The view from the hotel. On one of these “water roads” -as our local guide calls it- lovers meet at night. At around 8pm the man arrives in his boat and the woman in hers. He then serenades her. ‘You raise me up’ is currently one of the popular choices of song (he gave us a sample). If all goes well then all goes well. I’m told it can cause quite a traffic jam depending on the time of year. #onthelake#ganvié#wheninbenin#travel#benin#veniceofafrica

(SWIPE) People call Ganvié, Benin the “Venice of Africa.” It’s a magical village built on water due to a community of locals who were trying to outrun colonizers and when they realized that the Europeans couldn’t swim, they took to water to escape them. Eventually they set up a whole life on water - restaurants, stores, markets, salons, schools, police stations, taxis - everything you can think of is there, on water. How resilient? How beautiful?! Definitely a highlight of the #HeritageJourney trip 😍 (click the link in our bio to watch Part 2 of #HeritageJourney: Benin)

The lake city of Ganvié is one of the main tourist attractions of Benin. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, this city is entirely built on water. Baptized “Venice of Africa”, Ganvié is the great lake city of Benin. Fully built on stilts, it is located on Lake Nokoué in the north of the Cotonou metropolis. The main commitment of the destination for sustainable and responsible tourism is based on the importance given by the government to the destination by initiating the project of development of the cities of Grand Nokoué which aims at the modernization of the neighboring towns of Ganvié. This commitment is mainly based on the development of reception infrastructures, shops and houses on stilts which constitute a singular characteristic of the lake city of Ganvié. This commitment is finally based on the conservation and promotion of ecological and cultural values on the destination. • • • • • All our Sustainable Top 100 Destinations are featured in our website www.sustainabletop100.org #GD#IIAE#greendestinations#sustainabletop100#viami#viaviami#instituteforanimalethics#office#intern#ganvié#ganvie#benin#africa#veniceofafrica#lakecity#lakenokoué#lakenokoue#lake#unescotentativelist#unesco#protectnaturesbeauty#protectculture#cityonstilts#developmentprojects#commitment#sustainability#commitmenttosustainability#gettingsustainable

Had an amazing experience today visiting the town of Ganvie, or as it was described to me “The Venice of Africa” (lol), a village of 20000 or so. The people live on the water and it’s thought to be the largest lake village in Africa. I’ve seen some different things in my time but this is up there with one of the most unique. #ganvie#ganvié#lakenokoue#nokoue#veniceofafrica#benin#cotonou#waterpeople#boat#sunday#venice

🌍 Country: Benin 🇧🇯 Capital: Porto Novo Language: French (official), Fon and Yoruba (most common vernaculars in south), tribal languages (at least six major ones in north) Photos: @unseenbenin . Ganvié, known as the Venice of Africa, is a town located on the lower Southern part of Benin and is built on the Lake Nokoué.  The name “Ganvié” comes from the #Fon language and it literally means “We’ve survived”. It has about 20,000 habitants in approximately 3,000 homes on stilts. Ganvié came into existence during the Portuguese invasion looking for slaves.  Those living in nearby #Cotonou fled and built Ganvié. The Fon religious beliefs taught that it was forbidden for any raiders to approach anyone living near water (or at the very least maybe the raiders couldn’t swim), therefore it was a perfect escape for this group of Beninese people. It was their safe community on water. . . . . . #benin#bightofbenin#africa#lakenokoue#veniceofafrica#unesco#worldheritagesite#ganvie#world#factbook#travel#geography#tourism#earthporn#wanderlust#wander#worldcitizen#tourist#worldfacts#earthpix#explore#picoftheday#pictureoftheday

Two years ago I stood on a bridge in Nigeria overlooking Makoko and remember thinking to myself...wow the stories that place must hold. A sub-culture of 300,000+ people living on stilts above the water, self-governed in ways by unspoken rules and local chiefs. Well a couple days ago I finally made my way in there and it was eye-opening to say the least. Here’s a glimpse of life on the water from our bts cam. I can’t wait to share this story from our time there. #makoko#stories#natgeotravel#veniceofafrica#girlseducation#dji#reddigitalcinema#onlytoday

Ganvie village in Benin is called the Venice of Africa. It is a lake village lying in Lake Nokoue, near Cotonou. With a population of around 20,000 people, it is probably the largest lake village in Africa. The village was created in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries by the Tofinu people, established on the lake for the Tofinu to avoid Fon warriors capturing slaves for sale to European traders, making the shallow waters and islands of Lake Nokoue a haven. #benin#westafrica#africa#african#travel#travelphotography#ganvie#cotonou#veniceofafrica

Finally finalized our partnership for Makoko Art School kicking off early next year by the grace of God. I met with our partner who is the son of the late Chief of Makoko Slum that ruled the community for 36 years. Noah is an inspiring young man who is passionate about education and touching the lives of children and youth in the slum. I was amazed at his simplicity, humility and the reception on the proposed creative engagement for over 250 students. Beyond partnership we became good friends after sharing our life's stories. We inspired each other and look forward to a bright future for the kids in the slum. #Makoko#VeniceOfAfrica#WorldsbiggestfloatingSlum#MakokoArtsSchool#RaisingStarsFromTheSlum#TenderArtsNigeria#SweetPartnership#2017BeginsNow
