I sometimes think that paintings travel more than I do. I last saw this family portrait by Peter de Hooch @akademie_der_bildenden_kuenste but it is temporarily the guest of the Prinsenhof in Delft. De Hooch was a tremendous artist and, in my opinion, on his good days, the equal of #vermeer. They both captured the cool, grey light of the Netherlands. However, whilst Vermeer was a master of the moment of almost photographic stillness, De Hooch effortlessly captured the bored / miserable / long suffering feelings of his sitters who were forced to stand in courtyards for too long. The central lady is handling her apple as if it were a grenade in need of diffusion #haldanefineart#oldmasters#artadvisory#artdealer#burgher#portrait#goldenage#delft#courtyard#netherlands#holland#dutch#seventeenthcentury#17thcentury

Has anyone listened to this? What were your thoughts? I’m a little unsure... I like that it provides a cohesive narrative of the #salemwitchtrials I like that the current prominent academics were interviewed and gave fastidious and exacting accounts/evidence. I liked that it was interrogative of the limited archival source material but ultimately found it a rather unoriginal and a typically historicist approach to the subject matter. It is not a particularly refreshing version of story telling but I’m inclined to think that’s due to how well trodden the metaphorical ground of this area of history is... Maybe if you haven’t read obsessively and extensively about early American history, or the British colonies you would appreciate this more? But if you are even a slight history geek, it might be a little hmmm. 📚🔍 Also I just worked a 10 hour night shift so my brain is fried but I was conscious I barely post any more so sleep deprivation made me write this. #sorrynotsorry#unobscured#lorepodcast#lore#unobscuredpodcast#history#research#salemmassachusetts#hysteria#seventeenthcentury#colonies#nightshifts#readyforbed#puritanism#podcasts#thenewworld#theamericas#whatiswrongwithme

Parts of this was like reading about modern times! 'The political upheaval of the mid-seventeen century is a unique event in English history', today's situation may be discribed as such in centuries to come. An enjoyable teaching day on Saturday, working for @londondrawing at Tate Britain, the subject being "Swagger Portraits and Celebrity", here I am swaggering around - a chance to talk about the works of William Dobson and Joshua Reynolds, and for our attendees to sketch directly from the paintings. Final pictures at the end are their respective self portraits. I love these chaps, so for Tate to have two temporary rooms dedicated to them, side by side, made it a great setup for a lesson. * We will be doing our next life drawing theatre event, based on William Blake, on April 13th. A fantastic opportunity to draw multiple models in a live performance. For tickets, please see my bio!

Theme week at historicalroyals 👑Forgotten heirs: Heinrich Friedrich, Hereditary Prince of the Palatinate (1614-1629). He was the eldest son of Frederick V of the Palatinate, and his wife Elizabeth Stuart. ————————————————————————As the eldest son, he was the heir to his father's titles and his future looked very bright. But the accident occurred, and the young prince drowned at the age of 15. The accident happened on his way to Amsterdam, where he was going watch the captured Spanish treasure fleet. He drowned when he was crossing the Haarlemmermeer (a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is a polder, consisting of land reclaimed from water). ————————————————————————He is unknown to most people because of his early death, and has become a forgotten heir. His younger siblings are more famous, among these are Charles I Louis, Elector Palatine (father of Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orleans). Prince Rupert of the Rhine (was a cavalry commander during the English Civil War) and Sophia, Electress of Hanover (mother of King George I of Great Britain). ————————————————————————#history#oldroyals#historicalroyals#henryfrederick#frederickvofthepalatine#thewinterking#elizabethstuart#thewinterqueen#hereditaryprinceofthepalatinate#germanhistory#europeanhistory#german#thepalatinate#haarlemmermeer#meninhistory#royalmen#royalprinces#royalpaintings#forgottenheirs#seventeenthcentury#themeweek#enjoy#ilikehistory#historyisfun#inlovewithhistory#iamahistorylover#historyislove#lovehistory#keepcalmandlovehistory

A very windy and rainy day, we went to Llancaich Fawr. The immersive experience is based in 1645. Your entry is a hand written letter of recommendation from a family member of the household. The servants are waiting inside to show you around the house and answer any questions you might have. They recommended a ‘good Christian beating’ as discipline for the children a few times and had no idea what phones were or photos. Rich had great fun dishing out penalties in the court room in the middle of the house. Great fun and the actors were really good at involving the children telling them about life in 1645. This weekend there is a special offer on £10 off a family ticket so it was only £15 for the four of us. Fully recommend 👌 Rugby now this afternoon Wales are playing Ireland at home for the grand slam. C’mon Wales! Cymru am byth! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #llancaiachfawr#localheritage#localhistory#manorhouse#1600#seventeenthcentury#familydayout#wales#daysoutsouthwales#welshhistory

I've written a new blog about a recent addition to Joan Carlile's oeuvre (click link in bio to read more). Whilst scrolling through Instagram a few months ago, I spotted this photograph taken at a Wedding Reception by fellow paintings enthusiast @shergoldco . Although the picture bore the traditional attribution to Lely, it was clear that this was in fact a portrait by one of Britain's first professional female artists. Indeed, the Arcadian setting and deer make this a fine link between Carlile's full length portraits of women in white and the outstanding group portrait at Lamport Hall. #JoanCarlile#Portrait#Painting#art#femaleartist#chippenhampark#baroque#fashion#white#dress#artofinstagram#arthistory#vandyck#cambridgeshire#diana#instaart#face#seventeenthcentury

It was not only the first piece of her work ever purchased by the gallery but is also the only female self portrait to form part of the Italian 17th century Collection. If you haven’t read about this woman’s harrowing story which lead her to paint some incredibly graphic responses to her trauma - you should. @artfund@nationalgallery . . #IWD2019#BalanceforBetter#InternationalwomensMonth#womenartists#womenleaders#5womenartists#artcanartist#internationalwomensday#womenshistorymonth#refusetobethemuse#IWD19 #artcan#artemisiagentileschi#seventeenthcentury#Italian#collection#NGArtemisia

Our #worldbookday post didn’t quite make it onto Instagram, but we’re hoping Friday afternoon is as good a time as any to share a 17th-century dog picture? It’s the titlepage from Mercator’s Atlas - a ‘book of the world’ for #worldbookday 😉 - printed ‘under the watchful dog’ by de Hondt in 1623. Our copy is a 5th edition, not exactly up-to-date when purchased, but featuring much beautiful hand-colouring... And a faithful #doggo . . . #maps#atlas#history#library#librariesofinstagram#dogs#dogsofinstagram#titlepage#watercolour#printing#seventeenthcentury#arthistory

“Art lies, to tell the truth. Flowers from different seasons bloom impossibly together. Trees are shifted around in the landscape to frame the composition. Dressing the part was not enough in itself to be successful at the Stuart Court: making the ‘correct’ entrance was also extremely important. Prince Philippe of France, Duke of Orléans (1640-1701). He was the son of Louis XIII of France and his wife Anne of Austria, he was also the younger brother of Louis XIV of France. ————————————————————————During his childhood, his mother was observed to address Philippe by such nicknames as "my little girl" and encouraged him to dress in feminine clothing even as a young man – a habit he would retain all his life. It appears that (1658), was the key year in which Philippe's sexuality became well defined. He made his first contacts that year with Philippe de Lorraine, known as the Chevalier de Lorraine, the male lover with whom he would establish the closest emotional attachment throughout his life.———————————————————————— In (1661), he married his cousin Henrietta Anne of England. They got two daughters before she died in (1670). He remarried to Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate in (1671), and got two children with her.———————————————————————— Philippe collapsed after suffering a fatal stroke, at noon 9 June (1701), at the age of sixty. His heart was taken to the Val-de-Grâce convent on 14 June, and his body was taken on 21 June to the Basilica of St Denis, where it remained until the French Revolution, at which time the basilica was desecrated and all graves destroyed.————————————————————————#history#oldroyals#historicalroyals#philippedukeoforléans#princeoffrance#filsdefrance#dukeoforléans#monsieur#thekingsbrother#royalprinces#palaceofversailles#courtofthesunking#thesunking#louisxivoffrance#thekingofkings#seventeenthcentury#phototakeninversailles#ifyouevergoingtofrancevisitversailles#whatanexperience#lovethisera#historyisfun
