Video by @TimLaman & @RussLaman | A spectacular misty morning flight over the rain forest of Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, one of the best remaining lowland rainforest sites in all of Borneo, and a refuge of Indonesia’s amazing biodiversity. Filmed back in July after a rainy night created the perfect misty conditions at dawn. I’m excited to be going back to Gunung Palung this week to follow up on my @NatGeo camera trapping project and see if we’ve gotten any unusual critters. Stay tuned in by following @TimLaman and I’ll be sharing some of the lesser-known rain forest animals of Borneo. #GunungPalung,#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#mist,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity.

Photo by @TimLaman. Running camera traps in the rain forest of Borneo, you never know what you’re going to get. On this particular night, my subject was a Malayan Porcupine, one of the many fascinating mammals of Borneo’s lowland rain forest that you are unlikely to see even if you spend months there. The huge defensive spines of this animal are just highly modified hairs, and they look pretty effective to me. Part of my @NatGeo project to document the biodiversity of the incredibly rich lowland forests of #GunungPalungNationalPark, in West Kalimantan Province, #Indonesia.#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity.

Wet and humid triggered so many insects more active and come out from its secret place. Here is Black Emperor Scorpion ( Heterometrus longimanus) the biggest scorpions on the region native to Sumatra island. Photo by @TimLaman | A wild female orangutan in Borneo crosses a fallen tree making a natural bridge over a river. This is a new camera trap shot I just got on my recent visit to Gunung Palung National Park in Indonesian Borneo. I was there checking on my ongoing @NatGeo project to try to document the less well known nocturnal mammals. But in this case, I captured an orangutan female instead, actually carrying a baby on her belly (that is hard to see except its orange fur) who was being chased by bees and came down to the ground. If you look closely, you can see many bees around her. Orangutans like to raid bee hives and eat the honey, but when they get swarmed by the bees, they often drop to the ground to try to make an escape and this female just happened to cross this log over the river where my remote camera was set up. Follow me @TimLaman to see more animals that triggered my camera traps in Borneo’s rainforest. #orangutan,@saveGPorangutans, @YayasanPalung, #GunungPalungNationalPark,#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity.

From @timlaman -- I photographed these orphan orangutans at the International Animal Rescue center in Ketapang, Indonesia. They are being transported by wheelbarrow from their night cages to a forest play area, where they spend the day learning skills to survive in the wild. Orangutans have an uncommonly long childhood. They cling to their mother’s body for the first years of their life and will remain close to her for over ten years. Unfortunately, many baby orangutans are kept illegally as pets; they’re obtained by killing their mothers in the wild. When confiscated, the babies end up at centers like this. Although this may be an incredibly cute picture, the back-story is a sad one. Some of these youngsters will hopefully make it back to life in the wild when they get older, but successful release is challenging. The most important thing for the future of orangutans is protecting them in the wild, along with the rain forest they need to survive. If we give them space, they will thrive because they are resilient and tough. Just look at these guys and how mellow they are. Can you imagine eight human two-year-olds in a wheelbarrow? It would be bedlam! -- This is one of the winning images from my Wildlife Photojournalist Photo Story Award in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. -- #orangutans#Borneo#Indonesia#IndonesiaBiodiversity#indonesia_photography#wonderfulIndonesia#PesonaIndonesia#news#goodnews#GoodNewsFromIndonesia#GNFI

Happy world animal day! regram from @brodengeir - Several thousand orangutans are killed each year but researchers have revealed that 150k orangutans has been killed between 1999-2015, and the biggest reason is habitat loss due to palm oil. Often, fires are started to clear the forest. The orangutans get confused by the smoke and can end up outside the forest, and often when an oil palm worker meets an orangutan, they kill them, bury them alive or sell them in the black market. There are only around 70 000-100 000 orangutans left in the wild. It is so simple. Just stop buying palm oil. If you buy a product with palm oil and know about the industry you are doing a conscious decision that you don't care about the lives of thousands of different species that dies and get extinct. You support the destruction of primal and old secondary rainforest. Species that we don't even know exist get extinct because you want your snickers. Remember, as my friend @ak.adie said...if you want to protect the orangutans, protect their habitat first. It's the only way. Without rainforest, where are all the rescued orangutans supposed to live? #endangered#orangutan#indonesia#indonesiabiodiversity#rescue#animalrescue#forest#saveorangutan#natureisbeautiful#savetheanimals#ig_discover_wildlife #endangeredspecies#sustainableliving#rainforest#habitatprotection#habitatloss#savewildlife#wildlifephotography#naturephotography#protecthabitat#education#jungle#wildlife#animals#orangutanfoundationinternational#orangutanborneo#nationalgeographic#yourshot #natgeowild#tanjungputingnationalpark

Photo by @TimLaman. Who is that peering in at the edge of my camera trap frame? That is an elusive Sunda Clouded Leopard in Borneo. I’ve just been up in Gunung Palung National Park in Borneo, checking on my ongoing @NatGeo camera trapping project, and this is one of the intriguing shots I found on my cameras. Instead of walking through the frame like I was planning, this Clouded Leopard just came in the edge, sat down, and took a rest. He triggered the camera multiple times, but he left again without fully entering the frame….. so goes camera trapping. Time to re-frame, re-set, and keep trying. But it is kind of cool anyway, and very exciting to get a glimpse of this spectacular animal, one of five cat species in this incredibly rich rain forest, one of the best remaining lowland forests in all of Borneo. #cloudedleopard,#GunungPalungNationalPark,#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity.

Photo by @TimLaman. A rain forest stream, Gunung Palung National Park. This park in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, is one of Indonesia’s treasures. With what some say is the best remaining example of true lowland rainforest in all of Borneo, its biodiversity is extraordinary. Along with my partners from BTNGP, @YayasangPalung@OneForest, and @saveGPorangutans, I’m working to document the biodiversity of this park that includes an extraordinary variety of forest types, from mangroves by the sea, through lowland dipterocarp forest like along this river, and up to the montane forest at the mountain summits. Stay tuned to @TimLaman for a lot more from #GunungPalung.#GunungPalungNationalPark,#Indonesia,#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity

Photo by @TimLaman. A Leopard Cat, the smallest of Borneo’s five cat species, triggers my camera trap and takes a self portrait deep in the mountains of Gunung Palung National Park. My ongoing @NatGeo project is an attempt to document the lesser known and rarely seen nocturnal mammals of this park, one of the very best remaining examples of healthy lowland rainforest in Borneo. The images is in black & white because I made it with an infra-red sensitive camera and infra-red flashes (which are invisible to us and other mammals), so as to minimize disturbance to wildlife. #cat#leopardcat,#GunungPalungNationalPark,#Kalimantan,#rainforest,#Borneo,#IndonesiaBiodiversity.

After pollination by small insects, the flowers fall en masse, creating this beautiful phenomenon that only happens for a couple days once every four or five years.
