You know that feeling of exploring a new place or hopping in a car and hitting the road or landing in a new country where the air feels dramatically different, you don't speak the language, and your cell phone and money don't work? - I live for that feeling. - To me its the feeling of freedom and wildness and joy and sometimes a little bit of fear (the good kind!). And if there is one thing that I hope my work does for YOU its give you a little hint of that feeling of freedom too. - Here's the thing: I work in a space that ISN'T often associated with feelings of freedom. Wedding days? They're so often full of expectations and rules and anxiety. I want to change that narrative. I want you to know that you can get married in any damn way they choose - whether that's eloping in Iceland or having a tiny wedding in the Colorado mountains. I want you to know that its ok to embrace the feeling of the wind in your hair, the rain on your skin, and the dirt on your dress. - And I want you to know that a lot of the drive behind what I do isn't even really ABOUT weddings. I want you to feel empowered to make intentional decisions not just about how you're going to spend your wedding day but also about how you're going to spend EVERY day. And yeah, I do it in a super tiny and specific little arena of wedding and elopement photography but I believe that that same feeling of empowerment spills over into so many other things - our careers, our hobbies, our families, where we choose to live ... So when I post a bunch of photos of beautiful couples doing beautiful things in beautiful places please understand that what we're doing here is about SO much more than that. It's about helping people live their lives on their own terms, embracing the things that bring them joy, and setting the stage for many more important experiences and decisions in the future. - To me this photo embodies that feeling. A dirty dress blowing in the wind on a far flung beach in a foreign land. A day that two brave people took charge of their lives and said "THIS is what feels right to us. THIS is how we're doing this." Its the feeling I want you all to feel on your wedding day ...and every day after.

There are a lot of places on this gorgeous planet that are obvious items on my “must-visit” bucket list. The Atacama Desert of Chile honestly wasn’t on that list, but it should have been. Aside from being extraordinarily difficult to overstate this strange and bizarre landscape, it’s extra lovely to be here with my favorite travel crew. My brother + Kai and Dannielle (the delightful couple pictured here) know how to go with the flow and explore to the maximum degree. It’s been a while since I’ve been so utterly floored by a new place in the world, and I’ll most certainly be back ❤️

NO TRAVEL FEES for any 2019 elopements booked this year!! After doing a couple, and getting to see how special they are, I want to throw myself at the opportunity to help plan and capture even more of these. — ALSO I leave for Hawaii next week for an INSANE WEDDING, and lots of shoots, and to say I’m excited is an understatement.... also... to say I’m nervous is also an understatement. I have so many things to get done and not even close to enough time😂 looking for a friend to help motivate me to pack , all ears 😂

We hiked for miles to get here. We stayed out until the sun went down and a storm blew in, then camped overnight before heading back to town. Not to mention the 24+ hours of planes/buses/rental cars just to get here. There’s something about traveling to somewhere completely out of your norm, out of your comfort zone, to somewhere inspiring and remote that distills you down to a more honest version of yourself. There’s nothing but the mountains and the love you share with your partner. Places like these bring out the goodness in a story. The real, raw, mess that love is.

. Makeup de está hermosa novia: @raqueltorrensmakeup

Patagonia — where it can be sunny and windy and raining all at the same time. I’m so excited and a little sad to be sharing this last bit of our time in Patagonia from January. I feel so incredibly nostalgic lately for this place for some reason. I wrote a lot of thoughts about the area in this blog, as well as a lot of love for Caitlin & Tim who traveled all the way from the deep South in Florida to this infamous place to elope. It’s a good one. Link in bio & stories.

Standing among peaks like this is humbling to say the very least. When you can hear glaciers avalanching behind you, and see clouds swirling the mountains above you, and the surface of the lake whips with the wind. I’ve never experienced a place that comes even remotely close to how wild Patagonia is. It’s an experience of its own, which requires the utmost bravery and tolerance to grasp it. The southern tip of the world is not for the faint of heart.

They spent the week backpacking the famous W trek in Torres Del Paine and at the end of their trip, their family met them in Chile and they eloped at the lake behind their hotel. And not just any hotel, it’s @natgeo’s top 50 unique hotels in the world, and it did not disappoint. There really is nothing like eloping in Patagonia, passing guanacos, ostrich’s, and flamingoes on our way into the park. And to add a backpacking trip on the front end of an already epic trip - it reinforces everything I love about what I do. It’s the experience.

Been working on this one for weeks and I’m SO stoked to share. Kasey & Erich in Patagonia, the wildest place on earth. It’s taken forever for me to come up with any words to accompany these photos (because really, there are no words), but late last night after reminiscing on all that this trip was, I finally found the space in my brain to write some thoughts about it. If not now, then when? 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️ - I had been wanting to go to Banff, Canada (pictured here) for years. But I didn’t just want to go, I wanted to photograph a couple there to start expanding my portfolio. I KNEW I could make it happen even though I didn’t know how to find a couple willing to go with me and barely knew how to use my new camera gear I purchased two weeks before this trip. - I’ll share a favorite from the photos I took of the couple here tomorrow but for now, I share this with the encouragement to G O 💃🏼. Chase those dreams. Do the dang thing. How can you fail if you don’t try in the first place? I could have let fear or doubt stand in the way of us taking this trip but instead I said screw fear and I’m so glad I did. - Was this encouraging to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts. 10 things I loved about this day: 1. Waking up before sunrise to hike a grueling last ascent to the base of Fitz Roy 2. Seeing the most incredible sunrise of my life 3. Drinking coffee from a Nalgene waiting for the light to get just right 4. Wedding dress stuffed in a dry bag 5. Adri reading a quote from Bob Dylan as part of their ceremony, of course 6. The other hikers equally as stoked that this couple just eloped, giving them hugs and congratulations 7. Hiking out and seeing the insane fall colors for the first time, since we hiked in the dark 8. Ending the day in a field drinking beers and staring at the mountain we had just climbed 9. The fact that these two had never backpacked before but wanted to try for their elopement, and they killed it 10. Sitting outside our Airbnb altogether that night talking about how incredible that experience just was

I remember the first few emails with these two where they’d sent some photos of themselves—photos of them surfing and bungee jumping, a video that Erich had made of their recent travels. It was clear from their first email that these two live to experience the wild. Their story together is defined by their adventures, surfing remote waves in Bali, road tripping all over New Zealand, and backpacking up to an alpine lake in Patagonia. I love that their wedding was just a continuation of that, a symbol of a lifelong pursuit of wild places.

She loves it when he rubs her back, and is an evening routine for them, he even said it in his vows so.... I tried to capture it. What do you think?? Does anyone else enjoy portraiture as much as i do?? In case you don’t know exactly what portraiture is - it’s capturing a personality or emotion of a person in a creative way. Much different than photojournalism which limits the photographer in adjusting, “posing”, or influencing your subject in any way - it demands total authenticity. In portraiture, you can be creative, you can have a voice, it’s your version of what you see. @annigrahampresets

I had a video chat with these guys a couple days ago to show them the album I designed for them. This photo was (and will forever be!) on the last page of their album. - We all talked about how we had forgotten how much we loved this shot of them watching the sunset into the Atlantic from the beach in Iceland. We talked about how perfect of a way it was to end a perfect day. We talked about how you FORGET these moments until you see them again ... but how seeing the photos takes you right back to it. - At the end of the day I believe that THAT is what what I do is all about. Its not about making pretty pictures to post on Instagram or my website or Facebook. Its about giving people the best damn experience of their lives ... and having the photos be the thing that brings them right back to that moment. - I can't see this picture and NOT remember that day and what it felt like to be cold and wet and tired but also SO happy and grateful for this crazy ass life I live and the way it lets me connect with others. I can't speak for how they feel when they see it, but I like to think it takes THEM back to being cold and wet and tired and SO happy and grateful too. - What we do isn't about pretty pictures. Its about preserving the little moments that you tend to forget. Its about helping you (and me) remember what they FELT like.

I love people like these two. Who traveled from Florida to one of the most remote places, backpacked a whole bunch of steep miles, and said their vows under these infamous peaks. Their wedding dinner consisted of Backpacker’s Pantry dehydrated meals and a bottle of champagne they’d packed in from town. None of the fuss, just the things that were important to them. I think that’s how weddings should be.

522 38
There is a common misconception that elopements and photos of couples in beautiful places are more about the place than they are the people. Its one of the biggest criticisms I hear of the type of work that photographers like me do. -My knee jerk reaction is to say "that is NOT true". Instead I'm going to challenge that notion and say "ok .... and what if it is??". - I am a person who falls hard for places. I believe that places REALLY FREAKING MATTER. I always have. - The examples I could give you are numerous. I could tell you about the first time we visited Colorado and I spent the next 10 years of my life desperately trying to figure out how to move here. - I could tell you about how I studied in a tiny and remote fishing village in Canada for a semester in college ... and how I cried for the entire six hour bus ride back to civilization. I wasn't crying for the friends I would miss (many of whom are STILL in my life 20 years later) but for the place that would forever be a part of me. - I could tell you how much it hurt to leave the midwestern college town I had spent 10 years of my life in. I could tell you how I knew I'd miss the people but how, more than anything, I knew I would miss those quiet streets, the coffee shop I was a regular at, and the way the air smelled in spring. - I could go back to high school and tell you how I slept with a map under my bed and dreamed of leaving the safe, bland suburbs I had grown up in. - I could tell you the long list of places that I ache for today, the ones that will forever be a part of me and my story ... and the ones I have yet to set foot in but know will break my heart to leave. - Photography is a collaboration. Its you the couple and me the person holding the camera coming together and documenting what is important to us. And if what is important to us *is* places, if we're the kind of people who fall hard for rugged landscapes and feel them in our bones? Then those photos AREN'T just gratuitous flashy pictures of people on tops of mountains. They're photos of who you are and what you believe in and the outward expression of how you choose to get married. ❤️🙌

👋 Maddie Mae here! - Heading back from Patagonia today and I simply have no words (shocker, I know 😂). Patagonia is simply the WILDest place I have ever encountered in my life. Deciding to elope here is *not* for the faint of heart or for anyone who likes plans to go perfectly. - Bekka & Jess battled the wind and rain and crazy unpredicable fall weather and fought to say their vows in one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes I’ve seen. - And they got rewarded with a freaking REAL sunrise double rainbow 🌈 🌈 for their first look that was like nothing I’ve seen before. - What came to light so clearly to me this trip is that these little squares on this feed make all of this look like it’s 100% easy and fun—spoiler alert! It’s not 😂 Real adventuring takes effort and sometimes is a real sufferfest. 20 hours of flying each way, hiking in wedding clothes in 70km wind gusts, battling the cold and rain is not for everyone. - I am genuinely always SO inspired by couples who choose to get married this way—who choose to even on the day they get married to deepen their relationship by supporting each other through the hard stuff. - The view from the top is worth it folks 👏 - So much more to share from this trip and these two... but honestly am still choked up from the emotion of this day 💕💕💕🥰🥰🥰 - xx Maddie Mae - 👑: @stemandstone.crowns

👋Maddie Mae here!! - Flying back from Kauai today and can’t believe in just 4 days I’ll be back in this magical area of the world—Patagonia absolutely stole my heart in January with its Dr. Seuss mountains, crazy glacial blue water (yes, it really is that color), black sand beaches, and the infamous Patagonian force winds 🙌 Honestly it’s an elopement Photographers Paradise 😍😍 - Being on planes and traveling so much recently reminded me that a while ago on here I asked if anyone would be interested in learning how to “travel hack” like I do... getting extremely cheap or free flights around the world, other epic deals on hotels, rental cars, and just the general tips and tricks I’ve learned over 30+ countries of travel over the past 10 years. - I remember feeling like living a life of travel was only for the very rich or very lucky—which certainly isn’t the case. 2.5K 59
We just shot our last elopement in Patagonia for the season and I’m overwhelmingly inspired by what we’ve experienced over the last couple of weeks. It’s a myth that elopements are “easier” to shoot than big weddings from the photographers perspective. There are so many variables to consider and it takes a ton of time carefully planning every little detail along the way. Especially in a place like Patagonia. For each elopement, I chose the location (this sometimes takes weeks of crawling the internet), helped with any travel advise I could since it was everyone’s first time to this part of the world, scouted every location in person before shooting there, created the day of itinerary - when to leave, when to shoot, etc, taking into account what the weather might be like, how many people might be there (privacy is KEY), creating a packing list and renting any necessary gear (especially for our backpacking elopement), answering questions like should we hike in our wedding outfits or change there, making sure our gear is prepped and ready with backups in case anything happens, basically having backups for everything that could go wrong like weather, location, gear, etc, and the list goes on. All the while Rich is keeping up with his online Master’s degree, I’m answering emails and checking in on future projects, and we got sick literally at the end of every single shoot. After the first elopement i got food poisoning, after the second one Rich got food poisoning, and after the third I broke out in hives likely due to an allergy I was completely unaware of (to a certain kind of beer which is just really sad). It’s an entire process that really falls down on how prepared I am and how much I’ve thought through everything. And to see every single elopement run pretty much as smoothly as i could have ever hoped for is so exhilarating! The planning is work that I want to do, and I’m so grateful for all the life experience that constantly comes in handy at every turn. This photo was at sunrise in Torres del Paine as the sunrise slowly started illuminating the glacier peak in front of us and we just stood there in awe.
