When the Japanese mend broken ‘objects’, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful. — Barbara Bloom ...between both artistic expressions, hope lies within 🙏🏻♥️ #Repost from @britishmuseum (@repost_media_app) A stunning sculpture by South Korean artist #Yeesookyung. Heartbreakingly beautiful things 1: Kintsukuroi Posted @withrepost@britishmuseum Can you name #5WomenArtists? As part of Women’s History Month, we're joining @womeninthearts to champion women artists around the world. The first image depicts a stunning sculpture by South Korean artist Yeesookyung. She is known for creating works which celebrate vulnerability and imperfection, combining discarded shards of porcelain that are then fused together with 24 karat gold leaf. The second image shows ‘Poe Clan’, a manga series created by Hagio Moto in the 1970s, featured on a 2018 cover of ‘flowers’ magazine. Hagio Moto is a pioneer of ‘shōjo’ manga, which is aimed at young women – you can see more of her work in our upcoming #MangaExhibition! Third is a piece by American artist Kara Walker, whose work engages with issues of race and gender, the American Civil War and the legacy of slavery. This print confronts the experience of African slaves in the southern states – the title ‘no world’ is a pun on the phrase ‘New World’. . Fourth is a postcard by British artist Rachel Whiteread. Best known for her sculptures made from industrial materials, she was the first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993. The holes in this postcard transform it into a 2D sculpture – see this work on display in our free exhibition of artists’ postcards. The final image is an ink drawing by Julie Mehretu, who has described her pieces as 'narrative maps without a specific place or location', and ‘like a strange dream’. Born in Ethiopia, she now lives in New York, creating large-scale abstract works. Translated Vase by Korean artist Yeesookyung (2002-ongoing) ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ The Translated Vase series consists of sculptures reconstructed from discarded ceramic fragments. Skillful ceramic masters reproduce traditional Korean ceramics, and the vases with minor defects are destroyed to keep the rarity and value of the surviving masterpieces ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ “I piece these destroyed pots back together in the manner of three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles, covering the cracks in gold. From the moment of destruction, I obtain a chance to intervene and fabricate new narratives with my own translation” ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ #yeesookyung#ceramics#porcelain#ceramicart

Cherry Dictionary: #kintsugi Five centuries ago in Japan, a lavish technique emerged for repairing broken ceramics. Artisans began using lacquer and gold pigment to put shattered vessels back together. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. This tradition, known as kintsugi, meaning “golden repair”, is now everyone’s (from chefs to contemporary artists) favorite expression from. Notable among them are the Korean sculptor Yeesookyung who creates impressive undulating sculptures from pieces of found dishes. British artist Paul Scott also uses the technique to combine distinct pieces of found ceramics.

。 #yeesookyung#leeummuseum

2/4. USA, North America One of the things that always impressed me about the North American country is the level of attention to details when it comes to museums. Although Indo-European or African history and arts have a much higher degree of complexity and can boast much more items for display, we must also learn how to showcase them better. And American museums can be a very good source of inspiration for that. . . . Pictured here are thrown away, leftover, ceramics pieces glued together with gold and transformed into a work of art by Korean artist Yee Sookyung, on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. . . . . #1year4continents#unitedstates#usa#northamerica#boston#massachusetts#mfa#mfaboston#museumoffinearts#museumoffineartsboston#museum#artsmuseum#ceramics#yeesookyung#koreanceramics#kintsugi#kintsukuroi

Kintsugi is from the Japanese Kin (gold) and tsugi (joinery) literally means to join with gold. “In an age that worships youth, perfection and the new, the art of kintsugi retains a particular wisdom – as applicable to our own lives as it is to a broken tea cup. The care and love expended on the shattered pots should lend us the confidence to respect what is damaged and scarred, vulnerable and imperfect – starting with ourselves and those around us.” #thebookoflife Works by #yeesookyung@galleryhyundai shout out to @candicekumai for introducing me to the concept

For #mentalhealthday I have written ‘Geum’ (a new poem that dives into a word that means two things) along with a little context of beauty standards and mental health coinciding for @dazedbeauty -Inspired by the series of work ‘Translated Vases’ by #yeesookyung I created a poem that explores the Korean word that means both ‘crack’ and ‘gold’ to explore how beautiful and broken don’t need to be separated. That you can be find beauty in yourself whilst suffering. Head over to the site to read the full article and the new poem. #Dazedbeauty#DBcommunity Alongside this article and the previous I want to take the time to thank all supporters of my work, whether that is readers or platforms for allowing me to be vulnerable, open and use my creative outlet as both therapy and help for others. It’s been a difficult couple of years but in opening dialogue around the issues we have been taught to hide and be silent on - lives are changed and saved. For you all are my inspiration to continue to write about the matters that really matter. Also I survived another year - that is fucking revolutionary
