There is a movie I really love called “Only Lovers Left Alive”, that movie is not for everyone, but they mention Nikola very briefly, but deeply. This post reminds me of that brief line; “only if Nikola sees what happened to humanity tangled with wires, he would just mourn for us.” (Just paraphrasing) . . History is full of unappreciated scientists like A. Turing, G. Bruno, R. Franklin, A. Wallace, J. Maxwell and so many others I cannot think of right now. It just breaks my heart that someone, who has monetary or political power, comes along and pushes great minds away just for his/her own profit or because of moral dilemmas or simply for personal gain. It is still going on, it is very very sad. . . . . #tesla#scientist#onlyloversleftalive#tildaswinton#tomhiddleston#maxwell#rosalindfranklin#dna#helix#chem#bio#math#alanturing#turing#computerscience#unappreciatedscientists#appreciation#appreciate#sciencerules#sciencewins#BrunoofItaly#astronomer#astronomy#astro#wallace#evolution#greatminds#universe#cosmology

One of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, Rosalind Franklin’s work as a chemist and X-ray crystallographer gave us one of, if not the, most important revelations in understanding DNA, its double helix structure. This discovery would go on to earn a Nobel Prize for her colleagues James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins- Franklin had passed away before the prize was awarded, and the Nobel committee does not give awards posthumously. I personally like to believe that if she had lived longer, she would also have received the Nobel, but either way no one can deny she was a brilliant scientist, and it’s our responsibility to make sure her work is not pushed aside or forgotten. “In my view, all that is necessary for faith is the belief that by doing our best we shall succeed in our aims: the improvement of mankind” - an inspiring quote from an inspiring woman, Rosalind Franklin, a chemist who discovered the structure of DNA. Her work gave us vital insight into understanding our own genome, and her legacy is certainly that of improving mankind. Lately I’ve been thinking of this quote, and of my belief in our ability to do good. Quotes like this remind me not to doubt it. 💕 . . . . #womenofscience#rosalindfranklin#inspiring#rememberwomen#strongwomen#womenofhistory#quotestagram#quoteoftheday#quotestoliveby#quotesandsayings#dailyquotes#typography#positivevibes#instaquote#wordsofwisdom#inspiringquotes#growthmindset#quotesdaily#quotesoftheday#selftalk#motivation#positivequotes#staypositive#personalgrowth#positiveaffirmations#thinkpositive#goodthoughts#positivemind#positivemindset#strengthinletters

@lajefacervezaartesana@contigotenerife#cerveza#beer#bier#birra#cerveja#pivo#biere#garimba#craftbeer#cervezaartesanal#Rosalind#Helicoidal#LaJefa#RosalindFranklin#GoldenAle#BlondeAle#Hoppy#Lupulo#Hops#Tenerife#Tenerifelicidad#Canarias#CanaryIslands#beerpics#beerlover#beergeek#beerreview#ratebeer#beerporn#beerstagram

Watched Photograph 51 @centralsqtheater today about the life of Dr. Rosalind Franklin, who photographed and concluded the double helical structure of DNA, but didn’t receive any recognition for it (3 male scientists received the Nobel Prize for discovering the same, Google it). Parts of it are frighteningly relevant even today - the unbalanced ratio of women in science, challenges in collaboration and the gross absence of risk-taking abilities in favour of perfection. However, I’m still happy to be part of a generation that is talking about it and trying to fix these challenges! 🧠 #bethechange#rosalindfranklin#photograph51#dna#doublehelical#nobelprize#womeninscience

A common theme in women’s history is women having their significant contribution
A common theme in women’s history is women having their significant contributions either ignored or stolen. The later was true for Rosalind Franklin. She was born in England in 1920 to a relatively wealthy family. She was highly educated, attending private girls’ school, studying in Paris, all before attending Cambridge where she would get her doctorate in Chemistry in 1945. . Franklin was extremely knowledgeable and skilled in the area of x-ray crystallography which allows scientists to see the structures of molecules and because of this knowledge she was offered a fellowship at King’s College in London. Unfortunately for Rosalind, the person she was supposed to working closely with was sick during her interview and boy if he has been there she would not have been hired because he was really sexist. This would make her job that much more difficult without the support of what was supposed to be her close co-worker. She would face blatant sexism throughout her career from both colleagues and from the policies that kept her out of many spaces. . Rosalind’s expertise in x-ray crystallography led to the discovery of the structure of DNA, something that she would be stolen from her. Watson, one of the men credited for discovering DNA thoughts on women in science were basically “they belong outside of it”. Rosalind shared her data with Watson and his counterpart Crick and they based their entire 3D model of DNA off of her theory and work and did not credit her whatsoever. They pretended the work was all theirs and violated the scientific code of ethics. What makes matters even worse is that Rosalind died of ovarian cancer in 1958, four years before Watson and Crick would be awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for “their” discovery. They cannot even retroactively award Franklin a Nobel Prize, as it is only given to living people. So it’s important that we share Rosalind’s story so that she can at least be credited culturally for her achievements if not formally. #feminism#rosalindfranklin#womenshistorymonth#steminist#womeninstem

➡️ Viva as mulheres na ciência ⬅️ . A aluna Emily Naiely interpretou a cientista Rosalind Franklin durante a ação do nosso projeto "A importância das mulheres na ciência". . . . . My #ipsyshero is #rosalindfranklin because she discovered the double helix structure of DNA although her coworkers #Jameswatson and #crick stole her work as their own. She lived for her work and she died from it, as a result of radiation she received from X-ray machines she used to obtain her infamous image, she died of cancer. I am going into Biology research and she is my SHEro. 🦸🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🔬🧬 #contest

Born in 1920 to Jewish parents in London, Rosalind Elsie Franklin always had direction. She attended an all girl school focused on preparing girls for a life with a career not just marriage. She then went to Cambridge. Franklin's scientific achievements, both in coal chemistry and virus structure research were considerable. Her peers in those fields acknowledged this during her life and after her death in 1958. But it is her role in the discovery of DNA structure that has garnered the most public attention. Crick, Watson, and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work on the structure of DNA after stealing information from Franklins notes/research. They never told her they had seen her work. None gave Franklin credit for her contributions at that time. Franklin's work on DNA may have remained a quiet footnote in that story had Watson not caricatured her in his 1968 memoir, The Double Helix. Interesting. Tragic. For #BritishScienceWeek we've been sharing the stories of inspiring British #WomeninSTEM. Today we wanted to share Rosalind Franklin's story 🧬🦠⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rosalind Franklin was an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer. She made significant contributions to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite. Her research on coal and viruses were appreciated in her lifetime, but her contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA was not fully recognised until after her death.⠀ 👩🏻‍🔬👩🏽‍💻 👩🏿‍🔧 👩🏽‍🚀⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ #womenintech#tech#girlsintech#STEM#womeninSTEM#girlsinSTEM#digital#womenindigital#girlsindigital#herstory#women#empower#empowerment#inspiration#girlpower#technology#code#programming#womenwhocode#girlswhocode#coding#science#equal#rosalindfranklin#InnovateHer

Let's dance! 💃🤖🕺 ⠀⠀⠀ Before Rosalind Franklin the ExoMars rover can search for signs of life on Mars, it must learn how to manoeuvre the landscape. Scientists and engineers are putting the rover through a series of locomotion tests to fine tune how it will respond to a challenging martian terrain. ⠀⠀⠀ The ExoMars mission will see Rosalind the rover and its surface platform land on Mars in 2021. There, the rover will move across many types of terrain, from fine-grained soil to large boulders and slopes to collect samples with a 2-m-long drill, and analyse them with instruments in its onboard laboratory. Engineers must ensure Rosalind does not get stuck in sand or topple over and that it is able to climb steep slopes and overcome rocks. ⠀⠀⠀ The ExoMars teams are using a dedicated rover to run locomotion tests. In this image, the full-sized locomotion model is about to move from the surface platform. This rover has been designed to behave exactly like Rosalind would do under martian gravity – that is about a third of gravity found on Earth. For that purpose, the model has a different weight distribution and features a boom mounted on top to achieve the exact location of the centre of gravity of the rover. ⠀⠀⠀ Go to our @instagram Story to learn more. ⠀⠀⠀ 📸 @europeanspaceagency ⠀⠀⠀

On February 28, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick walked into The Eagle, a Cambridge Pub frequented by fellow scientists, boasting that they discovered ”the secret of life”—AKA the double-helix structure of DNA. Fifty years later a plaque was installed outside the pub to mark the anniversary of this occasion with their names on it—that is, until two years ago, when someone took to carving the name of Rosalind Franklin into it. • In 1950, after spending three years studying x-ray crystallography in Paris, Rosalind Franklin returned to her home of London to work as a research associate at King's College, where she worked alongside Maurice Wilkins to study DNA. At some point early on, their professional relationship was strained, and they began leading separate research groups; it was her group that used x-ray diffraction to develop a photograph of DNA, and discovered its double-helix structure in the process! Her discovery, however, was snatched away from her behind her back by Wilkins, who had the nerve to show the now-famous “Photo 51” to his friends—and YEAH, those friends of his were Watson and Crick. 😑 Not only did they create a model for the structure of DNA using Franklin’s data before she got the chance to do so herself, but after she passed away from ovarian cancer, the three men went on to win the Nobel Prize in 1962. Franklin couldn’t win the award posthumously, and was thus cut out of the picture for decades to come. • Luckily, Rosalind Franklin has been rightfully recognized in recent decades for her contribution to figuring out the double-helix structure of DNA. In fact, just last month, the European Space Agency announced that their ExoMars Rover, scheduled to launch in 2020, would be named Rosalind Franklin in honor of her legacy. And as for that plaque at The Eagle pub? It’s still there—but another plaque describing Rosalind Franklin’s contribution now exists inside the premises in shiny gold for all pubgoers to see. #FemaleFriday (📸: @stuartcantrill) . . . . . . #rosalindfranklin#dna#womeninstem#womeninscience#stem#thefutureisfemale#seeitbeit#femaleempowerment#womenempowerment

New Images of Mars from the ExoMars Orbiter Features Photo of InSight Lander Seen from Space The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, circling the Red Planet since 2019, has returned a wealth of images of Mars, including a photograph of the InSight Lander on the Martian surface. This marks the first time a European spacecraft has ever photographed a spacecraft on the surface of Mars. The ESA-Roscosmos Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) launched from Earth on March 14, 2016, headed for Mars. The vehicle arrived at the Red Planet just over seven months later, on October 19. Once there, the spacecraft carried out aerobraking operations, refining its orbit in preparation for its main scientific mission which began in April 2018. Part of that mission is relaying data from InSight to mission controllers on Earth. Posted @withrepost@thescishow Rosalind Franklin is an example of an awesome woman who didn’t get the credit she deserved. Using X-ray degradation techniques on crystallized fibers of DNA, she was able to separate patterns that had baffled other researchers. In early 1952, one particular pattern that she would label as Photograph 51 clearly showed the first real evidence of a helix with multiple chains 🧬 Unfortunately, she died not long after of ovarian cancer, and Watson and Crick got most of the credit for discovering the structure of DNA, erasing Franklin from the story. You can learn more about Rosalind Franklin in our video about her! Go to bit.ly/GreatMindsRF #internationalwomensday2019#iwd2019#womeninscience#womeninstem#science#chemistry#rosalindfranklin

Rosalind Franklin At the age of 15 she had already known that she wanted to be a scientist. She discovered the structure of DNA and pioneered the use of X-rays to create images of crystalized solids in analyzing complex, unorganized matter, not just single crystals. The two scientists, Rosalind and Francis Crick did in fact use what they saw in Photo 51 as the basis for their famous model of DNA, which they published on March 7, 1953, and for which they received a Nobel Prize in 1962. Even while undergoing cancer treatment, Franklin continued to work, and her group continued to produce results. Exposure to X-ray radiation is sometimes considered to be a possible factor in her illness. „Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.“ — Rosalind Franklin . . . #woman#women#science#education#amazing#amazingpeople#wow#she#differenceintheworld#inspiring#equalrights#rosalindfranklin#physics#chemistry#Nobel#nobelprize#DNA#dna
