Ebiil Conservation Area, Enhanced Grouper Aggregation Survey. In collaboration with the Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations (SCRFA), we conducted underwater GPS surveys over the entire spatial extent of the grouper aggregation site at Ebiil Channel for 12 months. These surveys confirmed that there were large areas of the aggregation site with considerable numbers of groupers present that had not previously been accounted for. Sampling of the entire site was important to establish a solid baseline of the grouper species and numbers aggregating at the site for future reference to know how the population of groupers is changing overtime. Having a good baseline of grouper numbers and species present at the site enables recommendations to be made in relation to future use of the grouper resources that use the site. Most importantly, a robust sampling protocol is established that can be applied more widely to other aggregation sites in a representative and efficient way. #palau#marinescience#marinebiology#biodiversity#marineconservation#conservation#protectedareas#grouper#wildlifeconservation#ocean#saveourseas

We went to my site over the weekend to do sampling and saw plastics tangled in corals. This is where most of our plastics go. I read that in the last decade over 50% of marine life was destroyed by human activity and as we know, the oceans are continuously filled with plastic which threatens marine life… Fortunately there is a fashion label, @shopbaiji , that exists and donates 25% of proceeds to marine conservation, with one of their affiliated charities being @dolphin_research_australia to help the movement towards protecting marine life🐬 So if you are passionate about marine conservation, want to draw your attention to it amongst other passions, or want to help contribute to the protection of dolphins and marine life in any way, I bring to you super comfy espadrilles and t-shirt in my fave colour from Baiji’s marine friendly collection! "Kisses" Although it seems that a kiss is made, two male sailors fight for the territory. The winner will make the nest where the family will put the eggs and he will fertilize them. - Info: The East Atlantic peacock wrasse (Symphodus tinca) is a species of wrasse native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Spain to Morocco and in the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. This species lives around rocks surrounded by eelgrass and can also be found in brackish waters in lagoons. It occurs at depths from 1 to 50 m (3.3 to 164.0 ft). This species can reach 44 cm (17 in) in standard length, though most grow no larger than 25 cm (9.8 in). This species is sought as a game fish and is also important to local peoples as a food fish. It can also be found in the aquarium trade. Photo by @DavidAntoja For more 👉 Follow us! 👉 @ima_marinebiologist Thank you so much 👌🏻👌🏻

What's this guy looking at..?? Follow his gaze and see if you can spot it... This is a longsnout seahorse. Hippocampus reidi. Seahorses are sensitive to disturbance - in the UK there are regulations prohibiting using a flash to photograph them. This one at Macabuca, Grand Cayman, today was pretty popular with all the divers. I tried to keep my distance and shot this in natural light. It was the end of the dive, so was a bit too floaty to frame it as well as I'd have liked. #seahorse#seahorsesofinstagram#hippocampus#hippocampusreidi#macabuca#sundivers#cayman#grandcayman#caymanislands#sundayfunday#sundayscuba#dive#girlswhodive#girlsthatdive#divinglife#marinelife#marineconservation#protect#TG5#olyTG5#olympustg5#olympus#underwaterphotography

This was exactly one year ago. I joke that whenever I visit home I bring the rain as it never fails, my vacay ALWAYS includes a few showers. . This especially wet day, a couple friends and I went out in search of manta rays. After about an hour on the boat in frigid rain, wind, and darkness, morale dissipated. We contemplated coming in... Until suddenly out of the darkness of the water appeared a small school of mantas, flapping around in a frenzy! That day we braved the storm and I had my very first manta experience! They are everything and more than you could ever imagine- majestic, graceful, otherworldly. . The mantas went on their way and a glimmer of sunlight peeked through the clouds, then a rainbow appeared, framing the Ko’olaus. So, in short (or long, I never write this long of a caption), it’s true- brave the storm, because they ain’t no rainbows without the rain! 🌈 💙 . . . 📸 @lau_z_foto#home#hawaii#girlswhofreedive#islandlife#freedive#islandgirl#oahu#oahulife#saveouroceans#grownnotflown#saynotosingleuseplastic#marineconservation#endangered#malama

"Conversations" - Whatever these Sperm Whales are talking about, it certainly ain't the news at 5. This incredible moment was filmed off the Coast of Dominica under special government permits courtesy of Professional Underwater Wildlife Phorographer and Filmmaker, Jeffrey Honda @jeffreyhondaphotography - This was one of the most AMAZING moments that I have had in this life! While swimming with these 3 young females, a large male the size of a school bus came out of the blue to join them. The clicking sound you hear is their “coda,” which is their form of communication. I could feel something scanning me and was confused how I could feel that from the females. You can hear my surprise when I figure out that it was the male joining us that was clicking. This male also decides to bellow out a nice cry as the group converges in front of me. I have never seen or heard footage of a sperm whale doing this before. A sperm whale can click at 236dB. It is the loudest animal on the planet. Scientists believe that they can hear each other from thousands of miles away. They can destroy the human ear and they can literally vibrate a person to death. They also have the largest brain of any animal on the planet. Since I was 7 years old it has been a dream to dive with the largest predator on the planet. Every time I get in the water with these giants, it’s a dream come true! This footage was taken under Dominican government permit. The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) or cachalot /ˈkæʃəˌlɒt, ˈkæʃəˌloʊ/ is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator. It is the only living member of genus Physeter and one of three extant species in the sperm whale family, along with the pygmy sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale of the genus Kogia. Adult males who are not breeding live solitary lives, whereas females and juvenile males live together in groups. The main driving force for the sexual segregation of adult sperm whales is scramble competition for mesopelagic squid. Females and their young remain in groups, while mature males leave their "natal unit" somewhere between 4 and 21 years of age. Repost form @maestro320 - #Education#SpermWhale For more 👉

How awesome is this? Thanks to bodies like the International whaling commission calling for a moratorium on whaling in 1982 or the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) which was founded in 1980, a time where they saw only a couple hundred humpbacks pass by the Hawaiin coast, now see more than 10,000 pass up and down their waters. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The US Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act have also played a major role in the recovery of humpback whale populations who were once almost hunted to extinction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the 20th century, technological advances turned hunting super deadly, during that period around 2.9 million whales were slaughtered, endangering many species. But that grim history is in the past where it belongs and global efforts to improve these gentle giants' stocks have been really working. In 2016, 9 of their 14 known population segments had been regenerated enough to consider making the decision to take them off the endangered species list. Oh, what a scene. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is not just the humpback whale however that has been doing well under conservation policy. 78% of marine mammal populations and 75% of sea turtle populations increased greatly after the ESA listing when  23 representative populations of 14 marine mammal species were investigated. Sadly, 9% were in decline despite being protected. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, what this data shows is that given the chance animal populations really can bounce back, even when they are on the brink of extinction. Conservation policies work, plain and simple. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Breathe

Just a bunch of kids on their way to school 🐧🎓😍 #didyouknow that a Penguin's striking coloring is a matter of camouflage; from above, its black back blends into the murky depths of the ocean. From below, its white belly is hidden against the bright surface. Video by @npcullen#cute#nature#ocean For more 👉 Follow us! 👉 @ima_marinebiologist Thank you so much 👌🏻👌🏻

I remember years ago, standing in shallow water with nurse sharks flapping around and brushing past our legs. They weren’t interested in us, nor were they “tamed” by the constant influx of tourist feeding and swimming with them like they are here. The sharks of my childhood only showed up a certain time of year in a tiny secluded bay looking for a mate. That first encounter was all I needed to be hooked. To this day, I still feel like that little girl standing in awe amongst these beautiful creatures. . . Whatever happened to our annual mating sharks?! Nurse sharks have site fidelity, meaning they will come back to mate in the same area. After a while we would see fewer and fewer of them and eventually they all disappeared. I can only assume that they were eventually all hunted. . . . . #protectwhatyoulove#worthmorealive#savethesharks#marineconservation#gratitude#fortheoceans#wildandfree#coexistence#ecotourism#nurseshark#Ginglymostomacirratum
