This is Loijipu, a rescued black rhino calf that’s being reintroduced to life in the wild in Sera Conservancy, Kenya. Aged nearly two, he was found abandoned at only two days old and thanks to the amazing efforts of the Reteti sanctuary in nearby Namunyak he’s now a happy, healthy youngster, full of personality and keeping his ranger guardians on their toes! Wonderful to witness a happy rhino story first-hand. 🦏 #asiliaadventures#adventureseason#alexhuntersafaris#seraconservancy#northernrangelandstrust#whyilovekenya#rhinoconservation#helpingrhinos#savetherhinos#savethechubbyunicorns#adventuretime#outdooradventures#wildlifeconservation#rhinosofinstagram#retetielephants#loijipu#babyrhino#rhinorescue#safari#safarikenya

What a year it's been for Sera’s rhinos! There were three black rhino calves born in Sera this year, and zero incidents of poaching. This is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to the tireless work of rangers, the community and their partners. These collaborative efforts have shown that not only is community-led black rhino conservation possible, but it makes sense. Particularly for one little black rhino calf - Loijipu.
Loijipu was abandoned by his mother in February 2017, discovered by a ranger patrol. With the support of the @kenyawildlifeservice, he was moved to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in nearby Namunyak Conservancy, to be hand-reared by keepers. Like Sera, Reteti is another ‘community conservancy first’ for east Africa, being the only community-run establishment of its kind in the region. Loijipu thrived under the care of his keepers, and as his wild instincts became stronger, they decided he was ready to go back to Sera. He was moved on the 6th June 2018 and arrived to a colourful welcome by Sera Community Conservancy members. His re-wildling will be a gradual process, and for now he remains under the close watch of keepers and rangers. He is taking well to life at Sera, and is now one of 15 black rhinos in the Sanctuary. It’s #worldrhinoday... only 750 Eastern Black Rhino remain on our planet. SEVEN. HUNDRED. AND. FIFTY. Such a frightening fact... it is up to us as individuals, as a community, as a country, as the guardians of this planet to take a stand against the destruction of this place we call home, of our wildlife, our oceans... and frankly all living creatures. I hope I live to see the end of animal cruelty and commercial exploitation... Loijipu the rhino has been released back into the wild! 🦏🎉 March to the Top was fortunate enough to visit him in person during his short care period at @r.e.s.c.u.e - - Kenya Wildlife Service vet Dr. Mathew Mutinda explains, “We rescued Loijipu after he was abandoned by the mother 48 hours after birth. With close monitoring and care at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Namunyak Community Conservancy, he has done well. Now, at one year four months, his wild instincts are starting to kick in. This is a key indicator that the time has come to re-wild the rhino.” 👍 All of us at March to the Top wish Loijipu the best. Thank you to his caretakers for preparing him for this transition! - - - - 📷 Photo by @nrt_kenya#marchtothetop#health#education#conservation#nonprofit#501c3#kenya#africa#donate#africanamazing#beautiful#love#dosomething#socialgood#rhino#blackrhino#rescue#reteti#numunyak#nrt#northernrangelandstrust#kws#kenyawildlifeservice#wildlifeconservancy#loijipu

Loijipu & me. Part 2 . . I’ve been featuring a certain little black rhino recently - and this week it happened. He’s been re-introduced to Sera Conservancy, the area where he was born at the beginning of last year. Loijipu is home. . . Provided with amazing care, love and nurturing through the last 16 months at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), this little rhino, abandoned by his mother, thrived. Reteti, based in Northern Kenya and staffed by the local Samburu people, is the first community owned and run Elephant Sanctuary in Africa. And they did a wonderful job raising Loijipu, who I had the joy of visiting with 3 times - once when he was 3 months old and twice again a little earlier this year. . . Long, healthy and happy life, Loijipu. The possibility of seeing you in the wild might be enough to tempt me back out for another rhino tracking session the next time I’m back 💞🦏💞 . . #kenya#northernkenya#namunyak#namunyakconservancy#seraconservancy#retetielephants#loijipu#blackrhino#babyblackrhino#cutenessoverload#ilovekenya#whyilovekenya#wildlife#wildlifephotography#conservation#livingthedream#cantwaittocomeback@katie.rowe@r.e.s.c.u.e

Loijipu & me. . My last post was about the day I fell in love with a little black rhino last year - today, here’s one of my favourite pics from my trip last February - the reunion. When he allowed me to once again scratch and stroke his face. He seemed to enjoy it 💞🦏💞. . I will be featuring more photos from my recent visit through the coming weeks, knowing that Loijipu will probably not be there the next time I visit. He will be back home. Where he belongs. Again, many thanks to everyone at Reteti (@r.e.s.c.u.e) who does an amazing job of rescue & rehabilitation, nurture & love. . . #kenya#northernkenya#namunyak#namunyakconservancy#sararacamp#retetielephants#loijipu#blackrhino#babyblackrhino#cutenessoverload#ilovekenya#whyilovekenya#wildlife#wildlifephotography#livingthedream

On this day last year - my Love Affair with Africa.

I remember 09-June-2017
On this day last year - my Love Affair with Africa. . . I remember 09-June-2017 as clearly as yesterday. The day I fell in love. . . Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya is the first community owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa, the aim being to re-release rescued baby elephants back to their homelands. Located in the Namunyak Conservancy, all staff, male and female, are local Samburu, with huge on-rolling benefits to the entire community. . . I was beyond excited to visit but nothing prepared me for the little bundle of sweetness who would completely steal my heart. The baby elephants were sublime, of course they were. 5 in total at the time, with the herd having more than doubled since then. But it was a little black rhino who would end up stealing the show that day. . . Loijipu had been abandoned by his mother just a couple of days after his birth in February in neighbouring Sera Conservancy, but fortunately for him, Reteti was able to take him on board with a view to returning him back to the wild when he was old enough. . . With a dedicated keeper and the curiosity - and lope - of a puppy, we were introduced to this little bundle of cute, who slowly but surely became used to our presence, even allowing a little scratch of his nub of a horn. . . We left Reteti that day with a little black rhino firmly ensconced in heart and I’ve since had the privilege of returning earlier this year to see what a handsome young rhino Loijipu has grown into. The first two pictures are from June 2017 when he was 3 months old, the third from February 2018 a couple of days after his first birthday. . . I will be featuring more photos from my recent visit through the coming weeks, knowing that Loijipu will probably not be there the next time I visit. He will be home. Where he ought to be. All thanks to everyone at Reteti who does an amazing job of rescue, rehabilitation, nurture & love. . . #kenya#northernkenya#namunyak#namunyakconservancy#sararacamp#retetielephants#loijipu#blackrhino#babyblackrhino#cutenessoverload#ilovekenya#whyilovekenya#wildlife#wildlifephotography#livingthedream

Reunited with my favourite little man. I met Loijipu last June when he was only a few months old. Today, 8 months later we met up again, him a strapping young man and on the way to being released back to the Wild. Excuse the commentary but he seemed to like it 😍 - thanks to @sararacamp for a superb morning * * * #Kenya#northernkenya#Namunyak#Namunyakconservancy#Sararacamp#Retetielephants#loijipu#blackrhino#babyblackrhino#curenessoverload#whyilovekenya#wildlife#wildlifephotography#livingthedream
