“I’m Marina Klein, an Infectious Diseases Specialist and Clinical Epidemiologist
“I’m Marina Klein, an Infectious Diseases Specialist and Clinical Epidemiologist working at McGill University in Montreal. I am also a mother of two teenage boys. In the early days of the HIV epidemic things looked grim. Every private room on our medical ward was filled with beautiful and talented young men, often alone, dying from HIV. Staff and families were afraid to touch them. It angered and saddened me that such fear got in the way of the basic duty to care. For until we had effective antiretroviral treatment, care was the most important thing we could offer. These days I focus my research on HIV and hepatitis C. I am especially interested in approaches that ensure all people benefit from the revolutionary advances in treatment. To this end, I do research with indigenous communities and people who inject drugs. They disproportionately bear the burden of HIV and hepatitis C infections. I think I got a lot of my values from my mother. From a young age, her steely determination and unwavering advocacy for civil rights instilled in me the sense that all humans should be treated with dignity. That those of us who are privileged have a duty to work towards change. My patients are also a source of daily inspiration for me. It’s a privilege to know their stories, see their struggles and successes - they motivate me to find better ways to provide healthcare and improve their lives.” – Marina Klein, Infectious Diseases Specialist, Clinical Epidemiologist and IAS Governing Council member, Canada. *** Marina’s story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in HIV research and science. “I am trained as a clinical pharmacist but I changed my career to become an HIV translational scientist about seven years ago. My career path was not one that had been carefully planned from the start, but rather it evolved as opportunities were presented. I realized that we will never make the strides we need in the field without addressing the social aspects of HIV. For example, I recently met a young and recently married woman in a hospital. We had to inform of her that she was HIV-positive and she just could not understand how she contracted the virus despite being in a monogamous relationship. The social norms and complications of a sexually transmitted disease is why everyone in the field needs to work together to address these kinds of gaps.” – Reena Rajasuriar, IAS Member and 2018 Research for Cure Academy fellow, Malaysia *** Reena's story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in research and science. Happy #internationalwomensday. Let’s celebrate not because today is a special day, not because you’re a woman, but because in many countries women and men are recognised as humans with equal rights. . . We shall honor the achievements of women (and men) that fought for those rights. And continue fighting when and where those rights are not recognised, as well as for the rights we haven’t achieved yet. . . . . #womeninscience#womeninstem#womenincancerresearch#proudcancerresearcher#stemgirls#scicomm#scientistsofinstagram#actuallivingscientist#removingsciencestereotypes#stemforgirls#STEM#genderbalance#supportwomeninscience#genderbias#womeninscience4SDGs

“I am an Argentinean infectious diseases physician. After I finished my residency I got my PhD and since then I have been working mainly in the field of HIV and viral hepatitis. I work in both taking care of people living with HIV and AIDS, and in clinical and basic research. I also have 3 children! To be a researcher is hard, often your hypotheses are rejected. But every time this happens you find another idea and it feels like a new beginning. My happiest moments as a researcher are when I invite one of my patients to be part of a new project and they are glad to be involved in this search to end the HIV epidemic. I have a young patient who has been living with HIV since she was born. She has been very angry with everything. She didn't want to take her medication as a way to tell her parents that she was upset with them. She was admitted to the hospital many times and the last time with progressive multifocal encephalopathy. We all thought that she wouldn’t make it. But she did. She found the strength. After many months of treatments and rehabilitation she is studying to become a teacher. I have always been there for her and believed in her. To see her now, is one of the best feelings and inspiring moments of my career.” - Natalia Laufer, 2018 Research-For-Cure Academy fellow and IAS Member, Argentina *** Natalia’s story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in research and science. [Part 2/2] “I met a young woman in the institute where I was doing research in Uganda. She was dressed up in a way that she was constantly covered. I assumed this was a religious practice. I eventually learned all that covering up was to hide skin lesions caused by her HIV treatment. No matter what the temperature was outside, she was always covered, because she lived in real fear that if her landlord and others would see her skin they would recognize that she was living with HIV and she’d lose her housing. In that moment I realized the concrete impact stigma could have on someone. I invited her to accompany me that weekend on a planned trip to the national park. She came and shared more of her story. Born with HIV, her mother had died before her tenth birthday and her father did not want her. Through heart wrenching sobs she narrated her experiences navigating life with HIV – constant instability, vulnerability to sexual assaults, struggles with physical health, mental health and depression. Hearing her story was particularly painful knowing it was all too common. It is this young women’s story, and millions like her navigating life with a highly stigmatized condition, that drives me to understand how their lived experiences can be improved.” – Amara Ezeamama, IAS Member, Nigeria *** Amara’s story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in research and science. [Part 1/2] “My name is Amara Ezeamama. I am the seventh of eight children and I was born and raised in Nigeria until the age of eighteen. In my present role, my biggest passion is trying to understand modifiable determinants of functional survival in populations that are living with HIV. This is a daunting task and self-doubt affects us all. It helps to have been raised by a mother whose life and actions were guided by a courageous belief in what is possible. Despite having no formal education, she had wonderful strength, and was undeterred by failures and incredibly motivated by possibilities. She laid a solid sound foundation for finding the belief I needed in order to take risks and move in the direction of my hopes and dreams.” – Amara Ezeamama, IAS Member and 2016 CIPHER grantee, Nigeria *** Amara’s story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in research and science. [Part 3/3] “It’s incredible to see a person sitting in front of me in the clinic who is benefiting from the data we generated and/or the intervention we proved from our research. Knowing that the study data does not just sit inside the paper but comes out to really help improve someone’s life is a wonderful feeling. During my very first few months being away from Thailand to do a clinical fellowship in HIV dermatology at the San Francisco General Hospital, I received a huge, home-made beautiful bouquet of wild flowers from my patient. He was a middle-aged, HIV-positive gay man suffering from severe ano-genital warts whom I provided a series of liquid nitrogen treatments to. He didn’t say much, he just gave me a hug and was clearly proud to present the gorgeous flowers, hand-picked from his backyard. New to the western culture of patient-doctor relationships and not yet fluent in English, I did not expect to receive this very warm treatment from my American patient and it meant a lot to me. He boosted my moral confidence and reminded me how a simple act can impact – so be considerate.” – Nittaya Phanuphak, IAS Governing Council member *** Nittaya’s story is part of our ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal experiences from female IAS Members working in research and science. “February 11th has been declared International Day of Women and Girls in Science
“February 11th has been declared International Day of Women and Girls in Science by the United Nations General Assembly. At my university, I am inspired everyday by my female professors and peers. Women play a critical role in science and technology and today we remember the work that needs to be done to provide equal access to girls to pursue careers in Science. Today I celebrate women and girls all over the world who LOVE science and who continue to break down barriers. I’ll leave you a quote from just of many women who inspire me to continue my education in Kinesiology. "Certain people – men, of course – discouraged me, saying [science] was not a good career for women. That pushed me even more to persevere."Françoise Barré-Sinoussi–, virologist who won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine." Today is International International Day of Girls and #WomeninScience! Did you know that less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. And globally, only 3% of the students studying Information & Communications Technologies, natural science, and mathematics are women. In engineering and manufacturing it's 5% and in construction 8%. Biases and gender stereotypes steer girls and women away from science in school and career. Studies also show that women in STEM fields publish less, are paid less, and do not progress as far as men in their careers. Today, watch LIVE on webtv.un an international summit exploring these and other issues as women in science takes center stage. This year's theme: "Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth". Speakers include executives from Microsoft, IBM and more. Check out the COFIA Facebook page to meet Dr. Juliana Mandha, one of 14 young female scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa selected to be honored for their work and impact in science by L’Oréal-UNESCO in 2017.

According to @unesco data, currently, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only about 30% of all females students elect STEM-related fields in higher education. Why? I am so blown away by the awesome research these women are doing at LU! Jasmine Veitch tells me that half the life on Earth is PARASITES! Sometimes they can cause their host to burn fat but sometimes. . . not so good.  Christina Mozzon is studying evolution in urban raccoons with an eye to improving human/wildlife interactions but when she said blood glucose I had to ask . . . yup, raccoon diabetes is a thing! Raven Ouellette is researching urban stress in chipmunks. Are those cute, fat urban chipmunks producing more milk? [Part 2/2] “Recently, I had a patient, a seven-year-old HIV positive and malnourished girl, who started tuberculosis treatment. Her mother started to cry because the child needed to take nine pills per day. I believe that HIV is a paradigm of inequality in global health, depending on the country you live in, the quality of life and treatment delivery can differ a lot.” - Sheila Fernandez Luis, IAS Member, Spain #IASONEVOICE *** Today (11 February) is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We also like to build Lego models together and cook nice meals and tasty treats. I also like to challenge my fears. I have vertigo but I don’t want it to stop me having great experiences, one of my greatest achievements was abseiling down Glasgow Tower. Why Science? // "As a child I loved rock pools and really enjoyed investigating the different creatures I found in there, my favourite was the sea anemone. I also liked building dams on streams and watching frog spawn change into tadpoles and then teeny wee frogs. I think I was born with a natural curiosity for science." #WomenInSTEM#WomeninScience4SDGs#womeninscience#GlasgowScienceCentre

Just when we got it all together, we’re taking it apart! We’re learning how chemists separate mixtures with a process called chromatography. Our liquid mixture passes through a porous column like horses through the starting gate at a racetrack. A saavy chemist can tell each chemical component by the time it takes it to exit the column. Chromatography is used extensively to separate and analyze mixtures, from crime labs to ecological monitoring to quality control. #Chemistry#WomenInScience4SDGs#February11@science_comm

To celebrate, we are kicking off an ongoing #IASONEVOICE series featuring personal stories from female IAS Members working in research and science, starting with 2018 Research-For-Cure-Academy fellow Sheila Fernandez Luis from Spain. “I’m a pediatrician and predoctoral clinical researcher working for Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM). I’m currently based in Manhiça, southern Mozambique doing my PhD on clinical and epidemiological research in pediatric HIV infection, specifically on strategies to improve long-term clinical outcomes in children living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries. In my work, I have learned to not be afraid to take risks, to always stay humble but value yourself and do not let yourself be trampled. I am enthusiastic for the road ahead. I know it will be full of small but exciting steps that will bring new knowledge by learning from mistakes, sadness and personal growth while working with my patients, hope for good results, and the inevitable and necessary doubt that will make me rethink the way forward a thousand and one times.” @saricsfaction@isglobalorg#womeninscience#womeninscience4SDGs#genederequality#hiv#tb#sciencerules#strongwomen#education#wonderwomen#spain#mozambique#womeninstem#changethestory

Today is the International Day for Women and Girls in Science. Why Science // "There was never really a lightbulb-style "AHA!" moment that got me into science; thanks to my mum's encouragement I've always liked trying to understand how things work for myself, and it was more of a gradual process to realise that asking "why?" to try to understand the world around me is essentially how science works. It helped that a fair few of the people I admired as a child (Helen Sharman for one) were scientists, so I had some good role models there." #WomenInSTEM#womeninscience#GlasgowScienceCentre#Planetarium#WomeninScience4SDGs

LHC World Wide Data Day is a 24-hour span, midnight-to-midnight UTC, in which students from around the world can analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider and share results via an ongoing, 24 hour videoconference with physicist moderators taking shifts in locations around the world. LHC-W2D2 is open to groups of 4 or more high school students who have the aptitude and interest to analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider. We encourage but do not require each group to work with a sponsoring teacher. Groups of university undergraduate (or equivalent) students may also participate.
