Astronomers Confirm An Exoplanet With No Atmosphere For The First Time.⠀ ⠀ Over the last few years, researchers have discovered a treasure trove of rocky planets orbiting red dwarfs, small stars with a radius 60 percent smaller than our Sun. Despite their size, these stars are very active – so much so that many believe the planets around them may struggle to keep an atmosphere. Now, new research published in Nature strengthens this idea.⠀ ⠀ A Harvard-led team of astronomers looked at 100 hours of observations of exoplanet LHS 3844b to identify signs of an atmosphere. They confidently ruled out a dense atmosphere (10 times what we have on Earth) and a less dense atmosphere. The model that best fits the data is a barren rocky planet, similar to Mercury but with a much hotter dayside pushing 770 °C ( over 1400 °F). This is the very first time we've been able to say conclusively whether a terrestrial exoplanet has an atmosphere or not!⠀ ⠀ The planet has a radius about 1.3 times that of Earth's own and orbits a red dwarf named LHS 3844, located 48 light-years away in the constellation Indus in the southern sky. It was among the first exoplanets discovered by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) after it launched last year.⠀ ⠀ The planet orbits the star in 11 hours, being just 10 million kilometers (6.3 million miles) away from it. That’s about 7 percent of the distance between the Earth and Sun. Since then, nobody else has walked on the Moon, and the only other samples ever brought back were 301 grams of material collected in the 1970s by a trio of Soviet missions called Luna 16, Luna 20, and Luna 24. Early next year, however, China is poised to be the first to fill this gap, via a robotic mission designed to land on Mons Rümker, a sprawling volcanic ediface believed to contain some of the Moon’s youngest volcanic rocks. The mission, called Chang’e 5 (CE-5), is part of China’s Chang’e program, named for the ancient Chinese goddess of the moon. In 2018 and early 2019, CE-4 and a sister mission called Queqiao landed a rover on the far side of the Moon and positioned a communication satellite in an orbit high above the Moon’s far side, where it could relay communications from the rover back to Earth. (Radio signals cannot be beamed directly to Earth from the far side, because the Moon is in the way.) The death of a star⁠ ⁠ This observation of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows a dark, gloomy scene in the constellation of Gemini. The subject of this image confused astronomers when it was first studied — rather than being classified as a single object, it was instead recorded as two objects, owing to its symmetrical lobed structure (known as NGC 2371 and NGC 2372, though sometimes referred to together as NGC 2371/2). ⁠ ⁠ These two lobes are visible to the upper right and lower left of the frame, and together form something known as a planetary nebula. NGC 2371/2 formed when a Sun-like star reached the end of its life and blasted off its outer layers, shedding the constituent material and pushing it out into space to leave just a superheated stellar remnant behind. It is about 8 degrees south of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula is bubble-like, surrounding a Wolf-Rayet star named EZ Canis Majoris. This star is in the brief, pre-supernova phase of its stellar evolution. The nebula is about 4,530 light-years (1,389 pc) away from Earth, but some sources indicate that both the star and the nebula are up to 5,870 light-years (1,800 pc) away. BOLHA ESPACIAL Esfera na constelação de Órion resulta da perda de material de uma estrela envelhecida – um processo que deverá ocorrer com o nosso Sol ☀️ Uma alga? Uma água-viva? O protagonista desta foto, capturada pelo Telescópio Espacial Hubble e divulgada pela Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA), não é nada disso. Trata-se de um enorme objeto esférico de gás, denominado NGC 2022 e localizado na constelação de Órion. O NGC 2022 foi expelido para o espaço por uma estrela envelhecida. É ela que aparece no centro da “bolha”, brilhando em meio aos gases que anteriormente a mantinham durante a maior parte de sua vida. Quando estrelas como o Sol chegam a uma idade avançada, expandem-se e brilham em vermelho. Essas supostas gigantes vermelhas começam então a perder suas camadas externas de material para o espaço. Mais da metade da massa de uma dessas estrelas pode ser derramada dessa maneira, formando uma camada de gás circundante. Gravitational Waves!〰🌊 . Gravitational waves are 'ripples' in the fabric of space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916 in his general theory of relativity. Einstein's mathematics showed that massive accelerating objects (such as neutron stars or black holes orbiting each other) would disrupt space-time in such a way that 'waves' of distorted space would radiate from the source (like the movement of waves away from a stone thrown into a pond). Furthermore, these ripples would travel at the speed of light through the Universe, carrying with them information about their cataclysmic origins, as well as invaluable clues to the nature of gravity itself. . The strongest gravitational waves are produced by catastrophic events such as colliding black holes, the collapse of stellar cores (supernovae), coalescing neutron stars or white dwarf stars, the slightly wobbly rotation of neutron stars that are not perfect spheres, and possibly even the remnants of gravitational radiation created by the birth of the Universe. . In 2017, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish for their role in the direct detection of gravitational waves. . Results of two stellar companions in a gravitational waltz, several thousand light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Centaurus. The stellar duo, consisting of a red giant and white dwarf, are too close together to see individually in this view. But the consequences of their whirling about each other are two vast shells of gas expanding into space like a runaway hot air balloon. Both stars are embedded in a flat disk of hot material that constricts the outflowing gas so that it only escapes away above and below the stars. This apparently happens in episodes because the nebula has two distinct nested hourglass-structures. The bubbles of gas and dust appear brightest at the edges, giving the illusion of crab legs. X-rays from Chandra X-Ray Observatory (@NASAChandraXRay) are shown in blue and purple, and have helped astronomers confirm that most of the oxygen in the universe is synthesized in massive stars. The amount of oxygen seen here is enough for thousands of solar systems. Can you tell what it is? 🤔⁣ ⁣ The color palette in the clouds is more intense than usual. The colorful bands, which flow in opposite directions at various latitudes, result from different atmospheric pressures. Lighter bands rise higher and have thicker clouds than the darker bands. Powerful ultraviolet radiation and fast winds from the bluest and hottest stars have blown a big bubble around the cluster. Moving into the surrounding nebula, this torrent of radiation sculpted the tall, dark stalks of dense gas, which are embedded in the walls of the nebula. These gaseous monoliths are a few light-years tall and point to the central cluster. The stalks may be incubators for new stars. On a smaller scale, a cluster of dark clouds called "Bok" globules resides at the top right corner. These clouds are composed of dense dust and gas and are about 10 to 50 times more massive than the Sun. Resembling an insect's cocoon, a Bok globule may be undergoing a gravitational collapse on its way to forming new stars.
