HERITAGE UNEDITED One of the most photographed architectural marvels of the world, the Taj Mahal has more than one perspective in space- changing as one travels toward or away from it, in and around it- changing colours with the tones of the sky and surroundings. No number of filters or editing can capture the real and true beauty and the layers of history which led to the architectural marvel we all witness today- if at all! CHOKING HERITAGE AND THE TAJ Around the world, the Taj Mahal is one of the geographic "tags" associated with India and its layers of incredible past. Amongst environmentalists and advocates of social-environmental justice (like myself), the Taj is a focal point in over two decades of environment-industry-livelihood battle. A lot of actions have been implemented, yet the heritage landmark chokes in the fumes of we the humans. USER BY DAY, OPEN DEFECATOR BY NIGHT There are over 1.1 billion people (more than 3.3 times the population of United States of America) across the world who are forced to defecate in open- it is not a practice; it is a survival instinct! In the age of growing slum tourism, India provides incredible platform to dismantle myths and wrong ideas around pressing challenges associated with sanitation deprivation and open defecation. Fact 1- Open defecation is not a problem of the "developing" world alone. Fact 2- Over 400 million of this cohort is female. Fact 3- Nearly 70% of these women get assaulted, or sexually harassed on a daily basis on their route to relieve Fact 4- Hundreds of women, men, children (with no updated figure) have lost their limbs while crossing or relieving along railway lines, or other arteries of transportation Fact 5- Mere provision of a toilet facility with four walls does not ensure eradication of open defecation- there are women who are developing makeshift arrangements to not defecate in open while in a confined facility/space. Several are users by day and open defecators by night! Copyright @mahak.agrawal Coming June, I will be working with @changedotorg as part of “SHE CREATES CHANGE” programme with a mission to change narratives of sanitation deprivation in India. https://www.myincrediblestory.in/share-story/user-by-day-open-defecator-by-night #incredibleindia#nationalgeographic#urban#narrative#change

FINDING SPACE AMIDST URBAN OASIS When it comes to wildlife, we the 'urban' Indians teleport ourselves to a wildlife park or national forest or any other "wilderness" region. Look outside your balcony, the monkey menace you report to local authorities to take away, or post photos over the social media- these ancestors of ours are not the source of menace. They are simply trying to find a little bit of space, looking up at high concrete blocks we call home- a home built at the expense of THEIR home. Almudena Cemetery of Madrid dating back to 1880s is a peculiar case where the number of cemetery occupants far exceed city inhabitants- about 5 million dead have been buried at la Almudena, while the city proper now has just over 3.2 million living souls. Its location in La Elipa district was part of a plan originally set into motion during the Napoleonic occupation to improve public health by building new graveyards outside the city. In the years since the city has grown a lot, but even today, it’s still a bit of a hike to get there. Maschen Marshaling Yard near Hamburg is a real Eldorado for railway fans. So many tracks, so many freight cars – and, even though hardly anyone can be seen, everything seems to be in a state of constant movement. The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, also known as the Third Bosphorus Bridge, connects the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey to the European side. Opened to traffic in August 2016, the bridge is one of the tallest bridges in the world, located near the Black Sea entrance of the Bosphorus Strait. Unfortunately, the bridge like most other large infrastructure projects was built at the cost of thousands of trees and ecological services they provided to us humans- all for reasons of mislocation of site- @mahak.agrawal Source Imagery @europeanspaceimaging Captured on June 24, 2017, by Worldview-4 Sensor #istanbul#turkey#bridge#blacksea

I spy with my little eye, the 'Eye of the Sahara'! Also known as Eye of Africa, the Richat Structure is a deeply eroded geological (circular) feature in the Sahara's Adrar Plateau, near Ouadane, west-central Mauritania- having concentric circles of igneous rocks which have undergone different degrees of changes and challenges. The site is also a hotspot for archaeological investigation, where diverse stone tools have been found in the layers beneath the Structure. From mountains to rivers to cities to water- we now move to lands of no (or little) water: DESERT The Sahara Desert, located in Africa, is the largest hot desert in the world. It spans approximately 4,800 kilometres in length from Red sea in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, and approx. 1,800 kilometre in width from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Sahel belt. The desert is known for its expansive stone plateaus, sand dunes, dune fields, sand seas, gravel plains, dry valleys, dry lakes, and salt flats. Scientists have found fossils of sea creatures, shells and humans buried in the regions earth- indicating that the region was once 'Green'- converting from Savannah to desert region. Kenai Fjords National Park
Power of Water, Ice (and a pocket full of sunshine) Kenai Fjords National Park of Alaska, USA lies at the edge of the Kenai Peninsula. "Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords' crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests around this vast expanse of ice. Sugpiaq people relied on these resources to nurture a life entwined with the sea" @nationalparkservice Today, much like the rest of the Earth, margins of the National Park's glaciers are shrinking with rising air, water temperatures and changing climate. Torres del Paine National Park or Parque Nacional Torres del Paine of Chile is one of the most mind-numbingly beautiful spaces on Earth. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and the eighth wonder of the world in 2013, the Torres del Paine National Park has diverse geography of majestic massifs, turquoise lakes, icebergs, rivers, forests and extensive pampas visited by guanacos, ñandúes and pumas. Much like the rest of the Earth, this gem of nature is under the threat of climate change. In November 2018, a house-sized iceberg measuring 350 by 380 meters (1,150 by 1,250 feet) split off from the Grey Glacier in Torres del Paine National Park making world news. In the past two decades alone, shrinkage of glacier margins and glacial calving (splitting of glaciers into tiny icebergs) has increased tremendously. Water exists in all shades and hues of blue, green and in some instances pink, orange! But, it also exists in three states of matters - liquid, gas and solid, often simultaneously. Located within the Columbia-Shuswap regional district of Canada, Glacier National Park marked by the jagged peaks covered with snow is one of the world's first International Peace Park. Of course today, the National Park and its glaciers' margins are receding at rapid rates, owing to rising global temperatures and changing the climate. It is not only about what we leave for future generations, but it is also about what we are doing or not doing in our past for our own future! Another day, another week, and another feature on WATER! Today, we are off to Maldives islands and another one of its few uninhabited islands of Kudalhaimendhoo. Lying south-east of the Maaungoodhoo Harbour, Kudalhaimendhoo coral island is one of the 16 (out of a total of 51) uninhabited islands of the Shaviyani Atoll. Who knows, one day it will also be covered along its length and breadth by a luxury resort and visited by explorers like you and me? Development, construction, tourism are not all evil- when conducted in a sensible, environmentally friendly way, we humans and our environs can ACTUALLY live in harmony. On a side note, is it just me or the island looks like an upside down NIKE logo? Just do it? Created by @mahak.agrawal Imagery @cnes_france@airbus_space . #turningthetide#maldives
