It’s Mother’s Day in France 🇫🇷 and seeing as my mum is one-quarter French (and I cling like crazy to my one-eighth!), I’m claiming the day for us, too. This photo is one of the few I have from the first time my parents took me to Paris. I was five and it was Christmas and there were fairy lights (look at the pretty ones on the Eiffel Tower here, strung up like a 🎄) and chandeliers and golden cherubs 👼🏻 everywhere, and Paris has been my twinkling wonderland ✨ ever since. I remember looking up to Mum speaking French and being so enchanted by the sound of it, like I was falling under a magic spell 🔮. I’m forever grateful to her for having passed on so many things, including her love of Paris and all things French, but also a commitment to work-life balance. I’ve always thought Mum to be the ultimate superfemme à la parisienne - she can do anything: smash glass ceilings 💪🏼, chair boards, restructure departments, power through a book a day, ace crosswords, knit and crochet🧣(I mean, crochet!!), all the while having time for her family and friends, and herself, and never a hair out of place nor a polished nail chipped 💅🏻. Okay, so she can’t cook an egg, let alone a soufflé, to save herself, but she can throw together a very chic cheese plate, plus has great taste in champagne 🍾. So all in all, I was pretty damn lucky in life’s mother lottery 💓

This is Citypharma, the pharmacie I most love in Paris. And also hate. Let me explain. It has everything your dry or crinkly or spotty or ruddy skin needs, and more, at amazing prices, but it also has hordes of shoppers jostling for baskets full of bargains. You don’t walk through the aisles so much as get shoved through, and if you don’t know exactly what you want, you risk stress-shopping and grabbing any old thing at you whizz past, as well as a severe case of buyer’s remorse. (Not to mention some serious skin stress, which kind of defeats the whole skincare point in the first place, but anyway …) I was shopping here (or trying to) one day when a woman turned to me and hissed, ‘C’est l’enfer.’ It’s hell. And it is. But it’s worth the pain. Here’s what you must do: Try to go first thing, although be aware that you’ll probably get bowled over by a few trolleys as the shelves are restocked (why they can’t do this before opening is beyond me) and make sure you’ve done your research, with your list ready to go. (If you have the exact French product names or, better still, product pictures, you might find a nice assistant you can hand the list to, for some personal-shopping help). Make sure to first energise yourself for your beauty mission with a hot chocolate up the road at Les Deux Magots. And when you resurface, possibly hours later, you might well need a stiff drink, so head back up to Boulevard Saint-Germain, and restore yourself at Café de Flore. So there’s my Beauty Service Announcement for you. Bonne chance and bon shopping, mes amies!

Every trip to Paris is wildly different for me, always depending on who I am with or whether I am traveling alone. When @airfrance asked if I’d review their Business Class product with my mum for an early Mother’s Day I was excited to try and show her a combination of the more cliché aspects of my favorite city and hopefully a few things that were a little more “off the beaten path.” I think, and hope, that’s what we ended up accomplishing. What do you think @paintthenight? • Yet I have to admit it was often the more cliché spots that did thrill me most during this visit. I’d never been to Paris when it was SO warm (nearly hot) and SO green; so they had a new face on them that I’d never seen before. Standing here on the edge of the Tuileries, looking down the gauntlet of marvelous hedges to the majesty of the Louvre, hearing the birds in the trees, feeling the sunshine on my face, and my favorite language swirling around me as people came and went...was some kind of heaven. I grew fed up with NYC after 8 years of living there part or full time and I’ll tell you the reason I’ve never tried to move to Paris even though I dream of it: I don’t want to lose the love like I did with New York. I want to always believe that Paris is a good idea. I always want to be a lover and not a hater. That, I can do when I’m only a visitor. And that’s why I know there will always be a next time and I will never be done visiting Paris or in fact any part of France. Merci for always being willing to come with me when I do 🙏🏼😘 #parisjetaime#atoutfrance#meetparis#seeparis#franceisintheair#hostedtravel

One last walk around Jardin du Luxembourg this morning. It’s a wonderful, sunny day in Paris. Even though my stay here has been short, I’ve really tried to be in the moment and soak in the sights and smells and tastes. Eleven years ago I spent 2 weeks photographing this city. I still think some of those photos, shot on film and in black and white were some of my best. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long ago and so many things in my life have changed since then. It’s all a been part of the joie de vivre and lifes hauts et bas. A jusqu'à ce qu'on se revoie and a hui hou (Hawaiian) Paris. • • • • • #parisianstyle#loveparis❤️#seeparis#travelblogger#traveldeeper#seetheworld#photographerslife#francos#instaparis#insta_travel#instalove#lovely#solotraveler#ontheroad

On Monday I went to Les Puces, the huge Paris flea market. It makes American antiques look brand new! There were sooo many amazing things I wanted to buy, but sadly I’m a poor grad student who can only look 👀 Today, I’m leaving this wonderful city to go to my next adventure in Israel!

Paris 3: Touristy Things | we spent the third day hitting up the Sacre Coeur, saying I love you in front of the Wall of Love, traipsed around Parc Monceau, saw the Arc de Triomphe, tried Laduree’s macaroons (sorry, Pierre Hermès was better 🤭), hit up the love locks and two museums, and ended the evening sipping on rose by the Seine. Our days were packed but all of it was worth it! #knappstakeonparis#anniversary#anniversaryweekend#seeparis#tourist#isthisreallife

My favorite shot so far! Pont des Arts! Unfortunately, this once padlock covered bridge couldn’t support the increasing weight. The locks of lover & the weight of people walking back & forth began to make the bridges foundation unstable. So much so, that a section of the railing fell off a few years ago. Once again... I’m late to the party. #😒 Currently, only a few bunches of locks remain, around a few light poles. #latetotheparty#ponsdearts#paris#bridge#seeparis#seetheworld#travel#justgo#go#lock#locks#love#❤️#lovers#river#europe#eurotrippart2#vacca#vacation

When you wake up in the morning with anxiety and depression, most mornings begin
When you wake up in the morning with anxiety and depression, most mornings begin as a struggle. You feel this crushing heaviness upon you, and find it difficult to talk or function. Your heart and head hurt, and you wish desperately you were all better, that the insidious blackness coursing through your veins was gone. It’s this solitary cloud that dumps its contents of rain upon you, while all else around is sunny skies. Such was my experience upon waking this morning, and, having seen so many posts recently about mental health, I decided to share my experience. And just to give you even a tiny ray of sunshine if you’re feeling bleak like me, here is a throwback to Monet’s gardens in Giverny in France. I like gardens, because sometimes they allow you to forget that we live in a crazily busy world, where our senses are constantly being bombarded by new stimuli. For all intents and purposes, you could be a woman from the 1800s, lazily writing a letter to her aunt next to a lake. Your long and impractical dress practically suffocating you while your corset finishes off the job, your cousin would suddenly appear, chiding you for not being chaperoned by a man or another lady to accomplish even such an innocuous task. Okay, maybe let’s not imagine that, but at least the letter would take a long time to arrive, lessening the responsibilities of a hasty reply. And if you didn’t want to reply back then, why, you could just say the letter was lost in the mail. 😜 I have no idea what I’m gibbering about anymore, but I wish you all a lovely day or evening. 😜 🌹 🌹 🌹 #claudemonet#monet#paris#parisisalwaysagoodidea#travelblogger#travelblog#travelcommunity#france#wanderlustparis#giverny#monetsgarden#travelphotography#topparisphoto#waterlilies#traveljunkie#travelphotographer#jetaimeparis#francophile#travelparis#seeparis#travelfrance#aussietraveller#instatravel#travelgram#travel#vernon#parisdaytrip#garden

When I was last in Paris, I stayed just a macaron’s throw from @maisonladuree on Rue Bonaparte. And most days I’d walk past and think, Oh I won’t get any Ladurée macarons today because there are so many others to try in this city and I can always buy these ones in Sydney ... And now I’ve come back to Sydney only to find that Ladurée here has closed, and I’m not quite sure how I’m going to get over that. Hmmm ... with a few more Paris holidays, perhaps? 🤔

#funfactfriday: The Seine was not always the pretty focal point of Paris, a reason for rosé picnics 🍷 🥖 🧀 🍅 and slow swoon-worthy walks. For many centuries it was the dumping ground for the city’s waste 🗑, and the waterway for cargo barges and washhouse boats rather than pleasure cruises 🚤 and flower-strewn houseboats. Fortunately for lovers of long lunches en plein air ☀️ and waterside wanderings, the Seine was cleaned up by the turn of the 20th century, so that we can enjoy the river without breathing in eau de dirty socks 🧦

When you take the pretty pink jacket off #parisdreaming, you get these simple black & white stripes. Which I think is rather apt, because as much as many of us see la vie en rose, and wish we could live in Paris, we know that’s really just a beautiful rose-tinted dream that colours our more modest reality. And that’s totally fine. And that happens to be what my book is essentially about: how you can live à la parisienne even if in you actually reside on the other side of the world; and also how to lure out your inner Parisienne, stripes and all 🖤💓🖤

Today is the feast day of Saint Honoré, the patron saint of patissiers and bakers (along with florists and candle-makers: a rather delightful patronage set to have, non?), and the guy who gave his name to the flamboyant swirl of cream-puffs and cream that is the St.Honoré cake. The treat is available all around Paris but I love the @gosselin.paris one that can be found on the dessert tray at @lesdeuxmagots (on the far right), among the various other @pierrehermeofficial delicacies. 😇🍰🍮🍩🍪😍

When I look at this photo, I wish I’d taken this same perspective as a video because then I could more adequately share with you the visceral memory I have of this moment. It was just before mum and I met @kasiadietz and her mum at @caretteofficiel. The sun was shining so brilliantly as to almost be blinding and I remember the heat on my face being surprising. It was so unusual for Paris, I thought. A breeze made the leaves above my head sound like a musical instrument, tinkling with the kind of charm I only seem to find in Europe. I could hear multiple languages around me and the happy harmony of laughter that transcends language and accent alike. I was so happy!! • Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. It’s located in the Marais, at the junction of the 3rd and 4th arrondissement. Most credit its charm to the regularity of the facade that surrounds the green square, the architecture of Louis XIII. It is perfectly symmetrical at an exact 140 x 140 m. The perfection of the layout of the chestnut trees and flowerbeds always distracts me from the buildings though. I can stand or sit for hours distracted by the shadows on the ground, admiring how ideally planned it all is. How lacking in randomness when so much of the rest of the world seems so imperfect and catastrophic lately.... alas, this time friends were waiting with a plate of macarons and a glass of rosé. So @paintthenight and I did tear ourselves away 😉 #placedesvosges#seeparis#meetparis#shotoniphonex

One of history’s most unapologetically passionate lovers was Parisian abbess and scholar Héloïse d’Argenteuil, who died on this day in 1164. The story of her and Pierre Abelard has everything: a dreamboat teacher, a beautiful and intelligent student (okay, it’s not quite PC, let alone PG), a meeting of minds, secret Parisian rendezvous, hot-under-the-ruffled-collar passion, a cosmic love child called Astrolabe, social condemnation, devastating heartbreak, castration (oui!), banishment to a nunnery, unrequited longing, an ultimately transcendental love, and the most swoon-worthy letters you’ll ever have the privilege to read. After such a tumultuous lifetime together (even when separated), the duo now rests peacefully and eternally side by side, in this suitably and glamorously gothic tomb 🙏🏻🙏🏻
