This is Loijipu being fed by Paul. Paul was sponsored by Maja to go to Sagana Technical School where he got a certificate in Auto Mechanics. He is now a Ranger at Sera Rhino Sanctuary, a Samburu community conservancy. He is one of two Rangers who looks after Loijipu, a Black Rhino calf who was abandoned by his mother. Paul feeds and sleeps with Loijipu. Additionally, he takes him on walks in order to integrate him back into the bush. Paul loves his job and is extremely proud to say that it has enabled him to get married to Sofia (who rides a bike!) and to build a house. Sponsorship elevates not just a life but also the community and the environment. • • • • • #education#thorntreeproject#Samburu#kenya#africa#sendachildtoschool#sponsorclass#sponsorapreschool#scholarships#alleviatepoverty#clodaghdesign#tuckerrobbins#serarhinosanctuary#conservation#rhino#nrt_kenya

What a year it's been for Sera’s rhinos! There were three black rhino calves born in Sera this year, and zero incidents of poaching. This is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to the tireless work of rangers, the community and their partners. These collaborative efforts have shown that not only is community-led black rhino conservation possible, but it makes sense. Particularly for one little black rhino calf - Loijipu.
Loijipu was abandoned by his mother in February 2017, discovered by a ranger patrol. With the support of the @kenyawildlifeservice, he was moved to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in nearby Namunyak Conservancy, to be hand-reared by keepers. Like Sera, Reteti is another ‘community conservancy first’ for east Africa, being the only community-run establishment of its kind in the region. Loijipu thrived under the care of his keepers, and as his wild instincts became stronger, they decided he was ready to go back to Sera. He was moved on the 6th June 2018 and arrived to a colourful welcome by Sera Community Conservancy members. His re-wildling will be a gradual process, and for now he remains under the close watch of keepers and rangers. He is taking well to life at Sera, and is now one of 15 black rhinos in the Sanctuary. Coming toward the end of my time in Northern Kenya and this place has definitely found a place in my heart. The work of the conservancies in this area, the NRT and the multiple charities that assist in incredible projects such as the Sera Rhino Sanctuary all deserve the highest of praise, none more so than the teams on the ground making this all possible. #serarhinosanctuary#rhino#northernrangelandstrust#rangers#wildlifeprotection#rhino#orphan#saruni#kenya#samburu#conservation#conservationinaction#communityconservancy#tusk#tusktrust#usaid

Boy to Man – not a boy band from the 90’s with fewer members – but Loijupu the rescued rhino growing up quickly in Sera Conservancy. With his growing taste for all things twiggy, bush and shrub, he’ll be off his milk in no time and off on his own. Cherished moments indeed. Thanks to @brian.siambi and @NomadMagazine for sharing the image. #rhino#savetherhino#seraconservancy#serarhinosanctuary#sarunilodges#sarunirhino#protection#conservation#loijupu#northernkenya#wild#wilderness#thereturn

“Our society is now changing and starting to see the value of women’s leadership. At first they would ask - how can a woman lead us? By my second term, I was elected unopposed because my work spoke for itself.” Pauline Longojine, Former Sera Conservancy Board Chairlady and current NRT Peace Ambassador. Whether she’s bringing her community together to spearhead East Africa’s first community-run black rhino sanctuary, or empowering women to take the lead in building peace, Pauline is unquestionably a force to be reckoned with. Elected to the Sera Community Conservancy board in 2011, Pauline served for the maximum two terms. She ran an unopposed Chair of the Board in her second term, becoming one of the first women in an NRT member conservancy to take that role. It was under her leadership that Sera became the first community-run black rhino sanctuary in east Africa, setting new standards and best practices for endangered species conservation in Kenya. “The introduction of rhino in Sera is something that I will always be proud of,” she says. “Our children are employed by the rhino sanctuary and the community as a whole will continue to grow from tourism revenue.” Pauline is now a peace ambassador, and has played an instrumental role in launching NRT’s multi-ethnic women’s peace forum - which aims to equip women with skills for building peace and detecting and preventing conflict. “In the beginning, women were afraid to speak to their sons and husbands,” says Pauline, “but we challenged them to think of the future they wanted for their community. Now they come back and tell us that their sons are listening to them and thinking twice before going out to raid.” Driving her work now is a firm belief that women can and should play a leading role in mitigating ethnic conflict, and this starts by creating safe spaces for dialogue and starting conversations. “There are certain things that the morans (young men) will open up and tell me, that they would not tell the men - when they are with me, they know that they are with a mother, and will not be judged.” #10Women#SDG10#peace#womeninconservation#serarhinosanctuary

Two brilliant days travelling to meet some of the women shaking things up in @nrt_kenya community conservancies. Including Pauline, former Chairlady of Sera Conservancy, who was instrumental in establishing the first community-owned black rhino sanctuary in east (probably all) Africa. She’s now a peace ambassador and general force of awesomeness for her community and their neighbours. #serarhinosanctuary#womeninconservation

@Regrann from @nrt_kenya - Welcome to the world Ntibikwa! We’re delighted to celebrate the fourth calf to be born at Sera Rhino Sanctuary. On the 16th of August 2018, black rhino Naitamany had her second calf, a female who has been named Ntibikwa by Sera rhino rangers. Her name roughly translates as ‘long-awaited’ in Samburu, and was inspired by the long period of time that Naitamany hid her calf - a total of 4 days. The teams on the ground gave mother and calf adequate time to bond, and were recently able to snap these lovely images when the two emerged for a short while. Ntibikwa brings the sanctuary's rhino population to 14. Each rhino birth here is not only a huge joy, but a significant boost to community-led endangered species efforts. #rhinocalf#wildbaby#blackrhino#serarhinosanctuary#samburu#savetherhino#conservation

On our way to film the amazing work being done by the #NorthernRangelandsTrust at Sera Wildlife Conservancy in the heart of beautiful Kenya! Sera forms part of the large rangeland mass that also encompasses Biliqo-Belesa,Namunyak and Melako. Samburu communities formed the conservancy with the aim of linking the three rival ethnic groups that live in the area; the Samburu, Borana and Rendille. All communities are primarily pastoralists, with a history of ethnic conflict. It was agreed that by the community conservancies that working together, securing pace and sustainable rangelands would be more easily achieved. Such was the progress of the communities, that in May 2015, the Sera Rhino Sanctuary was also established. Sera became the first community conservancy in East Africa to own and operate a sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of the critically endangered black rhino! 🦏 . . . #disunitythefilm#unitethefight#serarhinosanctuary#serawildlifeconservancy#lewawildlife#kenya#africa#conservation#communityinvolvement#documentary#savetherhino#rhinohorn#poaching#grandcaravan#pilot#africanpilot

Spot the Rhino! Tracking the Eastern Black Rhino on foot in Sera Conservancy. As part of a groundbreaking initiative this critically endangered species is now back on community land in north Kenya for the first time in 30 years. A positive collaboration between the Kenya wildlife Service, the Northern Rangelands Trust and the Sera community has proven that wildlife conservation can be effective outside of National parks and reserves. #generationconservation#nrt#lewa#serarhinosanctuary#communityconservation#sarara#positivechange#whyilovekenya#rescue#sararawilderness

33 impala have been moved from @lewa_wildlife to the Sera Rhino Sanctuary in a bid to boost biodiversity in the area. The impala are settling in well - so well in fact that two fawns have been born in the holding pen, bringing the number up to 35! Once the rains ensure good forage, the groups will be released into the Sanctuary to join the black rhino.  This move was made possible in part by the generous support of @usaid#impala#translocation#biodiversity#conservation#serarhinosanctuary#NRT#northernkenya#kenya#antelope#release#holdingpen#waitingfortherains
