Magnificent frigate bird. Not sure why they're "magnificent" but hey, I didn't name them. They're a huge bird with a cormorant type beak, wingspans up to 8 ft, and they soar the skies effortlessly. One was clocked by satellite over the Indian Ocean for two months without landing. This female was flying with a small group about 150 ft over my house on Friday late afternoon. I see them occasionally in the marina here perched on top of a high mast or beacon tower but most of the time they're waaaay up there in the sky. Cool bird. Quite magnificent actually! 😜 . . . #magnificentfrigatebird#frigatebird#birdsofinstagram#planetbirds#featured_wildlife#best_birds_of_world#bb_of_ig#birdsmagazine#naturyst#wildlife#wildlifephotography#birdfreaks#bestbirdshots#kings_birds#birdlife#bird_brilliance#audubonsociety@animalife_world#natgeoyourshot#birdsonearth#nuts_about_birds#Birdsplace#birds_captures#birdselite#feather_perfection#BIRDS_iLLiFE#birdfreaks#elite_feathered_wings#brucehanover

A group of juvenile magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) in North Seymour Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. The bird was aptly named after the frigate ship, a fast vessel used by pirates. Reason: The frigatebird hijacks the food of other birds in mid air. It has enviable aerial maneuverability despite its broad wingspan. When in flight, the bird's long, pointed wings and forked tail make its silhouette easily recognizable. Both sexes have short legs, a long, hooked bill, brownish-black plumage. Male magnificent frigatebird displaying his call in front of females in North Seymour Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. North Seymour is a small island near Baltra Island in the Galápagos Islands. The whole island is covered with low, bushy vegetation. North Seymour has a visitor trail approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) in length crossing the inland of the island. It hosts one of the largest populations of magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens). The bird was aptly named after the frigate ship, a fast vessel used by pirates. Reason: The frigatebird hijacks the food of other birds in mid air. It has enviable aerial maneuverability despite its broad wingspan. There are two main species: Magnificent and Greater. When in flight, the bird's long, pointed wings and forked tail make its silhouette easily recognizable. The adult male is all-black with a scarlet throat pouch that is inflated like a balloon in the breeding season to attract and seduce females. The call of the magnificent frigatebird is a repeated rattling noise with his inflated throat pouch, that sounds much like someone trying to start a stalled car engine. #tbt#frigatebird#magnificentfrigatebird#northseymourisland#galapagos#galapagosislands#ecuador#travelphotography#wanderlust#travelgram#instatravel#nofilter#beautifuldestinations#aroundtheworld#solotravel#roamtheplanet#letsgosomewhere#welltravelled#doyoutravel

I was able to get pretty close to my favorite Florida birds today! I saw a small group of Magnificent Frigatebirds resting on the high branches of a nearby mangrove island. I only had my small underwater point and shoot camera, and wanted to get close enough to not have to try to zoom in too far with it. I was able to float at the surface crocodile-style and pull myself along with my hands. Surprisingly, they didn't seem to care at all that I was there, and let me get as close as I wanted. ..... These frigatebirds are some of the largest seafaring birds in the Caribbean, and come to Florida to nest. They are generally pretty skittish around people, and now their only known U.S. nesting colony is 70 miles off the coast from Key West in Dry Tortugas National Park. They are excellent soarers, and can travel hundreds of miles without flapping their wings at all, thanks to the largest wingspan-weight ratio in the world (over 7 feet!). Despite living their entire life at sea, these birds actually lack the oil on their feathers and can't get wet, so they only feed on prey within the top few inches of the ocean, and will often bully other birds into regurgitating their freshly caught meals onto the surface of the water. #frigatebird#magnificentfrigatebird#bird#birding#birdsofinstagram#seabird#mangroves#picnicisland#floridakeys#bigpinekey#2019#nature#picoftheday#florida#naturalflorida#ocean#everglades#bigcypress#conservation#sustainable#savethesharks#skipthestraw#nsu#ecology#nikon#photography

Day 163: Magnificent!! Whoopee (cushion)! With a new clean-eating plan, I've spent significant time in the produce section, where dragon fruit and aloe leaf meld into the magnificent frigatebird. This mythically giant seabird, with its 7- to 8-foot wingspan, can't afford to get wet, so it either skims prey off the ocean surface or snatches it from fellow drifters. It's the only seabird that is SUPER sexually dimorphic -- also why he looks like a swollen scrotum -- and in flight might inspire the classic "It's a bird?!" "It's a plane?!" "Oh. It IS a bird!" quandary. (Above right is an inset slice of the speckled insides of the same pitaya cactus [dragon] fruit, showing an even better match.) - - #365photochallenge#cornellbirds#calendar2019#birdaday#birds#birdsareeverywhere#matchgame#match#magnificent#magnificentfrigatebird#frigatebird#dragonfruit#aloeleaf#produce#fruit#sexuallydimorphic@brassycassy@amelia_on_an_island

"Light as a feather?" How 'bout "light as a frigatebird bone?" The skeletons of frigatebirds are so highly pneumatic and thin-walled that the wing bones wind up weighing less than half of what the wing feathers weigh! We could do this comparison because OU undergrad @lydsgies Lydia Giesige did such a great job "deboning" the frigatebird's wings: http://bit.ly/2Ky9eT4. Now we gotta try this same comparison with a loon...a diving bird that kinda wants to be heavy, yet still fly! #frigatebird#magnificentfrigatebird#feathers#birdbones

#Frigatebirds are so fascinatingly weird in so many ways. They spend almost all their time on the wing annoying and harassing other birds and ultimately stealing the prey the other birds had caught—they're famous "kleptoparasites!" They hardly ever land, and so they have gigantic wings & teeny hindlimbs. Their legs are actually smaller than their hands! Here is a left wing skeleton wrapped around the left hindlimb. The skeleton just came out of the #dermestid beetles, and I thought I'd share this remarkable limb disparity before having them numbered and put in our collection. - The second is a bonus #frigatebird kneecap photo, showing...double patellae! The deep (caudal) surface on the right side shows a suture between the proximal and distal components, suggesting that indeed each side has either two patellae or a split patella (maybe two centers of ossification). I'm a skull guy and these are well behind the occipital condyle so I officially have no clue exactly what's going on with frigatebird knees. 😉 #magnificentfrigatebird#skeleton#birdskeleton#anatomy#aviananatomy

““Hope” is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all - And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard - And sore must be the storm - That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm - I’ve heard it in the chillest land - And on the strangest Sea - Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.” — Emily Dickinson #magnificentfrigatebird#birding#birdnerd

The male magnificent frigatebird - pictured here in the Galapagos - attracts females by inflating its bright red, heart-shaped gular sac on its chest/neck, as you can see here. Known as the pirates of the skies, they're also known for their kleptoparasitic behaviour, in which they attack other seabirds that have caught fish, and peck at them in order to force them to regurgitate their meals. The thieving frigatebirds then nosedive towards the sea, catching the disgorged prey before it hits the water. . . . . . #bird#birds#birding#birdsofinstagram#magnificentfrigatebird#frigatebird#pirates#galapagos#ecuador#southamerica#love#romance#adorable#romantic#cute#sweet#beautiful#eyes#heart#seabirds#like4like#instadaily#traveladdict#travelinfluencer#travelwriter#travel#wildlife#animals#wildlifephotography#wildlifephotographer

I normally wouldn’t post such crummy photos, but in the spirit of posting anytime I see a type of bird for the first time, here are some shots of a male and a female magnificent frigatebird. I saw them last week along east beach soaring high in the updraft of one of the high-rise condo buildings. I knew they were something I’d never seen before because of the size, wing angles, and hook at the end of their beaks. They were only there a few minutes and remained too high to get any better shots with my equipment. Have looked for them every day since, but have not seen them again. When spring comes, the Blue Footed Booby dances and shows his feet to the females that are flying in the search of good male! The color in their feet is more or less intense depending on how much fish they are able to catch and there for provide food for the female and her future babies. So when then Booby is dancing, he is literally saying: Look at my feet!! Don’t you love mother nature? ❤️🌎 Do you know of any other species that does something similar? 😉 . . 😉 . . .
