The Destiny module, also known as the US Lab, is the primary operating facility
The Destiny module, also known as the US Lab, is the primary operating facility for U.S. research payloads aboard the International Space Station (ISS). It was berthed to the Unity module and activated over a period of five days in February, 2001. Destiny is NASA's first permanent operating orbital research station since Skylab was vacated in February 1974. Astronauts work inside the pressurized facility to conduct research in numerous scientific fields. Scientists throughout the world will use the results to enhance their studies in medicine, engineering, biotechnology, physics, materials science, and Earth science. Destiny was launched to ISS aboard the Space Shuttle mission STS-98. It launched into Earth orbit on February 7, 2001 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. On February 10, 2001 Destiny was attached to ISS with the Shuttle SRMSS (CanadaArm). Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 (PMA 2) was attached where Destiny would be, and PMA-2 was moved from Unity node to a temporary position on the truss. Destiny was berthed to that hatch on Unity, while PMA-2 was moved to the forward hatch of the Z1 truss; after that it was moved to the forward hatch of Destiny during that mission. Several years later, on November 14, 2007, Harmony module was attached to the forward end of the Destiny laboratory. Destiny arrived at the station pre-configured with five racks housing electrical and life support systems that provide electrical power, cooling water, air revitalization, and temperature and humidity control. Seven additional racks were flown to Destiny in the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module by STS-102, and ten more were delivered on subsequent missions. The laboratory has a total of 24 racks inside the laboratory, six on each side. The nadir window is formally known as the U.S. Laboratory Science Window, has the "...highest quality optics ever flown on a human occupied spacecraft...", according to NASA, and can support taking Earth observations/images. In 2010 a research facility was brought to the station, called WORF, and the first photo with it was taken in January 2011.

Lincoln woke up so excited this morning and told me he had the best dream ever... and when i asked him what, he said "I dreamt i went in a space rocket to the moon and there was no gravity and i was floating all around".... haha so im going to take that as a win on the bedroom front! Plus as soon as he got home from school today he went straight to hang out in his room and is currently watching pokemon on his bed... I can say that we achieved our goals with Lincolns room... all i really wanted was to make their bedrooms feel like their own... a place to go and hang out, play with their toys, read their books or just watch a movie. I felt like they had this space in there that they never used... and would just bring their toys out to the lounge instead so i wanted to bring more of their own personalities and character into their rooms. Lincoln always tells us he wants to be an astronaut and work for NASA one day lol so he picked his own theme.... but im still not sure what the plan is for Addies makeover this weekend.....!! #space#spacekid#spaceman#outerspace#astronaut#NASA#nasakid#dreams#solarsystem#spacestation#moonlanding#stars#reachforthestars#childhooddreams#bedroom#bedroomdecor#kidsroom#design#blue#kidsbedroom#kidsdecor#bedroomtheme#interiordesign#interiordecor#neilarmstrong#neilarmstrongmini

Zvezda (meaning "star"), also known as the Zvezda Service Module, is a component
Zvezda (meaning "star"), also known as the Zvezda Service Module, is a component of the International Space Station (ISS). It was the third module launched to the station, and provides all of the station's life support systems, some of which are supplemented in the USOS, as well as living quarters for two crew members. It is the structural and functional center of the Russian portion of the station - the Russian Orbital Segment. The module was manufactured by RKK Energia, with major sub-contracting work by GKNPTs Khrunichev. Zvezda was launched on a Proton rocket on July 12, 2000 and docked with the Zarya module on July 26. Zvezda also contains the Elektron system that electrolyzes condensed humidity and waste water to provide hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is expelled into space and the oxygen is used for breathing air. The condensed water and the waste water can be used for drinking in an emergency, but ordinarily fresh water from Earth is used. There are 16 small thrusters and two large S5.79 thrusters for propulsion. The oxidizer used for the propulsion system is dinitrogen tetroxide and the fuel is UDMH, the supply tanks being pressurised with nitrogen. It also contains the Vozdukh, a system which removes carbon dioxide from the air based on the use of regenerable absorbers of carbon dioxide gas. Zvezda has been criticized for being excessively noisy and the crew has been observed wearing earplugs inside it. Zvezda contains the ESA's Digital Management System, a computer that controls ISS. On July 26, 2000, Zvezda became the third component of the ISS when it docked at the aft port of Zarya. (U.S. Unity module had already been attached to the Zarya.) Later in July, the computers aboard Zarya handed over ISS commanding functions to computers on Zvezda. ----- #Space#ISS#SpaceStation#Outpost#Station#Deepspace#Journey#Exploration#NASA#Roscosmos#USA#Russia#Japan#Europe#World#Earth#Moon#Mars#Tech#Astrophysics#Astronaut#Cosmonaut#Spacecraft#Satellite . #Rocketry_ISS

Repost from @explorenasa.@NASA Astronaut Randy "Komrade" Bresnik captured this stunning video from the International Space Station and posted to his social accounts Sept. 23 saying, "#Science is beautiful! The aurora is an incredible light show caused by collisions between gaseous particles with charged particles." Variations in color are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common aurora color which is green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Happy #spacesaturday folks! SpaceX’s latest 2018 variation on the concept has departed from the 2017 vehicle
SpaceX’s latest 2018 variation on the concept has departed from the 2017 vehicle’s design, with the majority of those changes centering around the upper-stage spaceship, known as BFS. Those changes can generally be sorted into three main categories: new wings and fins, new operational strategies for spaceship landings, and new a Raptor engine layout. The most immediately visible difference between the spaceships of 2017 and 2018 can be found with both crafts’ aerodynamic surfaces and control implements. BFR (2018) now features three distinct fins in a tripod configuration, although Musk stated that the tail fin was scarcely a fin at all and essentially present for the sole purpose of being the third landing leg. Perhaps the most unusual feature of these new tripod fins is that the lower pair have been designed to be massive, agile control surfaces necessary for reentry and landing on planets or moons with significant atmospheres. Those three fins will simultaneously act as landing legs and critical control surfaces while operating in an atmosphere. Additionally, BFR (2018) has been updated to include a pair of forward canards that will effectively act as a stand-in for grid fins on the spaceship, whereas the booster will simply have traditional titanium grid fins, judging from an official render of the full rocket. Compared with the delta wing or stubby winglets of 2016 and 2017 variants, BFR (2018) will have far more aerodynamic control authority, improving the versatility and stability of the vehicle during atmospheric reentry, flight, and landing on Mars, Saturnian moon Titan, and – most importantly – Earth. ----- Source : Teslarati ----- #Space#SpaceX#Technology#Tech#Science#BFR#YusakuMaezawa#Japan#Rocket#RocketLaunch#Apollo#Moon#Earth#Artist#News#Fact#Humanity#Astronaut#NASA#ElonMusk#Tesla#Spacestation#Cosmos#astrophysics . #DearMoon . #Rocketry_BFR

The above set of images show the active galaxy Centaurus A, located some 13 million light years away. What makes this galaxy so interesting is the fact that it’s an active galaxy, and it happens to be the closest one to us. The supermassive black hole at the centre of Centaurus A is demonstrating characteristics common to active galactic nuclei. The galaxy shines brightly in other wavelengths of light, such as radio waves, and two large jets of energy have been observed emanating from the Galaxy’s centre. These jets are the result of material falling into the Galaxy’s central black hole. As vast amounts of matter fall into the black hole, friction generated from the rubbing together of all the material generates the large jets we see in the above images. A galaxy may become active through a number of different ways. Interestingly, there are more active galaxies in the early universe than there are today, meaning that most, if not all galaxies, were active in their past. A galaxy may also become active due to the collision or near-collision with another galaxy. The gravitational attraction between such large objects can result in larger amounts of material falling into the black hole, making it active. # ➡️Follow us for more!⬅️ . . via @astrophysics_ . . . #astronomer#astronomia#moon#iss#nightsky#nightscaper#nasa#astronomy#fantastic_universe#spaceshuttle#star#wotn_milkyway#liftoff#ig_astrophotography#spacestation#milkywaycake#super_longexpo#milkywaystars#globe#astro_photography_

STS-74 marked the second docking of the U.S. Space Shuttle to Russian Space Station Mir. The mission's primary payload was the Russian-built Docking Module (DM), designed to become a permanent extension on Mir to afford better clearances for Shuttle-Mir linkups. Unlike the STS-71 crew exchange flight, this second docking focused on delivery of equipment to Mir. Hadfield operated the shuttle's robot arm to lift the DM from the payload bay, rotate it to vertical, and move it to within five inches above the Shuttle Orbital Docking System, which would serve as the passageway between the two spacecraft. Cameron then fired downward steering jets to push Atlantis against the DM. On the next day, Atlantis caught up with and docked with Mir. The second guitar appeared on board the station. NGC 7635: The Bubble Nebula Expanding It's the bubble versus the cloud. NGC 7635, the Bubble Nebula, is being pushed out by the stellar wind of massive star BD+602522, visible in blue toward the right, inside the nebula. Next door, though, lives a giant molecular cloud, visible to the far right in red. At this place in space, an irresistible force meets an immovable object in an interesting way. The cloud is able to contain the expansion of the bubble gas, but gets blasted by the hot radiation from the bubble's central star. The radiation heats up dense regions of the molecular cloud causing it to glow. The Bubble Nebula, pictured here is about 10 light-years across and part of a much larger complex of stars and shells. The Bubble Nebula can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the Queen of Aethiopia (Cassiopeia).
