I love all the species in the genus Lomatium, but this one is a real champion of a plant, it’s Lomatium hooveri! A serpentine loving little plant with blood red flowers and white bracts to make it extra showy to pollinators. It also was an indicator species for us because essentially everywhere we found it, Fritillaria pluriflora was nearby! It is a listed rare species in California (CNPS 4.3) due to its tiny natural range, restricted to a few counties in Northern California oak woodland foothills. Although it’s range is small, it’s was very abundant in good habitat with hundreds of plants in rocky areas. #lomatiumhooveri#lomatium#apiaceae#floraofcalifornia#nativespecies#wildflowers#wildflower#botanizing#botany#serpentineplants#ultramafic#rareplants#cnps#calflora#californianativeplants

Hydrodictyon sp. 200x magnification. Darkfield.

Hydrodictyon (aka water net) i
Hydrodictyon sp. 200x magnification. Darkfield. . Hydrodictyon (aka water net) is a genus of green algae found in freshwater. It forms hollow tubes made up of individual cells that link together in hexagonal or pentagonal patterns. Individual colonies can get up to 50 centimeters in length. Although they are beautiful to find, when colonies reach high concentrations in a given body of water, they can become a huge problem, clogging up waterways and leading to unfavorable conditions for plants and fauna. Eutrophication is when a body of water is flooded with nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, sometimes caused by runoff from fertilizers and sewage. These nutrients create favorable conditions for producers like plants and phytoplankton (and hydrodictyon) and we can see large algal blooms. The problem here is that when a particular alga becomes too numerous, it will use up all the nutrients and grow on the surface and block sunlight from other photosynthesizers, causing them to die. As they are are dying and decomposing, oxygen production decreases. When one type of organism like hydrodictyon becomes so dominant, the ecosystem can’t accommodate that condition forever and eventually the algal bloom will die as well and leave the water with even less dissolved oxygen, causing consumers like fish to suffocate which can be disastrous for fisheries. Because of the high use of plant fertilizers in the agriculture industry, humans have become a huge contributor of phosphorus to excessive nutrient runoff. Further, climate change also plays a role here because extreme weather patterns can speed up rates and expand locations of runoff and also, as some inland bodies of freshwater dry up and rivers have shallower flows because of higher temperatures, it becomes easier and quicker for mat-forming algae like hydrodictyon to block waterways and hasten all these processes. . #microscopy#science#nature#freshwater#scicomm#pondlife#botany#algae#microscope#green#trippyart#plant#naturaleza#fish#biology#climatechange#farmlife#farming#environment#outdoors#wildlife#art#earth#photo#sciart#underwater#fineartist#naturephotography#abstractart#contemporaryart

Today’s amazing find! My first encounter with Aristolochia grandiflora also known as the Pelican Flower is up there with the world’s largest flowers. Indeed I smelt it’s rotting flesh odor which attracts flies and wasp. unsuspecting insect travels down the tubular part of the flower to where the reproductive organs are found. The tube is lined with downward facing hairs that prevent the fly from moving out. The reproduction process like other insect eating plants is highly evolved. There are 3 phases! The insect carries pollen from other flowers which are deposited onto the stigma as it makes it way to the bowl-like structure at the base of the trap. During the second phase the fly is trapped inside the flower, but it survives by eating nectar produced along the walls of the bowl. While the fly fumbles around looking for a way to escape the stamen releases its own pollen which then becomes attached to the fly. Luckily for the fly this phase lasts one day as the downward-facing hairs wither, allowing the fly to escape. Two days later the flower will die back and fall from its stem. #Aristolochia#pelicanflower#flytrap#flowers This plant is native to the Caribbean and Central America’s. #plantnerd#ethnobotany#botany

[An active substance that has been known for 30 years could unexpectedly turn into a ray of hope against eye tumors. The plant leaves which contain the substance is anything but rare: At Christmas time you can find it in every well-stocked garden center. ## The coralberry decorates many German living rooms during the winter months. At this time it forms bright red fruits, which make it a popular ornamental plant. ## The plant, originally from Korea, is surprisingly resistant to insect attack: Its leaves contain bacteria that produce a natural insecticide—a toxin with the cryptic name FR900359, abbreviated FR. ## This toxin could soon become a star in a completely different field: as a potential drug against uveal melanoma, the most common and aggressive variant of eye cancer. ## "The substance inhibits an important group of molecules in the cells, the Gq proteins." In uveal melanoma, however, a tiny mutation prevents two important Gq proteins from returning to their inactive state. They thus remain permanently active. ## Due to this malfunction, cells harboring this mutation begin to divide uncontrollably. "FR can stop this division activity." FR has already proven its effectiveness in cell cultures and in experiments with mice suffering from cancer.] ¤ #awareness#cancerprevention#preventcancer#fuckcancer#cancerawareness#medicinalplants#plantmedicine#primrose#plantsmakepeoplehappy#plants#mothernature#environment#nature#fuckbigpharma#indigenous#indigenousknowledge#godisgood#chinesemedicine#inflammation#research#botany#awesomeearth#abundance#naturelovers#berries#miracle#eyehealth

Stinking Hellebore (Helleborus foetidus) is an extravagant looking hellebore that will knock you into delirious vomiting episodes. Don’t eat it; no matter how much the witches encourage you to! Helleborus was used by witches to induce visions (it’s actually used as a potion in movie The Little Hours). The common name, Stinking Hellebore comes from the stench the plant gives off when it’s petals and leaves are bruised. The stench I assume is linked to the toxic compounds in its foliage and acts as a deterrent. Lastly, (as if this plant isn’t interesting enough!) it is the first case of heat symbiosis between plant and yeast! Yeast forms colonies around the nectarines (where nectar is held) and in return for providing food for the yeast, the yeast gives off heat! Which then attracts more pollinators. . . . #Hellebore#Helleborus#stinkinghellebore#LittleHours#delirium#toxicplants#springblooms#botany#botanicalfacts
