📸:Not me. Today, 131 years ago my people the Jicarilla Apaches were settled onto a reservation which was established by an Executive Order from President Grover Cleveland. Here at home, this time is coined Jicarilla Day or Jicarilla Week. It is a celebration of permanent establishment after years of being shuffled from various reservations and areas in the midst of turmoil for many Native Americans, we finally had a place to call home. We were a nomadic people, moving as the seasons changed and always adapting to the numerous circumstances that we came upon. We lost many of our aboriginal territories and as colonialism progressed further into our homelands with it came the loss of precious cultural ceremonies, language and traditions. Although this attack on our existence and way of life occurred, our ancestors had a vision and a love for our people that led to ensuring that we would survive into the future with many blessings. Due to this amazing determination and persistence, we are here and will continue to be here, we exist because of our elders. In our very existence is the resistance our ancestors lived. Through us today, they carry on their fight for preservation and longevity and for our Jicarilla people to remain. Therefore, it is up to us as the receivers of such incredible blessings to strive to move our community and people forward. We must teach our children the importance of our history and how to walk into the future with prayers and strength, and never to forget that they are Jicarilla. Our elders prepared for us unselfishly and set forth a world we could live in, a world where we as Jicarilla people could benefit from their sacrifices. So, as future elders, we must do the same for our youth and the generations we will never meet. We must honor our ancestors with our perseverance in everything we do; the lives we live, the words we speak, the lessons we teach, the memories we create and the legacies we leave behind. For in all these things one constant remains and holds us all together as one, and that is the fact that we are and forever will be Jicarilla. We existed as such before a reservation and will continue

PC: James Mooney. Circa 1897. (Favorite Pic of Mine). Today February 11, 2017 marks the 130th year of my people, the Jicarilla Apaches being settled onto a reservation. Our reservation was established by President Grover Cleveland granted by his Executive Order on February 11, 1887. We were one of the last tribal nations to receive a reservation and be confined to settle in an area that was not our aboriginal homelands. This picture was taken 10 years after the permanent placement of the nomadic Jicarilla Apache people. (Iconic Dulce Rock in the background.) Clearly, it is a witness to the changes that begin to take place and the shift from being totally traditional to embracing some forms of what we now call assimilation. Despite these actions taken to eradicate my people and confine us to lives of desolation and despair, we are living and resilient still. Thankfully our elders, those that were here before us saw the necessary need to preserve and fight for the well-being of the future generations. Now because of their foresight and love of our people we are blessed with a beautiful reservation and gifts beyond measure. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, nor can they ever be repaid. All we can do as Jicarilla people is honor their lives and actions with our determination and persistence to persevere in a world that is not much different than the one they faced years ago. Continuing to cherish and protect our children, the land (animals, plants, water etc.) we are blessed with and the language and culture they fought so hard to keep are all ways of honoring the fight they led. I will never forget their struggles which allowed me to have the blessings I do today. Therefore, each day I pray, I pray for my people, my community and ask that in the next 130 years that we keep all the teachings in our minds and close to our hearts to lead us in the right direction for our children, their children and those yet to come. Ihéédń Creator, you have blessed us so.
