Lise Meitner ~ November 7, 1878 – October 27, 1968 She was an Austrian-Swedish physicist who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. Meitner, Otto Hahn and Otto Robert Frisch led the small group of scientists who first discovered nuclear fission of uranium when it absorbed an extra neutron; the results were published in early 1939. Meitner, Hahn and Frisch understood that the fission process, which splits the atomic nucleus of uranium into two smaller nuclei, must be accompanied by an enormous release of energy. Nuclear fission is the process exploited by nuclear reactors to generate heat and, subsequently, electricity. This process is also one of the basics of nuclear weapons that were developed in the U.S. during World War II and used against Japan in 1945. #LiseMeitner#Women#WomensRights#HumanRights

Physicist and Chemist | 1878 - 1968 | Austrian/Swedish Lise Meitner discovered nuclear fission. She worked at the Chemistry Institute in Berlin but was unpaid and forbidden from using the labs or the toilets because she was a woman. Due to these restrictions, she was forced to do her radiochemistry research in a basement. She worked with Otto Hahn trying to create new elements by firing neutrons at uranium. She was Jewish and had to flee the Nazis in 1938. From Sweden, she wrote letters to Hahn explaining that she had realised that by firing neutrons at uranium, they had been causing the nuclei to stretch apart and release energy. Despite her being the one to discover that nuclear fission was happening, Otto Hahn won the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry without her. The element Meitnerium was named in her honour. #lisemeitner#physics#fission#science#womeninphysics#womenofphysics#womeninstem#nuclear#chemistry#feminism

The first nuclear fission initiated by humans took place in 1938 in Berlin. It was triggered by bombarding uranium salts with neutrons. The experiment opened the doors for the peaceful use of nuclear energy as well as the developement of atomic bombs. The second picture shows the so called "Nuclear-Fission-Table" with original equipment only. Lise Meitner, Otto Hahn and Fritz Straßmann used this appliances to prove the first nuclear fission.

#farmaciasantodomingo#cuidamososdeti#cuidadodelamujer#farmacia#farmaciaorihuela#farmaciadeguardia#guardia#orihuela#redovan#sanbartolome#rafal#bigastro#cox#callosadesegura#albatera#granjaderocamora#benferri#benejuzar#desamparados#elescorratel#lamurada#lacampaneta#caminoviejodecallosa#hurchillo#correntias#mesdelamujer#mujeresespecialesentuvida#lisemeitner

#LiseMeitner 👇🏽 click "more" to read ⠀ ⠀ As a Jewish woman, the Austrian-born physicist Lise Meitner was doubly disadvantaged during her scientific career in Nazi Germany. After fleeing to Sweden in 1938, she received a plea for help from her research collaborator when the experiments they had planned together produced some unexpected results. A couple of days later, she had solved the problem – they had unwittingly initiated the break-up of a uranium atom. By 1945, her theoretical conclusions had been realised practically in the atomic bomb.⠀ ⠀ #WomensHistoryMonth#31DayChallenge#Day12#FamousWomenThatChangedTheWorld

💜Lise Meitner💜 Here"s my series of illustrations for my engraving class. Lise Meitner was an Austrian-Swedish physicist who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. Meitner, Otto Hahn and Otto Robert Frisch led the small group of scientists who first discovered nuclear fission of uranium when it absorbed an extra neutron. Meitner spent most of her scientific career in Berlin, Germany, where she was a physics professor and a department head at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute; she was the first woman to become a full professor of physics in Germany. She lost these positions in the 1930s because of the anti-Jewish Nuremberg Laws of Nazi Germany. Meitner received many awards and honors late in her life, but she and Otto Frisch, did not share in the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for nuclear fission that was awarded exclusively to her long-time collaborator Otto Hahn. In the 1990s, the records of the committee that decided on that prize were opened. Based on this information, several scientists and journalists have called her exclusion "unjust", and Meitner has received many posthumous honors, including naming chemical element 109 meitnerium in 1992. Despite not having been awarded the Nobel Prize, Lise Meitner was invited to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in 1962. #draw#drawing#art#artwork#engraving#ink#womens#womensday#womenshistory#lisemeitner#physics#portrait

In honor of Women's History Month, we will be doing our part in highlighting women in the field of Science. Today's spotlight is on Lise Meitner! When Lise Meitner finished school at age 14, she was barred from higher education, as were all girls in Austria. But, inspired by the discoveries of William Röntgen and Henri Becquerel, she was determined to study radioactivity. When she turned 21, women were finally allowed into Austrian universities. Two years of tutoring preceded her enrollment at the University of Vienna; there she excelled in math and physics and earned her doctorate in 1906. She wrote to Marie Curie, but there was no room for her in the Paris lab and so Meitner made her way to Berlin. There she collaborated with Otto Hahn on the study of radioactive elements, but as an Austrian Jewish woman (all three qualities were strikes against her), she was excluded from the main labs and lectures and allowed to work only in the basement. In 1912, the pair moved to a new university and Meitner had better lab facilities. Though their partnership was split up physically when she was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1938, they continued to collaborate. Meitner continued her work in Sweden and after Hahn discovered that uranium atoms were split when bombarded with neutrons, she calculated the energy released in the reaction and named the phenomenon “nuclear fission.” The discovery—which eventually led to the atomic bomb (“You must not blame scientists for the use to which war technicians have put our discoveries,” Meitner would say in 1945)—won Hahn the Nobel Prize in 1944. Meitner, overlooked by the Nobel committee, refused to return to Germany after the war and continued her atomic research in Stockholm into her 80s. Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.”

Today I sketched a portrait of Lise Meitner, the first female professor for physics in Berlin, Germany. Born in 1878 in Vienna, Austria, she also spent some time in Berlin to do research with some of the best scientists at that time: Max Planck and Otto Hahn. She had to endure many reprisals, because women had little rights and were not even allowed to universities. She experienced World War I as a nurse and her horrible experiences lead to her pacifist conviction. Even more dramatic was, that she was researching with Otto Hahn on nuclear fission and she had to watch, how her achievements were used to build and use an atomic bomb. Being from a jewish family she went into exile to Sweden during the Nazi regime. 1944 she also had to watch how Otto Hahn received the noble prize for chemistry, for his research to which she had largely contributed. He didn’t mention her with a word. Later in life she became a world renown scientist and taught at universities all over the world. Her last years she spent in Camebridge, England. This is my second portrait for the portrait challenge 2019 by @ohn_mar_win and @augustwren. . . . . #portraitchallenge_2019#sketching#portrait#watercolorportrait#lisemeitner#aquarell

Almost done with all 8 of the portraits in this cool challenge! For SCIENTIST I chose Lise Meitner, an Austrian-Swedish physicist who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. Despite converting to Christianity as an adult she was still persecuted for being Jewish and the impact on her career was profound due to the Nuremberg Laws of Nazi Germany. She had been the first woman to be a full time professor of physics in Germany, but this position was lost and she fled to Sweden to continue working and gained citizenship. She received many honors and awards and even after her passing had an element named after her (she was the first “non-mythical woman to have an element named after her) #portraitchallenge_2019#lisemeitner#womeninscience#jewishsciences#sketchbook

"Life need not be easy; what is important is that it not be empty." Wise words from nuclear physicist, Lise Meitner. Wise words indeed. . Lise was one of the first women to earn a doctoral degree in physics from the University of Vienna in 1905. She'd soon go on to discover the Auger effect, an atomic phenomenon that causes emissions from the surface of electrons. And...that's not all, Lise was the first ever PERSON, not just woman, to accurately articulate what happens to atoms during nuclear fission. Boom! 💥 . Want more stories? My first bathroom selfie on International Women’s Day March 8th, 2019! HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY 😘 TO ALL THE POWERFUL WOMEN who are out there to change the world 🌍 And change starts with being a great, strong and powerful women yourself!! . . And to all the POWERFUL MEN out there; be respectful to and grateful for your mothers, your sisters, your partners, your female friends and all the female family members that have played an influential role in your life. . From time to time we (women and men) tend to forget how much these women (especially our mothers) have made us who we are today. It doesn’t matter if they have always been our best or worst role models. With every thing the women who love us do, they always have the best intentions for us even though the outcome may not always show as planned. We have to be thankful for every day of our existence given to us and use this chance to empower women to achieve greater things by constantly creating a more EQUITABLE world.. . . . . . #woman#women#chemistry#nobel#meitnerio#quimca#qumica#LiseMeitner#justicaparamujeres#cientificas#scienes#science#109#physics#fisica#Nuclear#fision#1944

“Science makes people reach selflessly for truth and objectivity; it teaches people to accept reality, with wonder and admiration, not to mention the deep awe and joy that the natural order of things brings to the true scientist.” -- Lise Meitner . Meitner co-discovered nuclear fission, for which her male collaborator won the Nobel prize. Having Jewish heritage, in 1938 she was forced to flee Germany, leaving her position as professor of physics in Berlin. She was deeply saddened by other scientists' passiveness towards the Nazi regime, and the eventual application of her discovery in developing the nuclear bomb. . #lisemeitner#womeninphysics#womeninstem#womeninchemistry#nuclearphysics#physics#physicist#nobelprize#austrianhistory#germanhistory#sciencehistory#worldwarII#nazigermany#womeninscience#feminism#womeninhistory#influentialwomen

Lise Meitner. #art#lisemeitner#nobelprize#lienzo#canvas#acrilicanvast#modernart#losolvidados#theforggotens#pintura#artist#paintsale

You might not have heard of her, but here are three reasons why Lise Meitner was a scientific badass:⠀ ⠀ 1. She was responsible for huge step forward in physics: she discovered nuclear fission. Fission is the physical process by which very large atoms like uranium split into pairs of smaller atoms. It's what makes nuclear power plants possible.⠀ ⠀ 2. She fought for credit for her ideas. She was left out of a paper describing research she pioneered, but the main author couldn't even explain how it worked. Meitner wrote a letter to the editor describing exactly how fission occurs.⠀ ⠀ 3. She persevered. As an early-career scientist, Meitner had two difficulties: she was a Jew living in Nazi Germany, and she was a woman. Rather than giving up on research, she fled to Sweden and took a position in Stockholm. In 1966, decades after her first discovery, the U.S. Department of Energy jointly awarded her and her colleagues its prestigious Enrico Fermi Award “for pioneering research in the naturally occurring radioactivities and extensive experimental studies leading to the discovery of fission.”⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #lisemeitner#womeninstem#histsci#sciencehistory#physics#nuclearfission#nobelprize#fermiaward#meitner#sciencehero#womeninchemistry#womendoingscience

Meitner reconheceu o potencial explosivo desse processo.

A selfie from the archives, taken last year in Lisa Meitner strasse, just round the corner from the @europeanspaceagency operation centre in Darmstadt, Germany, and revisited today for the International day of women and girls in science . Lise Meitner (1878-1968) was one of the scientists behind the discovery of nuclear fission, though of course she was overlooked when the time came to award a Nobel Prize. In the early 20th century, she was the second woman to earn a PhD in physics at the University of Vienna and the first to become a full professor in physics in Germany, though she would later have to abandon her post at the University of Berlin to flee nazi Germany due to her Jewish origin. Fortunately she made it to Sweden, where she could continue her brilliant science career . We have done some steps towards inclusion since, but hardly enough. Just think that, while I was a PhD student in Germany a decade ago, there was just one woman who was full professor in my sub-field of astrophysics. In the whole country. And if it's challenging for white women in Europe (Germany's just an example by the way) I can't even begin to imagine the daily experience of minority fellow scientists from marginalised backgrounds. So we study, we work, and then we work some more – each according to their abilities and needs I might add – to try and make this better for the scientists around us and the ones that will come after . #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience#science#scientist#physicist#physics#womeninstem#womeninscience#lisemeitner#lisemeitnerstrasse#darmstsdt#germany#deutschland#sciencestreets#womeninphysics#womeninastronomy#iamaphysicist#iamascientist#sheisascientist#scientistsofinstagram#diversity#inclusion#diversityisnothingwithoutinclusion#historyofphysics#historyofscience#actuallivingscientist#scientistsofyesterday#scientistsoftomorrow#selfie#scienceselfie#scientistswhoselfie
