Before coming to India we went to the beach in Costa Rica. Today we are in Rishikesh. It’s cold and raining. Yoga says we must find equanimity and we’ll find freedom. Equanimity is not something you can just achieve by repressing your discomfort, because of the weather for instance. Equanimity is just the result of a long journey of practice with discipline of all which develops the qualities of light in us (Abhyasa) and the non attachment to the sense’s pleasures and stimulations or to the results of our actions (Vairagya). Gracias bellas x confiar y ponerle todas las ganas. . 🤸Ashtanga es un método de yoga intenso físicamente, la respiración es el hilo que conduce toda la práctica y que va uniendo las diferentes posturas de la serie. Entre la respiración y las posturas la sangre se calienta, fluye mejor y nos hace transpirar para así poder eliminar todas las toxinas... . Más allá de que es una práctica intensa físicamente todes pueden practicar, ya que cada persona va aprendiendo a su ritmo. . 🧘Inhalo y exhalo...no hay nada más! . Esta semana quiero hablar de la práctica, de la constancia, del desapego, y de la imperfección. Patanjali nos asegura que la única manera de obtener el cese de las fluctuaciones de la mente (Samadhi) es practicar mucho tiempo y desapegarnos de los resultados. Seguro que si practicas yoga, sabrás que no todos los días son iguales, ni todas las prácticas. Que un día todo fluye y al siguiente todo parece estancado. Hoy has estado haciendo Vrksasana mientras hablabas por teléfono y tendías la ropa y mañana seguramente no consigas levantar el pie del suelo sin que te caigas... O llevas mucho tiempo queriendo hacer una postura súper difícil sobre los brazos, y estás día tras día intentando realizarla sin éxito. Y así ya llevas meses o puede que años. O bien tras años de intentonas, por fin, consigues sostenerte sobre tus manos... En cada caso, ¿qué sensación tienes? Si has conseguido la postura, ¿has triunfado? Y si no la has conseguido , ¿has fracasado? Yo no sé tú, pero a mi me pasa eso. El otro día me pasó con una versión de urdhva dhanurasana, tras mucha práctica, por fin me salió. Pero ese mismo día, también volví a intentar Adho Mukha Vrksasana sin apoyos y no lo conseguí... Y me sentí mal por ello. Todo eso forma parte del apego. Si fracaso, me siento mal; si triunfo, me siento bien. Todo va a depender no de mi trabajo, sino de mis resultados. En las redes sociales solemos exponer lo que nos sale bien, lo que hemos conseguido, donde hemos triunfado. Solemos ocultar la práctica, el trabajo y los fracasos. Todo ha de ser bonito, maravilloso. Pero es que eso no es yoga. Yoga no es triunfar o fracasar. Yoga es práctica y desapego de los resultados. Así que esta semana me apetece compartir con vosotros las posturas previas que suelo realizar para ver si ese día puedo hacer alguna postura cumbre. Me apetece compartir el trabajo que lleva conseguir la postura a la que quiero acceder. Porque también eso es yoga: equivocarse y fracasar, sin importar cuál va a ser el resultado, solo ser constantes en la práctica.

First individual crossfit competition #thailandthrowdown2019 done and so many achievements 😁 I hit all my individual targets for each workout, PR'd my snatch from 40kg to 45kg, did 22 kipping pull ups (the most pull ups I have ever done), stuck to my strategies & most importantly had fun ❤️ . . Personal growth can be hard to recognise sometimes & it is the small things that really do matter. Had I competed last year & finished 14th I would have had many an excuse as to why I did so poorly instead of celebrating all the amazing things my body did do. . . Of course there were moments of 'I am not as good as I thought' so instead of allowing the ego to build my self-doubt, get angry & have a cry I acknowledged its appearance & thought of 2 achievements to challenge it, took a breath & appreciated the moment. 35/365! Baddha Konasana in the Yin Throw. I just finished the Yin + Reiki class at UE and part of the process that I kept resonating with was release, non-attachment practice. I say it every time I post this pose because it is so remarkable: to realize the full expression of this pose, with the legs fully pressed against the ground and the body flat to the floor, you have to use one set of muscles to get into the pose then release those muscles to use a different set to open to the fullness of the pose. I often here people on challenging reality shows explain that they are overachievers and always want to be the best and that confuses me because when I think of those who are the best at what they do over-achievement would have failed them as a strategy for success. Today, during my reiki healing during class, which was gracefully done by @co5mosis, an incredible reiki master, the message she received for me was “personal freedom and expression. Let go a little. Trust more”. I was frustrated to receive this message because I feel like I’ve been on the “you’re going to let go and find faith if that’s the last thing you do” cosmic railroad since last May, but the funny thing is that I can’t excel at letting go, I either have or I haven’t and I *still haven’t. I’m the person struggling to hit the split or the baddha konasana or the vertical dancer’s pose who is unwilling to release the muscles that got me to the set up and to engage the muscles that enable even more space within the poses. What will it take for me to let go? From the archives, with @tarang_naique_photography 📸 . I’ve written about Vairagya Bhava in yoga before. It is the attitude (Bhava) of surrendering, to gravity, to the Universe, to our intuition, and knowing that everything will be ok. While forward bends are all about the Vairagya Bhava, backbends are all about the Aishwaraya Bhava, or the attitude of self-reliance. Anyone who has attempted backbends knows that they are scary. It is not the natural position of the spine or head. Just as bending forward and backward are exact opposites, so are the two Bhavas associated with them. There is no surrender in backbend. It requires taking control. It is not trusting anything outside of you but trusting yourself. It does not make you feel humble, it makes you feel powerful and accomplished. And just like everything else in yoga, the aim with Bhavas is to find the right balance; to know when to surrender, and when to take control. Too much vairagya can lead to escapism, and too much aishwarya to arrogance. Surrender to every situation in life and soon you’ll feel like a victim. Try to take too much control and you’ll be angry when things don’t go your way. Yoga extends way beyond the mat and into every aspect of living. A radical approach to inner peace: do nothing. • I always had a strong compulsion to DO SOMETHING. Work more. Study more. Practice more. Not doing something was not being productive. Not being busy was being lazy. • Especially when confronted with stress, I would do anything to avoid dealing with discomfort. Procrastinate. Binge. Lash out. Running away from the difficult feelings was the only thing I knew how to do. • The harsh reality of my declining physical & mental health eventually forced me to slow down and reevaluate my relationship with “doing”. Yoga and meditation taught me how to take a different approach. • Now when I feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable, I hit pause. I sit my ass down, I take a few deep breaths and I do nothing. Instead of running way, I stay with myself. Instead of resisting, I allow feelings to come and go in their own time. Instead of judging, I invite curiosity. • Doing nothing liberates me from my unconscious habits. Detachment or Vairagya applies to a normal household and working life as much and is not just limited to jungles or Himalayas. It has three parts that need to be mentioned. Loss or failure. Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu both teach their followers how to deal with losses in life, because losses are also reality, and will happen. Not everything one starts will meet the desired result. Students don't score as well in tests as they want, financial investments fail, friends and relations get busy when one needs them, death of course if the final and the only unavoidable truth. Even when things don't go well, one has to keep going. If one knows how to move on, they end up doing the next big thing. Those who don't, are devastated and loose a lot of time over losses. Vairagya or detachment teaches how not to get emotionally involved in every small thing. Through analysing our current mental state, we can control it. These 5 modifications are: 1. RIGHT KNOWLEDGE: That is mind working on the basis of right kind of knowledge, which is gained through direct interference, free from biased mind. Through reading with open mind and listening to the words of saints and holy people. 2. WRONG KNOWLEDGE: Emotions, doubts and ignorance generate from wrong knowledge. 3. IMAGINATION: It depends on pre-conceived notions, away from reality. 4. SLEEP: It is a mental modification, whose corresponding reality is feeling impulse of Non-Existance. 5. I have learned that an advanced practitioner of yoga is not so worried about how physically challenging or impressive a pose is, an advanced practitioner does not force or push, an advanced practitioner is not so concerned with how open their shoulders, spine, or hips are - an advanced practitioner of yoga has their mind hooked on one thing - God (or whatever word you want to use: the Beloved, the Universe, the Untouched Self, etc.) If not God in that moment, then the prayer. The pose can be challenging, easy, fun, boring, whatever. The pose is the pose but the focus stays the same. The skin is soft, the breath is easy, and the eyes are at ease. An old friend of mine used to describe people by their eyes. I’d ask her what someone looked like and she’d say “oh he had a blue shirt, brown hair, and kind eyes”. Kind eyes. That stuck with me. Be the person in the room with the kindest eyes. The eyes that radiate love and peace. The eyes that gaze only at the prayer; at the Beloved. Be that person. That’s advanced. Kindness. Love. Peace. Om.

My house looked like a carefully constructed marriage, home and career - which was, in fact, held together by the duct tape of my unwillingness to let go. • At the time, it felt like I was drop-kicked into a new reality, but the shift was a long time coming. I was deeply unhappy and desperately clinging to a life I signed up for. I thought my only choice was to MAKE IT ALL WORK SO HELP ME GOD. • Looking back, I don’t blame anyone. I don’t regret anything. Could I have made different choices? Sure. Would things have turned out better? Who knows. I’m not that interested in a hypothetical future based on a hypothetical past. I do know my life turned out this unbelievable and miraculous way. I don’t wish my past had been anything else than what it was. • I became who I am today because I struggle, I endure, I let go and grow. I continuously realize my true self because walking through the fire of suffering & surrendering burns away the misperceptions of who I think I “should" be. • We are all finding our own way in our own time. Sometimes, I get all caught up in what I can’t control, which is basically every
Sometimes, I get all caught up in what I can’t control, which is basically everything. We all know the wisdom - the only thing you can control is how you react to all that you can’t. But I forget that. All. The. Time. I start to worry, “What if this happens? What is he thinking? What is she going to do? How is this shit gonna go down?” A wise mentor told me early on that worrying is useless - most of what you worry about never comes to pass, and if something actually does happen, worrying does no good anyway - it won’t stop anything from coming. Buddhists say pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional, likening the “what you can’t control” and your reaction to it as two arrows: you can’t escape the first arrow of pain, but you can avoid the second arrow by how you respond. I feel like worrying ahead of the pain is almost like another, preemptive arrow to deal with. Lordy. Worrying is my default, and when I’m feeling tired, sick, off-centered, not grounded, it wreaks havoc in my head, in my heart, and in my life. I have a few antidotes. One is getting on top of my home - tidying, creating a sense of order, getting the bills paid, doing the laundry. I also try to get outside - hiking with the pup, walking at the beach, curling up and reading in the yard. And I snuggle my people. Hard. There’s also a section of the yoga sutra that helps a lot - the part that teaches the complimentary practices of Abhyasa and Vairagya. It’s the idea of working steadily, with focused effort, but releasing any attachment to the result. As in, I will kick ass at work and take care of the people I work with, but actively let go of any worry about what is said about me or my work in a meeting I’m not invited to. As in, I will raise my kids as well as I can, supporting and loving who they are, but leaving it to them to find their own path. As in, I will work to make things better in my community, I will donate to causes that matter, and I will raise my voice against injustice, but I won’t ride the anxiety roller coaster of every deranged tweet. It’s a practice, not a perfect. And we all fall off the wagon. I’m just a girl trying to get my head back on straight. Like, on the daily.

Consciente de sua vulnerabilidade, o ego tenta, por todos os meios, proteger-se e fortalecer-se, experimentando aversão a tudo o que ameaça e atrai tudo o que o sustenta. ⠀ A partir desses impulsos de atração e repulsão surgem inúmeras emoções conflitantes. ⠀ Na verdade, não somos esse ego, não somos essa raiva, não somos esse desespero. ⠀ Nosso nível mais fundamental de experiência é o da consciência pura, essa primeira qualidade de consciência, que é o fundamento de toda experiência, emoção, raciocínio, conceito e construção mental. Have you ever caught yourself being in just an absolute piss mood? For no reason
Have you ever caught yourself being in just an absolute piss mood? For no reason? Or maybe there's a reason, but not a good enough one to keep you in this headspace for longer than 10 seconds. And you get caught in this whirlwind of negative thoughts? Thoughts about yourself, thoughts about others. Now have you ever stopped to ask yourself why? What's the point? How are these thoughts going to benefit me or anyone else in any way whatsoever? They say there's no sense in crying over spilled milk. And oh Boy George were they ever right on the nose. I mean sure, maybe you lost a cup of milk. But you can always pour yourself another one. You can always take this opportunity to gain a sense of accomplishment and productivity for cleaning up the mess, and maybe cleaning up the rest of the kitchen while you're at it. Maybe you find something waaay at the back of the cupboard that you thought you had lost long ago. Or maybe you discover some neato little surprise in the broom closet that you never knew existed. I hope it's clear that I'm talking about introspection here. But I mean also if you haven't cleaned your kitchen recently maybe you should take a hot second and go do that. Negative thoughts are going to arise. We are human. But we don't have to let them poison us. Instead, try tracing these crusty thoughts and feels back to the root. Recognize that this root is in the past, and whatever is in the past is no longer. It's nothing. Nothing nothing nothing. So why hold onto something that no longer exists if it only brings you pain? I think from young age I’ve learnt not to get attached to things / to people. I left home at the age of 17 to go to London to study. Each year I would return home and leave my loved ones behind. It was the hardest. Even in London I moved places, met so many people with whom I got very close to. But there is always goodbyes. It’s so easy to get attached to places we live or visit, to the people we meet and love, even our belongings. I remember I got so upset and burst into tears when I lost my necklace that my mum gave when I graduated. So somewhere along the way I’ve started to learn to protect myself by not getting attached too much. I love the people I meet, places I visit but I move on... Here I am sitting on this beautiful beach in #KohSamui truly enjoying everything it has offered and ready to say my goodbye... . This week we’ve been working on backbends with equal focus on opening the front
This week we’ve been working on backbends with equal focus on opening the front body AND engaging the muscles of the back body. This variation of natarajasana (courtesy of @jason_crandell) doesn’t look like much but my right hamstring & glutes are on fire. Containing my belly and front ribs keeps the core engaged. Sweeping my arms locust-style turns on the back muscles. It’s a low range of motion pose that is deceptively challenging and very effective. • What’s been so interesting in working with this dual focus is how the backbends we’ve been exploring - ardha chandra chapasana, natarajasana, kapinjalasana - feel more accessible, balanced and cohesive. I experience it in my own body: a strong back supports an open heart ♥️ • I sincerely believe that the true benefit of the asana practice is how it informs the way we LIVE. To give freely, to be vulnerable, to love unconditionally - requires strength and personal integrity. At the end of the day, there is no separation between “on the mat” and “off the mat”.
