Br. Phap Huu represented Thầy and the Plum Village family at the Luxembourg Peace Prize 2019, where they received the Outstanding Inner Peace Award. Part of his speech feels very relevant to our current practice in these tumultuous times: "Thich Nhat Hanh cultivated peace and compassion in a time of war and turmoil in Vietnam. As he himself said, it was Suffering that was one of his greatest teachers. He lost many beloved friends and saw his country and culture destroyed by violence. In response, he led a Buddhist movement of nonviolent engaged action. Determined not to take sides in the conflict, he trained thousands of social workers in the art of mindful living, teaching them how to cultivate peace and compassion, so they could head out into rural areas to help those suffering under the bombs. It was in this context that he developed practices of mindful breathing, mindful walking, deep listening, and loving speech. He encouraged his social workers to come together once a week to rest, and nourish themselves with mindfulness practice, building their brotherhood and sisterhood, so they could take care of their aspirations, sustain their energy, and not burn out. Today these are known as “days of mindfulness”. Thich Nhat Hanh realised that we each have to take care of ourselves, and have a spiritual dimension to our life, so that we can sustain our energy of peace in the long term. If we have peace in ourselves, we can offer peace, compassion and loving kindness to the world". #Repost@phaphuu (@get_repost) ・・・ #wakeup#engagedbuddhism#thichnhathanh#plumvillage#happiness#mindfulness#monasticlife#interbeing#buddhism#peace

I have a question for us as members of the Church: Are we doing enough to support monastics? When I started sharing my call to discern monastic life, I did not receive much support. In fact I got the opposite, even from those in the Church. Why is that? Why has this vocation become such an oddity that we actively discourage those who are discerning? Monasticism is a beautiful and vital part of the Church. It provides places of rest and spiritual nourishment for the faithful. It maintains the full cycle of prayers and services that parishes cannot. It presents the petitions and concerns of the entire world to God in prayer. It carries on the tradition of the early church when everything was held in common. It gives us a glimpse of the angelic life here on earth. As the Church, we are the caretakers of this tradition and we have a responsibility to ensure it is passed on to the next generation. So what can we do to suppport monasticism? 1. Pray for monasteries, monastics, monastic discerners, and for monastic vocations 2. Visit a monastery, perhaps making it a regular pilgrimage 3. Support a monastery; many are dependent on donations 4. Invite a monk or nun to speak at your church 5. Tell youth about monasticism 6. Encourage discerners God calls us all to different vocations in this life. May we have the courage and compassion to support and encourage one another, no matter how different their path is from ours. Together we can support and help normalize this vocation to help ensure monasteries will remain for the future. How do you think we can best support monasticism? / Guerrico de Igny #pax#oraetlabora#Eucaristía#Monasterio#Benedictino#LaSoledad#sanMigueldeAllende#Guanajuato#México#monasticlife#monacatomexicano#cogulla#monje#liturgia#Iglesia#monastery#Católicos#Paz

Sometimes the story of how everything comes together it pretty remarkable. Take these three meditators in the Shwe Oo Min tradition, for example. The woman on the right was raised in China, after her family fled Austria during World War II to escape Jewish persecution. Her mother was so grateful to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek for granting a "life visa" to China for all fleeing Jews that he became her icon. The daughter has become a dedicated meditator in the Sayadaw U Tejaniya's tradition, and has been in touch with meditators in Shanghai about creating a Shwe Oo Min branch there, and has received a positive reception. More recently, Chinese meditators wished to oversee kitchen improvements at the Shwe Oo Min monastic kitchen to better serve meditators. A call went out to the Chinese social media app WeChat at 10 pm on one evening, and by 8 am the following morning (Yangon time), all needed dana had been collected and further funds were no longer even being accepted. The meditator standing in the middle coordinates all of Sayadaw U Tejaniya's European visits, and has volunteered to come to Burma and oversee all kitchen construction to oversee quality. The daughter has since been in touch with meditators in Shanghai about creating a Shwe Oo Min branch there, and has received a positive reception. #Generalissimo#chiangkaishek#jewishshanghai#jewishchina#shweoomin#shweoominmonastery#sayadawutejaniya#utejaniya#ashintejaniya#chinesebuddhism#dhamma#dharma#jewishaustria#monastery#monasterylife#monasticlife

Paraskevi of Iconium Saint Paraskevi of Iconium (also known as Paraskeva Pyatnitsa) is venerated as a Christian virgin martyr. According to Christian tradition, she was born to a rich family of Iconium. Her parents were Christian, and Paraskevi was named as such (the name means "Friday" in Greek) because she was baptized on a Friday and because Friday was the day of Christ's Passion. The icon is covered with a gilded silver and gold riza. The purpose of a riza is to honour and venerate an icon. Because candles and lampadas (oil lamps) are burned in front of icons, icons can become darkened over time. The riza helps protect the icon. A riza is designed specifically for the icon it is to cover. It leaves open spaces where the face, hands, and feet of the icon's subject can be seen. The haloes on rizas are often more elaborate than on the original icons. Rizas for icons of the Theotokos (Mother of God) often have a crown on them. The robes worn by the subjects often are adorned with pearls or jewels. Usually a riza covers the entire surface of the icon except for the face and hands.

#repost One of the most enchanted places in my home town is a place called Hummock Island, on Old Mill Pond. My parents lived on Old Mill Beach through the years when I was growing up, and therefore I spent a lot of time in the vicinity. I was always fascinated by Hummock Island, and the hermit fisherman who allegedly lived there. / B. “Adoration of the Magi” by Nicolo Bambini (1651-1736) oil on canvas Chiesa di San Zaccaria (Venice) Niccolò Bambini (1651–1736) was an Italian painter of the late-Renaissance and early-Baroque periods. He was born in Venice in 1651, and first studied under Giulio Mazzoni (1525–1618) at Venice. During this period Mazzini completed the ceiling of the church of S. Moisè, and an Allegory of Venice in the hall of the Four Doors of the ducal Palace. Later he went to Rome, where he became a pupil of Carlo Maratti ( 1625 – 1713). On his own he painted numerous church commissions and murals, many in Venice such as the “Adoration of the Magi” in the Venetian Church of St. Zaccaria (St. Zachariah father of St. John the Baptist). Some have suggested that his later work seems to have been influenced by Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) so much to be almost confused with him, as in the allegorical compartment with Minerva who Crowns Titus Livius in the ceiling of the library of the patriarchal seminary of Venice. For this reason it cannot be excluded that some works that considered of Ricci's youthful period belong to Nicolo Bambini, especially from the Parma group. He died in Venice. He had two sons who were painters, Giovanni and Stefano.

The remains of the beautiful Mount Grace Priory, England's best preserved Carthusian priory dating from the 14th century. I had an enjoyable time exploring the fabulous ruins yesterday after the house and gardens. The Carthusian order was one of strict withdrawal from the world in order to serve God by personal devotion. Unlike other monks the Carthusians lived a solitary life and rarely met each other. They each lived in their own house or "cell" in isolation. The cell had its own cloister and garden. The reconstructed cell at Mount Grace Priory gave a fascinating insight into what life must have been like for the monks. #englishheritage#mountgracepriory#history#monasticlife#historicbuildings#historicruins#charterhouse#priory#northyorkshire#medievalworld#ancientmonuments
