Photo by @amivitale // A lion cub relaxes at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia in northern Kenya. This cub's mother wears a GPS collar that allows rangers from the @lionlandscapes program to track the movements of lions living amongst people and livestock. Real-time movement data from these collars teaches us about how lions survive in human-dominated landscapes, and helps us to prevent human-lion conflict by keeping livestock away from known lion locations. And, if a collared lion approaches a livestock enclosure outfitted with an alarm, the alarm will blare, scaring the lion away. With less human-wildlife conflict, all species benefit. Large wide ranging carnivores like lions are normally one of the first mammal species to be lost in areas shared with people and livestock. Apex predators like lions play a vital role in maintaining a healthy balance in an ecosystem, impacting everything below them, from soil nutrients and disease, to plant, prey and scavenger populations. Collaring for Coexistence started in 2017. This partnership between Lion Landscapes and Living with Lions provides conservation livestock owners with real-time lion movement information from GPS collars via a mobile phone app developed by @savetheelephants, allowing them to keep livestock away from lions or be on guard when lions are near. This program also tests new technologies that facilitate coexistence between people and carnivores. For example, virtual fences that warn us when lions enter areas where there is high risk of conflict, alarms that detect the approach of collared lions and warn livestock guards, and devices that scare away large carnivores by randomly shouting or flashing lights. A different kind of traffic today while out on the channels of the Okavango Delta! We spent the day collecting camera traps on remote islands as part of the Okavango Delta Large Carnivore Survey for WildCRU’s Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme, and besides hippos and large crocodiles, elephants are frequently encountered in the channels at this time of the year. The water is a cool welcome on a day like today when temperatures are over 40 degrees Celsius. As we came around the corner we found the one bull in the middle of the channel, and when we heard noise to our right turned to see another large bull in the reeds just next to us. He gave us a trumpet and as we backed off to give him space, he promptly joined his friend in the water and they made their way to the nearest island. #okavangodelta#elephants#elephanttraffic#theressomethinginthewater#wildcru#tkpp#lookingforlions

Are Leopards #Endangered? For a long time #leopards were assumed to be too secretive and adaptable to warrant concern. However, This is the question that the US Fish and Wildlife Service is considering right now. Our Founder, Dr. Andrew Stein, member of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Cat Specialist Group and National Geographic Explorer, has compiled an expert statement with information from other leopard experts from Sub-Saharan Africa through the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia up to the Russian Far- East. The purpose of this listing is to determine whether trophy hunting imports (skins, claws, teeth, etc) should be further regulated or completely banned from entering the United States. Our analysis shows that leopards have lost significant portions of their range across most of Asia and the Middle East. In Africa, leopards are nearly gone from West Africa and disappearing from large portions of Central and East Africa. In Southern Africa (specifically SADC countries) who permit leopard hunting, most countries have limited information on leopard populations outside of protected areas (hunting blocks) or standardized documents for comparison across countries. Few analyses exist for assessing the ability of hunters to select trophy animals or the impacts on populations. Lastly, illegal killing is increasing- poaching of leopards for ceremonial skins in South Africa or Traditional Medicines in East Asia, not to mention habitat destruction and bushmeat harvesting. We are at a critical moment in #leopard conservation and management. We don’t want leopards to go the way of tigers and lions! Help our efforts to conserve these cats. @insidenatgeo@natgeo@natgeowild#clawsconservancy#leopardswithoutborders#wildlifeconservation@zcp_org@pantheracats@niassalionproject@thewcs@ccfcheetah#wildcru#usfws#izw#biodiversitysocietyofjava#conservationindia#gorongosalionproject

RCP is working with villages to provide incentive payments for evidence of lions and other wildlife (captured on trail cams) on village lands. This incentivises communities to actively protect lions and their prey turning local people into crucial allies for conservation.  Photo by Lorenzo Rossi #communityconservation#barabaig#tanzania#ruahacarnivoreproject#wildcru#lionconservation#pantheraleo#lionsofinstagram#bigcatsofinstagram#catsofinstagram#lioncubs#babyanimals

Jul.2018. Probably the craziest thing I saw this year: a mole. I didn't appreciate it as much at the time but everybody else harping on about how they'd never seen one really changed that. Here's how it unfolded: This year's summer was amazing and consistently warm. After spending the first few months here mostly inside, hiding away from the cold, I spent as much time as I could outside. Sometimes I'd even take my laptop to work in the shade. One of these days I looked across and noticed the ground under the grass moving next to my foot - like a cartoon! Took a peek and this guy/gal was under there. Took a photo and he/she was soon along their way. . . . . . . #mole#britishwildlife#mammals#wildcru#tubney#europe#britain#england#wildlifephotography#nature#naturephotography#mammalinthewild#europeanmammals#wildlife#aguyaneseabroad#summer#bst

A clan of spotted hyensa on a mid-night play date just outside of camp. One of them is definitely not camera shy, getting very close to the second camera trap. Do you think he was going in for a selfie? ---------- 📷: Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme part of WildCRU, based out of the University of Oxford. ---------- #wildwatch#proudlyandbeyond#wildcru#andbeyondimpact#leavealegacy#careoftheland#careofthewildlife#conservation#makeadifference#wildlife#discoverwildlife#travelandbeyond#xaranna

@andbeyondxaranna ・・・ Catwalk queen - this impossibly elegant cat is a Serval. It’s a rare sighting in the Delta, and they always keep us fascinated, with their extra-ordinarily long legs and big ears. This photo was captured on camera trap as a part of WildCRU's Okavango Delta Carnivore Survey on the Xaranna concession. #wildwatch#proudlyandbeyond#wildcru#andbeyondimpact#leavealegacy#careoftheland#careofthewildlife#conservation#makeadifference#wildlife#discoverwildlife#travelandbeyond#xaranna

@andbeyondnxabega ・・・ Aardvark at Nxabega, photographed as part of the camera trap survey on our concession. The motion controlled camera trap survey is currently the most reliable and accurate method for surveying large carnivores. The camera traps were set up in a grid system, approximately 4kms apart, with two camera traps placed opposite each other to capture the animal from both sides, allowing the the team to identify individuals. The survey is part of WildCRU's Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme, based out of the University of Oxford, in order to study and protect the carnivores of the Okavango Delta. #wildwatch#proudlyandbeyond#wildcru#andbeyondimpact#leavealegacy#careoftheland#careofthewildlife#conservation#makeadifference#wildlife#discoverwildlife#travelandbeyond#nxabega

@andbeyondxaranna ・・・ A lion couldn't possibly look more majestic than this, could he? This male lion was caught on camera on the Xaranna concession, as part of WildCRU's Okavango Delta Carnivore Survey using camera traps.
