Double tap if you like this picture! Want a Free shout out? Follow me! Photo by @timlaman - Who says penguins can't fly? An Adelie penguin leaps from the water to catch a breath and check the shoreline as it approaches Devil Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Sea the story behind how I captured this photo @timlaman This behavior, know as porpoising, is how penguins catch a breath without slowing down. Penguins actually fly under water, unlike other sea birds that paddle with their feet, penguins power themselves with their small but powerful wings, thus flying through water. @TimLaman Wildlife Photo Tips: Cape Petrels aka Pintados in flight. When leaving the last Antarctic Islands behind and sailing into the Drake Passage, ships are often followed by flocks of these beautiful seabirds. I love spending a lot of time out on the back deck, experimenting with photographing them in various ways. Two ideas for today’s tips: The first is using a slow shutter speed on flying birds (1/60th in all these shots) to blur the background and add interesting motion. You need to track the motion to get a least some areas of sharpness though. Second, think about experimenting with converting images to Black&White. Especially with high contrast subjects like these birds, it can give a more artistic interpretation to a rather flat-light day. Using a monopod like the Gitzo I’m using can improve your success rate on these panning/tracking shots by taking out a lot of the up-and-down shake. @GitzoInspires#FramedonGitzo#TL_WildlifePhotoTips#wildlifephotography#black&white#Antarctica#petrel@NatGeoExpeditions

#Repost@timlaman with @get_repost ・・・ “We got this”, one penguin appears to be saying to the other, “we’re penguins, we can handle this blizzard”. It’s easy to anthropomorphize a moment like this that I happened to capture while shooting in a snowstorm recently in Antarctica…. But I want to share some photo tips for shooting in blowing snow. You can really create the atmosphere you want in your image by your shutter speed: For example, a fast shutter (1/1000 sec), like in shot 2 of the Adelie’s, freezes the snowflakes in place, giving the nice “Christmas card” effect. While using a slower shutter (1/125 sec) like in shot 3 of the Gentoo Penguin, blurs the snow and conveys that “nasty storm” look. You definitely need a tripod for slow shutter shots. I shot this on my Gitzo Systematic Tripod with a Gitzo Gimbal head. Keep swiping to see some behind-the-scenes shots. @GitzoInspires#FramedonGitzo#TL_WildlifePhotoTips#BTS#wildlifephotography#Antarctica#penguin#penguins#animal#🐧#cold#photography#photo#bird#follow#like#adorable#love

Tim Laman @timlaman provides us with amazing photography and videography of nature including this wonderful video of Adelie Penguins. Read the description below the credits for more and swipe from right to left to view behind the scenes video. • This is a #repost from @timlaman via @PhotoAroundApp Video by @TimLaman. You have to admire these tough little Adelie Penguins, going in and out of this rocky beach while waves crash amongst huge chunks of ice. I shot this on a rather raw day at Paulet Island, Antarctica. Sometimes, you just want to capture the action on video like I did here, because it tells the story better than a still image can. For example here I have slowed the video to half speed. So I always try to have my Gitzo Systematic tripod and Gimbal Head with me, even when the primary mission might be shooting stills. Having a tripod just keeps your options open for getting creative! When the penguin is moving perpendicular to you, you can see through the water and track him, like in the video clip and shots from the side. But when they are coming strait towards you, it’s hard to guess where they will come up. But watch for patterns in their behavior, and don’t be afraid to shoot a lot of blanks. Deleting is easy! “We got this”, one penguin appears to be saying to the other, “we’re penguins, we can handle this blizzard”. @GitzoInspires#FramedonGitzo#TL_WildlifePhotoTips#BTS#wildlifephotography#Antarctica#penguin@NatGeoExpeditions

Estou sempre espantado com a precisão com que esses mestres de vôo podem controlar sua posição no ar: asas batendo furiosamente, mas mantendo o bico perfeitamente firme para se alimentar de flores delicadas. This behavior, known as porpoising, allows them to catch a breath without slowing down and to see the land ahead, and I love the challenge of trying to capture them in mid-air. To capture an image like this, I try to see the penguins beneath the water and track them and start shooting before they come up. Photo by @TimLaman. On my recent Antarctic voyage, one highlight was a visit to the Adelie Penguin colony on Paulet Island in the Weddell Sea during a snowstorm. Of course the penguins were unfazed by the weather, and were commuting between feeding in the ocean and their nesting sites way up on the rocky hillsides. So fun to watch and photograph these amazing birds up close. Note the pinkish undersides of this bird’s wing. That means this penguin is getting hot from all its hiking and is sending blood near the surface of its skin…. that’s how they cool down on a warmish Antarctic day that was barely below freezing. On expedition with @NatGeoExpeditions. In my opinion, bad weather can make for some of the most dramatic wildlife images, so keep shooting! Tune in to @TimLaman for a lot more photos from this shoot and my tips on wildlife photography. #TL_WildlifePhotoTips,#Antarctica,#penguin,#snowstorm.

After some unsuccessful attempts to get close flight shots in focus, I had been watching this male enough to know some of his favorite perches. So I made this shot by pre-focusing and waiting for him to come back to this spot. Success! #TL_WildlifePhotoTips. Photo by @TimLaman. Four males and a female Harlequin Duck fly along the Massachusetts coast over the Atlantic Ocean. To get flight shots like this of fairly distant birds, I used my 600mm and 2x converter (thus 1200mm) and tracked and focused on the birds as they passed with my camera/lens on a tripod with gimbal type head. See behind-the-scenes shots in my last post. The gimbal head, like the new Gitzo model I am using, allows you to balance the lens and move quickly. As for finding the birds in the frame of at 1200mm lens and getting them in focus as they fly quickly past? Practice, Practice, Practice. #TL_WildlifePhotoTips#FramedonGitzo@GitzoInspires#ducks#YearoftheBird#Yearofthebird2018#Massachusetts

Unlike the old days when you had to choose your film ahead of time, with digital you can easily convert your color images after the fact. Because B&W images rely on tonality and contrast for success, sometimes even when light is “too harsh” for color, images can look very dramatic in B&W. ☀ ————————————————————————- ☝🏼Here is an example of a classic Serengeti scene with elephants and acacia tree, shot in harsh mid-day light. But in B&W and with some exposure adjustment and vignetting, it looks pretty sweet. 🐘🐘 ————————————————————————- #elephant#blackandwhite#safari#Tanzania@ThomsonSafaris#TL_WildlifePhotoTips

The Serengeti is a great place to shoot the night sky, it is far from cities where there is no light pollution and the stars are amazingly bright on clear nights.🌟🌌————————————————————————- I know you have to travel light on safari, but it is really worth bringing a small tripod to be able to make shots like this. I shot this with a 16-35mm f2.8 lens at an exposure of ISO 3200, f2.8, for 30 sec. In dark conditions like this, these settings are more than enough to get a good star exposure. In order to prevent the tent lights from being too bright, I used a three stop split ND filter covering the bottom part of the frame. 🌟⛺————————————————————————- #milkyway#safari#Tanzania@ThomsonSafaris#TL_WildlifePhotoTips

Photo by @TimLaman. Zebra impressionism. Sometimes on a photo safari, I like to experiment with motion-blurred images. What do you think of this one? Have I gone too far in the artsy–impressionistic direction, or do you like it? By slowing down the shutter speed, the creative possibilities are nearly endless. I’ve posted a more typical example of a motion blur shot over at @thomsonsafaris, and explained my method there. So please check it out. #blur,#TL_WildlifePhotoTips,#zebra,#Tanzania.

--> 📸 Photo by @TimLaman on safari with @ThomsonSafaris in Tanzania last month. 📸 <-- ————————————————————————- Let's face it, when you are a photographer on safari, the light isn’t always gorgeous, and there is not always a lion hunt going on in front of you. What I like to do is think of other ways to be creative with my photography during those slower moments. One thing I enjoy experimenting with is motion blur, and here is an example. ☝🏼 ————————————————————————-The basic idea is to use a slow shutter speed and track a moving subject to keep at least part of it (ideally the eye) fairly sharp, while the whole background becomes a blur of motion. If you are using a telephoto in the 200-400 mm range, any shutter speed below 1/60 sec will give you pretty decent motion blur, but the slower you go, the harder it is to capture a sharp zone. I find around 1/20 or 1/30 to be the sweet spot. Of course the faster your subject is moving, the more background blur you will get, like in the case of this one zebra running past another zebra. ———————————————————————— #zebra#motionblur#safari#Tanzania@ThomsonSafaris#TL_WildlifePhotoTips

#Repost from @timlaman "Photo by @TimLaman. The perfection of a hummingbird’s feathers…. I wanted to see how close I could get to this wild female Costa’s Hummingbird. By gradually inching closer to her favorite perch, she tolerated me at 2 meters away with my 400mm lens + 2x converter for this 800 mm portrait, which I also cropped to 100% at 1024x1024 pixels. I love seeing the detail in every little feather, and the reflection of the sun in her eye! #TL_WildlifePhotoTips#FramedonGitzo#hummingbird#sunnylands#annenberg#birdsofsunnylands#birds#coachellavalley#palmsprings#ranchomirage#california"

Cendrawasih, Bird of Paradise, West Papua, Indonesia. Photo by @TimLaman. Lesser Bird-of-Paradise male creates an explosion of plumes by shaking them over his back. From my Birds-of-Paradise Collection, shot in Aug 2009, West Papua, #Indonesia. My long-term Birds-of-Paradise work continues with new expeditions every year pursuing these spectacular birds. Currently I’m back in the field on another filming trip… stay tuned. @BirdsofParadiseProject, #Papua,#BirdsofParadise,#Birds-of-Paradise,#IndonesiaBiodiversity,@NatGeoCreative, @ThePhotoSociety.#TL_WildlifePhotoTips: I used a moderate shutter speed of 1/90 sec for this shot, which was enough to keep the eye sharp (since the head wasn’t moving much) but blur the fast-moving feathers for a sense of motion. #Repost@timlaman with @insta.save.repost • • • #cendrawasih#birdofparadise#papua#westpapua#indonesia#bird#animal#wildlife#nature#forest#rainforest

Photo by @TimLaman // A male Anna’s Hummingbird pauses among some aloe flowers in his constant quest for nectar. This is one of the most common hummingbird species in California, and I love capturing images of them to see and enjoy the remarkable detail of these tiny fast birds. You can only see the rose-colored throat and head, for example, if you view from in front of the bird. Lets celebrate wild birds in 2018 – the #YearoftheBird! Follow me @TimLaman to see hummingbirds and more wild bird images throughout the year. #TL_WildlifePhotoTips: I made this shot at 1/1000 sec but notice how blurred the wings are, because they are moving so fast. The great thing about hummingbirds is that when they hover, even though their wings are moving very fast, they can hold their head amazingly still, giving you a chance to get your shot in focus. I like the wing blur to give a sense of motion, and prefer shooting in natural light like this as opposed to using flash. #hummingbird#sunnylands#annenberg#birdsofsunnylands#birds#coachellavalley#palmsprings#ranchomirage#desert#california
