One of my favourite things about @littleretreatintheforest was the tipi that was built with the intention of bringing awareness to the fact that we are on Treaty One territory. In the spirit of recognition and reconciliation, rather than appropriation, this tipi serves as a reminder that most of us are guests who are living, working, and adventuring on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dene, Dakota and Métis peoples. If we’re not thinking about this when we’re out exploring this beautiful province, listening to Indigenous Peoples when they tell us their truths, and subsequently taking action towards reconciliation, then we’re simply not doing enough.

As many of you who follow followsummer’s adventures, France is perhaps one of our most favourite and most-visited countries. Last year at this time, we explored a part of France that we had never visited before, let alone even considered. Full of enticing, uninhabited beaches, UNESCO rainforests full of gushing waterfalls and lush plant life, ancient mangroves sitting beside vast sugar plantations producing sugar and Rum, and storied history of pirates, explorers, slavery and Napoleon himself. Where in France can you enjoy all of these things? The Caribbean French Antilles archipelago islands of Guadeloupe is a comfortable four-hour flight from either Montreal or New York. And sometimes, particularly in our cold winters, you may need a little bit of French familiarity that Florida or Mexico does not offer. Where in France can you enjoy all of these things? Located in the heart of Grande-Terre island, the town of Morne-à-l'Eau has a cemetery that is exceptional to say the least. Its chequered black and white graves create the impression of a big chessboard. Arranged as an amphitheatre on the side of a small hill, it dazzles visitors with its impressive tombs, some adorned with slanting roofs and terraces. Its uniqueness make it one of the most visited cemeteries of Guadeloupe! The oldest tomb appears to date from 1847, when only the rich could afford such graves. … Looks like a Ford Mercury F600 … maybe 1966? . Did you know Freddie Mercury was born ‘Farrokh Bulsara’, not in Britain, but in the British protectorate of Zanzibar? When he was 17, his family fled to England to escape the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution in which thousands of people were killed. Around the time this truck was rolling off Ford’s assembly line, Mercury was taking Art and Graphic Design in London. He used these skills to design a coat of arms for his band, Queen, which was formed in 1970. The design was meant to impart a sense of British royalty into the band’s identity, and to represent active spirituality. . By the way … huge congratulations to Kirsten and Tayo who had a beautiful private wedding ceremony last month on a small island super close to Zanzibar! Of course I looked it up … Pemba Island is 400 square miles, or about twice the size of your old stomping grounds of Winnipeg! Hey, @tayojacob, how’d you like to produce music for someone like that (or maybe you already have the next ‘Freddie’ on your label)! Also congrats Mrs. Jacob (@theyogagym) for your ‘wildly’ successful African safari yoga retreat! Where to next? Going to be pretty hard to top that! Maybe Ile des Chênes … I’ll make Tayo’s favourite rainbow cake! 🤸‍♂️🌈💿 . . . #bnw#fog#truck#abandoned#tree#rural#exploremb#manitoba#yourshotphotographer#ig_great_shots_canada#splendidcanada#sharecangeo#pocket_canada#canada_photolovers#raw_canada_#tree_brilliance#loves_trees_rural#picturetokeep_rural#ig_countryside#backroad_visions#rural_love#raw_country#rsa_fog#tv_foggy#everything_transport#tv_transport#kings_transports#abandonedexcellence#renegade_abandoned#abandonedafterdark

Well here is my very first Astro photo ever. I once drove out to Vermilion Lakes thinking it would be so easy to hop out of my car and go down and take a photo. After all, I’ve only been to this location 100 times. However, when I got there it was pitch black and dead silent and I couldn’t make myself get out of my car. I drove away angry with myself for being such a coward. The 2nd time, I forgot my tripod. 3rd, it was a full moon. And 4th- it was too cloudy. This was my 5th attempt at this. It is not perfect but I’m proud for not giving up, and this time mustering up every ounce of courage to actually get out of my car and go into the wilderness solo. I’ll keep working and keep improving, but this is just the first step when it comes to learning new things and pushing yourself. You have to overcome challenges and fears, and be persistent. There is no substitute for practice to make perfect. 📸Nikon D7500 @nikoncanada F3.5 20seconds ISO1600

The Boston Common’s 80-plus trees sparkled with festive lights for the holiday season. But, as a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, one tree sparkled the brightest for me—the Christmas tree that the people of Nova Scotia send the people of Boston every year (the tradition started in 1971) to thank them for the train carrying physicians and medical supplies that arrived shortly after the Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917. Two thousand people died and 9,000 were wounded when a French ship carrying ammunitions collided with a Norwegian freighter in the Narrows of Halifax Harbour, precipitating the largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima. Adorned with 7,000 lights, the 46-ft white spruce from Oxford, Nova Scotia, was visible across the Boston Common #bostoncommon#boston#cityofboston#halifax#cityofhalifax#dartmouth#cityofdartmouth#halifaxexplosion#bluenoser#novascotia#exploreNS#explorenovascotia#xmas#xmastree#xmastree🎄#novascotiachristmastree#christmastree🎄#sharecangeo@visitnovascotia@cityofhalifax@cityofboston@knowhistorycanada

Icefields Parkway / Jasper, AB // As we drove south from Jasper National Park to Banff, this was our view as we approached the Columbia Icefield. Straight ahead is Mt. Athabasca (11,453’) and to the right is the Athabasca Glacier. We stopped at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre for breakfast with an incredible view of the glacier! Although it's been a relatively mild December so far, I'm super excited to break away from the snow and ice this upcoming weekend to head off to Palm Springs, California, on an assignment with @flairairlines for a few days, catching the inaugural Flair flight from Edmonton to Palm Springs. I'll be showcasing what Palm Springs has to offer to Edmonton and area residents with both locally curated events, as well as my own photography adventures in the area, as a great getaway option to escape the cold climes of Winter on the cheap. I'm bringing along my pal @shane_turgeon, which always leads to great photography adventures. Check out my intastories starting on Sunday to follow along with this adventure, and make sure to follow @flairairlines to see some amazing flight deals in your area, as they launch to several new US destinations from Western Canada.

I was once told(jokingly) by a coworker that Woodland Caribou will be the “great debate of your generation”. Fast forward almost a decade later, and that notion is starting to bare fruit. If you have lived in northern BC for any significant amount of time, and have spent time in the back country, you’ve undoubtably noticed the steep decline in Caribou numbers over the years. It is easy to point to reasons as to why. Fragmented swaths of land due to industry, poor land management, increased wolf populations, inability to adapt to sudden change in their environment and so on. There is no argument here. Ultimately, the debate poses more substantial questions. Who has more of a right to be here? Who’s right is it to live, thrive, and enjoy a wilderness in which Caribou have occupied since time immemorial? Who’s job is it to protect and be a voice for a species that have no voice of their own? Do I have more of a right to hike, snowmobile or build a road over the side of a valley, then a Caribou does to stride across the same valley on route to its traditional wintering grounds? Questions with no easy answers, especially for a population of people in the north who live in stride with the same wilderness that Caribou do. It’s a daunting debate for someone like me who has a leg in both races. It is not a popular opinion in the north, but one thing is certain, concessions will have to be made and sacrifice is a must in order to save this fragile species that is at huge risk. I’d hate to be on the wrong side of history if we lose the last of the Woodland Caribou in our lifetime. We owe it to those not yet born to do something significant now...

Through the lens of my mind I see life not as an object but as art that that I process through my heart- my words . . . I captured this image a couple years back and quite often locations don’t always provide favourable photographs. Sometimes you truly do have to search high and low for something to capture your eye, which is kind of similar to life. There will be times in life that seem unfavourable, unkind and dark but you really have to search for that pinch of light, that ounce of hope and delve into it. This is why I love creativity you kind of get lost in your own little world and it occupies you and provides you with the opportunity to express what you carry. Art is the dream you carry and I believe the greatest place to share art is in the reality we may think we have no control over. The reality we live in is the one we create but we must dare to believe in the creation of our dream, that being the life that exist within us- my words . . . I love writing ❤️ Thank you for reading and for those who leave me kind words, I appreciate it. Once you express your words, you sprinkle a little yourself into the Universe. We need more good even though at times it seems the world is turbulent and hurtful. ✌🏻❤️ Once we band together we create more of what we want. . . . #shareyourlove#discoveron#ilovewinter#winterbliss#exploreontario#explorecanada#lakeontario#sharecangeo#shareyourweather
