"From intricate drawings to epic canvases, Julie Mehretu’s works weave together themes of identity, cultural history, geography, and personal stories, all co-existing in a visual state of delicately-constructed chaos. This 2004 print from her "'Landscape Allegories” series, is inspired, in part, by depictions of nature in the backgrounds of centuries-old engravings. Here, the subtleties of Mehretu’s etched lines carry the narrative, and transport us into her invented world.”— Siri Engberg, Senior Curator, Visual Arts, Walker Art Center⁣ ⁣ This artwork is currently on view in "Five Ways In," and will be shown in the upcoming exhibition "Julie Mehretu," 2021, marking the first-ever comprehensive retrospective on the work of #JulieMehretu.⁣#5WomenArtists#WomensHistoryMonth ⁣ ⁣

Don’t miss drawings and monotypes by #JulieMehretu, which are presented in a solo exhibition at #KettlesYard alongside ‘ARTIST ROOMS Louise Bourgeois’ until Sunday. Inspired by current world issues and drawing from her personal biography and the history of abstraction, Julie’s work interrogates the present with urgency and lyricism. Julie’s work ‘Drawings for Helen’s Room’ is also included in the annual #DrawingRoomBiennial, an exhibition of over 200 unique drawings, culminating in an auction of the shown works which closes 26 March. "That's what I'm interested in: the space in between, the moment of imagining what is possible and yet not knowing what that is." - Julie Mehretu⠀ .⠀ Julie Mehretu (b. 1970) makes large-scale, gestural paintings. She shows us an urban landscape that is dynamic and chaotic; constantly in motion. Mehretu has a fascination with mark-making and a commitment to drawing as an intuitive force.⠀ .⠀ Mehretu was a resident of the CORE Program, Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1997–98). From there, her work continued to gain recognition. In 2015, Mehretu received the US Department of State Medal of Arts from Secretary of State John Kerry.⠀ .⠀ #WomenInTheArts#MFAHCoreProgram#GlassellSchoolofArt@MFAH#JulieMehretu@WhiteCube#ContemporaryArt#5WomenArtists@art21

In the world of contemporary art, Julie Mehretu is widely known internationally for her abstract paintings and prints featuring layered lines and urban landscapes. Mehretu has said of her map art: “The characters in my maps plotted, journeyed, evolved, and built civilizations. I charted, analyzed, and mapped their experience and development: their cities, their suburbs, their conflicts, and their wars.” She was born in Ethiopia to an American mother and Ethiopian father and she moved with her family to Michigan as a child. Her experience with varying cultures enhances the art she makes today. She had received a number of accolades including a 2005 MacArthur "genius grant” and the US Department of State Medal of Arts from Secretary of State John Kerry in 2015. 📸:Marian Goodman Gallery #livmulti

Popped in to @sfmoma to see Julie Mehretu's huge diptych 'HOWL, eon (I, II)' installed in the atrium entrance. I'd watched videos last year of Mehretu painting the huge 27x32ft canvases out of a decommissioned church in Harlem (only place she could fit them, using a scissor lift to move around as she worked) so it's great to them in person! Beautiful abstract works exploring the legacy of colonialism, capitalism, class conflict and technological innovation on the history of the Bay Area. #inspired#juliemehretu#howl#sfmoma#sanfrancisco#bayarea#art#artinstallation#visualart#contemporaryart#drawing#painting#printmaking#artist#illustration#usa#americanart#colonialism#capitalism#abstract#travel

I’m in a book!!! #Repost@landscape_painting_now ・・・ “Landscape Painting Now” releases in April from @artbook@thamesandhudson . See link in bio. ............................................................ From the publisher’s website: Although the fact may be surprising to some, #landscape#painting is positively thriving in the 21st century―indeed, the genre has arguably never felt as vital as it does today. The reasons why, if speculative, surely include our imminent environmental collapse and increasingly digitally mediated existence. Landscape Painting Now is the first book of its kind to take a global view of its subject, featuring more than eighty outstanding #contemporaryartists―both established and emerging―whose ages span seven decades and who hail from twenty-five different countries. Through its thematic organization into six chapters―#Realism and Beyond, Post-Pop #Landscapes, New #Romanticism, Constructed Realities, Abstracted Topographies, and Complicated Vistas―the book affords a generous window into the very best of contemporary landscape painting, from #CecilyBrown ‘s sensual, fleshy landscapes to #PeterDoig ‘s magic realist renderings of Trinidad, #MaureenGallace ‘s serene views of beach cottages and the foaming ocean, #DavidHockney ‘s radiant capturings of seasonal change in the English countryside, #Juliemehretu ‘s dynamically cartographic abstractions, #AlexisRockman ‘s mural-sized, postapocalyptic dioramas, and far beyond. #LandscapePaintingNow features an extensive essay by #BarrySchwabsky, art critic for #TheNation. Schwabsky’s text weaves throughout the book, tracing the history of landscape painting from its origins in Eastern and Western art, through its transformation in the 20th century, to its present flourishing. Shorter texts by art historians Robert R. Shane, Louise Sørensen, and Susan A. Van Scoy introduce each artist, situating the importance of landscape within their practice and addressing key works. Designed by @studioblackwell, with over 400 color reproductions, including many details, this ambitious survey makes a compelling case for the continued relevance of #landscape#painting in our time. #contemporaryart#art

As part of Women’s History Month, we're joining @womeninthearts to champion women artists around the world. The first image depicts a stunning sculpture by South Korean artist Yeesookyung. She is known for creating works which celebrate vulnerability and imperfection, combining discarded shards of porcelain that are then fused together with 24 karat gold leaf. The second image shows ‘Poe Clan’, a manga series created by Hagio Moto in the 1970s, featured on a 2018 cover of ‘flowers’ magazine. Hagio Moto is a pioneer of ‘shōjo’ manga, which is aimed at young women – you can see more of her work in our upcoming #MangaExhibition! Third is a piece by American artist Kara Walker, whose work engages with issues of race and gender, the American Civil War and the legacy of slavery. This print confronts the experience of African slaves in the southern states – the title ‘no world’ is a pun on the phrase ‘New World’. . Fourth is a postcard by British artist Rachel Whiteread. Best known for her sculptures made from industrial materials, she was the first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993. The holes in this postcard transform it into a 2D sculpture – see this work on display in our free exhibition of artists’ postcards. The final image is an ink drawing by Julie Mehretu, who has described her pieces as 'narrative maps without a specific place or location', and ‘like a strange dream’. Only two months before the kick off of the Venice Biennale in May. So what did we learn this week from Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery, who is running the VB gauntlet? * The theme has come second to the artists. “I didn’t want to choose a theme and then find artists to illustrate it. I chose good artists and then looked at what they had in common” * The Arsenale and Giardini will be split into two shows, same artists “but a casual visitor might think they were different” * Only 79 artists, half the number in Okwui Enwezor’s in 2015 * All living (unlike 2017), 50/50 men and women * Artists include Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Teresa Margolles, Zaneli Muholi, Julie Mehretu, Handiwirman Saputra * There will be a lot of painting, “am always interested in how it’s always being declared dead and then has this zombie-like resilience and keeps reinventing itself” * It will look at divided societies, “but simple oppositional critique is not enough” * Art is not journalism, Rugoff says (like Christine Macel in 2017), “it’s an interesting question for art, though, when governments use the tricks of artifice, blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, it has to find new forms” * As for the title (allegedly a Chinese curse “May You Live in Interesting Times”), it’s a bit of British-invented fake news from the early 20th century Roll on May... @labiennale@rugoffralph@hayward.gallery@muholizaneli@lawrenceabuhamdan@theartnewspaper.official@cultureshockit#venicebiennale2019#teresamargolles#juliemehretu#handiwirmansaputra#contemporaryart#veniceitaly

Painting is an art form that’s continually expanding and evolving. The sixties and seventies saw a shift from a #modernist to a #postmodernist visual language that have led to a continued diversity. In ‘Painting Now’ renowned critic Suzanne Hudson provides a snapshot of more than 200 artists from around the world who are defining the aesthetics of our time. — 'Eloquent and erudite … essential reading' #LeisurePainting#modernart#painting#modernpainting#YueMinjun#NeoRauch#JulieMehretu#UrsFischer#ZhangXiaogang
