The British Art Studies editorial team are delighted to present Issue 11 – Theatres of War: Experimental Performance in London, 1914–1918 and Beyond. - Curated by Dr Grace Brockington, senior lecturer at the University of Bristol, Theatres of War is an online exhibition that explores the visual culture of experimental performance that developed against the grain of mainstream theatre in London during the First World War. - At the heart of the exhibition is the first ever staging of The Ballet of the Nations – Vernon Lee’s 1915 pacifist satire. Produced as a feature film by contemporary dance company Impermanence, and directed by Roseanna Anderson and Joshua Ben-Tovim, The Ballet of the Nations is a creative rearticulation of Vernon Lee’s 1915 text set to intricate and stylised dance pieces. - Theatres of War can be explored for free at www.britishartstudies.ac.uk . - #BritishArtStudies#BAS#digitalpublishing#online#digital#gif#dance#history#art#dancehistory#ballet#theatresofwar#performance#london#arthistory#historyofart#vernonlee#onlineexhibition#exhibition#openaccess#theballetofthenations#education#free#learnonline

“No rendering can really simulate the way the light bounces off the bronze panel. From some angles, it’s almost a mirror, and from others it’s a matte surface.” ~ Michael Arad A superbly cast antique French bronze figure of a maiden and cherub by Emile Pierre Eugene Herbert (1828-1893), circa 1850 in date. This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced by using the traditional “lost wax” process. The statue features a seated maiden dressed in a classical flowing gown, bathing a winged cherub’s feet on a pedestal font with claw feet. Pierre-Eugene Emile Herbert was a renown 19th Century French sculptor who exhibited at many important exhibitions including the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855 and the Great Exhibitions in London in 1862 and 1867. At the latter, the sculptor was awarded a gold medal for his work. Today, his works are housed in the collections of prestigious public institutions such as the National Gallery in Washington DC and the Musee D’Orsay in Paris. #antiques#antique#antiquebronze#antiquebronzestatue#antiqueart#antiquestatue#fineantiques#decorativearts#decorativeantiques#frenchantiques#frenchart#frenchsculpture#antiquesculpture#lostwaxcasting#19thcenturyart#19thcenturyantiques#19thcenturysculpture#bronzestatue#bronzestatues#emilehebert#cherubstatue#classicalart#darkbronze#art#historyofantiquity#historyofart#sculpture#sculptureart#regentantiques

руки 🙏🏻 ⠀ Bы видeли кaртину Альбрeхта Дюрeра "Руки молящeгося"? Знaете ли вы иcтopию создaния этой кaртины? Portrait of a Lady (date unknown) | Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) | 🇦🇹 . . « Portrait of a Lady depicts a portrait of a female figure, composed in an unusually lively expressionistic style. It was acquired by the Galleria Ricci-Oddi in Piacenza in 1925. In 1996, X-ray analysis revealed that the portrait was an overpainted version of Klimt's lost work Portrait of a Young Lady (in hat and with scarf), which disappeared in 1917. The original portrait showed a woman with whom Klimt is believed to have had a love affair, but after she died suddenly, he painted over the work. » (wikipedia.org)

Antoni Tàpies was a Spanish artist known for his mixed-media paintings that incorporated marble dust, found objects, and resin as seen in his seminal work Grey and Green Painting (1957). Social themes run throughout his highly textured and tactile paintings, which were influenced by his experience of the politics and environment of the wartime and the postwar state of the Spanish government. “If one draws things in a manner which provides only the barest clue to their meaning, the viewer is forced to fill in the gaps by using his own imagination,” he reflected. “He is compelled to participate in the creative act, which I consider very important.” Born on December 13, 1923 in Barcelona, Spain, he originally studied law while pursuing art, he became a friend of his fellow Catalan Joan Miró who was an integral influence on Tàpies’s early Surrealist work. Incorporating the scrawling marks of Paul Klee, Tàpies joined the Art Informel movement, as his work turned toward the abstract and seemingly anticipated the Arte Povera movement. Over the several decades to follow, the artist became more nuanced in his choice of materials and attempted to convey the accidental marks of walls and graffiti. He died on February 6, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. - - #cardigallery#cardigallerymilano#cardigallerylondon#antonitapies#tapies#artistincardicollection#artwork#contemporaryart#contemporaryartist#artist#art#photography#historyofart

Large Arch, 1971, Henry Moore in front of First Christian Church, 1942, by Eliel

Large Arch, 1971, Henry Moore in front of First Christian Church, 1942, by Eliel Saarinen • Chosen for the public plaza after library architect I.M. Pei suggested that Moore’s amorphous style would contrast well with the rectilinear qualities of his library and First Christian Church, It is the centerpiece of the library plaza that is paved with bricks and the arch sits in the center of a slightly raised roundabout. Henry Moore said he was inspired by nature and created the sculpture so that it could be walked through and around. Large Arch was sand cast in bronze in fifty sections in West Germany and shipped up the Mississippi River to the Ohio, then up the interstate. Similar, but smaller, bronze arches by Henry Moore are on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Lynden Sculpture Garden in Milwaukee, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. This is the largest of its kind in the United States. Xenia and J. Irwin Miller commissioned the sculpture and donated it to the library. Perhaps no piece of architecture in Columbus pleased Miller as much as the family’s gift of the Large Arch, a bronze sculpture by Henry Moore. He wrote, “We have just finished a remarkable new plaza here. It is surrounded by a 30-year-old church designed by Eliel Saarinen, and a brand new county library by I.M. Pei. In its center is one of the largest sculptures Henry Moore has ever done, commissioned for the spot. This is now one of the great [public] spaces in America … in a most real and human way it has now become a physical and spiritual center of our town. It has made the plaza of which it is the focus one of the finest spaces in America.” • #architecture#architecturephotography#architecturelovers#architect#elielsaarinen#millerhouse#columbusindiana#design#landscapedesign#interiordesign#alexandergirard#kevinroche#travel#travelphotography#wonderlust#columbus#indiana#artblog#travelblogger#weekend#historyofart#saarinen#modern#modernism#pritzkerprize#garden#windows#henrymoore

Can you believe, this painting to be of a Queen?? Well, difficult because not only the Mughal Empire, but the other Islamic empires of the time (Safavids / Ottomans) had never seen a painting like this! 😮 On any given day, #nurjahan can be the only #mondaymotivation you’d ever need! . In this painting by Abul Hasan, she’s holding up a musket, loading it but looks like a nobleman. Now that’s what makes me wonder - would the painting have been less powerful if her hair had been open? 👸🏻 . According to Jahangir’s 📔 Tuzuk-I-Jahangiri, she killed two tigers 🐅 with one shot each, and then two others with two shots each - all this while sitting atop an 🐘 elephant Howdah! (Think balancing skills - because that elephant would be moving) 💪🏼 . . Even for an accomplished woman like NurJahan, there are hardly any written records about her. Which is why, art must be the way to decode her life - and skills. 💪🏼 Where did she learn how to shoot ? 💪🏼 What was she like, as a leader in battles ? 💪🏼 Were the noblemen of the court threatened by her? 💪🏼 Did Abul Hassan make this painting of his own accord, or was this sponsored? . In our latest post feat. a podcast by @whatshernamepodcast with author Ruby Lal discover 6 objects and stories about the Empress! Be amazed 😍 . . If you’re an educator reading this post, there are SO many ways to include this in your teaching (Ideas in the post)! . . . . . #thesemughalwomen#queens#musket#hunting_the_wild#womenshistorymonth#womenshistory#mughal#herstory#teachingideas#historyclass#educatorlife#teachinghistory#rampurrazalibrary#museums#archives#rarecollection#portraitpainting#historyofart#mughalart#womenleaders#dressedlikeaboss#ladybosslifestyle@indianwomenblog@alephbookco@jaypore
