Hijacked @homegrownjoan - #KitchenScrapGardening Using discarded tops and bottoms of foods, you can regrow many of the organic foods you spent hard-earned money on. Old garlic starting to sprout can be regrown, simply but removing the peel and placing in water until the roots grow long. They can be transplanted outdoors in late April for our #gardenZone. PROTIP: Search your own garden zone to learn when itms best to plant seeds and seedlings outdoors * -The base of celery can be added to water to grow roots that will be ready for transplanting outdoors as well. Same for the bottom of #GreenOnions and the bottoms of large white & yellow onions. Those roots will regrow! We’ve regrown Romaine lettuces from the base, simply by placing in water and letting new roots grow! We do the same with the tops of #Beets! Peep the pics in the post to see some of the foods we regrew from scraps! ***Make sure you keep the water line at the base of the discarded scrap- we don’t want to drown them, just enough to allow the roots to grow. Keep them elevated in water so the roots have room to grow in the glass*** Get the kids involved! They love #KitchenScience💚 *I change the water once a week to cut down on risks of bacteria growing! #SciComm#ScienceKids And we love to save money on organic foods! **Search the hashtag: #NewOrganicGardenersSeries for info on organic gardening💚

We’ve had a few messages asking when the ‘Science Communicator’ will be restocked - they have been ordered, but they won’t be in the shop for a few weeks. For now we only have seconds available, these are pins that have little imperfections - perfect for if you plan on pinning it to a backpack where it’ll get bashed about a bit anyway. These are only £2 too! If you’d like to purchase one, just head to the ‘surprise seconds’ listing on Etsy, and leave a note requesting a ‘Science Communicator’ seconds pin 💛

”What are your favourite things to buy (i.e. books, tv shows, experiences or a good meal)? What if someone told you that your buying behaviour can be explained by evolution principles? . This book aims to bring an evolutionary perspective to consumer behaviour and it is a must read! For those who don’t know evolutionary psychology attempts to explain psychological traits as adaptations/biological mechanisms. Many have seen the International Space Station glide across the dark sky in the hours after sunset or before sunrise while it is still lit by the sun.  For most locations, visible passes occur at least every few days and sometimes more than once per night. 🔭🔭 . You can check it online and there as apps available for it too, you can predict where it's going to be, when and if any transit is occurring.

Old World vs New World tarantulas...what’s the difference?

As the name implies
Old World vs New World tarantulas...what’s the difference? 🕷 As the name implies, Old World tarantulas are from the Eastern hemisphere, the “Old World”, including Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. They are characteristically skittish, fast and defensive, with venom far more potent than that of the New World tarantulas. Unlike most New World tarantulas, they lack urticating hairs and therefor tend to rely on biting as their main method of defense. For these reasons, I typically do not recommend Old World species for beginners in the tarantula hobby. 🕷 Tarantula venom typically does not cause serious effects and most bites are “dry”, or without venom, and are used as a warning to say “leave me alone”! However, because Old World venom is more potent, it can sometimes require hospitalization. Symptoms include localized pain and swelling, exhaustion, muscle cramping, labored breathing and fever that can last for several days. The genus Poecilotheria is reported to have some of the most potent venom in the tarantula world...and that’s the genus that Poe, my Poecilotheria regalis, belongs to! 🕷 Poe here is uncharacteristically calm for an old world tarantula and cooperates easily when I handle him. When he doesn’t want to be handled, he makes it clear by first attempting to run away. At this point, I wouldn’t push to hold him. However, if I were to, his next line of defense would be to make himself appear larger by spreading his legs and chelicerae (fangs) apart. He would then rear back on his hind legs, extending his forelegs upward to flash his warning coloration — beautiful yellows and iridescent greens — on the underside of his forelegs. This is his way of saying “back off!”. Pushing the tarantula past this point is asking to be bitten. 🕷 This week, I’ll be providing multiple Tarantula 101 posts to educate my followers on the basics of tarantula keeping. Stay tuned for a post about new worlds coming soon!!

They’re awake!! . I’ve returned to the USA & it’s still a bit too cold for most herps here in northern Illinois... BUT yesterday I found my first salamander of the year 😊 . This is a spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum). Salamanders spend a lot of their time under logs near ephemeral (seasonal/temporary) ponds. When they aren’t under logs, they are in the water, trying to breed with other manders.

Happy Sunday and welcome to Ubehebe Crater, located in Death Valley National Park . Ubehebe Crater is a volcanic crater approximately 1/2 mile wide and over 500 feet deep. I GOT NEW HAIR 💁🏼‍♀️ Ok now I’ve got your attention, let’s talk about cervical screening 🤗 It’s been in the news a lot recently in the UK, because shockingly in some parts women between 18-49 being tested every 3 years has dropped below 50%!! . Let’s be clear- 2,600 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 700 die from the disease per year. By getting a cervical screen regularly you have a chance of catching those naughty cells early and potentially stopping the growth and spread of the cancer. Now they are also testing your cells for presence of the HPV virus 🦠 as some strains are known to cause cervical cells to become abnormal. So you are getting a 2-4-1 test there ladies! . So why on Earth are women not going for their tests?! The most common cause is embarrassment, being scared it will hurt or just forgetting. LADIES let me tell you, I had my test around a month ago and it 👏🏼 was 👏🏼 fine 👏🏼 Obviously getting your vagina out for a random stranger is not the funnest thing ever (👀) BUT these nurses do it ALL THE TIME and in my experience they are always very comforting and supportive. Yes, it is slightly uncomfortable but not painful, I promise!! After all, a few minutes of uncomfortableness is better than a potential lifetime of cancer, right?! . . On a good note, the government are now trying new ways of advertising cervical screening to women to lessen the embarrassment/fear factor. One of those is not using the phrase “smear test” - which was only used because in the past cervical cells were smeared on to slides for testing. Now, they suspend them in liquid, so no smear involved! Smear is definitely not the most pleasant of words (almost as bad as moist *shudder*), so this is a move in the right direction. . So should you be tested?! YES if you are between the ages of 25-64. How often? Every 3 years until the age of 49, and then every 5 years after that. SORT IT OUT LADIES AND BOOK YOUR TEST TODAY 😘

It is still far from being finished but it is starting to get there. It is a scene from te early Triassic seas of China. A couple of ichthyosauriforms: Cartorhynchus and Sclerocormus, which although were not exactly contemporaneous they could have been since they lived in the same general area, relatively close to each other in geological time. I have done 2 previous versions of this reconstruction but I have not been happy with it. Sunday thoughts on motivation ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last week I received an interesting question about how I am able to maintain my motivation all of the time. I thought this question should be addressed in a feed post because the truth is that no one is constantly motivated all of the time! It constantly fluctuates and being forced to take a break from work this week due to a physical illness has got me thinking about my motivation to get back to work! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we lack motivation we start looking for sources of inspiration to motivate us to regain that focus and energy. Personally, I needed to be physically forced to take a break, in order to have new motivation to get back to work. However, if you’re struggling with the motivation to study your subjects the best advice I can give you is to intrinsically enjoy what you’re learning. If you can trick your brain into thinking that what you need to study is interesting or new information that you didn’t know before, it can help you with finding the motivation to continue! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we lack motivation we start looking for sources of inspiration to motivate us to regain that focus and energy. It’s different for everyone and what works for me may not necessarily work for you! I do hope that this helps to understand that there are times when I lack motivation myself! I hope you’ve all enjoyed this post and had a great weekend!💕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ // #eveincollege#learnandgrow#studying#studygram#studyblr#studyblogger#productivity#studyspo#studyinspiration#juniorincollege#studymotivation#studyhard#studyblrsquad#studynotes#studytime#university#psychology#girlboss#academiceve#womeninstem#stem#neuroscience#scicomm#womenwhoscience //

A busy honey bee (Apis sp.) pollinating wild rosemary (Conradina canescens) 🐝🌿

A busy honey bee (Apis sp.) pollinating wild rosemary (Conradina canescens) 🐝🌿 - A risk assessment by Fulton et al. (2019) of pesticide exposure and land use effects on honey bees indicated that anthropogenic pressures could cause bees to utilize less than favorable habitats, including pasture, agricultural, and urban landscapes. This increases their exposure to household and agricultural pesticides which end up in their hive's wax. Larval and adult bees are then exposed to these pesticides. - Wild bees are also being pressured by managed honey bee populations. They continue to compete against the managed bees for resources (Alaux et al., 2019). Plant communities in wild bee ranges can also be altered by managed bees due to different targeted flora. However, both wild and managed honeybees can affect other pollinators by competing for nesting locations and pollen, and they can increase pollination of exotic weeds. - What is your take on the current bee crisis? Repost from @mcgilloss using @RepostRegramApp - Why do we have dimples? 😁 Orlando Bloom might have the nicest dimples around, but glance at his chin and you’ll notice a lack of a dent. Look at Demi Lovato’s chin though and you’ll see a cleft, almost like an indent there. How can somebody have one kind of dimple but not the other? And what causes dimples in the first place? Cheek dimples are the result of a muscle in the cheek, the zygomaticus major, splitting in two. Before birth this muscle can split into a superior bundle that is positioned above the corner of the mouth, and an inferior bundle, below the corner of the mouth. This splitting creates a hammock sort of effect where skin can hang in slightly between the two bundles. When you smile, the muscles contract and the dimples are more prominent due to the increased skin tension. Chin dimples on the other hand, have nothing to do with muscles. Cleft chins, or butt chins are they’re colloquially called, are a result of an unfused jaw bone. The skin over the tiny gap is indented, creating the dimple. If you ever feel a cleft chin, you can actually feel the gap, but don’t worry, this anatomical feature is harmless. It is dominant genetically though, so your kids might face a few inevitable ‘butt face’ insults. - #demilovato#orlandobloom#dimples#smile#photo#science#genetics#cleftchin#dimple#unique#til#dyk#sciencememes#sciencecommunication#scicomm

#KitchenScrapGardening Using discarded tops and bottoms of foods, you can regrow many of the organic foods you spent hard-earned money on.

CHIMIRICORDI? #iostoconilpost#perugia#divulgazione#eventi#scicomm#chimica#edutainment

CLIMATE CHANGES ♻️ . For the series if scientists would pose as lifestyle influencers, I would like to show my new purchase from @amazonukonline and by far my best handbag: the helmet of my bike 🚲. . After the industrial revolution, the level of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere have been growing consinstently and the global temperature has increased ⬆️of 0.8 C since 1880. Sounds like a small number but the effects are tragic (as I am sure everyone can notice). Everyone knows about carbon dioxide, but there's a far more dangerous gas that gets relisealed and none really talks about: methane. Methane absorbs heat 🌝much more strongly than carbon dioxide due to its chemical structure. This gas is a side product of animal farming and it has been estimated that a single cow🐂 emitts aroung 500 kg of methane every day!. . I personally take this issue very seriuosly and decided to avoid travelling by car, Do you really need to take the car to move for less than a mile? I bought my sendhand bike for £35 💸on gumtree.co.ukand the guy I bought it from delivered it on my doorstep a few hours after I called him. . I don't eat meat anymore🚫. One of my new year resolution was to stop eating meat for good. I have to say that this is an easy step in the UK because there are loads of alternatives and meat substitutions, such as ver sausages, chcicken nuggets, burgers, mince etc (check the brand @quorn. You really don't eat meat every day. According to the traditional Mediterrean diet🏖, you shoul eat meat once a month really. On top of an ecofriendly choice, avoind eating read meat is also a benefit for your health. Recent studies showed that red meat is becoming one of the major cause of carcer☣. . Changing habits doesn't happen overnight but are you willing to try? Let me know in a comment below! . Prof. Hadiyah-Nicole Green began her academic career in physics, and turned her attention to treating cancer after seeing witnessing the ravages of chemotherapy first-hand. Her research focuses inserting nanoparticles into cancer cells while avoiding surrounding healthy cells and she is currently raising funds for clinical trials, all while teaching @morehouseschoolofmedicine and continuing a busy schedule of public speaking for her foundation, @weareoralee. . Notably, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green developed a cancer treatment that uses lasers and nanotechnology to kill cancer in mice in just 15 days after a single 10-minute treatment with no observable side effects. She founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, to raise the funding for human clinical trials so this treatment can be made affordable for everyone. Dr. Green has intertwined her life’s purpose into the mission of the organization: to change the way cancer is treated and reduce the suffering of cancer patients by providing a treatment that is accessible, affordable, and effective. Moving north from the famous Horsehead Nebula, we find a real gem of an object which is largely overlooked by us emission nebula addicted astrophotographers. M78 is a complex emission nebula, with plenty of dust to add texture, new stars being formed, and exotic objects enough to satisfy the most curious of us. It consists of two lobes, which seem to erupt from a swirling complex of very thick cosmic dust. They glow blue with light from their almost-visible blue supergiants by the same mechanism that makes our sky blue: blue light, with its shorter wavelength, is preferentially scattered, leaving the longer wavelengths to pass through relatively unaffected. In our sky, our sunsets are red, orange, and yellow -because- our sky is blue. M78 shows both effects, too. The nebulosity to the far left of the image is deeply reddened by intervening dust, that has scattered the blue light from our line of sight. This dust seems to form a river, splitting the larger lobe in two, creating one of the most compelling scenes in our sky. This river of dust can be traced all the way to the Horsehead region. The object at the left of the image, with the beautiful red streak at 2 o'clock, is a Herbig-Haro object. We'll have a better look at some of those a couple of posts from now. Meanwhile, go out and have a look at M78, or take a picture of it. It's VERY photogenic, and feels neglected because of its celebrity neighbors! #astronomy#astrophotography#scicomm#deepsky#M78#reflectionnebula#stars#beautyallaround

Let's talk perks of being a Biomedical Engineering Student👩‍🔬! 😊 Yesterday I came of my bike trying to take a corner too tight, (at low speed too 🤦🏽‍♀️). My bike (125cc Symphony Wolf), fell onto my foot, which was twisted underneath. (Its ok. Dont worry. Not anything debilitating). I got.up, picked the bike up, and rode home. ___ My degree thus far has focussed on bone tissue engineering, with development of a treatment for low 🦴 density and fracture healing. So, although not medically trained, I've learned enough to listen to how my body is responding to the trauma, and to identify to an acceptable level, if immediate care is required. I could still walk, a bit, but probs not broke, so rest and elevate, apply compression, see how it is in the morning. __ But I (begrudgingly) was taken to A&E.🤦🏽‍♀️ and now im on crutches for a week, woth soft tissue damage, and have to replan all my experiments 🤬..... but I have my best doggo for company 🥰 ___ Perk 1. Medical Staff always respond so positively to me when they learn my degree. They allow me to ask questions and I get varied clinical perspective for the development of my device. Perk 2 I get to see my own xrays, and have a 101 Anatomy lesson with literature suggestions! Perk 3. I dont worry as much. Nb: I've spent a lot of time in hospital with my 4 children. 2 have aspergers, one has juvenile osteoporosis. ___ #nuttegg#motobikeaccident#biology#musculoskeletalsystem#cellbiology#anatomy#medicine#xraystudent#biologystudents#musculoskeletal#doctor#orthopedictrauma#motorbike#gradlife#humanbiology#phdstudentlife#musculoskeletalpain#xray#Osteoporosis#biomedicalengineering#goldenretriever#scicomm#shecandoboth#clincalresearch

⭐What is the most difficult to make?⁣ .⁣ .⁣ I just finished working on a #DodoBird (Raphus cucullatus) - an animal that combines TWO of my weak points: birds and #extinct animals, like dinosaurs. A quick scroll through my gallery and you may notice that there is an overall absence in these two subjects.⁣ .⁣ .⁣ Birds give me a lot of trouble because I still haven't figured out how to 'do' feathers in this medium. I get caught up asking myself how much emphasis I need on the feathers and tend to over or under do it every single time.🤦‍♀️⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #ExtinctAnimals come with a different set of challenges. Usually, you need some degree of imagination with things like posture, gait, and skin. Since there aren't any high-quality video or photo references around, I'm often forced to resort to historic artwork, scientific findings, or an educated guess. Illustrations like these tend to be more involved because there's a lot of time spent on reading, observing, and thinking. Homework is often the last thing I'm looking for at the end of my day!😫⁣ .⁣ .⁣ (In response to #MarchMeetTheMaker - Prompt 29).⁣ .⁣ .⁣ ---⁣ #illustratenow#ornithology#extinction#MeetTheMaker#MeetTheArtist#birdart#sciart#scicomm#digitalartwork#krita#blackandwhiteart#naturalhistory#biodiversity#wildlifeconservation#monochromeart#greyscale#crosshatching#wildlifeart#drawingsketch#wildlifelovers#extinctbirds#drawingskills#iloveanimals#dodo#inkillustration#birds_adored

Researchers Identify How Metabolites Target Brain-Homing Immune Cells in the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. The discovery could lead to novel, more specific, and more effective MS therapies and a better understanding of how the disease develops. SIGNIFICANCE: "Therapeutically active metabolites have implications for the treatment of not only multiple sclerosis but also other autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, which involve the same type of T cells,” said Achilles Ntranos, lead author of the paper and a physician and neuroimmunology fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital whose work is supported by the Leon Levy Foundation and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes. “Understanding the epigenetic effect of metabolites on the immune system will help us develop several novel strategies for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, which could help patients and physicians achieve better clinical outcomes.” Credit: ASRC News, Neuroscience initiatives. #sciencelover#researcher#article#publication#scicomm#thescicommunity#womeninstem#womendoingscience#theaddictivebrain#immunesystem#immunology#neuroscience#biology#lifescience#brain#patient#help#tcell#disease#clinical#physician#therapy#sciencenews#scienceresearch#instascience

Leave no one behind... and leave no lake behind! New Zealand is covered with lakes, over 3,800 of them! They represent 1.3% of the land area!  The health of our lakes is central to our environmental, economic and cultural well-being. They are home to our unique and treasured native species such as tuna (eels), kākahi (freshwater mussels), and kōura (freshwater crayfish), and many more species. But the health of many lakes in New Zealand, particularly those in lowland environments, is decreasing. The Lakes380 project aims to better understand our lakes and contribute new knowledge to ensure they are valued and protected now and for generations to come. We've been fortunate enough to sample some of our most pristine lakes, and hope the sight of these beautiful pictures will inspire everyone to help protect and improve our precious water resources. 💦 Happy (belated) 2019 World Water Day everyone💦 #worldwaterday#worldwaterday2019#savewater#leavenoonebehind#takeaction#globalgoals#makeadifference#water#waterfacts#cleanwater#pristine#eutrophication#scienceproject#lakehealth#science#scicomm#research#sciencematters#lakewater#freshwaterscience#environmentalscience#nzlakes#nzlakehealth#ourlakeshealth#nz#newzealand#gnsscience#cawthron

Today, on the 24.3.1882 in Berlin Robert Koch announced that a bacterium is the cause of tuberculosis (TB) disease. Even 137 years later, TB remains the biggest killer of all infectious diseases and has devastating health, social and economic impact on people around the world. The UN set an ambitious goal to end TB by 2035. Even though TB might not affect you directly, you can help to achieve this aim by raising awareness about this global disease, by talking about it and ultimately holding your country’s decision makers and leaders accountable to their promises. If you want to learn more about TB, there is a beautiful new app EplainTB that comes in 37 languages and contains a lot of interesting information. The more people know about TB, the more focus and resources can be shifted toward ending it. . #endtb#itstimetoendtb#worldtbday2019#tuberculosis#worldtbday#infectiousdisease#TB#epidemiology#scicomm#awareness#itstime#endtbnow

Happy #nationalpuppyday 2019 (yes I know it was yesterday in Australia but it's still puppy day somewhere) 🐶🐾🐶🐾 . . Today I had dessert with @coylejoanne and then we took Saxon for a walk to the ferry terminal. I always try to have at least one day where I don't do science or even think about it. It's all about #worklifebalance . . Hope everyone is had/having a good weekend 🤗 . . . . . . . . The purpose of arc welding is to achieve coalescence (fusion) between initially separate pieces of metal. Fusion occurs when you have atomic bonding of the metals, which occurs when you have atomic cleanliness and atomic closeness. With arc welding, the atoms are bonded together with shared electrons to become one solid piece of metal. The video shows the tensile strength testing of a weld with 26 tons of force. The weld passed. Job weld-done. A proper weld produces a weld bead that is stronger than the parent material. Most welds fail just outside the fusion penetration area. Welding creates a temperature gradient from the weld material to the unaffected material. When this happens, you are actually annealing the metal, as the heat can be well above the annealing temperature. Once allowed to cool slowly, this heat treatment will increase ductility and reduce hardness. Follow @sunbot for more. -

On this day (1904): Famous American actress Joan Crawford was born. In the 1930s, Crawford's fame rivaled, and later outlasted, that of MGM colleagues Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo. Crawford often played hard-working young women who found romance and success. These characters and stories were well received by Depression-era audiences, and were popular with women. Crawford became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars, and one of the highest-paid women in the United States. #History#Hollywood#STEM#Bibliophile#writer#goodreads#books#sydney#montreal#toronto#paris#stockholm#oslo#zurich#tokyo#auckland#madrid#Melbourne#reading#bookstagram#technology#photography#nature#fashion#scicomm#sciencenerd#københavn#mexico#London#Helsinki

I managed 10days work free! Be as proud of me as I am! 😊 Well it's been 10 days (not that I'm counting or anything!), since I looked at anything remotely academic. Ok, there were a few internet pages/PDFs, but browsing doesn't count, 'cos if I was studying, I would have classed that as procrastination. Being at home is supposed to be a relaxing experience, time to give your brain a rest I (or as I understand it, feel the synaptic connections break, and wither away, increasing my already known 30% risk factor of developing Alzheimer's, thanks 23&Me for that nugget). - Ok, slightly dramatic, I know, but I feel like I'm on a come down. I need to use my mind. Or at least have intelligent conversation, other than Lego and kid stuff! Synapses (of which there are trillions- although I'm sure I now only have billions) provide the connecting junctions between your brain cells (of which there are billions, of which I'm sure there is a mangnitude many less now), and allows cells to communicate with one another for proper functioning. At the end of the semester, my Supervisor gave me a thesis to read with content relevant to some future work I would be doing. At the time I was not completely impressed, but right now, I am so grateful! . . Fun fact: Synapse was coined 121 years ago by Charles Sherrington and first used in a Vol 3 Edition of Textbook of Physiology. Etymology: Greek sunapsis, from sun-‘together’ + hapsis ‘joining’, from haptein ‘to join’. . _____ #Nuttegg#etymology#biochemistry#motivation#studying#phdlife#biology ) #books#logophile#mumlife#studygram#thesis#dissertation#procrastination#unilife#phdmum#research#medical#lego#scicomm#science#research#synapse#bibliophile#unilife#biochemistry#regenmed
