Today I am taking some time out for some self care with my hubby. We live in a w
Today I am taking some time out for some self care with my hubby. We live in a world where it’s the norm for both parents to work full time to make life easier and to give our little people the best start in life. This week we have been juggling work commitments, family moments and quality time together. Tomorrow is our Wedding Anniversary and so we’ve decided to have a lazy day in our Pjs with our little dude watching tele and snuggling up. Sometimes we have to remember that to teach our children how to relax and be calm, we need to show them that we can sometimes do nothing ourselves and reflect. We have to know when to stop and take time out. We need to show them that it’s okay to have some ‘me’ time. Health and wellbeing starts with us teaching our children that even adults need to recognise our emotions and know when to self soothe. Family should always come first, wellbeing should come before work and quality time together should be a priority. Today I celebrate my family, my friends and those that support me through my journey of trying to make a difference to the lives of children through mental health and wellbeing 💛

It's really important for their mental health, to have some quiet time. Colouring really seems to calm ours down, especially when they are feeling angry or frustrated. After football practice this week, they all came in in a hyper mood but quickly relaxed with our colour in zoo table. Jemma and I also got involved...losing track of teatime! ⠀ The brilliant thing about our range of colour in tablecloths and placemats, is that once coloured (or food stained!), they can be popped into the wash and they can start colouring all over again! They are also a great way to help encourage the children to stay at the table during family meals rather than be given a tablet or phone. 6.45am - 19th May 2016 • • A date and time etched on my brain and in my life forever. Standing on the top of Everest was one of the most surreal moments of my life, and not because of the lower oxygen at that great altitude • • As I sit here in the comfort of a full compliment of oxygen at 6.45am 3 years later, I still vividly remember that it had been a mentally tough expedition and I nearly walked off on our 2nd summit attempt due to the white noise of nasty people. Sat in my tent at Camp 2 at 6400m 3 days before Negative Nelly was having a field day, telling me I didn’t need this rubbish in my life and I wasn’t capable of pulling off this feat. Oh Nelly went on and on. Then Positive Polly chipped in with something very simple. ‘The short term pain you are going through is insignificant to the long term disappointment of giving up if you choose to do that. Keep on going, for you and no-one else’ • • And I did just that but I wasn’t on my own, you were all there with me and I felt your wishes and wills behind me all the way • • As I left the relative safety of my tent at the South Col at 8000m at 8.30pm on 18th May the @blackeyedpeasglobal chirped in my ear ‘Tonight’s going to be a good night’. Perfect timing • • Everest is just one chapter of this story I never thought I would tell. Interestingly enough many of the children are well versed in the value of Letting Go. . A big part of Mindfulness practice is the art of Letting Go. In western society and as a culture we often struggle to Let Go . Holding on tightly often does more damage than Letting Go. Letting go promotes acceptance and peace and of course reduces suffering . So the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is body image, which is one of the reasons we're picking this book today; 'Specs for Rex' by Yasmeen Ismail. When Rex gets his big, round, red specs he HATES them and will do anything to cover them up - whether it be hiding them in a sandwich or wrapping toilet paper around his face! But in the end his specs not only win him a gold star but he also makes a new friend and he learns to love them. We recommend this book for anyone who has a child that might be getting glasses or feels self-conscious about their appearance. It can be hard feeling like you look "different", but it's important (though sometimes very difficult!) to remember that those differences may be the reason that others find you to be amazing! I sent this to a family chat and the response that I got was that it looked like a fancy breakfast, like that’s how we eat every morning (I know it’s nothing extravagant but we are usually a weetabix and toast family). I mean, imagine how much it would cost, blueberries aren’t the cheapest fruit and we aren’t made of money! 🙈 . . My point is that this picture was set up to look amazing (I never take pictures of weetabix and toast), like we enjoy these yummy breakfasts a lot, when the reality is very different. We only had it because I found a pancake mix that we hadn’t used on pancake day, I went shopping yesterday so we have some nice fruit, oh and the maple syrup....it’s a McDonald’s one that I found in the cupboard 😂 It sounds a lot less glamorous now, doesn’t it?! . . The reality behind pictures is often extremely different. They are portrayed in a certain way to make us believe something. Pictures of the ‘perfect’ body, the ‘perfect’ skin, the ‘perfect’ figure and even the ‘perfect’ food, have been created to make you think that this person or persons life has no imperfections. . . Don’t believe everything that you see....the person you think is ‘perfect’ has things that they dislike about themselves too! . . This week is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek CHICKS frequently receive referrals for children who are dealing with various mental well-being issues. Through our respite breaks we support children and young people with low self-esteem and low-level anxiety, and we know that the experiences that we provide can have positive outcomes for young people with these emotional needs. In the last twelve months we've seen the level of well-being needs dramatically increase. In 2018, CHICKS received dozens of referrals for children who we were unable to offer a standard CHICKS break, as their level of need was too high. We also identified a number of children, who attended a CHICKS break, who we felt would have benefited more from a break dedicated to their well-being. As a result of our extensive experience in providing respite breaks, our staff skills, and the set-up of our retreats we feel CHICKS is in a position to diversify our breaks to specifically support young people experiencing low levels of well-being. Which is why we have created our new Well-being Breaks - carefully tailored breaks for a maximum of 12 young people per break tailored to their specific needs. And with a high adult to child ratio on these breaks it means there is the time throughout the week to focus on the individual well-being of each young person and offer them appropriate support. What is Self-Harm?

Self-harm is when somebody intentionally damages or injures
What is Self-Harm? Self-harm is when somebody intentionally damages or injures their body. It's usually a way of coping with or expressing overwhelming emotional distress. Sometimes when people self-harm, they feel on some level that they intend to die. More than half of people who die by suicide have a history of self-harm. But the intention is more often to punish themselves, express their distress, or relieve unbearable tension. Sometimes it's a mixture of all three. Self-harm can also be a cry for help. Getting help If you're self-harming, you should see your GP for help. They can refer you to healthcare professionals at a local community mental health service for further assessment. This assessment will result in your care team working out a treatment plan with you to help with your distress. Treatment for people who self-harm usually involves seeing a therapist to discuss your thoughts and feelings, and how these affect your behaviour and wellbeing. They can also teach you coping strategies to help prevent further episodes of self-harm. If you're badly depressed, it could also involve taking antidepressants or other medication. I attended a meeting on Friday with all head teachers involved in the Jenby's in School project to provide them with lots of exciting Jenby's in schools updates...and to talk them through the FABULOUS outcome/impact data for term 2! . I am SO proud of this project and what we have been able to achieve by working closely with schools and parents/carers. . I wanted to share with you all some of our AMAZING results from term 2: ✨ 32% increase in children's ability to talk about, understand and manage their emotions. ✨ 39% increase in children's ability to recognise, understand and manage feelings of worry and anxiety. ✨ 43% increase in children feeling equipped to manage difficult emotions. ✨ The impact we are seeing in the children's learning, understanding and confidence to manage difficult emotions through attending Jenby's in Schools 6 weeks groups (45-60 mins per week) is phenomenal!! . They develop armor, a shield, to protect their true self from that harm. Get moving with your kids and for your kids!⁣ ⁣ May is Mental Health Awareness Month.⁣ ⁣ If we want to raise strong, resilient kids we must start teaching them to care for their health AND their mental health by changing habits now. ⁣ ⁣ Exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health. Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, and ADHD. It relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood by increasing serotonin levels. ⁣ ⁣ Beyond that- what happens when we exercise is a model for how we live our lives! It can teach us to set goals and work towards them, to rely on ourselves to push through when things get hard, to overcome obstacles that get in our way, and to feel pride and accomplishment when we have met goals. It is empowering and reminds that we have everything we need to succeed inside of us. ⁣ ⁣ Moms— we need to model this habit and even make time to move with our kids! ⁣ ⁣ This year at my school we hosted “Movement with Mom” instead of Muffins with Mom. I was so proud to lead the warm up and walk with the kids and families who attended. There were so many times that I wanted to step in and fulfil my innate need to nurture by helping her with this task, which had been going on for some time before I got the camera out. But giving into my need would have taken away from her own need: to learn, discover and experience reward for persevering. This is just one tiny example of what parents face, as we watch our children grow, and walk that fine line of nurturing/helping to make things right and safe, and letting go/ allowing them to learn from their own challenges, thereby creating a more resouceful human who is more ready for life in the real world. ~ The true nurturing comes in when we’re able to step back and allow our children to face life’s challenges and have their own learning experiences - not rushing in to help or to protect them or take on their challenges as our own. ~ True nurturing is recognising the essence of your child, and supporting her to develop her personality as authentically as possible to align with the essence of her being. ~ True nurturing comes by recognising when we need to let our child lead and honour the choice he has made to help build his confidence and social skills - even if their choice means they didn’t listen to what you asked or differs from what you wanted. ~ True nurturing is leading as a fully aware, connected & falliable human, and being that person that your child can learn from - taking what they need from what they see. ~ This is my own opinion, simply based on my own self reflection. This is me yesterday doing another assembly as part of #mentalhealthawarenessweek2019. The theme this time was our wandering minds. 💛 We discussed how our minds can sometimes focus on worries, and, as our minds are very good at telling stories, how these worries might not actually always be true... We also looked at how practicing gratitude can make a big difference to our overall well-being. 💛 The kids listened beautifully and were so engaged in the practices we did together. I've had lots of feedback from teachers reporting sightings of children using the breathing techniques I taught them on Monday in school tests this week and around school in general. Which is amazing, only after a 10 minute assembly talk! Turn those negative voices of self doubt into positive affirmations-positive words we say to ourselves. Instead of saying I’m not good enough change it to I am worth it.
