During February, millions of monarch butterflies migrate into Southern California after passing winter in the Transvolcanic Mountains of Mexico. It has been stated that future generations of these butterflies will not be able to navigate back home due to changing climate. Monarch butterflies navigate through the use of a sun compass embedded in their mid-brains, however the mechanics of their use are still a mystery. Reverse migration has been documented, but monarchs do prefer to spend winters in microclimates that allow their metabolism to decrease, in order to avoid freezing. Temperate is the driving force of migration for monarchs and climate change will cause a disruption. Wild Edens: South Asia, a documentary series just released and tackles the issues of climate change, as it points to the vulnerable habitats of India and Bangladesh. It highlights awe-inspiring landscapes that hold endangered wildlife and also focuses on dense forests and remote deserts, including a backdrop of mountain ranges. Actress/activist Freida Pinto lends her voice to the film and has endorsed several sustainable development causes, including the UN Global Goals campaign. The film’s aim is to spotlight issues of global climate change and the importance of moving towards low-carbon energy. Malawai is prone to droughts, flooding and severe thunderstorms due to its proximity to the East African Rift Valley. The country also experiences earthquakes, along with the other natural disasters and it has been noted that climate change intensifies the frequencies of these events. In Vancouver, British Columbia, a wildlife sculpture standing in a high traffic downtown area was donned with a huge plastic six pack cover with a tag crediting the environmental group Plastic Pollution Coalition, proving that the animal community suffers from plastic pollution caused by humans. There is no doubt that our oceans are littered with plastic from basic items such as beauty products, bags and bottles. This plastic pollution results in marine animals digesting plastic waste, which leads to dire health outcomes and in some cases death. Versova Beach in Mumbai was littered with plastic and trash that measured 5.5 feet high a few years ago. In what is known as “the world’s largest beach cleanup”, over 5.3 million kilograms (nearly 12M lbs.) of trash were removed over a course of 85 weeks and with the help of 1,000 volunteers. The initiative was started by one man - Afroz Shah, on a mission to transform what was once referred to as a dump, into a pristine coastline. This cleanup allowed the Olive Ridley turtles to make a comeback and start nesting on the beach once again. In just one week, at least 80 turtles made their way into the Arabian Sea after hatching from their nests. Shah continues to educate villagers and people living in slums along the coastline about sustainable waste practices, so that they understand the value of not littering. French sculptor Paulo Grangeon spotlights the reality of animal endangerment across the world through his “Pandas on Tour” exhibit. Creating 1,600 paper-mache bears that depict the number left on the planet, he has brought attention to the issue in more than 20 countries, including visibility at the Eiffel Tower. Due to logging, agriculture and infrastructure expansion in China, giant pandas are suffering the consequences of environmental deforestation as they need to digest 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo per day, which can take up to 16 hours of foraging. Climate change has also slowed down bamboo production which makes up 90% of the panda’s diet. Millions of people are affected by the various natural disasters that China faces throughout the years. It’s vast landscape invites disasters such as typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and droughts. The world’s worst disasters have hit China such as the 1998 Yangtze River floods which left 15 million people homeless and resulted in thousands losing their lives. Small farms (25 acres or less) produce over 70 percent of the world’s food but are facing numerous obstacles to sustain their livelihoods such as climate change and drought. In some cases climate change has caused intense storms and rainfall, thereby damaging crops. These small farms also bolster biodiversity and increase food security as only 12 plants and five animal species make up 75 percent of what the world consumes. Food systems are vulnerable to natural disasters and disease outbreak. (Source: National Geographic. Due to an extremely cold winter in Japan, macaques (also referred to as snow monkeys) are bathing in hot springs to warm their bodies and take some shelter from the harsh weather. Climate change is causing many animals across the world to adapt to new habitats and change behaviors. Many are forced to migrate to new ground and seek out additional survival skills.
