This activity was brilliant to show survival of the fittest! We put lots of red and green bits of wool on the field (worms/caterpillars or whatever you like!). The children were ‘birds’ and had 30 seconds to see how many ‘worms’ they could collect. We counted how many red and how many green. They all had significantly more red than green which was a brilliant example of how animals have evolved to be camouflaged through survival of the fittest and these genes being inherited by offspring. This activity modelled it so well! What are your EYFS pupils doing to mark #BSW19? Last year, people on the island of Lamu in Kenya collected plastic litter washed up on the beaches. The plastic was then shredded into millions of pieces, washed, and melted down to make the shapes for sections of a boat. ⠀ ⠀ The boat has sailed on a journey along the East African coast with local people on board sharing their message about clearing plastic from beaches with other communities. What could your pupils make from plastic litter? Watch our archive EYFS News video to find out more.⠀ ⠀ Find it: Espresso > EYFS > News > Recycled plastic boat sets sail⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #BSW19#recycling#plasticpollutionsolutions#PrimaryScience#eyfs#DiscoveryEducationEspresso#teachersofinstagram

⚡️Science Flash Visual ⚡️ Did you know…? It’s not just insects that pollinate plants — birds and bats do, too!Over 300 species of fruit depend on bats for pollination. These fruits include: mangoes, bananas & guavas. The picture to shows a bat with its face covered in pollen. As this bat visits other flowers of the same species, it will become a vector for pollination. [Source: Bat Conservation International website.]

A super fun science experiment. We did this in our Primary Science class, and I tried it with my favourite 3-year old. . All you need is some milk. Add food colouring and then drop a bit of detergent in the middle of the colour. What do you think will happen? (hint: the video shows the experiment not working 😂) Comment below 👇⬇️ . Concepts: different chemical properties, like attracts like, fatty acids, hypothesis/prediction, molecules, how detergent works. . It feels strange to post about #scienceweek because every week is science week in my world! But for primary schools this week is a godsend for our children, a whole week of hands-on, immersive, investigative, exciting science! I’ve spent the day volunteering at my local school starting with rocket launching with 60 Year 1s, followed by red cabbage indicator investigations with 60 year 4s and finishing off with my usual crazy science club and a few more rockets! The buzz around school is contagious, children are constantly telling me how much they love science and showing me things they have done at home... I’ve worked 11 days on the trot and 4 of them are completely voluntary, I’m exhausted but I’m so proud of this work, so happy to see these kids engaging with science and so glad I never gave up on making this stuff happen ❤️👌🏻🤗 #scienceisfun#lovemyjob#volunteer#britishscienceweek#science#scienceclub#primaryscience

Pollination! The children took on the role of the bee by sucking nectar (juice box) as they picked up pollen (cheese puffs) and then wiped their fingers on other petals.
