Un calvario che per Andrea #Conti è durato più di un anno, a causa della doppia rottura ✖️ del legamento crociato, che sembrava potesse compromettere la sua promettente carriera. Si pensava che sarebbe stato difficile rivederlo macinare la fascia come ai tempi dell’Atalanta, dove nell’annata 2016/2017 si mise in proprio con 8 gol ⚽️ e 4 assist, ma soprattutto con ottime prestazioni per tutto l’arco della stagione. Prestazioni che convinsero il duo Fassone-Mirabelli a sborsare 💵 25 milioni di euro per assicurarsi le sue prestazioni in un Milan completamente rivoluzionato. L’inizio della stagione 2017/2018 fu molto promettente, con buone prestazioni contro Crotone e Cagliari. La successiva pausa per le Nazionali segna l’inizio del periodo buio dell’esterno classe ’94: rottura del legamento crociato e stop ❌ di 6 mesi. Ritorna in panchina nel marzo dell’anno successivo, nella partita casalinga contro il Chievo. Nella tifoseria c’era molta attesa, tutti avrebbero voluto rivederlo su quella fascia, che è da molti anni uno dei problemi della squadra rossonera, ma altri problemi al ginocchio, con conseguente operazione, complicano i piani del #Milan. Soft tissue defect noted without visible Fx. The 2nd-yr orthopedic surgery resident was teaching me how to clean, wash, debride and partially close the wound with continuous sutures before sending the patient to the operation room....” — (A case from my old trauma notebook) • PS: During those 18:n months of internship abroad, trauma used to be my passion. I carried a small notebook around, filled it with interesting trauma cases. Sometimes I was allowed to take pictures for documentation, like in this patient case. I begun to think perhaps “trauma surgery” is what I should aim for in the future. And honestly I was going to peruse that dream. Until one horrible day I received the saddest news that broke my trauma-dream into million pieces. The news about my best friend “A” died in a car accident. He was the 1st friend who believed I would become a great “doctor”. A, always used to motivate me through difficult studies and exams. We lived far away from each other but he felt very close, just a click away. I wrote him several emails during a week keeping him updated about my life whom he found very interesting. I never thought it would come a day I won’t be able to reach him anymore. And seriously after all those years passing since he left, I’m still in a state of shock. Unintentionally I soon lost my interest in trauma surgery and deactivated my medical blog. I went so far and threw away my trauma-case notebook. To the hell with it all! • I thought perhaps I’ve got rid of everything. Today I went searching among my old photo albums after some “study pictures” to share and instead came across few trauma pictures. They evoked bitter sweet memories from my past, made me feel emotional. No matter what, I still like trauma surgery and who knows perhaps I’ll change my thoughs in the future. Cortisone shot? You may want to reconsider. Cortisone shots are frequently recommended by orthopedic specialists for muscle and joint pain. These shots wipe out inflammation and hopefully your pain. Sounds good right? Not so fast. Is inflammation the problem? No. Inflammation is the effect of your problem. When a tendon, muscle, or joint gets overloaded and injured, it will inflame. If you want proper healing, you need inflammation. If the inflammation is removed, the next steps in the healing process cannot occur. So your injured tendon, muscle, or joint never recovers. Removing inflammation leads to another big problem. You take away the warning that lets you know something is wrong. Your pain!!! Your problem is not your pain. Your problem is your injured body part. The purpose of your pain is to stop you from beating up your body. If you aren’t getting this warning, you keep damaging the area, and then things can get really bad. This is why your pain comes back even stronger and another injection or surgery gets recommended by your orthopedic and the cycle continues. Is that the only problem with cortisone? Nope. Cortisone actually eats away at your cartilage. So if you get an injection into your joint, that joint will be further damaged by the exact thing that is supposed to help it. Another big problem is with treating an injured tendon. The injection weakens the tendon and can even cause it to rip. The injection should never be done directly into a tendon. The only person who should be getting a cortisone shot is a pro athlete that has a huge competition in the near future, and they accept the long term consequences of the injection. Yikes... 🤕 What I initially thought was just a bruised toe due to bad running form turns out to be an annoying infection. One sleepless night, two hospital visits and some minor surgery to relieve pressure on the toe later, and I'm ready for the antibiotics to do their part. Luckily limited to no pain due to proper meds, but no sports for two weeks. Very frustrating as I was in good shape for this weekend's 10k race in the Vondelpark. Upside: in two weeks I'm travelling to Gran Canaria for a long and sunny training camp, plenty of time to plan all my activities over there! Otherwise known as, muscle strains. ⁣⁣⁣Here is a simplified view.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ When these types of injury reach a point where rehab exercises are prescribed, the goal going forward is to build endurance, strength, reduce pain & return the area to normal mobility. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Firstly, muscle fibers and connective tissues need to be grown, effectively filling the gap left by the torn muscle.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Our own bodies stem cells perform this task, a process which is aided by the supply of blood, nutrients and oxygen, provided by gentle rehab movements. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ This new muscle now needs its own supply of blood, meaning additional capillaries need to be grown. As well as a nerve supply. Both of which will not happen if the muscle is not used.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ As a result, safe use of the muscle through rehab exercises assist the torn muscle to regrow and add both the blood and nerve supplies it needs to return to normal. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ In addition, rehab mobility work can bring the range of motion back to normal levels, and all together return the muscle to a good level of function and hopefully remove the pain. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #rehab⁣⁣#zerozerothirty⁣⁣
