This past weekend we potted up our seedlings and planted some more seeds for our garden. A perfect learning opportunity for my little budding botanist in conjunction with #Biology week for #YesBebeScience. 🌱 I pulled ‘How Do Flowers Grow’ off the bookshelf (a favourite of my daughters, as she loves flaps) and we went through it before we dug into the gardening task. Last year Riley really loved helping in the garden. Now that she’s 3, I’m excited to see what new connections she will make between our planting and harvesting. • • • • • #YesBebeLovesScience#WeLoveYesBebe#ScienceWeek#PlayAndLearn#InvitationToGrow#invitationtolearn#makelearningfun#openended#openendedplay#childhoodunplugged#letthembelittle#learningthroughplay#homeschooling#homeschoolinguk#homeschool#homeschoolfun#earlyyears#eyfs#scienceforkids#scienceathome#botany#botanist#biophilia

We used random things from the recycling bin for this sensory, small world set up! Brilliant thing was we could stretch it out over a few days so it kept Nevey-No-Shoes busy for ages. We just made the volcano with a 1.25 litre bottle, newspaper and glue and painted it. The base is just some dried peas and barley and we got the dinosaurs cheap at Kmart. We love playing around with the classic bicarb soda and vinegar reaction. You need quite a lot of the reactants for this activity as the CO2 gas needs to make it all the way up the tall bottle. Next time I’d probably just use a smaller bottle for sure. For this size though, we used 10 tsps of bicarb soda, 1/4 cup of detergent, 3/4 cup of water, a squirt of paint and 1 cup of vinegar. Swipe to see the end of the big eruption 😂 Am keen to play around a bit more with this reaction - I noticed @learningatheart put a an awesome recipe to make bath bomb dinosaur eggs. Any others you recommend please do tell ❤️ #playbasedlearning#scienceathome#sciencefortoddlers#toddleractivities#kidscraft#sensoryplay#smallworldplay#wherelearningmeetsplay#learningbydoing#entertainingtoddlers#parentalhacks

Back to the human body... can we talk about muscles with slime? It stretches and muscles stretch. If you pull hard it will break and well yes muscles will too. So yes, I think we can stretch slime into fitting with our current theme! Although, this really just turned into a, “burry the bones, extract the bones” activity. • SUPPLIES: - slime - styrofoam bones • We use BioColor and BioPutty solution from @discountschoolsupply to make our slime. It’s so easy! One of the things I love about making slime this way, is when A inevitably gets slime on her clothes, I just soak them in water prior to the washing machine and because it’s made with washable paint it has alway come off (in my experience). • #bodypartstheme#tinyn3rds#littlescientist#scienceart#preschool#learningathome#humanbodytheme#teachingpreschool#teachingkids#sciencewithkids#scienceathome#learningisfun#slimescience#steamkidschallenge#steam#oursensorykids#earlylearning101#teachingkidsathome#athomewithkids#learningathome#learningwithmom#invitationtocreate#toddlercrafts#slimewithkids#craftsforkids#everydayplayhacks#slime#sciencewithslime#learningwithslime#discountschoolsupply

Leprechaun Tracks Green Goo: Make A Fun STEM activity with your children this St. Patrick’s Day! According to Irish legends, people who are lucky enough, find a leprechaun and capture him. Leprechauns are tiny people in green colored clothes who usually mend shoes. They have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If captured by a human, they often grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. leprechauns leave tracks and a trail wherever they go. So we thought of making a green goo ( Oobleck )to track the Leprechaun 🍀 The idea was to leave the goo near the main entrance and to capture the leprechauns. We had fun making the goo (Oobleck) and discussing the science behind it. Science Behind The Oobleck: Oobleck is an example of a fluid whose viscosity is not constant, it changes depending on the stress or forces applied to it. If you squeeze it applying a large force, it becomes very viscous or thick like a ball. If you gently pour it, applying little force, it will flow like honey or molasses. This kind of fluid is called non Newtonian fluid. . . . #slime#green#activity#stpatricksday#diy#crafts#activitiesforkids#preschoolactivities#kindergarten#slime#polymer#monomer#chemistry#science#learningisfun#stemeducation#scienceathome#educationathome#earlyeducation#fun#activity#activitiesforkids#STEM#oobleck#nonnewtonianfluid#kidscience#curiosity#scinceisfun#weekend#kidseducation#scienceathome#momslife#elementaryeducation

We tried a simple acid-base experiment 🧪🧫using simple things from our kitchen. I first boiled red cabbage and strained the liquid. We added some of this purple liquid to test tubes and then into bowls. Miss A added vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda and water to the test tubes to see what happens. Adding acids (vinegar and lemon juice) turns the liquid pink but adding alkaline substances (such as baking soda) turns the solution blue. However, no color change happens when we add water. . . . Why does this happen: cabbage contains a pigment called anthocyanin which acts like a pH indicator and changes color with changes in pH. Water is neutral so addition of water results in no changes to color! . . Swipe to see the experiment in action! . . #scienceexperiment#preschoolsteam#girlslovescience#steamkidschallenge#steamkids#scienceeducationforkids#kitchenscience

Science + rainbows, I mean is there anything better?!? So the second I saw @prekwolfpack post her colored salt I ran to the store and bought six 4lb boxes of salt. That’s right, 24 pounds of salt! Because when I did the math, I figured two kids, I guess six boxes should be enough. Wait, what, each kid doesn’t need 12 pounds of salt to play with? And then on top of that, I decided to use them for an activity that required the worlds tiniest amount of salt... and they aren’t even required for an acid base reaction. So, moral of the story... choose an activity that uses more salt. I mean my math was 100% right. • SUPPLIES: - baking soda - vinegar - colored salt - gold salt - popsicle sticks - rainbow erasers - mini cauldron - learning resources twisty droppers - tray • This is an acid (vinegar) base (baking soda) reaction. The salt does not react, the color on the salt is extracted when the vinegar is added. The salt also adds a fun texture. My kids like to play with the mixture once it’s done reacting so I usually try to give them things to stir with (mini popsicle sticks) and things to add in (rainbow erasers). Super awkward video in my stories on how I put this setup together 😆🤪 • #scienceathome#rainbowscience#preschoolscience#preschoolteacher#teachingathome#sciencewithkids#tagfromtheheart#earlylearning101#getcreativewith#steam#oursensorykids#steamkidschallenge#teachersfollowteachers#teachersofinstagram#earlychildhoodeducation#preschool#raisingcreativekids#classroomideas#sciencematters#crashbangcolor#rainbowart#afternoonsathomewithkids#athomewithkids#kitchenscience#tinyn3rds#steamforkids#simplescience

Who’s ready for some gummy bear osmosis? All you need are some gummy bears (or gummy vitamins 😆😇), water, salt, and sugar! We made three solutions: plain water, supersaturated salt solution, and supersaturated sugar solution. As in any good experiment, we also had a control! Turns out gummy bears are a great permeable membrane! The plain water bear got so big it nearly exploded. As soon as I picked it up after taking the After picture, its head fell off 😂. For older kids, this is a great conversation starter about concentrations of solutions and osmosis. For young kids like mine, it’s just neat to see the salt bear shrink and the plain water bear get enormous! No eating the bears that were soaking in the solutions...they’ll be laden with bacteria. 😖 #sciencechickies#sciencewithkids#scienceathome#osmosis

We are taking a quick break from our human body studies to play with rainbows in celebration of St. Patricks Day. • While playing with water is fun, making your own colored water is even better. The kids played for a long time, creating colors, mixing colors, and adding glitter. The setup was easy peasy and the exploration that happened was priceless! The gold isn’t always at the end of the rainbow, it’s in the little minds as they explore. • SUPPLIES: - bleeding tissue paper - gold glitter - water - plastic containers - droppers - stirrers • If you haven’t tried bleeding tissue paper yet it’s a must try. Unfortunately you can’t use just any tissue paper. It must be specifically bleeding tissue paper. We bought ours from @discountschoolsupply • As for the amazing plastic lab supplies (flasks, large test tubes, droppers), those are from @learningresources and they are our favorite!! • PRESCHOOL PROMPTS: what do you think will happen when we add a piece of the paper to water? What color do you expect it to turn? If you add more of the same color paper what do you think will happen? Now what if you add a second color, what color will you see? • SKILLS: color recognition, color shades, color mixing, curiosity stimulation, fine motor, gross motor • #sensoryscience#colormixing#waterplay#preschoolscience#learningathome#everydayplayhacks#tinyn3rds#teachingscience#earlylearning#teachingathome#homeschooling#messyplay#scienceathome#learningathome#raisingcuriouskids#letthemmakemesses#steam#stem#homeschoolblog#homeeducator#childledlearning#homeschoolcollective#tagfromtheheart#messyplayideas#letthemexplore#getcreativewith#scienceandart#scienceforkids#simplescience#earlylearning101

Next time your kiddo asks about planes or birds flying, just tell them "because of the Bernoulli Principle." Bernoulli's Principle states that as air moves around an object, it creates different pressures on that object. HEART DISSECTION Sorry if you’re squeamish but this today for me is what #homeeducation is really about. Last night whilst shopping in @morrisons I saw some lambs hearts reduced and thought they’d be perfect for dissection. Our super intelligent son absolutely blew me away with how quickly he learnt and retained the information he read online and transferred the knowledge to the actual dissection. But much more than this he was so kind and nurturing to his little brother, gently encouraging him to make these exciting discoveries too. Here he held the heart so his brother didn’t have to - and explained where and what they were probing. For me I also helped them to think about kitchen hygiene and safety. All this before 9am!

This weekend, our mini-experiments included the following questions, formulated by our very young scientist himself: - Are embers hot enough to melt an ice cube? - Where will the ice go if we leave it for very long? Will it become so hot it turns into vapour? What will be left at the bottom of the tin cup? - Are embers hot enough to bring water to a boil? Will there be bubbles? Will the glass bottle explode? - Can salt cook? Can sugar cook? Can salt burn? Can sugar burn? Can salt melt? What is caramel? What happens if caramel gets really hot? His favourite bit was definitely to observe the difference between salt and sugar and how the sugar started melting really quickly, turned all brown, bubbled up and then burned and turned all black, while nothing much was happening to the salt. --- A word of warning: caramel gets really hot and sticky, which can cause nasty burns. Adult supervision required. :-)

• U N S T R U C T U R E D P L A Y • Why not incorporate two things into one during unstructured play? Like introducing animals to the familiar magnatiles. Or building fences around groups of animals to categorise them based on their habitats eg land or sea or both in the case of amphibians. Unknowingly we can learn about animal habitats such as when Miss3 asked me where to put turtles since turtles can live on both land and in water. Anything is possible during unstructured play aka open ended play, with no specific learning objectives. I always look forward to "surprises" that Miss3 will come out with through her own perspective. . . . . . . #preschoolactivities#teachingpreschoolers#funplay#funlearning#kidsatplay#playmatters#sgmum#momsofinstagram#singapore#teachermum#iteachtoo#momswhoteach#playbasedlearning#outdoorlearning#loveforlearning#loveforreading#readingmatters#readdaily#ridewidely#raisingreaders#raisingdaughters#earlyliteracy#earlynumeracy#earlylearning#earlychildhood#playathome#playoutdoors#learningiseverwhere#homelearningideas#scienceathome

This is a fun project to create a rainbow-colored water by using different sugar densities water. Supplies: Four glasses food coloring sugar water spoon Bottle Method: -Starting with the second glass (the first will be only water) add increasing amounts of sugar: one teaspoon in the second glass, two teaspoons in the third, three in the fourth. -Add different colored food dye to each. -Fill the four glasses to the top with water and Stir until sugar dissolves. -Pour the highest density ( with maximum amount of sugar) water in the bottle first. -Then slowly add the second highest density water into it. Then third density and at the end add the plain water. -You should see the color layer into a rainbow. The colored water won’t mix due to differences in the sugar densities in it. .. ... ..... #scienceathome#scienceeducation#stemeducation#scienceathome#stem#scienceforkids#stemlearning#stemforkids#learningathome#stemeducationforkids#kitchenscience#activitiesforkids#kindergarten#humanbody#sugar#scienceinfun#learningisfun#scienceeducation#earlylearning#earlychildhoodeducation#preschoolers#mommyblogger#springbreakscience#weekendlearning#steam#stemactivities#steamactivities#steameducation#coloredwater#rainbowwater#physics#density

Today was fun with our “snot” experiment. The girls learned why we have snot, even though it’s gross. Check out my stories for their experience. This good time comes after days of being “off” for my girls. Our field trip last week to the aquarium was great, but by evening all went south and we have been in a state of dysregulations for days. I have no idea what triggered it this time, and to be honest it’s been wearing on me this weekend. Daylight savings didn’t help us either. Any other moms feel me on that one? Being able to have a relatively calm day today has been a nice reprieve. We did our experiment, read a chapter in the Little House Series, watched two shows of Little House On The Prairie, and had lots of outdoor creative play. Hoping tonight will end well. We live moment by moment around here and never know what may come our way. . . . #scienceathome#homeschool#fasd#learningcanbefun#fetalalcoholspectrumdisordermom#dysregulation#fasdmom#childhoodtrauma#traumamama#homeschoolmom#homeschoolmomlife#staticencephalopathy

Not everything is as it first appears.🤔 This Crown of Thorns plant is a euphorbia, related to poinsettias. The colorful "petals" are actually modified leaves (cyathophylls). The tiny flowers are inside the center of these bracts.👀🔎 At the end of the day, it's sometimes easier to say they are pretty flowers and enjoy. But you COULD say, "What cute cyathophylls!" next time.🤩 📚 📚 📚 #CrownOfThorns#euphorbia#EuphorbiaMilii#MorphologyMonday#tamawi#TamaraHorne#AuthorsOfInstagram#CultivatingWonder#CultivatingCuriosities#HomeschoolScience#ScienceAtHome#KidsGardening#FloweringPlant#FloweringPlants#botanical#RedFlower#FlowerOfTheDay#FlowersOfInstagram#MyDailyFlower#InstaFlower#flowersgram

Exploring with magnets is like igniting magic into a kid's eye
• M A G N E T S • Exploring with magnets is like igniting magic into a kid's eyes. We have inevitably worked with magnets in some ways or another such as fridge magnets, magnetic alphabets, button magnets, magnatiles etc. Miss3 would exclaim "magnet" whenever she was encountered with the invisible force of magnets be it attraction or repulsion during her random play. . So today I purposefully introduced the concept of magnets to Miss3 by giving her the magnetic bar (in yellow) and some randomly scattered rainbow paper clips (which come in different shapes and colours, a bonus!). Almost immediately, she placed the magnet bar near the paper clips and upon seeing many paper clips got attracted to the magnet bar, she squealed in excitement! She was simply in awed at the simple set up and went on to attract as many paper clips as possible using the magnet bar. It was just beautiful to watch her explore on her own. Saving other possible ideas to explore magnets for some other time.

Remember when we discovered that iron-fortified cereal was magnetic? What if there was a way to get the iron out of the cereal? We did just that in our very first extraction! (Scroll to see pics and vids, but please excuse the kitchen...mini reno going on here!) All we needed was 1/4 box of cereal, water, and a blender. Whizz it up until the cereal and water make a uniform brown slurry. Then stick your neodymium magnet in a plastic bag and swirl it around - it’s a messy job! Be prepared to be amazed...the black iron particles will be stuck to the bag! To isolate, gently rinse the bag with water to clean off the cereal, and remove the magnet from the bag. Catch the iron filings on a white sheet of paper or a napkin. #scienceathome#sciencechickies#sciencewithkids

EVERYDAY SCIENCE
Why? How? What if?
We experience the magic of science so many
EVERYDAY SCIENCE Why? How? What if? We experience the magic of science so many times a day without even thinking about it. To us it is just routine. Part of our everyday life. Very quickly it also becomes routine to a child and then the ‘magic’ is lost and so is a very easy way of absorbing basic science concepts. Things that kids often find boring in a classroom situation at school when introduced at an early age in a 1:1 situation, they are fascinating! It’s usually the child who asks ‘why?’ but sometimes it’s good to turn the tables! There’s no need to know the answer either! Brainstorming.Throwing out suggestions, ideas, even funny and silly ones makes learning fun and motivates children to want to find out more. Examining a dry fresh teabag partly answers the question and is probably sufficient for toddlers. For older children further answers can be found together by watching an age appropriate animation or video on the internet. WHAT IF? Prediction is a vital and a fun part of science. It gives us an opportunity to experiment. To investigate and to test out our theories. What if we used cold water? What do you think would happen? How would it be different? Then try and find out! I haven’t got the answers on my channel but I have made quite a few programmes to introduce very young children to the magic of science. Try them and if you enjoy please subscribe to my channel. Everything is free. More ideas every day this week. #jumblehouse#scienceforkids#scienceforkidsandparents#homescience#scienceathome#homesciencetools#everydayscience#sciencehappenseveryday#earlylearningactivities#underfives#instakids#instascience#learningvideosforkids#kidslearningvideos#toddlerlearningactivities#toddlerlearning#toddlerlearningfun#learnwithmom#learnwithmummy#learningthroughplay#learningthroughplaying#playingislearning#playingisbelieving#parentsmagazine#learningbydoing#sciencefortoddlers

This easy lesson plan is a fun, STEAM based exploration that encourages children to study their world around them. Search For Seeds How can we tell the difference between a fruit and a vegetable? Fruits and vegetables both come from plants, but the secret is that they are different parts of the plant, and one has seeds, the other doesn't. Fruits grow from the ovaries of flowers of plants. Fruits contain seeds unlike vegetables. The other parts of the plant (like the stems, roots, leaves) grow into vegetables. Are strawberries are real berries? Where do the seeds of bananas go? Are tomatoes, bell peppers , string beans and eggplants are vegetables or fruits? We explored all these questions and got our answers. Please check my Facebook blog page ‘Love My Game ‘ to find the answers.
