Maria Sibylla Merian for World Book Day. A German artist and entomologist from the 1600s who is thought to have been the first to discover metamorphosis at a time in history where changing creatures such as frogs and caterpillars were considered to be evil. We’ve been reading an amazing book about her written by Sarah B. Pomeroy for her grandchildren. . . . #mariasibyllamerian#whpsheinspiresme#worldbookday#clayaandlimidressup#goodnightstoriesforrebelgirls#entomologists#strongwomenpast#metamorphosis#sibyllamerian

Today is #WorldBookDay 📚 and also happens to be #WomensHistoryMonth ♀️, so we are combining the two by talking about Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) and her book, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, published in 1705. Merian was one of the first people to study the life cycle of butterflies in detail, including their transformation from caterpillars. She was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly at a time when widespread belief held that insects, moths and butterflies were “born of mud” by spontaneous generation. She was also a gifted artist, having studied under her step-father, the painter Jacob Marrel, so was able to bring a great level of realism to the specimens she studied. Our copy, published in Dutch in 1730, has been later rebound by Horniman himself. This was often done to better protect pages as well as to give a collector's library and more uniform look, meaning it is rare to see older volumes in their original binding. . . . #MariaSibyllaMerian#sibyllamerian#MetamorphosisInsectorumSurinamensium#Library#Books#illustration#scientificillustration#Horniman#hornimanlibrary#frederickhorniman#insectlife#butterflies#moths#lifecycle#ForestHill#bookday#whm

Today is #AuthorsDay and we're really lucky to have a fantastic selection of books in our Library, like this one; 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium' by Maria Sibylla Merian. 🐛🦗🦋🐞 . Merian, who was born in the mid 1600s, was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly, and created these beautifully illustrated plates showing the different stages of insect life cycles. . You can visit our Library on our public open days, during the first Sunday of each month, or the Library is open by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays to researchers. . . . . #illustration#author#naturalist#authorsofinstagram#sibyllamerian#mariasibyllamerian#authorday#library#hornimanlibrary#librarybook#lovelibraries#librariesofinstagram#Horniman#colourillustration#entomology#southlondon

"Era una obsesionada de la metamorfosis de los insectos. Ella quería ser científica, pero era mujer. Y, como era mujer, no se le daba importancia a lo que escribía (...) Para financiar sus libros, vendía sus cuadros. Y recién después de su muerte, los cuadros de esa mujer se convirtieron en material para que estudien los hombres" - *La foto la sacó nuestra escenógrafa hace unas horas en Amsterdam. - Larga vida a las Mariposas! You probably recognise this lovely alpine (or blue) thistle, also called Eryngium planum. It is a species of flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to the area that includes central and southeastern Europe and central Asia. ⠀ ⠀ This drawing was made between 1643 and 1685 by Nicolas Robert (draftsman, 1614-1685). Earlier this drawing was thought to have been made by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).⠀ ⠀ #thistle#bluethistle#blauwedistel#eryngiumplanum#distel#flower#floralprint#botanicalillustration#sibyllamerian#MariaSibyllaMerian#NicolasRobert#teylers#teylersmuseum 🌿
