Stopped in @patagoniaballard today and couldn't resist picking this up, especially not after going to a talk from Quinton Martins from @auduboncanyonranch last December. I've always been fascinated by mountain lions (and wildlife ecology is a quickly growing interest of mine), but I have so much more to learn! #livingwithlions#patagonia

@natgeo photo by @stevewinterphoto - the end of the day in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. The cub climbs down from the safety of the tree where it has spent the day. And is now intensely looking off into the distance as she hears the call of her mom who is coming to round up her 3 cubs. The safety our mother gives us is true in humans and our animal cousins. Just 100 years ago there may have been as many as 500,000 lions which roamed the African continent but today there it is estimated that as few as 16,000 - 30,000 remain, and research by lion biologist Hans Bauer and colleagues suggests lions in much of west, east and central Africa will decline by 50% in the next two decades if something dramatic is not done! The biggest threats facing lions in Africa are poaching of their prey and retaliatory killings by farmers when lions eat their cattle! There is also an emerging threat of lions being used in Chinese medicine as tigers become rarer. @wildaid "When the buying stops the killing can too” Poisonings and poaching are the main threats to lions across their East African range. Most lion populations in East, Central and West Africa are declining so the time to act is now. Their long-term future remains in question: they are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, lack of prey, unsustainable hunting and now poaching for their skins, bones, claws and other body parts. But projects like these show how with determination, political will, community support, and simply envisioning a better future, we can bring this species back as well as protect our last wild landscapes, benefiting both wildlife and people, and creating a better existence for all. #PhotographyForGood#repost from @amivitale | Photo by @amivitale.@lionlandscapes Lion Rangers gather around a fire at a boma (enclosure) in @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. By monitoring lion movements closely, the Lion Rangers are able to preempt human-carnivore conflict by warning livestock owners of the lions whereabouts and shadowing lions when they move into areas with high risk of conflict. They also serve as ambassadors for wildlife, educating and supporting local livestock owners in conservation initiatives. @lionlandscapes is currently trying to raise funding to support 40 rangers which would be enough to cover 400,000 acres of land that supports wildlife, people and livestock in Laikipia wildlife properties by the end of 2019. They’re hoping to expand even further the following year. Photo by @amivitale. Narok, a collared lioness, and her young cub rest in the shrubby grasslands at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. The collars are carefully fitted to maximize the lion’s comfort. With over 200 collars having been placed and 20 years of research, there has been no sign of injury or negative impact. On the contrary, a collar can save a lion’s life. Satellite collars help groups like @lionlandscapes track the movements of lions living amongst people and livestock. Real-time movement data from these collars teaches us about how lions survive in human-dominated landscapes and helps us to prevent human-lion conflict by keeping livestock away from known lion locations. And if a collared lion approaches a livestock enclosure outfitted with an alarm, the alarm will blare, scaring the lion away. With less human-wildlife conflict, all species benefit. Photo by @amivitale. Narok, a collared lioness and her young cub, rest in the shrubby grasslands at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. The collars are carefully fitted to maximize the lion’s comfort. With over 200 collars having been placed in 20 years of research, there has been no sign of injury or negative impact. On the contrary, a collar can save a lion’s life. Satellite collars help groups like @lionlandscapes track the movements of lions living amongst people and livestock. Real-time movement data from these collars teaches us about how lions survive in human-dominated landscapes, and helps us to prevent human-lion conflict by keeping livestock away from known lion locations. And, if a collared lion approaches a livestock enclosure outfitted with an alarm, the alarm will blare, scaring the lion away. With less human-wildlife conflict, all species benefit. Reposted from @stevewinterphoto I am excited to be giving my NG Live presentation “On the Trail of Big Cats” at City Springs Performing Arts Center in Atlanta this Tuesday August 14th at 8pm. A lion coming down a tree in Queen Elizabeth Park in Uganda. Loyanae Lonolngiro herds livestock outside of the enclosure where the animals sleep at night with a lion alarm outfitted by @lionlandscapes at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. In Laikipia, livestock owners have found — and are finding new ways — to coexist with lions, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs. They are amazing for doing this. We owe them enormous gratitude for being so tolerant in the face of threats to their livelihoods and even their lives. @lionlandscapes works to support these livestock owners wherever possible. Among other undertakings, @lionlandscapes rangers are trained to visit livestock enclosures, spot practices that could make livestock vulnerable to lion attacks, and help livestock owners better guard their livestock from lions. Lion Protecters in Kenya 💕Reposted from @amivitale - Photo by @amivitale.@lionlandscapes Lion Rangers gather around a fire at a boma (enclosure) in @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. Collaring for Coexistence started in 2017. This partnership between Lion Landscapes and Living with Lions provides conservation livestock owners with real-time lion movement information from GPS collars via a mobile phone app developed by @savetheelephants, allowing them to keep livestock away from lions or be on guard when lions are near. This program also tests new technologies that facilitate coexistence between people and carnivores. For example, virtual fences that warn us when lions enter areas where there is high risk of conflict, alarms that detect the approach of collared lions and warn livestock guards, and devices that scare away large carnivores by randomly shouting or flashing lights. Photo by @stevewinterphoto | “On the Trail of Big Cats" Here is a mom and her cubs in the @africanparksnetwork@Zakouma_National_Park. There are fewer than 20,000 lions left in Africa, down from 200,000 just 100 years ago - and their long-term future remains in question: they are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, lack of prey, unsustainable hunting and now poaching for their skins, bones, claws and other body parts. But projects like these show how with determination, political will, community support, and simply envisioning a better future, we can bring this species back as well as protect our last wild landscapes, benefiting both wildlife and people, and creating a better existence for all. Happy New Year! As we leave behind 2018 and enter 2019, we want to say a big Thank You to our supporters and partners. Long-term partnerships are central to the way we work; instead of tackling the many threats facing large carnivores by building a large Lion Landscapes team, we remain a small team that works to design effective programmes, and build the capacity of partner organisations and enterprises working on the same landscapes to help implement them. We believe that developing a partnership model makes all our programs more scalable and sustainable. At the end of 2018 our programmes were running over 2,500 sq. km. of important lion habitat. By the end of 2019, our goal is to have activities that we have designed and manage running over 8,000 sq. km. helping to secure more important Lion Landscapes. We could not hope to achieve this without our supporters and partners. Thank you! We are very happy to end the year having exceeded our Christmas campaign goal of raising enough money to support a new Lion Ranger Unit. Many thanks to all those who supported us to achieve this fantastic way to end the year. For those who are still considering supporting us, don't let this success put you off; our 2019 goal for the Lion Rangers is to train, equip and support 5 more units, and we have many more goals besides. We still need your support! Wishing you all a very enjoyable end to 2018 and a positive start to 2019! Image @amivitale. Livestock owners can have access to real time collared lion movements via a mobile phone App developed by @savetheelephants and Vulcan. Rather than helping livestock owners to kill the lions we have found that knowing where lions are promotes coexistence by allowing people to avoid them. Lions are not easy to co-exist with. The good news is that lions are normally afraid of people and do learn to stay away from people and their livestock, as long as the livestock is well protected and there is wild prey for lions to eat.
