On July 19, 2013, in an event celebrated the world over, our Cassini spacecraft slipped into Saturn's shadow and turned to image the planet, seven of its moons, its inner rings -- and, in the background, our home planet, Earth (pale blue dot at lower left). One year ago, Cassini ended its epic exploration of Saturn with a planned dive into the planet’s atmosphere—sending back new science to the last second. The spacecraft is gone, but the science continues. The data returned by Cassini during its 13 years at Saturn will continue to be studied for decades, and many new discoveries are undoubtedly waiting to be revealed. Saturn’s moon Dione drifts before the planet’s rings, seen here almost edge on. For all their immense width, the rings are relatively paper-thin, about 30 feet (10 meters) in most places. For its part, Dione is about 698 miles (1,123 kilometers) across. This natural-color view was obtained on Aug. 17, 2015 with Cassini’s wide-angle camera at a distance of approximately 66,200 miles (106,500 kilometers) from Dione. ALMS: ELDRITCH Deacon has Alzheimer’s. it’s not the forgetting of an entire whole life of well-lived memories which he fears, it’s the forgetting that he forgot. all he remembers is that he’s had this disease bit on his shoulder like a carrier-gnat ever since he can remember. what he knows is that he’s strong. and soon, one day, he wakes up and he tells his bed that he never had the disease, never a disease, and never wants to hear mention of it again. he refuses to take medicine cos he ain’t sick. his live-in nurse Auguste tricks him by slipping in the Donepezil here and there wherever she can, in his coffee juice, orange tea, and when he’s sleeping snoring and dreaming of bran muffins. she even passes it from her tongue to his mouth insides by kissing him on occasion, which he despises. she is a lovely woman despite the unenviable miserable position of having to be this man’s caretaker—or perhaps because of it. Auguste has an unusual hairstyle where the right side of her tan hair is fallow but the left side is wrapped in a huge swirl which covers her left ear. that braid is so tightly-wound it gives her the fanny flutters and causes her eyelashed right eye to twitch. the degree to which this swirl is colored in gradations of grey is in direct proportion to how chapped her lips are. it is on this occasion of the morning that the two are having breakfast together, which entails her serving his every need and soggy wheatcake. the kitchen table is but a circular pile of trays, and he sits like a pile of whizzing heavy bullets on his favorite red ratty couch-chair wagging his fist at the screen. today she wants to try stealthing a new diet on him. she serves him a cereal bowl of popcorn. she figures he will be so distracted by the prospect of popcorn for breakfast he won’t notice he’s eating the medicine she put in there, popping it like a pill. why all the sudden interest in popcorn all of a sudden? why it was on the television set, and thus became the only thing which mattered...

The thin silver of Saturn’s moon Prometheus lurks near ghostly structures in Saturn’s narrow F ring in this view from our Cassini spacecraft. Many of the narrow ring’s faint and wispy features result from its gravitational interactions with Prometheus. Most of the small moon’s surface is in darkness due to the viewing geometry here. Cassini was positioned behind Saturn and Prometheus with respect to the Sun, looking toward the moon’s dark side and just a bit of the moon’s sunlit northern hemisphere. • • • Remembering the Cassini Mission The mission is a superb collaboration of NASA, ESA, and ASI, the Italian Space Agency. Heading straight to Saturn, the mission was carried out by Cassini probe (operated by NASA-JPL) and Huygens lander (operated by ESA & ASI). It was originally assigned to be on mission for June 2004 - May 2008, but then extended to a total duration of 19 years 335 days. Starting from its launch on October 15, 1997 to September 15, 2017. Several notable results include landing on Titan, discovering at least seven new moons of Saturn, close flybys to some moons (Titan, Iapetus, and Enceladus), and taking photograph of the moons from up close. It ended with a majestic dive (atmospheric entry) to Saturn, to prevent polluting the moons. Saturn was predicted to have no solid surface. Also recorded was the majestic "Hexagon" formation on Saturn's North Pole. Each side of it is even longer than Earth's diameter. As strange as it is, there is no hexagon at its South Pole at any observed altitude. Although both poles display auroras, just like Earth's poles do. On July 29, 2011, Cassini captured five of Saturn's moons in a single frame with its narrow-angle camera. This is a full-color look at a view that was originally published in September 2011. Moons visible in this view: Janus (111 miles, or 179 kilometers across) is on the far left; Pandora (50 miles, or 81 kilometers across) orbits just beyond the thin F ring near the center of the image; brightly reflective Enceladus (313 miles, or 504 kilometers across) appears above center; Saturn's second largest moon, Rhea (949 miles, or 1,528 kilometers across), is bisected by the right edge of the image; and the smaller moon Mimas (246 miles, or 396 kilometers across) is seen just to the left of Rhea. #repost from @nasa Lightshow alert! 👀 Astronomers using our @NASAHubble Space Telescope spotted auroras, or dancing lights, on Saturn’s north pole region. In contrast to the auroras on Earth, Saturn’s auroras are most easily imaged and studied in ultraviolet using space telescopes. Hubble allowed researchers to monitor the behavior of the auroras at Saturn's north pole over an extended period of time back in 2017 in order to create this composite image. The Hubble observations were coordinated with the "Grand Finale" of the Cassini spacecraft, when the spacecraft simultaneously probed the auroral regions of Saturn. Data allowed astronomers to learn more about Saturn’s magnetosphere, which is the largest of any planet in the Solar System other than Jupiter.

I hope that everyone had a relaxing weekend as the school year gets underway and welcome back to another #spacesundays. l This week we have a photo of the Pleiades. The Pleiades are a star cluster within the constellation of Taurus. It is one of the star clusters nearest to Earth and the most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky. The cluster includes bright hot blue stars formed within the last 100 million years. The name "Pleiades" comes from Ancient Greek and likely refers to "plein", or "to sail", due to its importance in sailing within the Mediterranean. In terms of mythology, the name was refers to the Pleiades, or "the seven divine sisters". The star cluster is very prominent in the winter in the Northern Hemisphere through to the mid-Southern latitudes. The earliest known depictions are likely from a German bronze age artifact called the Nebra sky disk (1600 BC). l We would also like to remind you about our Specialization Q&A on September 24th. This information session will be led by upper-year students who can provide great insight on courses, time management, extra-curricular activities, and more aspects of the life of an Astronomy student. This is the perfect opportunity to ask questions, get on track with courses, and become motivated about a future in Astronomy! 🍕 There will be FREE pizza and refreshments, as well as the opportunity to mingle with both the peers in your program and the upper-year students who are here to guide you on your journey in Astronomy at UBC! 🍕 l Later in the week, we are also hosting a games night! We will have FREE pizza and drinks for members, and only $4 for Non-Members! Come join us for a night of fun with some of UBC's mightiest Astronomers! l For more information about either event, check out Facebook page for the event pages. l Photo Credits: @petezelinka www.peterzelinka.com l #astronomy#constellation#cassini#cosmos#ESA#ExoMars#galaxy#interstellar#milkyway#moon#NASA#nebula#nebulae#planet#photography#physics#porteaucove#saturn#space#spacetravel#stargazing#stars#summer#UBC#universe#ubcastronomyclub#Vancouver#Vancity

one year ago, yesterday #cassini spacecraft ended the adventure. it brought us breathtaking pictures, thanks to that we studied Saturn the "ring planet" of the solar system. We are going forward until the origins of the space. We'll discover new horizons, also, we'll be on new planets. Thanks Cassini Spacecraft #cassini#space#spacecraft
