We are midway through Mental Health Awareness month, so I thought I’d share this gem from my #zenasfuck journal. Guys- it’s so important to understand that bad, sad, mad, hurtful, gross, mucky, shitty feelings are A-OK. We all have them. Don’t try to suppress them, instead find healthy ways to express them. Workout, create something beautiful, paint, scream at the top of your lungs, sing as loud as you can to your favorite songs. Do SOMEthing to let those feelings out. Recognize that they’re there, allow them their moment, and then move on. There is an ancient Native American legend, one of my favorites, about the two wolves who live inside our minds. These two wolves are constantly battling, one for good, light and positivity- the other for bad, darkness and negativity. Whichever wolf you feed, is the one that wins. Do not let the darkness win. Honor its presence, but focus on the light. By the middle of May, Sarah realized I was in need of more tha
Day 19-1: Partial By the middle of May, Sarah realized I was in need of more than weekly counseling. I wasn't bad enough to be hospitalized, so she recommended a program at CentraCare called Partial Hospitalization. It was a daily, 6-hour per day program that was for people who needed an extra push toward healing. It involved group therapy, one-on-one therapy, exercise and movement therapy, art therapy, med changes and education. I was referred at the end of May 2012 and started June 2012. While I was in this program, I would have to stop seeing Sarah, which scared me, but I was paired with a counselor named K and she was EXACTLY what I needed. The first day I was having anxiety bad, but calmed down during my initial intake with K. We talked about what was going on, what I wanted to get out of the program, what I was hoping for in the long run. I said ultimately, I wanted to be in control of my own mind and I didn't want to live in the dark anymore. I had my 2 nieces and they were too important to me and for them, for now, I had promised I'd fight. During the intro phase where everyone would introduce themselves and say why they were there, I realized I wasn't alone in my suffering for the first time in a long time. After the introductions, a meditation CD was turned on, the lights were turned off and we closed our eyes. I don't remember exactly what was said on the CD, but I think it started by saying, "go deep inside yourself" and I lost it. I mean LOST IT. I started crying and hyperventilating. I started shaking, I was nauseated, I got up and walked out. K followed me and lead me to her office where I continued to have my first full-blown panic attack. I couldn't stop crying or shaking. K just put her hand on my knee and said, "there, now let it out." So I did, for what seemed like 5 minutes or longer. K asked me what I thought led up to the panic attack and I remember telling her that I had never focused on myself like that before and I freaked out. The Mighty Site asked me to illustrate how anxiety feels to me. It feels like a tight chest, a racing heart, uncontrollable tears or turning ghostly pale. Things that have helped me manage my anxiety over time are building in exercise to my daily routine, I run and swim and make it a regular activity, which really does help. I also listen to an upbeat playlist when I run every morning (just a short run, walking would also work). I list the things I am grateful for every night before going to sleep. I have heard it's impossible to feel grateful and anxious at the same time. If I am anxious about a particular thing, writing it down helps me, like if I have to take a train somewhere new I write down every step and things that could go wrong and how I will prepare for them. How does anxiety feel to you and how do you manage it? ❤️ @sugarandsloth

Grateful my university offers free counseling Services to students. Thankful for my therapist 💕Through talk therapy, I have finally been able to process years of trauma and let go of the anger, hurt, heartbreak, shame, fear, and guilt that I have been carrying for years. I discovered what my anxiety looks Like, that it’s not my fault and from the trauma &how to cope in a healthy way. I’ve learned those negative thoughts that plagued me were actually just my anxiety lying to me!! Therapy is the best decision I’ve ever made.. I have found healing through therapy and I would recommend it to EVERYONE. Trust me y’all. #therapyworks I feel so free from the emotions that once held me down. Seek help! I’ve been inactive on Instagram for about a week, and I’ve missed the community, but I needed time, and space. I needed to stop worrying if I’d caught up with everyone, how many followers I had gained/lost in a week, if my posts were “good enough” or “original”. Your posts, your numbers, your engagement, never define your worth. I have made a few friends through this page and THAT is what keeps bringing me back. The idea that I can use this platform to make friends and maybe game with them, no matter their age, race, or geo location. Having positive mental health is a proactive choice. Every day, I chose to fill my mind with a way to grow and support my mental health and hope in Christ. Why this book? It's been almost two years you might think. Life after a suicide loss doesn't end. This is the life I live now, for the rest of my life. Each day I fill my survival arsenal with tools that help me cope, find peace, heal and live a life with joy beyond mourning. It's not easy! But I can share what I've learned. Find comfort and peace in the arms of Christ. In the worst experiences of your life, you are given a choice to see how truly good God is. Trust him. Fill your mind with words of positive encouragement, lessons of self reflection and growth opportunities. Through it all be honest. Surviving grief and struggles in mental health is messy. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth I’ve been struggling with my mental health for quite sometime now, of course keeping it extremely quiet and never speaking too much about it. God forbid somebody find out how bad I’ve been struggling and actually want to offer help to me.... pshhhh. I’ve opened up to my closest friends and family about the severity of my negative thoughts and they’ve been nothing but supportive, like I knew they would be. Why was I so afraid to tell them how I feel? It’s perfectly okay to not be okay. It’s okay to not even know why the fuck you feel so sad. I took this photo at a park with my sister a few weeks back. I love everything about it.

Particularly when your own family background is, shall we say, less than idyllic, and you're determined to provide a much better life for the little one you chose to create. I've had an uphill struggle with both my head and my (surprisingly weak) body since about two weeks after conception. I've been depressed, anxious, irritable, nauseous, crippled with pelvic pain, terrified, stressed, and scared of losing my identity. But I'm learning to embrace the good moments when they happen. Then about eight years ago [he was 42 at the time of this interview] I got very dark and there was a ton of isolation. I had to do a lot of things I didn’t want to do. Like I had to admit that I made all the mistakes I assumed I would never make. I changed pretty much everything you can change. The city that I lived in, every person that I spent time with. I got a divorce, but then fell in love in a way that I didn’t know I was capable of, and then felt loved in a way I didn’t know I was capable of. I quit drinking, quit smoking.
