Barn owls that suffer from melanism are extremely rare to find. Due to their unusual colours, they remain unfed, and are typically killed at birth or thrown out of the nest by their mothers. ['Rarest Penguin On Earth' Caught On Camera In Antarctica] http://va.newsrepublic.net/s/FNdQFQ 'Rarest Penguin On #Earth' Caught On #Camera In #Antarctica#HuffPost February 19, 2019 2:53 am Following New footage from #BBCAmerica shows what just might be a one-of-a-kind emperor penguin. Unlike its famous black and white counterparts, this one is covered almost entirely in black feathers ― the result of a rare #genetic mutation called melanism. “This could be the first-ever footage of an all black #emperor penguin,” the clip from BBC Earth’s wildlife show “Dynasties” notes. While the #mutation may appear from time to time, the dark color makes it easier to spot by predators, making it very unusual for a penguin like this one to survive to adulthood. “He or she could be the only one of its kind,” the clip states: #NationalGeographic has documented melanism on other types of penguins, especially the king penguins, which appear to have the mutation more often than others. However, the magazine’s website says it has also found evidence of partial #melanism in #Adélie,#chinstrap,#gentoo,#macaroni and #royal#penguins. (h/t Digg) #NatGeo#penguin

The back panther or a melanistic leopard is a rare specimen seen in the central Indian landscape. It is less recorded and a hard find, as there were very few records of the melanistic leopards. The black panther in Tadoba is a rare catch as it is still shy because of its arrival in a new area. All this hype around the incredible images of the #blackleopard sighted in Loisaba, Kenya, has us thinking back to September of 2015 when we went to Aberdare National Park in search of that elusive animal! We might not have been lucky enough to find the African black panther itself, but we got five different melanistic serval instead. What a special place! Check out the blog from our expedition to Aberdare via the link in our bio. The best animal news this week??? The first black leopard sighting in Africa in 109 years!!!! . . . This female was caught on a camera trap in @loisaba_conservancy in central Kenya. Set up by researcher @_life_of_a_biologist_ from the @sandiegozoo . Black leopards are black because of a genetic condition called melanism. It causes them to produce excess dark pigmentation. Around 11% of the world’s population of leopards are thought to be black- Most of which are often sighted in Asia. It’s thought the dark color of their coats, serves as camouflage in the shady rainforest. It’s a great adaptation for hunting in the dense undergrowth... . Although the black leopard recently seen in Africa, was found in an African Savannah-type environment. Her coat would not serve as an adaptive advantage.... . There is still so much to learn about these elusive animals!!! . . . . 📸: #repost@loisaba_conservancy . . . . . #BlackLeopard#BlackPanther#BlackPanthers#BlackLeopards#leopards#leopard#wildlife_perfection#animalatothemax#corbinmaxey#cat#cats#catsofig#catsofinsta#catsofinstagram#conservation#wildlifeconservation#africa#nature#natureperfection#wildlifephotography#naturelovers#beautifulanimal#Kenya#WildlifeBiologist#melanism#panther#Laikipia

Photographs of a rare black leopard released yesterday were not in fact the first from Africa in a century, as New Scientist and many others reported. . . . In 2013, Phoebe Okall, a photographer for Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper, captured this image at Ol Jogi Conservancy, around 50 kilometres from the Loisaba Conservancy where the more recent photos were taken. . . . That leopard, named Bagheera, was not born in the wild though – he was rescued from a pet shop in New York and brought to Kenya as a cub. . . . Nicholas Pilfold of San Diego Zoo Global, the lead researcher for a leopard conservation programme in Laikipia County, said the new photos were the first confirmed images of black leopards in nearly 100 years – although “confirmed” in this context means “the image must show the characteristic rosette pattern of the leopard”. . . . Pilford’s journal paper reporting the new photos also included an image taken in 2007, which shows a black leopard at Ol Ari Nyiro Conservancy, about 50 kilometres west of Loisaba Conservancy. . . . Black leopards, also called panthers, have a gene mutation that results in their unusual dark coat – a condition called melanism. They are extremely rare, and most often seen in southeast Asia. . . . A 2017 paper mapping the distribution of black leopards included five reported sightings in Africa, but most were not confirmed with photographic evidence. The last confirmed sighting was from Ethiopia in 1909. . . . It is thought that the gene variant for melanism may be advantageous in moist forests, where dark coloration might help them stay out of sight. This part of Kenya is semi-arid, with pockets of tropical forest among grassland and shrubland. . . . #blueprintafric#blueprintafrictv#black#panther#photography#kenya#ethiopia#south#east#asia#phoebeokall#oljogi#oljogiconservancy#leopard#bagheera#sandiego#zoo#newyork#cub#global#nicholas#pilford#laikipia#olarinyiroranch#loisaba#blackleopard#melanism#blackpanther#nigeria#africa

BLACK PANTHER 🇰🇪🌍 @magicalkenya@blackpanther@kenyawildlifeservice • • The photograph of the #blackleopard called Bagheera at Ol-Jogi game reserve in Laikipia, Kenya that was taken on August 27, 2013 by former @dailynation photographer Phoebe Okall. • In 2018, Kenya-based biologist, Nick Pilfold and his team deployed a set of camera traps throughout the bushlands of Loisaba Conservancy where they spotted the black leopard, the second to be spotted in Laikipia after a similar discovery by @dailynation in 2013. • According to the National Geographic, the black leopard has #melanism and the last such sighting was in 1909 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. • "The opposite of #albinism, melanism is the result of a gene that causes a surplus of pigment in the skin or hair of an animal so that it appears #black. Melanistic leopards have been reported in and around Kenya for decades, but scientific confirmation of their existence remains quite rare," states National Geographic on their website. • National Geographic adds that there are nine leopard subspecies ranging from Africa all the way to eastern Russia. And, while 11 per cent of leopards alive today are thought to be melanistic , most are found in Southeast Asia, where tropical forests offer an abundance of shade. • • #leopard#blackpanther#panther#wildlife#addisababa#ethiopia#eastafrica#wildlifephotography#dailynation#tourism#tourist#magicalkenya#magicalkenya🇰🇪#geography#nature#bushlands#african#nationalgeographic#tembeakenya#laikipiacounty#kenya#africa

To him, there seem to be a thousand bars and back behind those thousand bars no world. The soft the supple step and sturdy pace, that in the smallest of all circles turns, moves like a dance of strength around a core in which a mighty will is standing stunned. Only at times the pupil’s curtain slides up soundlessly — . An image enters then, goes through the tensioned stillness of the limbs — and in the heart ceases to be.

"𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗗" | A black leopard has been photographed in Africa for the first time in more than 100 years. The creatures are very limited in numbers in the region and sightings are extremely rare. The stunning images were captured by Will Burrard-Lucas (@willbl) who used a Camtraptions camera trap to take the photos in the dead of night. Melanism (black coloration) occurs in about 11% of leopards, but most are found in Asia. The last confirmed photograph of a black leopard in Africa was taken in Ethiopia in 1909, according to the African Journal of Ecology. Tap the link in our bio to read more. Melanism, a special color morph caused by the overdevelopment of melanin in skin or its appendages. It’s actually much rarer compared to the more well known albinism, which is completely the opposite. I happened to spot this special tree sparrow among its other normal fellows, it was very dark-colored(pls check my older posts for a normal looking tree sparrow if you never see one). This one was not pure black, it’s more of a dark chocolate color, but it’s only a juvenile, I’m interested to see if it will grow even darker next time when we meet;) #melanistic#treesparrow#melanism#birdphoto#birdphotography#birdphotographer#wildlife#wildlifephoto#wildlifephotography#wildlifephotographer#animals#animalphoto#animalphotography#nature#naturephotography#photo#photography#photographer#canon#canon7dmarkii#sigma#bird#birdingshanghai#rarebird

#Repost@sandesh.guru with @get_repost ・・・ Black is the New Gold! - A story of the black panther of Tadoba!! We all know about Rudyard Kipling who has inspired us a long way through ‘The Jungle Book’ and its characters. Those characters in the story taught us a lot about the Indian Wildlife and inspired young children to know more about the jungles and animals of India. May be, like many, even I was triggered by this very story. While coming to Tadoba five months ago, I had never thought I would see a Black Panther. Like Kipling called the Black Panther ‘Bagheera’(Leopard in Hindi), I would love to call him ‘Akaala’ (a Sanskrit word which means Blackish). I saw my first Black Panther on 1st of February 2019 on the afternoon safari. I also did get some decent images. The next day morning, we had a great opportunity as we looked for the tiger and we had left with one hour to exit. We did see the tiger far off. By then, our guest informed us that one of the cubs was seen in the area further down the safari track. We went to see if it was still visible but to our luck we got to know that the black panther was sitting on the track, it saw the vehicle and ran. As we had missed it again we started searching for it in the thickets. As we were moving slowly, I could see a black shadow in the shape of a typical leopard, stretching itself and sitting on the ground. Caught her again as she moved swiftly and hid in the bushes. Being intuitive, we drove the vehicle parallel to the road and waited for her patiently. She came on the roadside, looked at our vehicles, leaped again and escaped. The jinx has now been broken, finally! L👀K closely. 🦉👀🦉 As if 10 Long-eared Owls roosted together wasn't spectacular enough, check out the dark visitor who stopped by our explore.org live cam! This unusual owl is expressing some degree of melanism. Melanin mutations - like melanism and albinism - are rare in wild populations and most affected animals are thought to have shortened life expectancy. As part of our on-going efforts to learn more about Long-eared Owls, we will attempt to capture and band this individual to understand more about its unique characteristics and gather information on age and sex. Here is some information about melanism from a previous post: Melanism is a genetic mutation that causes the excessive production of melanin in animals, often causing them to be entirely black. Melanism, the opposite of albinism, occurs in birds, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles. In some instances, melanism seems to be a product of natural selection, improving an animals’ ability to retain heat or blend in with its surroundings. Melanistic animals can appear so different that they are sometimes mistaken for an entirely different species. This winter roost cam has been fantastic lately, capturing as many as 11 Long-eared Owls roosting together!
