Okay so yesterday we addressed single-use plastics and identified a few ways that these plastics can be harmful to ourselves and to the planet 🌏 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today we want to get more specific, and are hoping to encourage you to ditch #singleuseplastic bags for reusable ones in celebration of #gwmindfulmarch! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you know that over 500 BILLION single-use plastic bags are used by shoppers in a single year? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Most of these end up in landfill or our precious oceans, and it can take over 500 years for each bag to fully break down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over 100,000 marine animals are killed due to single-use plastic bags each year, not including the 1 million sea birds that also die due to plastic-related causes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here is the kicker too... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We often feel like if we just recycle it, it’s not so bad. Unfortunately it costs over $5,600 AUD to recycle 1 tonne of plastic bags, that is sold for $45 on the commodities market. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No good, my friends. This is not sustainable! 🚫 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Luckily, there are some awesome small businesses doing awesome things, who offer entire low-waste shopping sets to make your life super easy (our fave is @seedandsproutco). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even easier than that though, is making reusable bags out of old pillowcases, or dragging out that tote bag your mum gave you 3 years ago. You can also find reusable bags at your local grocery chain stores, or super cute ones are available at stores like @biomestores and @floraandfaunaau! 🌱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thick handled, ones that fold up into little pouches, knitted bags, hand-dyes, linen, cotton, bags that spread powerful messages. One of the best things I started doing since last year for my mental health is having hiking trips to myself. This has further aided my interest in mindfulness and having a good general wellbeing. I love to socialise, meet up with friends, try new things and have a laugh. But what I also very much enjoy is having some quiet time to myself. There's nothing more I like doing than to pack my hiking gear and set off to a new place to explore, or revisit places I love. Just having some time out in nature, switching off from social media and silencing my phone, really does make a difference. I always meet some amazing hikers along the way, which adds to creating new memories and adventures. I think it's important to talk about different ways to positively help our mental health. Whenever I return back to London I always feel refreshed and more centred. And I think this has hugely helped in being in a better place with my grief. So I would definitely encourage the idea to try hiking for some peace and quiet. And it's a good way to keep fit too! 💛 #Mindfulness#Wellbeing
