Pipettes are among the most used and abused laboratory instruments, fundamental to any work involving measurement of liquids. These range from simple hand held pipettes to programmable electronic ones. If they are not accurate and precise, a scientist won’t be confident in their results. 💧 The Crick SEC team includes a specialist Liquid Handling Engineer who maintains and calibrates the 6,000 plus pipettes on site. There’s an ongoing ‘clinic’ to give a health check to the pipettes, undertaking repairs and preventative maintenance. Those that can no longer be fixed often have a second life, with the components being re-used wherever possible. 💧 Find out more about the extraordinary behind-the-scenes work at the Crick at our new exhibition, Craft & Graft: Making Science Happen. . #craftandgraft#science#design#tech#craft#sciart#visitlondon#discoverlondon#freelondon#daysout#kingscross#stpancras#research#pipette#pipettes#health#discovery#wellbeing#disease#technician#exhibition#gallery#museum#event#scientist#lab#liquid#laboratorylife#engineering#tool

The beauty of electron microscopy. Last night at the Crick Late you could discover ‘hidden worlds’. This is a sample of Diatom - a micro algae from Japan. It was put through an electron microscope and magnified x8000. It was then coloured in-order for us to learn more about the sample . To discover more about the people who make these hidden worlds happen visit our exhibition Craft & Graft: Making Science Happen . #cricklate#electronmicroscopy#diatom#craftandgraft#london#kingscross#science#biology#timeoutlondon@timeoutlondon

Have a heart, or maybe a spare? Can our organs be regenerated, enhanced or altered to create spare parts? Science Gallery London’s SPARE PARTS season explores the art, science, ethics and technology that enables human repair and alteration. Developed alongside researchers from King’s College London, the free exhibition includes stunning visualisation and 3D-printing of heart models by artist Salomé Bazin and Dr Pablo Lamata from the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine. 🦠 Here’s one disease-carrying parasite that’s been given a (useful!) makeover. . Toxoplasma gondii (seen in the background) has been overlaid with a map showing the areas of interest picked out by HRMAn, a new AI-based platform developed by Crick and UCL scientists. . HRMAn can analyse thousands of pictures of infected cells and uses deep neural networks to analyse patterns in the cell images. It gives detailed information about the location and number of the parasites, as well as how the parasites interact with the cells. . 📰 Find the full story at http://crick.ac.uk/news . #science#research#sciencenews#biology#biomedical#artificialintelligence#ai#lifesciences#stem#sciart#fluorescence

Today it's the International Day of Women & Girls in Science! At the Crick, female scientists, researchers and technicians are working at every level, pushing forward the boundaries of science. . Pictured here is Raffa Carzaniga, our Deputy Head of Electron Microscopy, who has worked with electron microscopes for decades. She's responsible for making this powerful technology available to all of the Crick's scientists and keeping it running at its best. . She says, “Knowing the technology’s potential, we can guide researchers to get the best from it. We do more than provide biomedical imaging knowledge – we become an integral part of their work.” . Our new exhibition opening in the Crick next month reveals a glimpse of the work of our specialist technicians, with insights into their extraordinary work. . A whole new view of the pancreas! A group of Crick scientists have developed a new imaging technique and answered a decades-old question about the formation of pancreatic tumours. . Looking at the pancreas in 3D meant that the scientists could identify two different kinds of tumours: ‘exophytic’ tumours which grow outwards from the pancreas and ‘endophytic’ tumours which grow inwards. . The work was done by a team of labs at the Crick, working across biology and physics. Check http://crick.ac.uk/news for the full story. . #science#sciencenews#biology#cancer#lifesciences

A group of labs at the Crick have teamed up to create a brand new imaging technique and take a closer look at the formation of pancreatic tumours. . Scientists are now able to look at the pancreas in 3D and see how individual cells arrange themselves into tumours. They found that tumours either grow into the pancreas (like this one, shown in red) or outwards away from the organ. Every bit of knowledge about how cancers grow and develop could contribute towards eventual treatments. . This picture was taken on a confocal microscope by Hendrik Messal in our Adult Stem Cell Laboratory. Find the full story at http://crick.ac.uk/news . #science#sciencenews#biology#cancer#lifesciences
