Now is the Time to Observe Saturn Image credit: @nasa Cassini. Full writeup w’ detailed info and links on the blog at DanSpace77.com. If you’re a fan of the night sky, you’ve been noticing the trio of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars rising one at a time in the East as it’s been quite a treat for the past few months. If you haven’t seen this yet I would urge you to do so because it’s a fantastic view that’s peaking right now. Beauty aside, they’re also a big trio. Mars hits opposition in a few weeks and Jupiter reached opposition back on May 8. Well now it’s Saturn’s turn as its hitting opposition this Wednesday, June 27, 2018 but the exact date and time doesn’t really matter. Saturn reaches opposition every year or 378 days or 54 weeks and this opposition will bring Saturn to 9 AU (AU being 1 Earth/Sun distance or about 93 million miles) from Earth. #NASA#Saturn#SolarSystem

Tonight's moon, telescope view, 70x magnification... Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is one of the world's most well-known pieces of classical music. The name 'Moonlight Sonata' actually came about a few years after Beethoven died. A music critic thought the piece reminded him of the moon's reflection on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. And the name has stuck ever since!

Sputters and spurts on the Sun’s only visible active region eventually unleashed this brief, bright flare on Feb. 7. The flare appears about mid-way through the half-day clip. Normally, we do not pay much attention to flares this small, but it was just about the only real solar activity over the week around Feb. 7 as the Sun is slowing approaching its quiet period of the 11-year solar cycle. These images were taken in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light. Credit: NASA/SDO #nasa#space#solar#flare#sun#spurt#sputter#active#solarsystem#spacecraft#star#mission#observatory#science

Here are 2 images taken 2 years apart. On the left from a week ago and on the right from June 2016. Mars was much higher in the sky, so much less atmospheric garbage to image through and no dust storm to contend with! Although we can get decent images when planets are lower, it requires better than average to excellent seeing to do so! When planets are high in the sky it takes away a major factor in your list of challenges! 5 weeks to Mars opposition! Get your gear ready and your imaging stats down! Find what works for you and grab tons of data! The best way to get a good planet is to capture a bunch of crappy ones! Hiding in there somewhere is a true gem!👍🏻🔭🙌🏻😀. Swirling cloud belts and tumultuous vortices
#Repost@nasa with @get_repost ・・・ Swirling cloud belts and tumultuous vortices within Jupiter’s northern hemisphere are seen in this view from a May flyby of the planet's cloud tops by our Juno spacecraft. Looking closer at this chaotic and turbulent world, we see darker cloud material that is deeper in Jupiter’s atmosphere, while bright cloud material is higher. The bright clouds are most likely ammonia or ammonia and water, mixed with a sprinkling of unknown chemical ingredients. A bright oval at bottom center stands out in the scene. This feature appears uniformly white in ground-based telescope observations. However, with Juno, we can observe the fine-scale structure within this weather system, including additional structures within it. There is not significant motion apparent in the interior of this feature; like the Great Red Spot, its winds probably slows down greatly toward the center. Since 2016 Juno has been penetrating Jupiter’s deep, colorful zones and belts in a quest to answer fundamental questions about the gas giant planet's origin and evolution. Mars is set to be closer to Earth than it has in 15 years with a little cherry on top. The planet will "zig-zag" across the sky as it moves forward and backward over a few weeks although there is no need to be alarmed. Mars will continue on its due orbital course and the zig-zag appearance is due to the Earth spinning faster than Mars' orbit for a time. An example of this would be two cars on the highway with one overtaking the other, making the slower car appear to be moving backwards. #Space_Aus 🛰️

A solar flare that knocks out technology on earth as we know it would cause somewhere between 2 and twenty trillion dollars with humanity expected to take at least a decade to adapt to the lack of tech.
