Flashback to a very chilly dawn in southern Greenland. I have every layer on that I could fit under my Swiss National Geographic coloured jacket, and every pocket filled with batteries to keep them warm. . The second frame is what I’m looking at, the fracture zone of the glacier where we camped at the base. The wind flowing down from the ice was almost the coldest I’ve felt. Photo @jasonedwardsng The proud contours of the face of a King. It is nigh impossible not to feel humbled by a large male lion; the sheer size of a predator that can weigh in excess of 250kg and thunder across the savannah at tens of kilometres an hour is a marvel of evolution. The sheer impact of that mass at velocity, is enough to break bones. . It’s always important to remember that the vast majority of male lions are not imbedded in a pride structure. @natgeowild Photo @jasonedwardsng Practice makes perfect, especially when the future of your genetic lineage is at stake. Male African Elephant begin to learn the art of combat from a very young age. As calf’s they push and chase each other around, testing there strength and developing their muscles. . As they grow through adolescence the mock battles become more serious, until at maturity they take on a more crucial role in the hierarchy of the herd. It’s not always about having the best light shining directly on your subject, that super-saturated hue of the golden hour. It’s a myth that you’re always in the right place at the right time, that you planned and researched exactly when and where you should be. In reality that is just social media hype. . We all do our best of course, but sometimes you happen across a scene and in those few seconds have to make a decision. Do I want a blown-out foreground or an accurate background? As is often the case, less is more. . When this Leopard descended the tree it was all over in a blink. I consciously stopped my exposure down and metered off the background. The elegant lines of the beautiful cat were enough to tell the story of my brief encounter, and I was happy! Make every moment count but don’t miss the moment yourself, it’s just a photo after all. The bond between humans and horses runs like a river through the evolution of our civilisation. What we’ve achieved would not have been possible without the domestication of this species. . From an emotional perspective, humans are inherently drawn to the intelligence and friendship that horses offer. In Australia indigenous communities form close relationships with horses that are utilised for mustering on outback cattle stations. Their horsemanship is a thing of pride and a skill they develop from childhood. . Polar Bear have become the poster child for the global warming movement. With their habitat literally melting out from underneath them this makes sense. . When a single species is used to promote an environmental campaign it’s known as a keystone or keynote species, and it is utilised to create a connection between the wider community and that ecosystem. Other examples are Giant Panda, Mountain Gorilla, Elephant and so forth. This is a well-utilised technique to assist people in valuing the natural world. After all, it’s easier to get people onboard for something furry rather than a big hairy spider! . However, there are photographers and videographers who will bastardise their imagery and the message for financial gain. The message they share is often confused and inaccurate, and this spreads misinformation and often damages a cause and hampers good science. . A perfect example is claiming every Polar Bear on land is a victim of global warming, this is not accurate. Nor is every bear on an iceberg surrounded by ocean suffering. Again, yes the polar regions are being devastated global warming but we as image makers need to be careful about the message we distribute. . Look at the world differently; cast your gaze up and down, left and right, give yourself some height and then get down low. Change your perspective, imagine life in another’s path whether that’s culturally, socioeconomically or physically. Wipe away the plethora of burdens we face as humans trying to survive an unstoppable onslaught of stimuli. . Imagine what really matters to other species and how they experience their world, see it from their perspective. The challenge of survival and the simplicity of necessity. Photo @jasonedwardsng It obviously happens, predators hunt and catch prey to survive. Humans have a fascination with these events especially when traveling in areas where big cats inhabit an ecosystem. . Leopard are difficult to find at the best of times, hunting Leopard even more so. I watched this female as she dissolved into a rock face and waited for a wildebeest herd to come close enough. When she launched it wasn’t for the closest animal, I suspect she wanted to gather enough speed to propel her mass at the significantly larger animal. . It was over in seconds, however the distance of the chase and the number of twists and turns as prey tried to outpace predator was incredible. Even at 12x frames per second the terrain covered by both species between each image was enormous. . So to answer the obvious question, even though the Leopard was striking fur off the rump of the wildebeest and at times beside the hind legs, the fleet footed herbivore outran the agile cat, just! . Photo by @jasonedwardsng ・・・ The immense power and speed of Nile Hippopotamus are legendary. These incredible aquatic mammals have graced the pages of fiction and non-fiction for centuries, mainly due to their extremely territorial behaviour that can result in serious injury or death to humans. . The shear weight of hippo jaws coupled with their enormous ivory teeth inflict terrible wounds. However, as a species they have a unique ability to heal that beggars belief when you see the fetid pools they often inhabit. . As the heat of the African day rolls on and the water in the pools warms, so does the intolerance for close company and fights between pod members break out with regularity. Avoid anything made out of the innocent voiceless souls 🙏🏼 #SaveSpecies#BeTheirVoice#ConserveAnimals#HelpThem#BeHumans#BeTheChange Repost by @reposta.app_ ——— Photo @jasonedwardsng Ocelot. The staggeringly beautiful markings on these elusive cats made them a prime target for the fur industry for decades. Even today, I come across their pelts in villages where the cats may have preyed on domestic fowl. . More disturbing are the Ocelot products I observe in Latin American markets, that are sold to tourists as rainforest souvenirs. You are not saving a species nor an individual of that species, if you purchase anything in these environments. You are not rescuing a cub, a bird, a primate, an amphibian or a reptile; you are just creating demand and a supply chain. . Photo @jasonedwardsng Healthy coral gardens are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Ocean acidification, warming water temperatures and even the poaching of corals for pet aquariums are taking their toll on ancient reef communities. A Dive Master friend recently explained to me how there’s a design trend where people have enormous coral plates in their houses and not even in an aquarium! . Reefs can and do recover, we just need to give them a little breathing space. Think about your daily choices that may impact the environment and change something, anything, no matter how small. We also think about our wider impact on our National Geographic Expeditions doing all we can to protect pristine habitats. . "A large Crabeater Seal sleeping on the pack ice in Antarctica. Crabeaters use these mobile platforms for resting, mating and gathering in groups. Although their name suggests they eat crabs in fact, they eat Antarctic krill which they sieve through specially adapted teeth." 📷 by (@jasonedwardsng) . . . . #antarctica#seal#natgeowild#jasonedwardsng#lazyday#sleepyhead#animalportrait#polar#crabeaterseal#sleepyface

"There are moments when the light sings and there is no one or nothing, in the frame to listen. There are also times when it all comes together. A female Leopard surveys a woodland at dawn from the fork of a tree. The dust and smoke laden dawn was so red and saturated I was lucky this occurred after the sun had risen a little above the horizon. I always hand-hold my Nikon 800mm so that I don’t have to delay using a tripod. Leopard don’t tolerate fiddling with tripods!" . . . . #natgeowild#jasonedwardsng#botswana#leopard#catlover#bigcat
