#prenatalyoga after 30 weeks : let's get ready to meet the little love ! It's the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy, or so — Sugar pie baby will choose her time and place so who knows ? Now my yoga practice evolves again and is very different especially since Sugar pie has already turned into head down position to get ready for the big day. We wouldn't want her to turn back to breech or to start the descent too early. No more : - downward dog (more useful to try to turn a breech baby), no inversion of any kind and no garland poses or very low squats (those when the knees are higher than the level of the hips) to avoid encouraging the baby to go further down before her due date — I'll make sure to use this in the very last days, it worked very well for mischief in chief's birth. More : - Child's pose to stretch my back and align my spine, modified cat-cow to relax my back and broad uterine ligaments (I'll show you this variation later), general upper/lower back exercises, pelvic floor stretch and tone postures, psoas stretch to avoid any counteraction of my very tonic psoas during the descent of the baby prior to the D-day and/or during labor. This part also worked quite well the first time around. Video : arms movements for upper/lower back stretch and to tone the core It doesn't look like much but this arms movements exercise helps open the chest, relax upper / lower back and gently puts the core to work. Releasing tensions from the lower back also helps to keep sciatica away. The back must remain straight, here I put my hands on the couch, you could use a chair or yoga blocks as long as your back is straight and you feel comfortable. Start the arm lifting movement with a deep inhale (engages the core oh so gently), turn your head to follow the movement and bring your arm back down while you exhale fully, then repeat on the other side. You could do this exercise 8 times as a start, then 10. Aprender e dividir conhecimento é algo que carrego comigo há anos. A didática é minha natureza e sempre me orgulhei em me apresentar como professora. Dar aula é estar em evolução constante, pois sempre há algo novo a aprender. É tirar do seu tempo e dedicá-lo aos outros. Sou muito grata a todos os mestres que iluminaram meu caminho e me inspiraram a fazer o mesmo. Me reverencio a todos nós professores que, de alguma forma, fazemos a diferença na vida de alguém! After just short of a month in a foreign land without meat, sugar, alcohol, barista coffee, dairy and interactions with social media and the outside world, 5:30am starts and 8:30pm finishes I am officially certified as a yoga instructor 🙏 After many tears and laughs, hugs and songs, asanas and dances, I have caught my breath. I have rediscovered Ciara. I have a new found family 🥰 I want to thank my truly amazing @shivakaliyoga trainers: @dear_future@animalalchemy@mileenarain@sergebandura for creating such a safe and loving space for me to breathe, process, move and transform. Thank you for encouraging self expression and individuality. I'm not sure when I started becoming who I've been becoming. I suppose it seems
I'm not sure when I started becoming who I've been becoming. I suppose it seems to have started 10 years ago, but surely there have been many pivotal moments that have illuminated my path. 🙏 • Maybe it was being born into a family that was full of broken people. The controlling nature of my over-protected / high-expectation upbringing. Or it could be the trauma of the religion that was forced on me as a child. Being raised by a woman who was raised by a woman who was raised by a woman who was broken. Possibly having an autistic sister had something to do with it. Or being raped at 15. Maybe it was my first abortion. Or the dramatically painful divorce of my parents. Or having my Dad go from best friend to stranger. Having multiple physically & emotionally abusive partners. Battling anxiety & the depths of depression. Self-Harming & Disprdered Eating. Living on the verge of broke & homeless. Eating from the food drive. Going through bankruptcy. Hitting so many different types of rock bottom. 🙏 • It's difficult to determine because at one point all of those things were the cause of my suffering and motivation for my self-destruction & self-loathing. And yet somehow, as if right before my eyes, they have been transformed into the biggest & most transformational experiences of my life. The parts of my journey that I am most grateful for & wouldn't trade for the world. I had so many reasons to continue to be the victim of my story. Sometimes I'm not sure how I made it out of that mindset, but I practice gratitude daily now. 🙏 • You see - life doesn't happen TO us. It happens FOR us. I don't have a perfect life - newsflash there is no such thing - but I am no longer a prisoner of my past or a victim of my circumstances anymore. I am finally free and I have committed my life to helping others to find this same freedom for themselves. 🙏 • If you find yourself stuck in a dark place right now, know that it isn't somewhere you have to stay. Believe it or not, you have everything you'll ever need inside of you right now. You may just need a little help to find your buried treasure. Don't lose hope, keep digging my friend.

When I teach this, the key for me is in the feet: 1) Press the inner front foot into the ground. 2) Root the back heel into the ground. Maintaining that connection and the front palm to the ground (or block), lift and rotate the back leg's outer hip. _______ . @jameskiernanyoga writes: This twist has taught me so much. It has opened my resistant hamstrings, taught my legs how to provide a stable base. Because of the interconnectedness of the body it has shown me how this twist starts from my back heel and then runs all the way through the crown. Moving toward a more functional perspective, I've found a lot of challenge in supporting my posture without the bottom arm, and finding the strength through my core, rather than leverage, to rotate the spine deeply.

Every time you take a vinyasa or do a sun salutation, you need to choose whether you’re going for a Cobra or UpDog and stick to it. UpDog is a challenging posture and not suitable at the start of most people’s practice. The disastrous hybrid I’m demonstrating in the 4th picture (I couldn’t get out of there fast enough!) is what happens all too often if a student hasn’t had sufficient basic training or individual attention early in their practice and it’s bad bad news for necks, backs and shoulders with none of the wonderful benefits of a properly executed Cobra or UpDog. . Over the coming practice posts I’ll break down each picture and explain how to best find a comfortable, safe and effective alignment that allows benefits such as: - Reversal of our modern, hunched over / head forward posture to return the body to balance - Improved mobility of the spine - Improved breath capacity - Elevated mood and reduction of depression - Energising and stimulating effect on the nervous system - Strengthening of upper back, quads and glutes . In the meantime, if in doubt, stick with a baby Cobra and see if you can hover your hands away from the mat - the work comes from lifting with the upper back muscles, NOT shoving yourself up with your arms! 🙏

Today was an awful day. Yes, the mindfulness, yoga teacher had a straight up ver
Today was an awful day. Yes, the mindfulness, yoga teacher had a straight up very bad day. Driving to my tween yoga class @riverflow with tears streaming down my face kind of bad day. ⁣ ⁣ As we arrived on our mats, I explained to the #yogis that I had a crap day. That through my day, I longed to come to yoga mat. I shared how on the mat…that simple yet profound rectangle yoga mat, is where yogi’s come to leave it all. Where we come to feel, to breathe, to connect...to release what we no longer need. I explained that often, in adult yoga classes people release so completely that they will sweat and cry, that one of our yogi’s who was congested might need to grab tissues, because the power of yoga allows EVERYTHING to release. ⁣ ⁣ I then suggested to the yogi’s that today they were the #yogateacher. That they would lead their tribe.⁣ ⁣ And so they did.⁣ ⁣ Warm up looked a bit like a peak pose 😳but we did it, and we laughed 🤣and fell and supported and tried again. And then one of my hang on every word yogi’s lead us to #pigeonpose.⁣ ⁣ And then.⁣ ⁣ She.⁣ ⁣ Released.⁣ ⁣ She fell to her mat, and let.it.all.go😭⁣ ⁣ All the feelings. All the emotions.⁣ ⁣ You see her father leaves for his first deployment in December. 🇺🇸And she holds it in and her mom is so hopeful that she will use yoga as her tool to release. And today she did.⁣ ⁣ And today her tribe of yogi’s sent their loving eyes 😍and words and concerned arms and thoughts her way. She wasn’t ready to talk about it or to share it. But today she released it. And we all were there to hold space for her. To hold her and to love her through.💞⁣ ⁣ She felt. She released. There’s no right parenting formula out there. There are no “do these steps” and you’ll get “x” result. The older my teen gets, the conversations get harder. I may say or do too much or not enough. What I did in the past no longer applies. And, that could even mean yesterday, lol! 🤣 We are in constant motion, changing by the minute. But the thing that always keeps our bond strong is our faith - in ourselves to keep doing the right thing even when it’s hard and that magnificence that runs through our soul which is beyond the sum of us both. Our relationship requires a constant tuning in to what each of us is teaching the other. We must deeply listen to the other, including what they may not be saying (but showing), have hard conversations, and deep reflections. I’m grateful for his presence shedding light on my shadows and helping me shine more in our brilliance. Aproveito esse dia pra convidá-los a ampliar um pouco nossa visão. E se começarmos a olhar para todas as situações e pessoas que passam em nossa vida como professores? Tudo e todos tem algo a nos ensinar, cada um com suas particularidades... Então o universo vai colocando cada ser e cada acontecimento estrategicamente pensado para aquele momento específico que estamos passando pra ampliar nossa consciência acerca de nós mesmo. E não estou só falando desse aprendizado gostoso e amoroso que essa frase sugere não. Eu costumo falar pra agradecermos todas as pessoas que passam por nós, pois cada uma vem nos ensinar algo, ainda que seja que nos não queremos ser como aquela pessoa. É claro que possível aprender pelo amor, mas infelizmente nós ainda estamos escolhendo caminhos que nos levam a aprender pela dor. Ainda assim acredito que o Amor é chave, através dele podemos elevar tudo, transmutar o que julgamos como negativo, acolher o que ressoa com nossa essência. Our ego is a mechanism that allows us to identify as separate from others and prompts us to protect ourselves. In survival situations the ego is great - it tells us to protect ourselves from danger. But when we are not in danger it doesn’t serve us so well. Change makes us feel uncomfortable and the ego comes in and tells us to protect ourselves - “hold up let’s not go there” but “there” is often where the growth, expansion and development happens. One of my favorite things about Asana practice is that we learn to breath through discomfort and recognise the ego. So when we are in the world about to have a hard conversation, or ask someone out, or apply for the job or whatever the scary thing is and the ego steps in stopping us from taking a risk we can breath through it and jump anyhow. Union in all, all in Union 🌀 I like to have a flow mindset when I stretch for some days I feel like a yogi god and do a deep, slow, long routine and sometimes I feel like a quick stretch in the morning before a busy day of work 😂 Either way its a good choice to get the body moving in any way possible to optimize ya day 🌞🧘🏽‍♂️
