nationalpark

Ninh Binh you freezing cold beauty! Our first day in this beautiful town in Northern Vietnam was a chilly one! But the guys at Nguyen Shack will sit a heater right next to you and serve you up a huge vegan portion of tofu in tomato sauce with some super tasty local rice. Just what you need to warm yourself up in the evenings! They also brew their own rice wine, so if the food doesn't warm you up then this phenomenally strong spirit will. We took a walk up to Hang Mua viewpoint to look in awe at the countryside round here. Huge rock formations jutting out of the flat plains like nobody's business! So beautiful. It was 500 steps up and made us realise how unfit we currently are! So worth it though. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#vietnam#veganvietnam#ninhbinh#veganninhbinh#nguyenshack

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Although we've managed to time our arrival to Hanoi for one of their coldest spells (it's absolutely gibbers!) it hasn't stopped us heading out and wandering round this cool city. It also hasn't stopped us loading up on vegan Banh Mis from Banh Mi 25 to help with the new year's hangover! These beauts are so tasty. Especially the ones filled with deep fried tofu. Just what you need on a chilly day when you're feeling a tad peaky! Good luck to everyone doing Veganuary this month! @veganuary is almost upon us and it's time to start your new year off with a cruelty free bang! If you're planning on doing Veganuary (especially if you're planning on doing it while travelling or on holiday) then check out Gen's blog post about how to find vegan food wherever you are. Even if you're already vegan, you might find some useful tips here as well. We have met quite a few travellers who told us they have stopped being vegan when travelling because they thought it would be too hard so didn't try, or gave up along the way (don't get me started!). But we're happy to tell you that it really isn't hard to keep your travels cruelty free (and you don't need to look that far on here to see a load of other vegan travellers who will vouch the same). So check out our post (link in bio) and good luck with Veganuary! (and you know...well played to all who are already vegan, cos you're awesome!). And feel free to share any other tips you have that we've missed to help everyone along. #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#whatvegansdrink#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#streetfood#veganstreetfood#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#happycow#blog#newblogpost#veganuary#vegantips

Hope everyone had an amazing vegan Xmas! I won't lie, our food on the day wasn't the best. We managed to find a roasted veg Banh Mi with some pretty awesome chips for our Xmas lunch (at a very friendly place called Jibes), but the less said about the Indian curry dinner the better I'm afraid! Wash that all down with a load of beers and it's all good really! Along with the beer, what really helped make Xmas was swimming in the sea, tropical crazy golf and some pretty epic views over the beach here in Mui Ne, Vietnam (and skyping our families at home of course!). Can't, and won't, complain! I do hope more places are open for lunch now Xmas is over though! #travellingwithavegan#vegan#vegancommunity#whatveganseat#whatvegansdrink#vegantravel#veganfoodshare#veganfoodporn#plantbased#crueltyfree#vegansofig#vietnam#veganvietnam#muine#veganmuine#christmas#veganChristmas#Xmas#veganxmas#beach

Vegan food on the Mekong Delta floating markets. Tasty! We took an amazing sunrise boat trip in the Mekong Delta near Cantho in Southern Vietnam to see the floating markets. It was amazing to see the bustling markets going on with boats whizzing around us selling their goods. One lady hooked her boat onto ours and served us up a very tatsy veg noodle breakfast (we were told that it wouldn't be "very delicious" as we asked for it without pork thrown in at the end! But I'm pleased to to say that it was, in fact, very delicious!). It was so beautiful cruising through the narrow rivers as the sun slowly rose. It made getting up at 4.30am worth it (and the phenomenally strong Vietnamese coffee helped make it possible!).
