We’ve had a few messages asking when the ‘Science Communicator’ will be restocked - they have been ordered, but they won’t be in the shop for a few weeks. For now we only have seconds available, these are pins that have little imperfections - perfect for if you plan on pinning it to a backpack where it’ll get bashed about a bit anyway. These are only £2 too! If you’d like to purchase one, just head to the ‘surprise seconds’ listing on Etsy, and leave a note requesting a ‘Science Communicator’ seconds pin 💛

Time for another fun science fact share! We discussed this one over tea last night (we had fun trying to guess how much the percentage figure was). It really hit home to my daughters why we often talk about how important it is to respect nature and the environment. I find it fascinating how science forms the basis of so many things around us, and how easy it can be to discuss it as part of everyday life with children. It’s a great way to encourage children to be more curious about the world around them and spark really interesting conversations. Showing girls that science is not just for boys is something I'm passionate about, and one of the founding reasons behind The Girl Element!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ * ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #STEM#scienceforkids#scienceforall#sciencekids#sciencefun#ilovescience#kidsscience#sciencerocks#littlescientist#littlelearners#curiouskids#stemkids#stemforkids#scienceforkids#scienceforeveryone#scienceisforeveryone#instascience#getcurious#science#stemlearning#stemeducation#kidsscience#futurescientists#miniscientists#scienceisgreat#raisingstrongdaughters#raisingdaughters#raisingstronggirls#stronggirls#littlefeminist

Here’s our lovely Lucy rocking her LotsofSocks to celebrate World Down's Syndrome Day, along with members of the team here at CBHQ.⠀ ⠀ Most people are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes. People with Down's syndrome are born with an extra chromosome.⠀ ⠀ WDSD is held on the 21st day of the 3rd month to signify the uniqueness of the third copy of chromosome 21 which causes Down's syndrome.⠀ ⠀ The theme for Down's Syndrome Awareness Week 2019 is 'Leave No One Behind'. We support Down's Syndrome UK's goal that every single person with Down’s syndrome should have the same opportunities as everyone else, in every area of life.⠀ ⠀ Did you wear lots of socks today to support WDSD? Share your pictures to help raise awareness and ensure that no-one is left behind.⠀ ⠀ #WorldDownSyndromeDay#WDSD2019#DownSyndromeDay#chromosome21#extrachromosome#DownSyndrome#LotsofSocks#LeaveNoOneBehind#curiositybox#scienceforall#getcurious

S C I E N C E E X P E R I M E N T S! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the best ways to bring #science into the home and make it part of everyday life is to do fun experiments with the kids. As it was British Science Week we had fun with a few at the weekend, starting with making Rainbow Skittles which they absolutely loved. It was super quick and easy and made no mess (unless you count the sticky fingers afterwards eating them!). See Stories for the experiment in action! If you fancy trying this fun one then here’s what to do... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What you need: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ * A white plate or bowl * Skittles (large pack so you can do a few different ones!) * Hot water ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Method Arrange the Skittles in colour formation around the edge of the plate by pushing back around the edges. Then pour a little hot water into the middle of the plate. Now wait for the colours to diffuse into the water! My daughter was absolutely fascinated! She then enjoyed eating the Skittles while I explained the basic science behind it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ * #STEM#scienceforkids#scienceforall#sciencekids#sciencefun#ilovescience#kidsscience#sciencerocks#littlescientist#littlelearners#curiouskids#stemkids#stemforkids#scienceforkids#scienceforeveryone#stemeducation#scienceisforeveryone#instascience#getcurious#curiouskids#kidsscience#futurescientists#miniscientists#scienceisgreat#thegirlelement#indieoxford#oxford#oxfordbusiness

This March 15, students are making a global strike to show their anger and conce
This March 15, students are making a global strike to show their anger and concern about the lack of concrete actions and real changes in relation to climate change. And they are absolutely right! We know about the global warming for a while now, we have enough scientific evidences of its effects and, in fact, we are already living it. It is no longer even about of our children's future, it is our present and our future that is compromised. As Greta Thumberg said during COP24, "we ran out of excuses, we ran out of time" and that is why young people got tired of waiting and go out into the street to demand that measures be taken. They are the ones who are calling for this mobilization, but we are all involved, whether we like it or not. According to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2030 we must reduce CO2 emissions by half, if we do not want to overcome the 1.5°C increase in global temperature. And by 2050 we should reduce CO2 emissions to 75%. This report analyses the impact of a 1.5 and 2°C increase in temperature. It studies the technical, economic and social feasibility of making the transition we need. And the conclusion is clear, every half degree counts, and how! We can still act, but we must do it now! Despite the summits and agreements, emissions are not decreasing and even worse, at this rate, it is estimated that we will reach 3°C by 2100! The 2100 are not far away, many of those who will live that catastrophe have already been born. It's time to act, it's time to mobilize, #youthforclimate Ref https://www.ipcc.ch/ https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/sites/2/2018/07/SR15_SPM_version_stand_alone_LR.pdf #strike#grave#cambioclimatico#climatechange#globalwarming#climat#IPCC#GIEC#sciart#scicomm#drawinscience#sketchnotes#infografia#illustration#ilustracion#illustrationscientique#scientificillustration#ilustracioncientifica#science#ciencia#cienciaparatodos#scienceforall#sciencepourtous#facts#lovescience#GrèveMondialePourLeFutur#FridaysForFuture

Sometimes you take a shot and you know it’s going to be one that goes somewhere! Maybe it’s the red jacket, the looming dinosaur, the light or the massive smile? Maybe it’s all of them.... today I was with @bsgct public engagement day and I just love seeing all the curious faces and questions about genes and viruses and dna and where it could go My favourite moment of the day was not one I could possibly capture... women’s toilet and 3 little girls are sharing what their paper constructed viruses were. One girl proudly proclaims ‘well, this is the virus that can kill cancer cells, isn’t that amazing?’. Learning this at 7, it’s this kind of hope that I know will inspire many a young scientist! #bsw#britishscienceweek#scicomm#celltherapy#scienceforkids#scienceforall#naturalhistorymuseum#virus#genetherapy#scienceforthepeople#eventphotography#eventphotographer#eventplanning@reneewatson77@sarah_cotswolds@christina.slater.nee.yates

Innovative scientific experiments encourages students to ask questions and probe
Innovative scientific experiments encourages students to ask questions and probe for answers. Exploring new ideas through scientific thinking comes with hands on learning. Parivartan’s Science Workshop on 8th-9th March, 2019 came to an end on this note. Mr. G.S. Rautela, a famous scientist conducted this workshop with 94 students and 65 teachers. He demonstrated various experiments using very ordinary things like plastic bottles, old batteries, balloons and many more. It was a completely new approach to science which helped participants understand the scientific theories better. #ScienceWorkshop#ScienceforHumanity#ScienceandTechnology#ScientificExperiments#EducateIndia#EducationforAll#LearnScience#ScienceforAll#ScienceEducation#ScienceforFun#ScienceModel#EducationMatters#ScienceMatters#RuralIndia#CommunityDevelopment#RuralDevelopment#SocialDevelopment#ParivartanBihar#Siwan#Bihar

APPLIED PHYSICS LETTERS (APL). When we talk about internet of things (IoT), you think of different factors like pressure, temperature, and air quality. Now, when it comes to any sensor systems, it takes several months to develop these things. You need to choose the specific, sensitive, low-power, and suitable sensing devices. Here, in our currently published APL paper, we @tu.braunschweig have collaborated with Prof. Prades’s group @unibarcelona to develop 'nearly-zero-power' sensors that could make wearable, smart devices (for example smartphones) less power-hungry. Our micro light plate configuration based on semiconductor materials offers a direct path towards lowering the power consumption of light activated devices, because of the following concurrent factors: (a) the efficiency of the LED technology to convert electrical energy into light compared to other illumination systems, (b) the close distance between the light source and the sensor material (a few hundred nanometers), and (c) the independence between the LED area and the resulting irradiance impinging on the sensor. In this work, we presented the general framework that rules the design and systematic optimization of the micro light plate configuration, and demonstrated its validity and full functional equivalence to conventional approaches, with power requirements (e.g., 30 microwatts to detect 250 ppb of NO2 with ZnO nanoparticles) much lower than those found in the state of the art. Moreover, the micro light plate platforms provide unprecedented levels of control and reproducibility of the illumination conditions in a device that can be reproduced in large volumes with conventional microelectronic processing. With the here-presented strategy, these advantages can be incorporated to all sorts of integrated systems that require local illumination. Note: If you are interested to read the full paper, please just drop me a message or comment below with your e-mail. Moreover, I would be really happy if we could combine this platform with your unique sensing materials (whatever they are) for different kinds of sensors. Let us collaborate and develop smart sensors! #science#smartsensor#nanotechnology

Happy International Women's day! ♀️ Not so long ago, women had to challenge society just to be allowed to pursue higher education. I am fortunate that by the time I chose to make science my field of study, all I had to do was fill out an application. I thank all the women who came before me and helped blaze trails in science. I will continue to advocate for women in science ⚛and to help mentor all students who wish to pursue a career pathway in that field. Happy #fieldworkfriday#Martes enthusiasts! Did you know the use of tracking collars is one of the most common methods for monitoring wildlife? It allows researchers to collect home range, movement, and behavioral data. This technique is frequently used to study fishers. Researchers capture fishers using baited traps set using natural camouflage. Trained biologists and veterinarians then anesthetize the animal to assess its health and collect measurements, such as body-weight. Then, they fit it with a tracking collar and prepare it for recovery. Fishers are closely monitored once they anesthetized, and remain under the care of researchers until side effects of the anesthesia medication wear off. Animals with their newly fitted tracking collars are then released at the capture site. 📸 by Northern Sierra Fisher Reintroduction Project

I'm sitting here editing a manuscript that my name is on, and I find myself mostly editing word choice. The content is scientifically sound (wonderful actually, if I do say so myself), yet the way the primary author (not me) is choosing to phrase these concluding statements is misleading. This use of language to emphasize findings through exaggeration of language is a huge barrier to accurate delivery of information to the scientific community and the larger global community. I find myself editing language such as: "These data show that..." to "These data indicate that..." or "These data show direct interactions between..." to "These data suggest interactions between..." -- And while these may seem small, it is absolutely necessary to understand that we don't 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 anything. In fact, we can only begin to state more confident language after repeated and reproducible data. And unless we can show through direct methods coupled with activity based assays that thing X and thing Y directly associate and the disruption of that 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 interactiom leads to an alteration in the phenotype (outward presentation), we cannot use words such as "shows" or "direct". 👇🏼 My point 👇🏼 As scientists we owe it to the global community to be more intentional in our word choice such that we accurately portray the limits and strengths of our new knowledge. If your science communication includes mostly definitive terms and conclusions, I highly encourage you to adjust accordingly, less you propagate the issue further. Happy data, friends. -- -- #womeninchem#womeninacademia#womenwhoscience#womxninstem#scicomm#languagebarrier#mybeigelife#vervecoffee#visitsantacruz#santacruznow#scicommisradcomm#scienceforall#scientificlanguage#coffeeislife#chemistry#biochemistry#phdlife#responsiblescience#phd#biochemistry@thescicommunity@diversityinacademia@ph_d_epression

The longest-live, Somniosus microcephalus, Right, this is my third post “searching for immortality”.... there is so much diversity and interesting things to share, but this will be the last one (for the moment 😅). Certainly, our guest does not belong into the category of the "immortals", however, it is among the longest-lived vertebrates: the Greenland shark or Somniosus microcephalus. The Greenland shark is an iconic species of the Arctic Seas and widely distributed in the North Atlantic. It grows slowly and can reach over 5 m in length, suggesting a life span well beyond those of other vertebrates. They reach its sexual maturity around 156 ± 22 years and, the largest know animal, is around 392 (± 120) years old. To estimate its age, researches did a radiocarbon dating of eye lens. Why did they use lens? Because in vertebrates, crystalline proteins are formed during prenatal development and this tissue retains proteins synthetized at time. In other words, because in the crystalline we can find proteins as old as the shark itself. The results of this study show that the Greenland shark is the longest-lived vertebrate known, surpassing even the bowhead whale (Balaena Mysticetus, estimated longevity of 211 years). This new data gives us new understanding about the shark in particular, but also about its ecosystem, raising concerns about this and other species conservation. They were so hard to approach..!🦋💗🌍 ✨Stephen Hawking ❤️ in “A Brief History Of Time”, extract from chapter 3: “The Expanding Universe”🌌: . “If one looks at the sky on a clear, moonless night, the brightest objects one sees are likely to be the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. There will also be a very large number of stars, which are just like our own sun but much farther from us. Some of these fixed stars do, in fact, appear to change very slightly their positions relative to each other as earth orbits around the sun: They are not really fixed at all! This is because they are comparatively near to us. As the earth goes round the sun, we see them from different positions against the background of more distant stars. This is fortunate because it enables us to measure directly the distance of these stars from us: the nearer they are, the more they appear to move. The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is found to be about four light years away (the light from it takes about four years to reach earth), or about twenty three million million miles. Most of the stars that are visible to the naked eye lie within a few hundred light-years of us. Our sun, for comparaison, is a mere light-minutes away! The visible stars appear spread all over the night sky, but are particularly concentrated in one band, which we call the Milky Way. As long ago as 1750, some astronomers were suggesting that the appearance of the Milky Way could be explained if most of the visible stars lie in a single dislike configuration, one example of what we now call a spiral galaxy. Only a few decades later, the astronomer Sir William Herschel confirmed this idea by painstakingly cataloging the positions and distances of vast number of stars. Even so, the idea gained complete acceptance only early this century.” ❤️🌌❤️ 💛Check out, follow and use the #rtlina if you want! #planet#sciencelove#astronomy#astronaut#earth#cosmos#nature#cop24#protectyourenergy#love#savetheplanet#beauty#future#scienceforall#planetearth#science#blackhole#star#neutronstar#whitedwarf#cosmos_espy#astrophysics#theory#stephenhawking

So some days are just like this. Ok, so MANY days are just like this!!! While it's pretty great being able to do labwork, the reality is that postdoc life is also full of computer time! Today was just one of those days. My day was filled with plasmid (DNA) designing, updating my labbook, writing out new experiments, reading and writing grants. While I mostly don't tick everything off my list, at least today I got to tick a few of those things off. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that trying to get everything done as a postdoc is near impossible, but maybe that's ok because that's just life in academia and every day I get to make a bit more progress doing a job I love 🔬👩‍🔬👩‍💻 #lablife#research#scientist#postdoclife#postdoc#science#plasmidmap#labbook#writing#gel#electrophoresis#adayinthelife#womeninscience#womeninSTEM#girlsinSTEM#STEMsquad#scicomm#scientificcommunication#scienceforall#understandingscience#education#academia#cf#cysticfibrosis#curecf#cure#genetherapy#breatheeasy#letthembreathe#65roses
