#Repost@anetek3001 • • • • • #Repost@biswaranjan_br with @get_repost ・・・ Reposted from @amivitale - I am proud to share this deeply touching film ‘KIFARU’ @kifaruthefilm, a feature doc film on the incredible people who are protecting the last northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in #Kenya. It was made by my friends @ragtagtribe and @thatguyhambone and follows the lives of two young, Kenyan recruits that join @olpejeta rhino caretaker unit, as they care for and protect Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, and the last two females. With the northern white rhino on the brink of extinction, the two ranger recruits are mentored by a seasoned elder with an unorthodox approach. Spanning over the course of the recruits’ first four years on the job, ‘KIFARU’ allows viewers to experience the joys and pitfalls of conservation firsthand through the lens of the men that look into the eyes of extinction on a daily basis. To learn more about where you can see it, follow @kifaruthefilm@ragtagtribe@thatguyhambone, @jemu_mwenda@wachira.joseph and @olpejeta I am also offering a chance to win a trip to @olpejeta to meet these extraordinary people and the animals they work so hard to protect at omaze.com/rhinos (link in profile). amivitale Photo by @amivitale. Guards watch over Sudan, the last known male Northern white rhino, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in northern Kenya before he passed away. He and three rhinos, were airlifted from @safari_park_dvur_kralove in the Czech Republic in 2009, in the hopes that being in their native habitat and climate would encourage them to mate. Today, Najin and Fatu, are the last Northern white rhinos alive on the planet. People imagine wildlife roaming freely on the open plains of Africa but this is what it looks like today. Because of poaching and the value of their horns, they have to be guarded around the clock by heavily militarized men. The visual of this is so striking compared to the images we imagine from even just a few decades ago. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals Sudan lived a long, healthy life and died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. He has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF. @nrt_kenya@lewa_wildlife@tusk_org@kenyawildlifeservice@thephotosociety@natgeo@nature_org@nature_africa@safari_park_dvur_kralove#LastManStanding#SudanForever#WorthMoreAlive#OlPejetaRhinos#NorthernWhiteRhinos#protectrhinos#DontLetThemDisappear#rhions#saverhinos#stoppoaching#kenya#northernkenya#africa#everydayafrica#photojournalism#amivitale@nikonusa#nikonusa#nikonlove#wile#wildlife#wildkenya

Last week, I made a heartbreaking journey back to Kenya to say goodbye to Sudan, the world's LAST male northern white rhino alive on the planet. Sudan lived a long and good life and he was surrounded by love, with the people who committed their lives to protecting him, like those at @olpejeta and the Dvůr Králové Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove). Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, but if there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals. Visit @amivitale to learn ways we can support @olpejeta with my photography. The plight of wildlife and the conflict between poachers and increasingly militarized rangers has received much-needed attention. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars, and the incredible work being done to strengthen them. We often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities. Their efforts are ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life. My hope is that Sudan’s legacy serves as a catalyst to awaken humanity to this reality. @nrt_kenya@kenyawildlifeservice@thephotosociety@natgeo@nature_org@nature_africa#LastManStanding#SudanForever#WorthMoreAlive#OlPejetaRhinos#NorthernWhiteRhinos#protectrhinos#DontLetThemDisappear#rhions#saverhinos#stoppoaching#kenya#northernkenya#africa#everydayafrica#photojournalism#amivitale

#Repost@amivitale with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Jan Stejskal from Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) comforts Sudan as he takes his last breath. Moments before he died, Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him and giving him the good life he enjoyed. There were the directors and people from the Dvůr Králové Zoo, staffers and his six dedicated keepers from Ol Pejeta, who spent more time with him than their own children. Veterinarians and other people from Kenya Wildlife Services were present as well. Most of them had been crying for days. The sky opened up. Rain poured down and he perked up for a moment. When he died, it was silent except for one little go-away-bird chirping ‘go away, go away, go away.’ Poaching is not slowing down. It’s entirely possible, even likely, that if the killing continues, these rhinos—along with elephants and a host of lesser known plains animals—will be functionally extinct in our lifetime. I only hope that this will be a wake-up call. We can often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities themselves. Their efforts to preserve community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life. The last of his species :( #Repost@amivitale (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. #Repost@amivitale with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Fatu is one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, following the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino who died due to age related complications on March 19th at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta ) in Kenya. Fatu and her mother Najin are the last of the species remaining in the world and may hold the keys to saving the entire species. Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, though scientists are considering other options involving Fatu and Najin, including stem cell procedures and harvesting eggs. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals. I have launched a print sale with a choice of two images, an image of one of the final moments of Sudan and this one of Fatu, Sudan's granddaughter and one of the last two surviving female northern white rhino on the savannah. I am donating 100% of the proceeds to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures, including Fatu and Najin. In 2017, I visited Mosi Oa Tunya National Park in Zambia. I saw two black rhinoceros guarded 24 hours by a group of rangers. The Zambian government reintroduced several rhinoceros from South Africa after the complete disappearance of the species in the country. Today, there are 14 rhinoceros in Zambia. In 1970, there were 12 000 rhinoceros in the country... #protectrhinos#dontletthemdisappear#rhions#saverhinos#everydayafrica#stoppoaching#natgeoyourshot#natgeo#natgeowild#africa#africatravel#zambia#rhinoceros#stopbraconnage

Credit to @amivitale - Photo by @amivitale. Fatu, one of the last two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, nuzzles her keeper, James Mwenda, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta). Fatu is the granddaughter of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet passed away on March 19th due to age related complications. I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. Visit the link in my profile to learn more and purchase a print. We must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals. “Humanity has brought the northern white rhino to the edge of extinction because it has slaughtered the animal for its horn,” said project scientist Jan Stejskal, a conservation researcher based at (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. “We have a duty to try to save it, no matter how hard that is going to be.” Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science. The IVF plan involves creating embryos and implanting them in surrogate mothers from a closely related sub-species, the southern white rhino, which is not endangered. Whether science can save the species is unknown but my hope is that Sudan's legacy can be a HUGE wake up call for all of us. We can all make impacts in our own small ways for a world of co existence. #Repost@natgeo (@get_repost) ・・・ Last week, I made a heartbreaking journey back to Kenya to say goodbye to Sudan, the world's LAST male northern white rhino alive on the planet. Today, I am sharing with you a photo of one of the last two remaining northern white rhinos on the planet at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta), a direct descendent of Sudan.

This is what it takes to keep the last two northern white rhinos alive. Kenyans
This is what it takes to keep the last two northern white rhinos alive. Kenyans put their lives between poachers and hunters, and the last rhinos. God love be these heroes. They alone are not enough - we need a paradigm shift around human and animal conflict. We just can't take all the land and all the resources and leave nature nothing. Regrann from @amivitale - Photo by @amivitale. Sudan passed away last week. This is an actual extinction of a species. #Repost@amivitale (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals Joseph Wachira, (@wachira.joseph) 26 comforts Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away March 19, 2018 in northern Kenya. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralove in the #Czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. #Repost@amivitale with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. "Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind.” RIP Sudan, the last male white rhino in the world. 😢 "Zachariah Mutai comforts Sudan, the last living male northern white rhino moments before he passed away.
