As part of Science Week, in Years 3 & 4 the children designed a modern Womble (remember those anyone?) A creature who would be helpful at knowing what to do with discarded plastic. Everyone found out about the triangular, numbered symbols and discovered that many items can be made from recycled plastics including traffic cones, trainers and food containers. #britishscienceweek#britishscienceweek2019

Last week we participated in British Science Week. The theme of the week was journeys, encouraging young people to think about the different scientific journeys that happen every day and how they can discover science through their own lives and experiences. Here at Fosse Way we explored the journey of plastic. Our youngest children created patterns with plastic bottle tops thinking about the words reduce, recycle, reuse. They drew sea creatures that are being affected by plastic getting into the oceans. Finally, they put the work together as a piece of artwork! #britishscienceweek#britishscienceweek2019

Homeschooling mamas! Check out this great resource for supplemental materials. • Posted @withrepost@homeedprintables We love the Usbourne books and “What are Stars” with its flaps is a current favourite with my little one, so we pulled out our Planet 3 Part Cards again (hand painted by myself) and studied the Solar System as British Science Week comes to an end. We placed the cards in order from distance to the sun and also in size order (Info provided). Then we came up with an extra mnemonic to remember the order (I have updated the pack so that one is now provided for you). [I just love how my 3 year old points out Orion’s Belt if she spots it in the sky too 🤣] ☀️ 🌎 ⭐️ #homeedprintables#britishscienceweek#planets#britishscienceweek2019#3partcards#montessoriathome#spacecards#earth#saturn#space#montessoriscience#science#solarsystem#handpaintedplanets#homeschoolscience#homeeducate#handsonlearning#astronomy#homeschoolresources#charlottemason#sciencestudy#studyspace#usbournebooks#whatarestars#planetcards#mnemonics#scienceisfun#homeeducationuk#mercury#sun

For British Science Week, we are sharing some of the amazing research that LMS researchers have already published this year. . Today we want to showcase this study from the Cellular Stress group in collaboration with AstraZeneca which found that genetic activation of a specific form of AMPK resulted in the protection against diet-induced obesity due to an increase in whole body energy expenditure. . With 1 in 4 adults estimated to be affected by obesity in the UK alone, AMPK could be a molecular target for the treatment of such metabolic diseases. . To find out more, please wash your questions below or head to #linkinbio and read the ‘Turning fat to muscle through a genetic AMPK switch’ article under News . . #mrclms#obesity#bsw#bsw19#britishscienceweek#britishscienceweek2019#fat#muscle#cellbio#partnership#metabolism#diet

So today I don't have any decent fun photos to share to mark British Science week l...So here's some of yours truly demoing some stuff for students. Hurrah! I am in charge of the integrated research and teaching laboratory in @kingstonuniversity which is a set of multidisciplinary laboratories comprising of a few postdocs, about 40 PhD and MRes students and throughout the year we house a lot of research project undergrad students, interns and visiting researchers (I have my hands full lol). Our labs are a first of their kind in kingston university and since opening it a doors in 2014 we have seen over 200 project students complete summer research dissertations with us and have had almost 100 research students, who are grant, internally and self funded, from all corners of the globe, come through our labs. Our research focuses on a broad range of topics including cancer and cardiovascular research (we have successfully secured CRUK and BHF funded research in our labs), drug development and discovery, diabetes research, forensics research, paediatric HIV, neuroscience, microbiology and natural products research. We have a number of EU and US patents resulting from our work, including 2 based on my own postdoctoral research. In the almost 8 years I have been working in KU we have gone from being research light to comparatively very weighty and thanks to our new labs and lovely staff, people are really itching to come here! It’s British Science Week so we thought we would share some of the amazing research that LMS researchers have already published this year. . Today we want to talk about this incredible research from the Single Molecule Imaging group & how it links with CRISPR . This group are interested in the mechanism of Cas9 and how this protein reaches any off target effects to improve on the specificity of the CRSIPR-Cas9 technology. . In this study, our resesrchers showed that by mechanically distorting the DNA, Cas9 was bound to increasingly more off target regions. . While this kind of stretching of the DNA is artificial, structural distortions of the DNA happen all the time during normal cell processes. They also found that Cas9 bound to off target sites were still cleaving the DNA which could have serious implications for gene editing technology. . The image shows a series of time lapse images of a single molecule of DNA held in place by optically trapped beads. As you distort the DNA more (from left to right), you can see more and more fluorescently tagged Cas9 binding unspecifically to the DNA . If you have any questions about this research, let us know in the comments. Or head to the #linkinbio & read the article ‘The promiscuity of Cas9’ under News . This work was performed in #collaboration with #AstraZeneca . . #mrclms#crispr#crisprcas9#singlemolecule#dna#geneediting#opticaltweezers#crisprbabies#britishscienceweek#britishscienceweek2019#bsw#bsw19#molecularbiology

So, as part of British Science week I am dedicating a post a day to science. So if any of you saw my story last week you would have seen one of these little guys straight after fertilisation, this is on day 10 and as you can see the chick embryo has grown and developed quite a vascular structure! So before I go on I'd like to chat briefly about the ethical all of this is. Unfortunately any kind of drug development will involve some level of pre clinical testing, be it in vivo (in an animal -which I would and could never do), or in vitro (in cell lines), however very sadly whatever drugs are developed yo treat a condition, they will more than likely pass through an animal model in order for them to pass into clinical trials. This means of testing, however, is more of a happy medium, allowing us to test drugs in development on a living, vasculated system without actually causing any pain as the chick embryo is yet to develop a nervous system at this stage and all testing is carried out strictly before any nervous system has developed. If this time period has been exceeded we will basically grab our scientists by the short and curlies and they can forget ever coming near us again. We take care that every single guideline is adhered to or there will be hell to pay. This bears pretty much the same ethical load as eating a farmyard egg where your girl and boy chickens mix. Anyway back to business. In our labs the chick embryo model has been used for looking at ocular drug delivery for the treatment of new born gonorrhoea, in looking at heart research and what drugs can be used to help treat a patient after a heart attack or heart disease, and in this case we are looking at anti angiogenic drugs (i.e drugs that stop blood vessel formation- check out @snippetsofscience post from a few days ago where she describes this procedure). As scientists, a lot of us try to either promote angiogenesis or prevent angiogenesis, so when tissues have been replaced or operated on, we want blood vessels to form, if we introduce a tissue engineered construct, we want to promote angiogenesis. In cancers or in certain other diseases, we want to prevent angiogenesis.. .continued below

We are celebrating #BritishScienceWeek by sharing some of the amazing research published by researchers at the LMS already in 2019. . That includes this study from Declan O’Regan’s group who have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm that can predict survival from the movement of your heart more accurately than clinicians. . The AI in this study uses computer vision to analyse the motion of the heart in a sequence of MRI scans. The algorithm developed is trained on a series of patient MRI scans and tracks the motion of the heart at hundreds of points every second - creating an incredibly detailed map of how the heart moves as shown in the model above. . The model above shows a series of loops protruding from a rotating heart model. Each loop shows the path that that particular part of the heart moves through when the heart contracts and relaxes. The colour of the loop indicates how quickly that movement occurs, with red loops contracting more quickly than blue loops. . From these 3D pictures of the moving heart, the machine then learns to predict the risk of dying from heart failure by finding simple patterns hidden in the data. . If you want to find out more, head to the #linkinbio and read ‘AI analysis learns to predict survival from the movement of your heart’ article under News.
