It’s hard to let go of my trip to Banff for #attaELEVATE 🇨🇦 because it was a bit of a life-changer between the natural beauty of @banff_lakelouise, the learning experiences provided by @adventure.travel_ & @travelalberta and most importantly to me: the people-focused moments I had because of @indigenouscanada. Back in my feed before my stories of India, you can read about most of those but if you swipe left you can see more from my day with Jason Carter [Cree Nation] and Bridget Ryan. They taught us how to sculpt soapstone into a piece of aboriginal art depicting the iconic mountain ranges of the Banff area. Even though I grew up as the daughter of an artist and I’ve experienced almost all mediums, I was challenged and entertained by this in a way I hadn’t previously been. Not that I need any more reminders of Canada in order to keep my love for the country with me always but I do love seeing the sculpture that I made that day. It always brings a smile to my face because of the association it has to the people I was with when I made it and everything I learned that day — and it’s an activity that wasn’t just for us, you too can book it at the gallery in Banff when you visit the area. Start with the @thecarterryangallery profile for more info. 🎨 #MyBanff#hostedtravel#ExploreAlberta#JasonCarterArt#CarterRyanGallery

When I woke up at @fairmontcll, the air was so crisp and cold that I knew it would be perfect for some dawn landscape photography. My instinct rewarded me with this vista just to the left of the main building. There’s a stream that flows into the lake that didn’t freeze all the way over and right at the spot where it forms a small pool before joining the lake, was this scene. A near perfectly still reflection. I held my breath, not wanting to cause a ripple as I knelt down to capture the moment with my @sonyalpha a7R II held just above the water. No one else was around and if I’d had longer, I would have carved myself a little chair into the snowbank so I could have sat and meditated over the beauty of nature for a few minutes. Meditation seems to be all the rage these days and yet I still struggle to do it. Unless, I’m out in a location as beautiful as this was, far from the noise of a city and seemingly even further from the stresses that life can bring our way! Can’t wait to get back to Canada a few more times this year to see other areas in other seasons. Alberta is such a stunning province and Canada in general is rapidly becoming one of my favorite countries to explore. 🇨🇦 #attaELEVATE#mybanff#hostedtravel#sonya7rii#sonyalpha • Shout out to @photojbartlett who so kindly lent me his Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 lens which made this wide shot possible. I’m now itching to buy it for travel work!

The peace, serenity & cool temperature of this moment in the woods above @fairmontcll seem very far away at the minute, as I write this caption sitting on the beach in Tel Aviv. After only sharing a snippet or two in my Stories here on Instagram from my job in Israel for a private client — I’ve received an extraordinary amount of hate mail calling me the worst names and a record number of unfollows. . It’s upsetting but it’s not surprising. One of the reasons I tend toward travel jobs in places such as Canada and Europe is that I feel those are destinations which generally inspire people and do not offend. . But in my heart I can’t live as someone who only stays in the safe waters of a calm river, never braving the rapids. If we do not ever challenge our own ways of thinking, and our prejudices, how will we ever make the world a better place? . That being said, if you only want to travel to places of peace and serenity then I would highly recommend @banff_lakelouise. The morning snowshoe hike in which @walkingontravels took this photo of me is one of the most wonderful mornings I’ve had in my many decades of life on this beautiful, complicated planet. It was truly restorative!! ❤️ #mybanff#thisisadventure#banfflakelouise#fairmontlakelouise#obermeyer#hostedtravel#attaelevate

Do you like fishing alone or with friends? Comment below! . I have always been partial to solo trips. . That being said, the right person on a fishing trip can make all the difference in the world. . Meet @daxmessett. Dax is a host with @flywatertravel. . Every year we look forward to having Dax and his clients here at @skeenaspeyfishing. He’s just a really pleasant guy to have in the boat. Add to that his massive wealth of steelhead fishing knowledge and it’s not hard to see why he has such happy clients. . A hosted trip is kind of like going on a fishing trip to a far away river with a buddy who is helpful and also wants you to catch more fish than them. . Now you may be saying to yourself, “this is ridiculous. People like this don’t exist! My buddies are cool but they always think it’s their turn to fish the run first and they definitely aren’t taking my picture when I land a fish!” . This is why people like hosted travel. Not only do you get to hang out with someone like Dax and soak up a bit of his coolness, you also have the advantage of his experience and advice. His primary objective is making sure you have a positive and memorable experience. . If you want to learn more about our hosted trips click on the email or phone link in my bio and get in touch with us today! . #flyfishing#hostedtravel#flywatertravel#skeenaspey#fishing . Or want to take? • This is my mum @paintthenight taking time to stop and smell the lilacs (my favorite) during our recent trip to Paris. Do you like to visit museums when you travel? • Since I wanted to do a mix of cliché and less expected things during this most recent trip to Paris with my mum via a job for @airfrance - I was so thrilled when @parisjetaime offered us two Paris PassLib booklets to use for the duration of our trip. It includes access to le Metro, soooo many museums, plus a bus tour and a boat ride on the Seine. It was that pass which enabled us to make an unplanned stop @madparis late one afternoon as we were walking down Rue de Rivoli. Because we didn’t need to take the time to buy tickets or wait in line, we were all set to just stroll right in basically and enjoy the exhibits without delay. We wandered down darkened hallways punctuated with glittering jewels, black and white photos and punk art motifs enthralled with the strange yet beguiling mix of decorative art history. Yet it was this view from an upper balcony that caused me to pause the longest. I can’t deny that old or new, I have a love affair with architectural vignettes. Particularly those featuring leading lines. It’s that distraction which I’ve given over to a lot more lately in an effort to have a tiny bit more of a “theme” to my feed. After years and years of making my primary living from photography, it struck me this year that I still don’t have a signature of any kind. In fact, I have many. This type of moment is one and if you don’t mind, I think I’ll continue to seek them out to share with you. 🙏🏼 Merci #parisjetaime pour la PassLib. ❤️ We loved having it and would highly recommend purchasing it for your next trip to Paris. #hostedtravel#madparis#alanament#archilovers#leadinglines#shotoniphonex

Every trip to Paris is wildly different for me, always depending on who I am with or whether I am traveling alone. When @airfrance asked if I’d review their Business Class product with my mum for an early Mother’s Day I was excited to try and show her a combination of the more cliché aspects of my favorite city and hopefully a few things that were a little more “off the beaten path.” I think, and hope, that’s what we ended up accomplishing. What do you think @paintthenight? • Yet I have to admit it was often the more cliché spots that did thrill me most during this visit. I’d never been to Paris when it was SO warm (nearly hot) and SO green; so they had a new face on them that I’d never seen before. Standing here on the edge of the Tuileries, looking down the gauntlet of marvelous hedges to the majesty of the Louvre, hearing the birds in the trees, feeling the sunshine on my face, and my favorite language swirling around me as people came and went...was some kind of heaven. I grew fed up with NYC after 8 years of living there part or full time and I’ll tell you the reason I’ve never tried to move to Paris even though I dream of it: I don’t want to lose the love like I did with New York. I want to always believe that Paris is a good idea. I always want to be a lover and not a hater. That, I can do when I’m only a visitor. And that’s why I know there will always be a next time and I will never be done visiting Paris or in fact any part of France. Merci for always being willing to come with me when I do 🙏🏼😘 #parisjetaime#atoutfrance#meetparis#seeparis#franceisintheair#hostedtravel

2.7K 75
Before I fully move on from India stories, I wanted to share our Jodhpur adventures with @coxandkingsusa. The first portrait was taken during our tour of the spice and vegetable market in town. We had just gotten out of our rickshaws, walked a short distance and turned the corner into the market from a street that almost felt deserted there was so little happening — and after we turned the corner, the difference could not have been more pronounced; it was an immediate deep dive into sensory overload and an immersion into organized chaos. And yet, this gentleman and his vegetable stall caught my eye right away. I don’t know if it was the vibrancy of the green, which along with blue is one of my two favorite colors, or if it was the intensity of his gaze. But he saw me see him, I immediately communicated that I wanted to take his picture, he said yes and I did. After I showed him the photo, the brightest smile lit up his face and he seemed so happy. I don’t know his name but I will always remember the way his face lit up toward the end of our interaction. Afterward we all found ourselves absorbed into the market’s ebbs and flows and only a few other instances to take someone’s photo occurred before we went back to the hotel. I’ve included them here; the last of which, the man with the bags of flowers, resulted in my being gifted a rose more fragrant than any other I’ve ever encountered anywhere in the world. I even packed it in my luggage going home and though the rose crumbled in transit, the smell of it is still on the scarf I wrapped it in. It’s embedded in that fabric just like the smiles of the people we met in India are forever imprinted on my heart and in my mind. Thank you for this tour #coxandkingsusa 🙏🏼 #hostedtravel#sponsoredtrip#IncredibleIndia#PortraitsOfIndia

Thank you all so much for the incredible response to my last three posts from Jaipur! I don’t feel the rest of what I captured in the city can really compare to those images so I’m moving on to Jodhpur. This was our last & final stop on our mini tour of India with @tajhotels where again @coxandkingsusa handled our tours and excursions. It was during our tour of Mehrangarh Fort that I took the first photo in this series of a man guarding one of the rooms you can look in but cannot walk into. I’m sharing more than my usual amount of portraits from this trip because to me, it’s the people that make India truly special. 😉 We actually had a pretty hilarious and heart-warming interaction with him that you’d never guess at when you see his almost stern face. So swipe right to see a video with him & @twheat. It showed me that anywhere in the world, despite language barriers, you can almost always communicate with people when you choose to lead with a smile. Then I’ve included three more images from inside the fort that could not crop to @instagram size without losing something from the photo. Not my usual style but I just really wanted to share them. I hope you enjoy! • Mehrangarh is one of the largest forts in India and has stunning views of the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur from almost every vantage point since it’s 410 feet above the city. Construction began in the 1400’s by Rao Jodha and continued with his descendants over 500 years. Most of what is visitable today dates to the 17th century, and the time of Maharaja Ajit Singh. Rudyard Kipling once said it was, “a palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun.” If you’re into geology, you might be interested to know that the fort sits on a Malani Igneous Suite Contact that has been declared a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India. It’s easier to see the significance of that from further away and I’ll be sharing a photo that illustrates that a little better in the next few days. 🇮🇳 #coxandkingsusa#mehrangarhfort#jodhpur#hostedtravel

We love hearing @kirstenalana 's stories about her travels through India with @coxandkingsusa !! NEW: in Stories, a whole day in the city of Jaipur 🇮🇳 • Visiting “The Pink City” of Jaipur in Rajasthan last week with @tajhotels was a dream come true. It lived up to the hype and in fact exceeded my expectations in every way. I took so many photos while we were there that I could share for a month just about this portion of our trip and not run out of content!! We had the most wonderful guide, Yogesh, with @coxandkingsusa who helped us have such captivating experiences outside the grounds of @rambaghpalace. It was while we were at City Palace in a special tower that costs extra to visit, that I took this photo overlooking the city. In the distance you can see the tall aspect of Jantar Mantar, like a triangle with a tower on top. You can see some of the various courtyards of the Palace and it’s a good reference to help you understand that despite its nickname, the entire city of Jaipur is not ALL painted pink. The part of it that is, dates to 1876 when the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria visited. Maharaja Ram Singh wanted to welcome them with distinction and since pink denoted the color of hospitality - a sort of salmon shade of pink became de rigueur then and has stuck around into the present day, now by law. No matter the color of where we visited, I found the city to be enchanting and alluring. 🇮🇳 #coxandkingsusa#IncredibleIndia#BeautifulJaipur#igersjaipur#jaipurcity#jaipurlove#hostedtravel#sponsoredtrip#shotoniphonex 📷: @kirstenalana

Our Mumbai at Dawn tour with @coxandkingsusa was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had in India. While you don’t have to be staying at a Taj Hotel in order to book the tour, we were at @tajmahalmumbai where we departed before the sun came up to head first to an area near Victoria Terminus. There we witnessed men sorting newspapers by hand on the ground which would be distributed all around the city I was captivated by the noir light and the almost quiet freneticism of the operation. From there we visited the vegetable market, the flower market and eventually some of the group walked around the fish market while I went with our driver to taste freshly made Masala Chai at a stand on the street. In the middle we stopped to see the laundry which I talked about in my last post. These three photos are from the Flower Market Did you catch my Stories where I tried to share our entire tour? From #coxandkingsusa here’s their description of the tour which I like so much I just wanted to directly quote them: “Seeing this lively city wake up, gives you deep cultural insights into the real Mumbai, one that goes beyond the glossy glass facades and urban boardrooms. You experience the underbelly of this magnificent city, and understand what makes Mumbai tick. You will find yourself at the clamorous and chaotic docks, where amidst understanding the life and times of the Koli fisher-folk the original inhabitants of Mumbai you will see the arrival and grading of 25 tonnes of fish. Witness a one-of-its kind fish auction of the famous Bombay Duck. You will be right in the center of all the action, as thousands of illiterate vendors sort out newspapers of seven different language that too in the middle of the road. You will understand the logistics of the food distribution in the city as 100 tonnes of meat, fruits and vegetables enter the various markets. These markets are not only a great introduction to the people of Mumbai, but also a photographer’s dream come true. What’s interesting is that when you walk the same lanes a few hours later, you wouldn’t find any evidence of the morning’s flurry” #hostedtravel#mumbaiindia#streetportraits#sonyalpha 📷: @kirstenalana

Follow along @kirstenalana's trip with @coxandkingsusa ! So glad you are loving it!! The first time I came to India in 2015, I visited only Agra and Mumbai. That year I stood in the exact spot I did when I took this photo yesterday, and in those moments I didn’t get it. I didn’t yet LOVE India. It wasn’t a horrible experience, it simply wasn’t one that made me fall in love with the country or the people that make it SO special. This time when I stood in this spot overlooking Dhobi Ghat, after THE MOST INCREDIBLE pre-dawn tour of #Mumbai with @coxandkingsusa alongside new friends from @tajhotels and photographers I’ve admired for years, after several talks with locals who are some of the warmest and kindest people I’ve ever met in my life...... I got it. I found that deep well of love for India that finds many a traveler who chooses to interact with the country on a level that’s profound and almost unmatched anywhere else on the globe. India is a land of the most intense contrasts I’ve ever found but it is in those contrasts that is found a beauty which can’t be put into words. The complexity of this country and this city baffles people who come to study it and enchants travelers like me who crave opportunities to learn. • Speaking of learning, Dhobi Ghat is Mumbai’s 140-year-old open-air laundromat. Estimates place the number of pieces of laundry that come through here each day at over half a million pieces. From above, it looks like perhaps a form of organized chaos but the system is known to be uber efficient and reliable. Much of the work is done by hand without modern technology. • Can’t wait to share more photos from our tour with #coxandkingsusa but in the meantime you should check out @twheat, @alice_gao, @ananewyork, @noahleh & @dlcuratolo who have already begun sharing portraits of some of the incredible locals we met in Bombay nay Mumbai. 🙏🏼🇮🇳 #incredibleindia#dhobighat#shotoniphone#shotoniphonex#hostedtravel#sponsoredtrip 📷: @kirstenalana

After a few days in and around Calgary to #ExploreAlberta before #attaELEVATE, we finally began to make our way up into the Canadian Rockies. I took these photos as part of an ice walk with Jordan Ede of Mahikan Trails. They offer walking and snowshoe tours from the perspective of their Indigenous Culture. From bushcraft to plant medicine, tanning hides and making moccasins, they provide the opportunity for visitors to learn time honoured skills which are part of their Indigenous traditions. Jordan taught us all about the plants that we passed as we walked to the canyon and once we were in the canyon, he pointed out pictographs that are 4,000 years old. It was awe inspiring to see and learn about evidence of people living here that long ago. Now the walk itself might not be for the faint of heart in winter because as you’ll see when you swipe left, in winter it requires crampons. And you’re walking ON what is a deep, raging river at other times of the year!! Right now it’s an uneven yet stunning expanse of solid ice, the color of which changes with the light. All that being said, Jordan provided the equipment we needed and he made sure we were safe. I never felt uneasy and it was so much fun!! The first photo shows the wide entrance to the Canyon, guarded by soaring peaks. The last two show where the tour ends with a few frozen waterfalls in a sort of glen. The spot seemed so unspoiled and wild in a way and yet the pictographs Jordan showed us prove that Indigenous people have been coming here for at least 4,000 years. Mahikan Trails is not on IG either but you can learn more on their website at Mahikan.ca #HostedTravel#ExploreCanada#TravelAlberta#mahikantrails#indigenouscanada#sonya7rii#sonyalpha#grottocanyon

There we witnessed men sorting newspapers by hand on the ground which would be distributed all around the city. I was captivated by the noir light and the almost quiet freneticism of the operation. After 24 hours of flying — made very pleasant by @klm & @jetairways flying our group in Business Class from JFK — our #tajness group has made it to Mumbai. [Which was once called Bombay and is still referenced that way by some of my followers who have messaged me after seeing my Stories announcing our arrival...] However you refer to the city, it’s home to our first stop on a tour of India with @tajhotels: The Taj Mahal Palace. Built in 1903, which was 21 years before the nearby Gateway of India, it has welcomed maharajas and dignitaries for over a century. This grand dame watches over the causeway that hugs the Arabian Sea and is near to the city’s financial hub, parliament, stadium and shopping districts. In 2015 when I first visited India, I remember driving by and thinking what a stunning building this was from the outside. Now that I’m inside, I’m happy to report that it lives up to the hype and then some. Like a landmark from a bygone era, this hotel has all the grandeur and the elegance you’d expect. However, it’s in the kindness and generosity of the staff that I find the most comfort. And it’s that level of service, even more than the design, that to me earns this hotel its luxury status. 🇮🇳 #treasuredbytajtraveler#hostedtravel#sponsoredtrip#incredibleindia#hoteldesign#luxuryhotel#historichotel

Excited to be walking the flats of Christmas Island in a couple of days! A new location is always extremely exciting, on the other hand can be tough to decide on what to pack... the second time around packing seems a bit easier, as you have learned from previous experiences. Got some new flies to test on those bones and more meat to toss at the GT’s! In a harsh environment like CXI, salt water takes a toll on gear, so it’s best to bring quality gear, because you never know what you may catch! #flywatertravel#christmasisland#hostedtravel#travel#flyfishing#flyfishingphotography#optoutside#saltlife#flatsfishing#gianttrevally#bonefish#sageflyfish#galvanflyreels#rioproducts#patagoniaflyfishing#passport#adios#love#instagood#triggerfish#catchandrelease@flywatertravel@steelie_danny@sageflyfish@rioproducts@galvanflyreels

After the hike I describe in my last post and before we checked into the @fairmontcll - our #attaELEVATE#ExploreAlberta group stopped in the town of Canmore for lunch at @blakecanmore. If you’ve followed me for a long time you know food isn’t necessarily MY THING but at the same time when I have a meal that I love soooo much that I’d feel bad unless you get to experience it too, well, then I talk about food. And this is just such an occasion. BLAKE has varying menus depending on what time of day you arrive but one thing that will be consistent is the homemade spices, sauces and the singular twist that goes into every dish. There’s an Aussie flair to the menu but I wouldn’t call it Australian food. Certainly it’s Canadian but then again what is Canadian food?! What BLAKE is is vegetable-forward dishes with a spicy kick and a depth of flavor that will stick with you long after you’ve left. We approached it family style, ordering quite a few dishes from both the lunch and brunch menus and there was hardly a crumb left by the time we were done. From the chili-spiced broccoli to the charcoal breakfast sandwich to the yam salad and the eggs-over-breakfast-fries, our afternoon at BLAKE was a culinary tour de force. Don’t pass through Canmore without stopping and to fuel you up for later, pop in to @ravecoffeecan before you keep going to Lake Louise or elsewhere. This moment is just another reason why MAN I LOVE CANADA [and in particular Alberta]!!!! 🇨🇦 🍴#blakecanmore#foodietravel#explorecanada#travelalberta#shotoniphone#yumgasm#hostedtravel#visitcanmore
